Iām just browsing some of the common magic items in Xanatharās Guide to Everything, and quite a few of them delight me, for much the same reasons as the trinket tables. Not necessarily because theyāre useful, but because theyāre quite evocative of setting and character. These feel like ā¦ things that would be knocking around your world, and things that certain characters (or NPCs) would be drawn to.
Like. If youāre in a campaign/setting with a lot of intrigue, a combination of the Clothes of Mending (magically mends itself to counteract wear and tear), the Perfume of Bewitching (lasts an hour, gives advantage on all charisma checks, and does not alert people theyāre being influenced by magic), and the Veteranās Cane (transforms into a longsword on command and then becomes nonmagical) all feel like an excellent courtier/spy kit? Your clothes are always pristine, a dab of your perfume or cologne makes people ever so much more amenable to you, and if all else fails you have a weapon to hand even if technically they werenāt allowed on the premises. Create a persona as a somewhat unsteady dowager or a dignified ex-military person, and set about your missions.
I would also be quite fascinated at the thought of an NPC seller who specialises in such items. The perfume in particular. That dingy little shop that all the right gentlemen and women are ā¦ knowledgeable of. Perhaps they have other wares. Poisons, perhaps? In a setting with intrigue, definitely an opportunity to create something of a fixer/broker sort of character, someone who sells useful little items to gentlefolk in need.
The Tankard of Sobriety is also an interesting little character detail. You simply canāt get drunk off whatever you drink out of it. (You can still be poisoned or drink acid out of it, itās not protective in those senses, you just canāt get drunk). Thatās a fascinating little thing for someone to have. And, again, it might just be because the Perfume made me think intrigue, but that would be such a useful information gathering tool. You gently encourage your targets to get drunk around you, and youāre tossing back exactly the same stuff as well, so they donāt suspect, but youāre staying fully compos mentis while they descend. I feel like this would be a really good little item for a crime lord sort of NPC to have? Their little way of keeping control while attending fraught meetings and the like.
On a much less delicate and more rough and tumble sort of level, I also quite enjoy both the Rope of Mending and the Pole of Collapsing. The rope you can cut up however you want and then say a command to knit it all back together, though any missing pieces will be lost. The pole you can collapse down from 10ft to 1ft with a command for easy stowing, and expand back out with another command. Interestingly, itāll only expand as far as the space allows, which gives me distinct Sun Wukong vibes. I wonder if you could use it to arrest your fall down a narrow shaft? Anyway. I like this pair of items because they just feel like the sorts of things a pragmatic explorer would have.
And then thereās interesting little items like the Charlatanās Die and the Candle of the Deep.
The die requires attunement, and itās that quintessential cheaters tool of a loaded dice, in that it lands on whatever number you want it to land. So itās a sophisticated cheaterās die in that you can tailor it to whatever number fits the situation, so it isnāt just perpetually rolling sixes. You can rig every roll as you please, to win, to lose, to be one short of what you need. Itās a great tool for a gambler who likes to play the players as much as play the game, as they can tailor any series of rolls to build drama or lessen tension as they require. It allows a lot more psychological manipulation of what is meant to be a game of chance, so itās a telling sort of item for a good cheater to have.
And the candle is quite practical, being just a candle that burns underwater, but also just so good for when you want spooky Innsmouth underwater rituals to sea hags or dark gods to be happening in your world. An altar set with these in the middle of a flooded temple dungeon, their eerie light flickering under the murky water, is just a wonderful bit of set-dressing to throw in, and a nice bit of a thing for players to salvage. Possibly at some risk, if theyāre taking them off an active altar.
Also, they run down just like normal candles, so Iām delighted again that thereās likely someone out there selling them. A dockside chandler that supplies all your salty ritual needs.
Like, these are all just great little character or setting building details. Interesting things for players to pick up and play with, and potentially informative little things to watch an NPC use or find in their possession.
Low level magic items are potentially a lot of fun. Heh.

looked it up cause i was thinking about how fun it would be to just. not go down, and then stumble over and die as soon as combat ends, and zealot barbarians are op actually.
not just the level 14 rage beyond death feature, but even the level three thing of not costing material components to be resurrected is insane
#anachronistic chats#dnd 5e#xanathar's guide to everything#the level 14 feature also has really interesting potential for an encounter actually#for like#an endurance fight#or something

So patch 8. At the beginning of Bg3 I was just going to look at the developer notes that relate to this pale precious star. (well, still is)
But I did feel the special magic of the world of Faerƻn. And the creation of characters with that lore. So this addition with the new classes is very inspiring. I beforen read about the druid of the stars in DnD5. Because the star druid can see the future by Omen. I think it's funny for not first run. Like a headcanon.
Tashaās Cauldron of Everything
I'd like to get a feel for Waterplane and Warlock Otherworldly Patrons someday. Because I have an idea for Mysterious Mischievous Fish.
But Hexblade, its connection to darkness I think fits the mood of Act 2 more. After all, we barely explore the element of water in BG3. The emphasis on a certain magical artifact and rules has always to me made magic more real and believable.
Also the shadow sorcerer looks very interesting! (rich goth kid)
Imagine you're about to take a bite and drink blood for the first time in your life. And this Tav is a Shadow Sorcerer Quirks

If Jason were a DND character, what do you think he'd be? (class, alignment, backstory, etc.)
Anon, say what?
Your ask and my answer donāt actually involve owlbears, but I just really like them, lol. And the scene above is my favorite part of the DnD movie.
First of all, Jason would definitely be a home brew character in a game where the player is friends with the DM. š Jason is so complex, itās impossible to slot him neatly into all of the DnD rules (he definitely wouldnāt be optimized, lol, but boy would he be fun to play).
Alignment is the easiest - heās definitely chaotic good. He acts as his conscience directs, with little regard for what others expect (PHB 5th Ed). He doesnāt care about laws but he has a strong sense of justice, and heās willing to do whatever is necessary to achieve what he thinks is right.
For his class, heād start out as a Rogue, he relays on skill, stealth, and his foes vulnerabilities to get the upper hand in any situation, he has a knack for finding the solution for just about any problem (PHB 5th Ed). At level three heād take the thief subclass. But, after level 8 (read: his death in Ethiopia) heād multi-class. Hereās where it getās complicated, and I can see it going a bunch of different ways. My partner and I came up with half a dozen options talking through this last night, but these are my two favorite:
Option 1: Heād multi-class as a dex-based Vengeance Paladin. Heās sworn an oath of vengeance to set right that which has gone wrong, his own purity is not as important as delivering justice (PHB 5th Ed). At surface level, this might sound like Bruceās class, but the key here is that a Vengeance Paladin is willing to sacrifice even their own righteousness to meet out justice upon those who do evil.
Option 2: Heād switch his subclass to assassin (home brew, remember), and heād start taking levels as a dex-based Fighter with the Samurai subclass, his resolve is nearly unbreakable, his enemies have two choices: yield or die fighting (Xanatharās Guide to Everything).
In either option, heād dual wield finesse weapons skinned to be his kris and a handgun.
I think heād have a custom backstory, something centered around being a foundling given his history of atypical adoptions, first by Bruce and then Talia.
Answering this was oodles of fun, anon, thanks for the ask!!! š
#keen converses#this almost makes me want to start up a dc-based dnd campaign just so i can play jason in it#now iām thinking about the rest of the batfam too#dick is definitely a monk#jason todd#red hood#batfam#dnd

Dream Walker ā Fey Speaker
Druids who are members of the Circle of Dreams hail from regions that have strong ties to the Feywild and its dreamlike realms. The druidsā guardianship of the natural world makes for a natural alliance between them and good-aligned fey. These druids seek to fill the world with dreamy wonder. Their magic mends wounds and brings joy to downcast hearts, and the realms they protect are gleaming, fruitful places, where dream and reality blur together and where the weary can find rest. I just want to share a spell with y'all that I can't believe people don't make fun of it. That being Skill Empowerment, a 5th-level transmutation spell for artificers, bards, sorcerers, and wizards, found in Xanathar's Guide to Everything.
It gives a creature expertise in a skill it already has proficiency with for its duration, which requires concentration from the caster.
Sure, expertise is nice to have... But sacrificing a 5th-level spell slot for it, with concentration, is such a bad deal! And the class selection is so random. Bard is perfect, but why artificer & sorcerer & wizard? I'd have given that to cleric and maybe ranger, too?
Enhance Ability already exists and it's better in every way. It's available earlier (it's a 2nd-level spell after all), it gives advantage (statistically a +5 to rolls), and it applies to all ability checks using an ability score! Give your rogue Cat's Grace and they'll benefit for both the stealth skill and the sleight of hand skill!
And the best part is that you can even upcast Enhance Ability to give more creatures that same benefit. By using a 5th-level slot, you can target four creatures with it, and not just one.
Enhance Ability is legendarily bad, a useless little segment in a very useful and good 5e book.
