This post has been going around and I've largely ignored it cause haha it's the recycled joke from the PS3 launch era, but this last addition is such a bad take. This is a list of games that are exclusive to PS5; it is not the totality of games that are available to PS5. Many PS5 games are also on xbox, Switch, or even yes, PC. Which IS A GOOD THING, BTW.

And speaking of which, fuck outta here with that "all gaming should be done on PC" shit unless you can show me a PC build that can run games as well as a PS5 or Xbox Series X for the same price point. For comparable specs, a PC is usually twice as much. Not to mention requires a lot more technical knowledge to put together and install all the shit. Not everyone wants that. Laptops that can do similar is even more expensive, often times being 3-4x as much as a console.

As for if we really needed a PS5 when PS4 still exists? For me personally, sure, I'm still using my PS4. I haven't upgraded cause I don't care about being able to play games in 1440 or 2k or whatever higher resolution than 1080p. But for the people that didn't buy into the last generation like my partner's sister? Or people whose PS4 broke like several of my friends? Or even just the people that do care about better graphics or faster load times? It's there as an alternative to a gaming PC. And again, the fact that they're continuing to support PS4 IS A GOOD THING.

Video game console and case design

Today's hyperfixation is on the PLAYSTATION 5. Because I want one, but I really shouldn't buy one, so I am just looking up everything to do with games consoles and burning my brain out.

I used to be a proper xbox player, until I got my PC, then I never really touched by xbox again. I got a PS4 to play Persona 5 and since then it's been a blu ray player for my Adventure Time boxset, not much else. But the current gen - PS5, Series X - is arguably more powerful than my gaming PC, and I still have a lot of friends stuck on PS5, so I am considering investing in a unit.

Anyway is it me or did they really shit the bed with design in this generation?

Look at these chunky fuckers! They do not fit smoothly under your television at all. There is no detail or decoration breaking up their unnecessarily large faces, which makes them look bland and ugly. They look like they're made of cheap plastic, with the two controllers being the highest quality thing about them. I can attest the xbox controller is unbeatable, but playstation really made their shot this generation. A shame I can never get used to the dualshock joystick positioning.

The Series S and the PS5 Slim are almost NO improvement on the base designs.

For some reason they made the Series S look like a speaker???

The new PS5 slim FINALLY has a line across that massive faceplate, but the half matte half glossed finish is not doing it any favours. I think it would've looked much better if, for example, the matte and gloss plates were different colours. Like black and white! It also has an even MORE out of place disc drive, which I think is part of Sony's agenda to go digital only, and the two tiny "feet" for its horizontal positioning are pathetic! Personally I like this more than the original but not significantly, disappointing since I was really looking forward to it.

I want you to compare these nasties to the previous generation - the PS4 and the XBOX One.

....Now, what's hilarious about this image is the consoles look ALMOST IDENTICAL from this angle. And, I guess, that would be why Sony and Microsoft decided to make such a departure with the space heater PS5 and the fridge Series X.

But they both look very premium and advanced, and they fit very nicely in your living room.

The companies tried to look a bit more distinguished in their followup versions in the previous gen too. The white PS4 Pro looks a lot closer to PS5 with its quirkiness, but without the atrocious shiny plastic. Sony tended to add or remove a layer whenever they altered the PS4, I wonder what they would look like all stacked on top of each other.

It's not just the games console designs that suffer - Look at the game cases! I know that the companies want to incentivise you to go digital, but Xbox Series X cases are just awful.

So if you're confused - You should be!!! Microsoft have two kinds of case for the Series X. One of them is the EXACT SAME CASE as Xbox One, but with Series X printed on the front. The second newer version foregoes the sexy Xbox logo entirely and just has Xbox Series X printed in some default font. Awful awful awful.

Playstation is doing better, but barely.

They are reusing PS4 cases with a different print on them. It doesn't look as horrible as Xbox's, and it at least has a different colour on the logo, but damn, the jump between PS3/360 and PS4/One was really impressive, and now they've stopped bothering because they want everyone to go digital. If your game cases look like shit, why bother with physical?

I want to contrast with physical media kings Nintendo, who did an outstanding job in 2017 with designing the case for the Nintendo Switch.

These bad boys are mine. They're super thin, easy to stack, decent quality, and F U N. The red colour pallette makes them pop out. You can see one from across the store and go, "damn, that's a Nintendo Switch game".

I just want a thousand of them.

I would say a disadvantage, especially compared to the Gamecube games next to them, and even compared to 3ds, is that you can't tell what game you're looking at without going right up to them. These cases are TOO uniform, and really tiny, so i have to triple check I am picking up Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and not Tony Hawk Pro Skater. Meanwhile you can tell exactly what Gamecube games I have by colour pallette alone. Like, you can instantly tell that's Windwaker.

The switch in general is a very fun looking games console, much nicer looking than its predecessor the Wii U, though I'm not sure how I feel about the white of the OLED. But every time I see a Switch Lite in stores, even though I know it's worse than my Switch, I want to buy one. It just looks so FUUUUUN.

And finally a special mention to the 3DS and its games case. The console itself was pretty stylish, if... rudimentary for its release period, but the games cases are high quality and almost make me want to have 3ds games just so I can have the cases.

9. There are already some rumours of the Urbz 2 coming out. Compared to the original Urbz version, what do you think should be improved the most to make it successful?

I think we want to move the Urbz more towards open-ended gameplay, like the Sims 2, a more emerging gameplay. I think that on both the consoles and the PC the player customisation of even your character is still a big win. People love designing their own characters. In terms of where it should go, a lot of it is going to have to do with how much we can squeeze out of the technology. There's a big difference between the current generation, like PlayStation 2, XBox and GameCube, and the next generation, in terms of what we can probably do with the platforms. I think that you will probably see a lot of doors open up when we get the next generation.

Based on the timing of the Will Wright interview ( March 30, 2005), the mention of the then next generation of consoles in the interview, and information from Jake Simpson's Twitter feed I had a thought: what if Urbz 2 is that canceled Sims Next Gen project.

This isn’t Darksiders 4, that was teased back in August. Rather it looks like the definitive version is getting a fresh coat of paint for the current gen of consoles.

How do I get it?

If you have Dying Light 2's Ultimate Edition you will get it at no cost at all. Small print (actually, it was full sized): Techland will stop selling the Ultimate Edition and Ultimate Upgrade by September 30, 2024.

When will it come out? How much will it be?

No release date yet, nor a price.

In the wake of Yuzu ceasing development after settling with Nintendo, there is of course more discourse about the legality of emulation on Twitter and it’s kind of insane to me whenever I see people who are insistently anti-emulation and claim to never emulate. Like do you seriously only play current-gen games? Do you not play Final Fantasy III on NES with an English ROM fan translation? Have you never done an A Link to the Past randomized play through?? Do you go out to buy an original Xbox or 360 just to play Jet Set Radio Future because it’s not backwards compatible with modern Xbox consoles???

I can’t think of a more depressing and boring way to engage with video games.

Seeing a Dreamcast logo in a random shitpost video short on YouTube brought me an Anton Ego-tier flashback of me going to an arcade that was on the same mall dad used to have his office at, playing Sonic Adventure 1 from the Dreamcast, completely sucking at it but enjoying every second.

That must have happened in, what, 2001? Holy shit I’m old…

Arcades down here were basically a bunch of current gen consoles hooked to TVs, where a guy would time you the moment you paid, the minimum being one hour, and besides Sonic 1, I also played a ton of GTA III for the PS2, also sucking at it big time.

I stopped going to them around 2003 when mom got me an OG Xbox, which I used to play the shit out of GTA Vice City, Halo 2, Mercenaries, Burnout 3: Takedown and Crash Bandicoot the Wrath of Cortex, which, alongside meeting a now longtime friend who had a Game Cube, and another longtime friend who had a PS2, basically meant I could play any game I wanted for free.

I wanted to go over some of my favorite games I’ve played in recent years that are available on current gen consoles. I’m not covering anyone upcoming, these are titles you can pick up today. Cheaply at that. Several of which are on sale on Steam right now as of writing this.

Paradise Killer:

PC Switch PS4/PS5 Xbox

I just finished this one and am in the middle of writing my review on it. Painfully stylish with a killer vaporwave soundtrack this game oozes aesthetic. Kaizen Game Works understood the hauntology assignment and took it to the MAX. You are an investigator trying to solve an immortal god-like council’s murder in a dystopian society. You’ve returned to this gorgeous open world parasite paradise from your exile of 3 million days (about 8219 years)! If you’ve played Outer Wilds this is among that same vein. (And I will caution you, while not hard, the game relies on you wanting to just explore. It will provide hints but it won’t hold your hand.)

This is an Ace Attorney-esqe collectathon mixed with open world and exploration. There is no combat. Both the writing and the world are spectacular. Don’t deny yourself something this wonderful, because it is.

This has quickly risen among my gaming ranks as a favorite and it hits to being as close of a favorite as my number 2 suggestion…

Outer Wilds:

This is perhaps one of my favorite games of all time. I wanted to talk about this second because Outer Wilds has received more of the notoriety it deserves in recent times and I wanted PK to get the main spotlight. Don’t get it twisted though If it wasn’t for UpIsNotJump’s video (<— Spoilers) I would have never realized what I was missing. And I still think a lot of people don’t understand what they’re missing too. It is an absolute masterpiece. And seeing it getting released physically again is a god send. I want people to play this game. (And it’s DLC Echoes of The Eye)

No combat. You are a scientist exploring your local solar system in your spaceship in an open “universe” instead of an open world. The sun explodes every 22 minutes which sends your memories back in time. Again, I will caution you that the game relies on you wanting to explore. It will not direct you.

Eastward:

PC Switch Xbox

Too much exploring. Let’s reel it back with Eastward. A Zelda-like where you control an older man and a little girl with psychic powers in a post apocalyptic world. If you’re looking for those fun pixel games that pack that quirky feel this is it. A bit existential, a great sense of humor, and fantastic writing are all part of the Eastward package. (You startin’ to see a theme here? Ha ha)

All while boasting a seriously killer pixel soundtrack. The original Iron Carbine trailer for the Nintendo Direct had an immediate impact on me as a gamer. I knew this was a game I would fall in love with. Sometimes you just know when something is special. This game is beautifully pixelated and packed with lovingly crafted content. Puzzles are the right amount of challenging and there is so much fun side stuff to do. Including a Dragon Quest-esqe game inside the game! It also received DLC via Eastward Octopia! Which I also love.

Moon: A Remix RPG

I do play games with combat. I swear. Several of these games just don’t have it! (Ha!) This will perhaps be the hardest game to sell to you on this list. I have a soft spot for quirky games like this, but know that this was a PS1 Japanese exclusive game in the 90s. And it sure acts like it. Slow to start, weak tutorial, and doesn’t provide a ton of direction. This game was ported into English for the first time in 2020 and I love it. It is a trial and error experience though.

This cult classic is one of the games that inspired Undertale and when you play it becomes wildly apparent. I dare say it reminds me more of Undertale than its other main inspiration Earthbound. You are a little boy that’s been fallen into his video game and you have to save the souls of monsters the hero has killed using love. (Sound familiar?)

Light hearted and weird this game also has a great sense of humor as it pokes at classic RPG tropes. And that slow intro comes into play providing a unique perspective as you journey through the game befriending people. It won’t be for everyone, I would research this one before sinking the… $18.99 on the purchase. But I think it is worth experiencing if you love Undertale.

I think I’ve yakked enough. If folks like the post I’ll follow up with a part two with a little more genre variety! I wanted to the first post to include my top favorites. So. I hope there’s something in there that invigorates you the way these games did for me.
