Back from watching “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” and if you enjoy anime you’ll love this movie. Amazing animation. Although, I have to say I felt the story was too similar to the Rohan plot in “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” at several points. Including the dialogue.
Absolutely loved Héra, our female protagonist, and her character arc. My partner said Helm Hammerhand recalled him of Son Doku (Dragon Ball) at one point (if you know, you know).
Tumblr media
As for the Haladriel comparisons between Héra/Galadriel and Wulf/Halbrand… honestly I didn’t see it, at all.
Tumblr media
Wulf and Halbrand are completely different characters. Their story is nothing alike, in my opinion. To me, Wulf is a sexy warrior version of Grima (he remind me of Jon Snow the evil version) because Héra is very similar to Éowyn (yassified version). And the parallels between “The Two Towers” and this movie are very strong.
Probably for the folks out there who ship these two? But make it hotter?

“I would never clip your wings, Héra,” he said with a strange, husky note in his voice.
A commission from @fairyringsandwings for Ummltu83 inspired by their fic ‘The Taming of The Wulf’ (link in the comments) - I had so much fun with this, I cannot thank you enough for commissioning me!

After the whole "was I so easily forgotten?", Wulf purposefully hurts Hèra in an attempt to scar her. By that point, Hèra has spent years of thinking of him and worrying about him, but he doesn't value that because it wasn't in the exact way he wanted.
By the time she faces him again and wears the wedding dress to manipulate his emotions, the scar is gone and I appreciate this writing choice so much. She still cares for him, but his attempt to mark her the way she marked him has failed, just like all his attempts to mold her and shape her to fit his own desires.
I love that Hèra is not forever scarred by him and that she ultimately has the freedom that he would never have allowed her.

As promised here's my comparison post about how similar the Haladriel (Sauron/Galadriel) and Hèra/Wulf ships are from the LOTR projects "The Rings of Power" and "The War of the Rohirrim". 😀 I loved the movie and totally rec it and am a fan of ROP, and now ship both of these ships. I figured they would be alike, but it was even more than I thought. Putting most of this behind a cut for spoilers for both and length but will say again like I did in my review post that Hèra & Wulf both by themselves and their relationship felt like how we've written a lot of 1st Age fics about Galadriel & Sauron back when they were Artanis & Mairon and during The War of Wrath.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To start with the characters themselves, Hèra is very similar to how Galadriel was in the 1st Age and the beginning of ROP as she was a princess named Artanis and the only daughter of one of the Nolder elves.
Also with their costumes she wears mostly green, white, and gold, while he wears dark colors. They also look somewhat like the actors on ROP, especially Wulf with Sauron's Halbrand form.
Like Galadriel, she also has 2 older brothers: Haleth, the heir to the throne and a warrior like their father, and Hama, a musician. Galadriel's oldest brother Finrod was actually similar to both of Hèra's brothers.
Hèra's father Helm Hammerhand is the King of Rohan, similar to how Galadriel's father is one of the elvish kings in Valinor. Helm also notices how his daughter is very head strong and more like her brothers, and grows to respect that. One of Galadriel's older names Nerwen means "man maiden" and she was described as being the same, athletic (both projects have them climbing icy mountains), and excellent with horses.
The people of Rohan are descended from the Númenóreans which this movie seems to suggest they've inherited things from Elros, Elrond's twin brother who were part man, elf, and Maiar. Helm and Haleth seem to have superstrength, Hama is not only a skilled musician but archer, and Hèra's own character, warrior like nature, and personality came across more elvish to me too and she ends up being able to get help from the eagles.
Now with Wulf he's from the wild men that lived on Middle Earth before the Númenóreans came, or the Southlanders as they called them in ROP. He, as well as Haleth and a few other characters have the same accent Halbrand has, or Northern English.
Because of this Wulf and his people are made to feel less than, which is why Wulf's father Freca partly wanted to marry Wulf and Hèra to unite their peoples (but Freca also wanted to take over).
This difference is also pointed out because Helm was going to marry off Hèra to a prince from Gondor, which not only angered Wulf and his father, but Hèra herself as she had no idea of it. Reminded me of how Galadriel's husband Celeborn is a prince from Doraith.
Wulf's also influenced first by his father and then General Targ to seek vengeance, which twists him similar to Sauron when he was Mairon and turning his back on the Valar to follow Morgoth.
Unlike Sauron though Wulf actually tells Hèra that he loves her multiple times. He's been in love with her since they were kids, so it started from a natural and good place but sadly it turns toxic as he gets eviler.
Like the elves too Hèra comes across as being asexual, likely demisexual, which a lot of the elves, Maiar, and Valar seem to fit that. They usually only fall in love once or twice, and some even decide to never marry. I feel Hèra fits into this as I feel she did care for Wulf, especially how he used to be and with her trying to find him when he disappeared. I do feel if what happened between their fathers never happened, which started Wulf's downward spiral and the war, that their childhood friendship would've turned into love. He already loves her, and I feel with time she would've realized she loves him too. Sadly, it just never happened.
At one point Wulf kidnaps Hèra and proposes to her a 2nd time, similar to how we thought a scene with Haladriel was going to happen. She pretends to accept at first (similar to Galadriel in the season 2 finale with Nenya) but then Wulf realizes she's lying and cuts her on the face with his sword. She actually accidentally cut him on the face when they were kids and he claimed it marked him for her, so he left a mark on her too. This also happened with the crown wound in the season 2 finale with Haladriel.
After the cut and fight Hèra jumps out of the building similar to Galadriel jumping off the cliff. Wulf lets her go for now knowing they'll battle again soon.
Sadly, like Galadriel both of her brothers are killed by Wulf and his men. Galadriel's brothers all died during The War of Wrath by Sauron and his forces. Unlike Wulf, Sauron actually apologized for it in season 1.
Then the final fight at the renamed Helm's deep Hèra saves the people of Rohan by going out to face Wulf alone knowing he'll only be focused on her. Galadriel also helped the people of Eregion escape before facing Sauron in the s2 finale.
During this fight (which is pictured above) she wears an old wedding dress which angers Wulf as he mentions it was supposed to be them marrying instead of fighting. Reminded me of how in the show ROP we see Nenya as being the engagement ring Sauron (with Celebrimbor's help) made for Galadriel and she keeps it. Wulf is also wearing her father's crown, like how Sauron had Morgoth's crown in the show.
Then the line she says when Wulf asks her who she's marrying then if it's not him and she replies "Death". LOL Obviously Galadriel still ends up with Celeborn but that line was fantastic as I could see her saying it too to Sauron.
There's a moment in the fight too where it looks like Wulf is going to surrender and become prisoner. You can tell this is the ending Hèra wants as she still cares for him and hopes he can repent and redeem himself. Sadly, he tricks her and it's clear he's gotten rid of his goodness and only death can stop him.
After he dies you can see her sadness at losing him too along with almost all her family. Now for Sauron we know there was a chance he could still be redeemed after everything with him and Galadriel being immortal and that Tolkien was going to write Morgoth coming back in Dagor Dagorwrath. They all were supposed to unite to defeat Morgoth for the final time. So, there's always a hope that Sauron will be redeemed and that there's still a chance there for him and Galadriel, unlike here where both characters will die human deaths with unknown afterlife fates.
The ending too had a slight similarity as Gandalf contacts Hèra, now a shieldmaiden in her cousin's kingdom, to help assist him as she saw two orcs looking for rings for Sauron. So, it was a nice connection there and I love that Hèra is involved in the War of the Ring somewhat, which leaves it open a bit that she could be included in future projects for either anime or the live-action movies, and what we're seeing the show play out too.

I think Wulf did EVERYTHING he did so Hèra wouldn't forget him or that she'd be forced to keep meeting up with him
I think he really wanted to die by her hand. His hits on her SUCKED. He could have killed her several times.
In a weird way I felt bad for him he became so mentally unwell from her rejection
RIP everyone I guess. Hàma's death fucked me up. :( I loved this movie but why
I hope Hèra prospers in peace now she deserves it. Hail King Fréaláf I don't know HOW you became King but you fine and a good man so it's all good

To the War of the Rohirrim fandom:
Can I get fic recommendations in which Hèra is not being shipped with Wulf or Olwyn plus Háma is not being shipped with Targg? Just Gen fic recommendations.
(I already read the one by GoldenBaron, it was great!)

The war of the Rohirrim
**I will write some of the detsils from the movie, if you dont want spoiler dont read the post**
I finally had time to watch the new animated movie.
Also my book is arrived
In all the movie was given nostalgia, with the music and woth the Eowyn telling the intro.
In all i was have high hope, because of this movie is a new etap in a really big name movie series.
The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogy are still my all time favorite. I think you can understand why.
I was skeptical with the animation, and i have mix feelings after all. When we have a fic scene where is no fight or so mich movement the scenery is amazing and the charater design is amazing also.
But when they wanna articulate or move their body in certain way the scenes are too stiff and looking like they forget to render the 3D models.
The story is also a different situation, we got a really cool new character who was not have a direct name also story in the lore but now she is not a side character, she lead position.
I like Héra' s character, she is strong and warm hearted and not depending on others, sometimes during the movie the editors are forget that she is fully capable to defend herself, but this is not the biggest deal.
Her connection with her brothers was soo good to see.
The king during the film was too egoistic that was not only concern about him, so much unlogical movement that you dont expect from a person who had been have tons of war behind his back.
I really liked in the movie that the romantic lines was enough and not too much. The resembalnce between eowyn and héra is nicely build and shows the cultural aspect of the rohirrim.
It was good to see a balanced female lead character.
About the lead male characters , Wulf was interesting, i liked that they was brave enough to ler him to be crazy and vulnerable, also showing the anger was really good choice for his character. The way they changed his face and outfits and colours during the movie was really nice.
You can see with his palette of colours how he freaks out. I liked this detail.
My absolute fav character is Frèalaf.
He is so genuine and shows stability and diplomacy. As how the king suppose to behave.
He was always was loyal and respectfull with Hèra and her family, even if the king was not deserve it.
The visuals was very nice during the movie, the backgrounds also.
I liked that they used the old soundtrack, but it would be better if they create their own in a similar style. Its a little bit weird for me from this brand. They so much iconic music and soundtrack, the fans i think all wanted to listen it .
About the book
Unfortunatelly i cant recommend to buy the book, because the people as i also, was think that it will be a kind of artbook, but its more a picture book about the movie in short.
I read that they will come out with a bigger real artbook, i recommend to wait for it.
The problem with the book, that dont gives any extra , you just really will see printscreens from the movie.
I recommend to wach the movie the feel nostalgy and have some new also in our beloved fantasy world.

Her name isn't Hera, it's Hèra, which draws its roots from Old English. It's just that people with American keyboards aren't going to pick out the diacritics every single time
My assumption that it was Hera, the Greek goddess of marriage (among other things I know, marriage is just the one I can remember off the top of my head), was from hearing Wulf say it in the trailer, not from seeing people write it. Someone else explained that it was Héra and that does make more sense, though naming her "servant" is... I still feel like a different name should've been chosen.

Wulf: you don't want to marry me?
Hèra: yes
Wulf, accusingly: so you'd prefer to marry someone else?? A stranger?!
Hèra: no, I'd prefer not to marry any man, at all
Wulf: if you marry you must marry —
Hèra: Death.
The irony of Wulf harping on about how Héra would rather marry a stranger is that despite Helm receiving the offer from Gondor, there is no sign he did anything about it.
It's implied months to years went by after Wulf was banishd, and there was no courtship with this stranger. Aside from the throwaway comment Helm makes about wanting Héra to marry and leave Rohan because she would be safe (which considering he only says that when they were under attack, I think is understandable), Helm shows no sign of wanting to force Héra to marry. It's just Wulf who keeps bringing up this stranger.

I don't believe that, in Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim, Wulf was in love with Hèra in the simple, loving sense. He mostly seems to me obsessed with what she represents.
He doesn't see just someone who is strong, stubborn, resourseful and a free spirit. He sees a loved princess of Rohan and, while he and his people were marginalized, this symbol of the very people by whom he is not accepted happens to show affection towards him.
So throughout the years he is away he nurtures those feelings and they get twisted more and more. The Dunlendings and he will not be accepted and loved by Rohan and therefore Rohan and every person that has made Wulf feel inferior in some way must be destroyed. Even after he has avenged himself on Helm and on her brothers, he wants to entomb Hèra. The seeds for that have been planted before he even asks Hèra to marry him. Her rejection and his father's murder seem to be the last straw.
Also, I feel that Wulf's insecurities and resentments were very present even when they were children. It's why he starts attacking so viciously when he feels lesser because Hèra has the upper hand, which is when she does not control her movement as she is trying to keep him off and ends up scaring him. He still protects her by Freca though and seems scared at the prospect of his arrival.
Overall, I feel that he was interesting enough. But I DO wish that the writers had done a better job at showing how things were for him as he was growing up among the Dunlendings and next to Freca. It would have given depth to the character. I also have to give an honorary mention to General Targg. I feel that the presense of someone honorable who cares for the people and was not just acting for selfish reasons gave a bit of nevessary nuance to the Dunlendings and indirectly attributed some validity to their motivations and to their war-effort.

Just saw the new LOTR movie "The War of the Rohirrim" and it was great!!! 😀 I loved the characters, especially Hèra and her family and even Wulf and a few supporting characters, the story, and getting to hear Éowyn narrate it. Really cool to see it as an anime too. I totally get now why a few critics and fans said it feels like a blend of the original trilogy movies and "Rings of Power", as it does feel like it fits with both versions so I totally rec it for fans of both. Hèra reminded me at times too of Galadriel in the 1st Age as Artanis, and of course I'm a Haladriel shipper (Galadriel and Sauron) and I totally saw similarities between her and Wulf's relationship, and Wulf to Sauron. I'm going to do a whole separate post soon with spoilers about how similar the ships are (more so in the 1st Age as Artanis/Mairon but also in the show), and yes I do still ship them despite how tragic it all became. Also, loved too that Wulf, Haleth, and a few others had the same accent Halbrand does and so many attractive characters too!!! LOL🥰
Overall it was great and it's for sure a movie I can rewatch and add to all the Tolkien stuff I have when it's out on DVD. 🐎

Eight mins of footage from the new LOTR anime movie "The War of the Rohirrim" have been released!!! 😀 Unlike what some articles have said this isn't the first 8 mins of the movie, but an extended scenes from later that includes Hèra, Helm, Wulf, and other characters from the movie including 2 orcs that are likely voiced by Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd and a snow troll. You can hear Miranda Otto narrating as Éowyn. Even more excited for this and hoping to see it opening weekend.

Also about that latest interview I thought he was going to ask more about "The War of the Rohirrim" as again I'm seeing from critics and those that have seen the movie already, as it's out in some countries, that Hèra and Wulf's characters and relationship is similar to Galadriel and Sauron's in the show, especially his Halbrand persona. I've even seen some saying that Wulf is like the theory back in s1 that if Halbrand was a normal human but became one of the 9 and turned evil. Morfydd did say she's excited to see it, as am I though probably won't be able to till maybe the 15th if it doesn't sell out. So I'm avoiding most spoilers (besides what's in the appendices) but still curious to see how it is and the similarities.
