What's unnerving about Wulf is that I don't think his father's death played as big a role in his actions as you would think.
He seems more focused on Héra and her rejection.
In LOTR universe, marriages are usually based on love. Yet when they initially talk after the proposal, Héra makes it clear she does not want to marry. And Wulf keeps pressing for her to do so.
He later kidnaps her and intentionally slashes a cut on her face as if to mark her.
When he offers and she says "If I marry you," he has a fit of rage over the word "if." He calls her arrogant...for her...considering not marrying him? Not falling into his arms?
When besieging the keep, even after Helm dies, he keeps going because he wants to make it Héra's tomb.
When she rides out in the bridal gown, he is furious that she would think he still wants her (as he mistakenly believes before she corrects him), but he still wants to fight her himself. He tells the soldiers to go on and that he'll deal with Héra himself.
Even at the end, when she tries to show him mercy by not killing him, he blames her for his fate and tries to kill her.
I'm not saying Wulf's father's death and the banishment helped, but I'm pretty sure Wulf is an incel on steroids. He wanted Héra, but when she rejected him, he decided he'd kill her and everyone else. Kind of, "If I can't have you, no one will."

So I'm a little too obsessed now and ordered this and the art book (which comes out in February) and it's got some very interesting information about ages and relationships that'll be very useful going forward so I'll drop the ages below and anything else interesting I found
Helm: 55 years old, king for 5 years at this point in time, spent almost his entire life fighting the hill tribes and Dunlendings. This is what makes him a king who dislikes to be challenged ok his authority and decisions
Héra: 19 years old, deep love for nature and especially the more fantastical kind, her horse is Ashere. The rest, I'm sure you remember from the movie itself
Lief: 16 years old, main roles are protecting the old maps and scrolls that keep the laws and customs recorded
Haleth: 30 years old, first in line to the throne, not expected to rule for another 20 years based on Helm's own life. A brawler by nature, he's very intimidating to those who threaten his family and he's known as one of their best warriors skilled in sword, spear and axe
Háma: 22 years old, more of a gentler spirit than his father and brother, more passionate about the songs and legends. He likes to think of himself as a warrior poet and is always carrying his carved lyre. A skilled swordsman but an expert with bow and arrow
Fréaláf: 28 years old, lord of harrowdale and first marshal of the Riddermark, the highest military rank and is charged with protecting Edoras and the surrounding lands. His horse is named éored. He was raised alongside his cousins and so has a deep bond with them all but is not above teasing them frequently. He's also very ready to stand up to Helm if he believes a decision unwise
Olwyn: 45 years old, lady's maid to Héra but more become a mentor than a simple maid or servant. Thought in many battles over the years and has known great loss but finds ways to move forward and doesn't suffer fools. She sees herself in Héra as only she and a few others know Olwyn's past as a shield maiden
Freca: 40 years old, lord of the west-march. He claims to be descended from the fifth king of Rohan, Fréawine but his hair and beard instead cast doubt and suggest the Dunlendish blood runs through his veins instead. Has very little love for the kings of Rohan. Spends a lot of time dwelling on what he doesn't have and pays little heed to the king refusing summons to attend the witan
Wulf: 20 years old. Only son of Freca. His mother has also passed like with Héra. Quiet and intense most of the time, dressing in sombre colours. His belief that Héra loves him is very fragile. Expert in swords and bows. Has very little personal ambition at the start, growing up under his father's shadow and subject to his father's whims, despite this he loves his father and should anything happen he'll repay it tenfold. Should his youthful affection be spurned, that love will turn into a pathologically hatred for Helm, Héra and all the people of Rohan
General Targg: born and raised in Dunland, he has become a trusted advisor to Freca and will likely be key to Wulf's own reign. He is wise and calm but in the heat of battle will fight fiercely yet he retains a deep sense of honour as a warrior

Why you should watch War of The Rohirrim - SPOILERS!
Fellow reylo, haladriel, nashuri, darklina, etl and villain x heroine shippers, everyone is sleeping on the new etl ship that dropped 😭
If you're looking for a new ship to add to you armada, here's why you should watch Lord of the Rings: War of The Rohirrim! Spoilers ahead!
Childhood friends turned enemies
They are proper enemies, not rivals. 100% enemies! They fight. They go to war with one another! Her Father kills his and in turn he slays her brothers and ensures her fathers death. He tries to make the fortress she and her people are hiding in 'her tomb'.
"I can't show weakness. Not to her."
He proposes to her TWICE!
"Would it be so bad? [Marrying him] We were inseparable once."
"From the moment I first saw you, I knew you would be my doom."
They each have a scar that the other gave to them! Héra scars his face accidentally as a child. Wulf scars her ae on purpose as an adult, right after the line 'was I so easily forgotten' because HE DIDN'T WANT HER TO EVER FORGET HIM! Just as he's tormented by her memory every time he sees the scar on his face, she'll suffer the same.
"Did I disgust you so much? Was I so easily forgotten?" - Wulf
"I never forgot you. I tried to find you." - Héra
For their final battle, Héra wears a wedding dress to psychological mess with him. He wanted a bride, so she gave him a bride who comes promising death. When Wulf's General tells him 'that is bait, that is literally Wulf with neon flashing signs. Do not take the bait!!' Wulf takes the bait. Héra knows how to goad him.
The villain is in love and definitely obsessed with the heroine
Definitely a darker etl ship. Wulf ain't no Mr Darcy, that's for sure
Héra admits to caring for him and struggles to kill him.
Despite this care, she dosen't want to marry him (or anyone) as she firmly believes they should have a choice in such matters + the movie points out the draw backs of marriage for her (need to leave her home and her family, children taught traditions not her own) + she craves freedom and ends up becoming a sheildmaiden.
She does agree to marry him the second time to save her people, but after she said 'if I marry you', Wulf takes offence. He really wanted her to want to marry him.
As children they bonded over not having a mother in their lives. Found that out in an interview.
Sadly, this does end in tragedy as Héra is forced to kill Wulf. HOWEVER! That is why we have fanfic!! That being said I do have a theory that Wulf wanted Héra to kill him and pretty much reenacted their childhood fight from the day she scarred him, forcing her to kill by giving her no other choice.
In conclusion... please watch this. It's really good. The movie was awesome. And I do think you'll enjoy the wuléra (Wulf x Héra) dynamic.

Ok, I am sick of seeing weird smut dominating the War of the Rohirrim fandom on AO3. Here's a more wholesome story, about war and stuff.

I'm just going to leave this little WOTR dialogue idea here...
Hera - ' I offered you redemption a thousand times over, and you still rejected it . . . '
Wulf - ' I did not deserve it . . . '

The thing I can’t get over with Wulf is… he didn’t actually seem that enthused about marrying Héra? Maybe I just can’t read faces but he really didn’t seem all that into it. More like it was his father’s wish and they had been friends once so they had a fairly amicable relationship and, for the sake of political alliance and the mutual benefit of their people, they would have gotten along okay.
Then Freca died and in one night, Wulf lost his family, his status, and any place he could call home. In much the same way that to Éowyn Aragorn represented freedom and honor and chivalry, Héra represented everything Wulf lost—family, status, home. These became irreparably intertwined with his version of Hera, and he convinced himself he would only be happy once he had destroyed everything she had that he wanted.

and we're never quite safe from the things we adore (5017 words) by yoursincalendricalheresy Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim (2024) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Major Character Death Relationships: General Targg (War of the Rohirrim) & Wulf (Tolkien), Háma | Child of Helm Hammerhand (Tolkien) & Héra (War of the Rohirrim), Fréaláf Hildeson & Héra (War of the Rohirrim), Héra (War of the Rohirrim) & General Targg (War of the Rohirrim) Characters: General Targg (War of the Rohirrim), Héra (War of the Rohirrim), Wulf (Tolkien), Fréaláf Hildeson, Háma | Child of Helm Hammerhand (Tolkien) Additional Tags: Major character death applies to all characters that die in the movie, some of them just happen slightly differently, Canon Compliant, mostly - Freeform Series: Part 2 of WOTR Canon Compliant(ish) Summary:
The siege tower grows slowly, hemorrhaging coin and lumber and men as it ascends. There are only starving refugees to conquer. Only a princess to claim. Targg cannot keep the soldiers from leaving anymore. No longer do the lords of the hill tribes listen when Wulf speaks. No longer do their generals see fit to follow his command. Some leave, unwilling to risk the lives of so many for so little gain. What use is gold to the dead? One offers when Targg confronts him. Your king is right, you cannot eat it, you cannot burn it. In winter you can only die for it. Targg supposes that he is not wrong. -- As winter sets in Targg watches Wulf change and wonders what has become of the boy he helped to raise.
Two days, one job interview and about six hours of sleep later this is finally done. I'm not entirely sure what happened but I like how it turned out!

The irony of Wulf harping on about how Héra would rather marry a stranger is that despite Helm receiving the offer from Gondor, there is no sign he did anything about it.
It's implied months to years went by after Wulf was banishd, and there was no courtship with this stranger. Aside from the throwaway comment Helm makes about wanting Héra to marry and leave Rohan because she would be safe (which considering he only says that when they were under attack, I think is understandable), Helm shows no sign of wanting to force Héra to marry. It's just Wulf who keeps bringing up this stranger.

Also, like all of the things leading up to this was his fault:
Wulf: How dare you make me kidnap you, attack your country, beseige your people, and kill your entire immediate family!?! This is all your fault!
what was wulf on about when he said “I knew you’d be the end of me when we first met” or whatever. you met as children. you were like six. what do you mean you knew she would be your downfall. why were you thinking that. you were in middle earth kindergarten
