Overall review:

I hate boss-employee tropes in romance stories. They give me hives. But, despite giving me hives, Be Loved in House: I Do is a surprisingly good time, if you can get past Jin Yu Zhen being The Way He Is for the first few episodes.

I like that the series is set in a metalworking shop. That's new, and i think it's cool that the characters' jobs actually play a role in the story, and we get to see what they all specialize in. The part where Shi Lei, Bai Xiao Qian, and Wang Jing are all trying to secure a contract before Jin Yu Zhen does shows their workplace camaraderie despite/because of the new boss being kind of a dick, and i like that the random influencers at Yan Zhao Gang's café try to help them. It's nice that all the characters are fundamentally kind people trying to do the right thing (eventually; Jin Yu Zhen does start out basically evil), and all of them get to be with people they love in the end. I like Wu Si Qi and Yan Zhao Gang's B-plot relationship, mostly. It's at least something to watch while our lead couple is still struggling. And i really, really like Shi Lei's character. I don't even know exactly what it is about the way he's written that makes him so compelling, but he's doing great—and this actor consistently nails the tone and mannerisms i want to see out of him.

I think i like the references to Le Petit Prince? Something about how love tames and softens and makes us vulnerable to pain; something about Jin Yu Zhen choosing between the fox here at his side and the memory of the faraway rose that first tamed him. This frames the ending of the series as a kind of reversal of the ending of the book it references, suggesting that the act of cutting himself off from love was akin to Jin Yu Zhen committing a spiritual suicide, whose effects can only be reversed when he lets go of past hurt? Maybe i'm doing too much exegesis here; i don't recall a ton of thematic emphasis on this point, but i could be wrong!

I don't know how popular this opinion is, but i like Yi Zi Tong, and i really like the special episode that explores his backstory with Jin Yu Zhen. They were cute together, and the special episode had a surprisingly mature tonal shift for a storyline that improbably includes Jin Yu Zhen going into a six-month coma. And it even helps sharpen a nice thematic message: Sometimes things don't work out the way you expect, but life goes on after your coma, and you may even be able to heal. I like that Yi Zi Tong decides it's his fault that Jin Yu Zhen refuses to get over their breakup, and he therefore chooses the most dramatic and convoluted way to get him to move forward. I love a messy queen. The false love triangle is initially irritating, but the fact that it's false (and that he plays both sides) helps. And it does get Jin Yu Zhen to finally stop being so annoying, so maybe Yi Zi Tong really did know exactly what buttons to push.

Jin Yu Zhen and Shi Lei have very funny chemistry, and i love the reverse only-one-bed trope where both parties sleep together on the ground instead of the available bed. I've actually used it before in my own writing, so i'm biased, but i think it's a great way to subvert a trope to comedic effect. (And these two look good together! They're clearly having a good time.)

I had a good time, but:

I really loathe the boss-employee trope it's based on, and although there's not much that can be done about that problem, they could have at least made Jen Yu Zhen's workplace rule consistent. There's no reason for him to be mad at Wu Si Qi for dating someone outside of the workplace. It doesn't even begin to make sense. Also, his kicking Si Qi out of the house in the first place is…evil, even if it ends well.

In general i was slightly annoyed at how Si Qi was mostly written as a dumb child for laughs, but then occasionally the narrative asks us to believe he's responsible, smart, and mature. Maybe tone down the gags about how clueless he is about everything just 20% or so.

Not Si Qi and Zhao Gang talking marriage after like two weeks. Tap the brakes, girls.

All the characters act like it's common knowledge that Shi Lei has a crush on Cheng Luo at the café, but he looks at her like twice and says maybe three sentences at her over the course of twelve episodes. That could have been fully dropped, and with all the time it saved, she could have been given a personality. Not everything has to be a poorly executed ghost of a love triangle.

The straight couple had very little flavor. They're not bad, but there's time enough for a little pizzazz. I think their actors could have shined in these roles with a little extra character boost. Instead, they mostly repeat the same joke of Bai Xiao Qian being mad at Wang Jing and Wang Jing cowering from her gaze. As individuals though, they're cool.

Character(s) entitled to financial compensation: The proletariat. Isn't work oppressive enough without anti-love policies?

Conclusion: This series does a bunch of things that i don't love with just enough heart and verve to make me root for the lead couple anyway. I surprisingly think the plotline with the ex works, and the special episode makes the whole preceding plot feel a bit more mature than it actually is. It's funny, it's competently produced, and while the story doesn't always make sense, it at least has the decency to be cute. Would watch again.

Kidnapping

"You left a note in my office." Yu Zhen's voice was soft but his deadly serious tone was unmistakable.

"Yes, I did," Gang agreed without hesitation. "And i meant it. You're not getting him back if you can't prove you're going to take of him."

"You cannot simply take him." Yu Zhen's hand was a fist on his desk. "He's not a belonging."

"He was crying to Si Qi for the third day in a row. I'm done, Yu Zhen. I'm tired of watching you leave him dangling. Either come tell him how you feel or we're taking him in."

"You can't... wait." Yu Zhen straightened up. "What did you say?"

"Either you come tell him how you feel or Si Qi and I are adding him to our relationship." Gang repeated.

"You can't possibly mean that."

"You don't think so? I'm very adventurous and Si Qi just wants to see Shi Lei really smile again. We're very willing to do whatever it takes."

"You wouldn't dare."

"He's already here, sitting on our couch with Si Qi, and more relaxed than I've seen him in weeks. I wouldn't hesitate, Yu Zhen. I don't know how you have."

"Senior classmate..." Yu Zhen's hard tones trailed off.

"You better hurry and make a choice," Gang replied, voice low and hard. "Because I'm not watching Shi Lei drain of energy, joy and love any longer because you're afraid that the man who loves you enough to live and work with you is going to just up and leave."

"That's not what this is," Yu Zhen tried to protest but his voice cracked as he clutched his phone. "Gang, please."

"No. Si Qi and I are both done watching the light go out of his eyes. Nothing like this can last forever. You have an hour to make up your mind, Yu Zhen. And then we're getting started."

The click of the phone call ending felt like it echoed in Yu Zhen's head, staring down at the black screen.

"Did you really just threaten to seduce me?" Shi Lei blinked up at Gang from where he was flopped on the couch. Si Qi was partially wrapped around him and the TV behind them was playing a game show no one was watching.

"I did and I will," Gang huffed as he set his phone down. "I can't believe Yu Zhen still hasn't said a word to you."

"He's just not good with his words," Shi Lei protested, "He did drag me to the picnic."

"Without saying a word. And without managing to stand up for you either." Gang shook his head. "No. This is for the best. Tough love for the sake of love."

"But seducing me?"

"You're not okay anymore, Shi Lei!" Si Qi pouted against his shoulder, squeezing him tightly around the chest. "It's been so many months and he's still just leaving you dangle."

Shi Lei sighed, leaning back against his friend.

"Yes, but seducing me?"

"It was the only viable threat against him," Gang replied as he sat down on the other side of Shi Lei on the couch and handed him a glass of water. "Anything else he'd find a way to wiggle out of. But this? Yu Zhen's too possessive to ignore this."

Shi Lei laughed, softly, and Si Qi lit up at the sound.

"See? You already feel better and he hasn't even showed up yet!" He grinned at his senior and bumped his shoulder.

"Now, we wait." Gang didn't lift his head, even as he heard running footsteps outside. "Not for long."

BLIH and parallel romances (as well as a lot of just relationship analysis, honestly.)

I love both couples in BLIH but the best part is that they're running on parallel tracks beside each other... one healthy and the other kept apart by their own issues.

Cohabitation

Both romances share this trait. Si Qi is invited into Gang's home when Yu Zhen leaves him homeless and Shi Lei ends up remaining as Yu Zhen's roommate when his friends insist that he keep a closer eye on him.

So we've already started with similar but starkly different relationships. Gang rescued Si Qi from homelessness. Yu Zhen forced a friend out and took over the entire home from Shi Lei.

Friends to lovers and enemies to lovers: the stark reality, y'all.

And this keeps feeding into both their relationships. Si Qi knows that Gang wants him there whereas Yu Zhen has made it clear that he does not want Shi Lei there.

Si Qi, Shi Lei, and Yu Zhen all work in the same place. So how is this also about Si Qi and Gang? They joke about him being the little shop manager but he really doesn't do anything at the cafe besides pop in and get spoiled by his boyfriend. Any work he does is secondary to that.

But there's still enough of a parallel to start with and that parallel continues.

Because of the singles' rule. And because of Si Qi's bravery.

Shi Lei and Yu Zhen have been circling each other at home and at work. Neither fully brave enough to speak up or to act on their emotions, especially Yu Zhen. Shi Lei is at least brave enough to use the word relationship. Yu Zhen won't use anything.

Si Qi is willing to sacrifice his own career for the sake of his relationship with Gang. He's perfectly willing to resign, leaving behind the job he's worked so hard for and to lose his chance to work with his friends for the sake of love.

Yu Zhen isn't even willing to give up his singles' rule for the sake of Shi Lei, not yet. He's not willing to use his words yet. His bravery left him some time ago and he hasn't found it again (No, I don't believe that moment at the end of episode 10 will lead to anything, thanks).

Communication

This is the huge one. I mean, this is exactly the plot of the entire show. But it's also a fascinating look into what makes a relationship tick and why one pair is the softest side couple and the other pair has people ready to smack their heads together in the hope something happens.

Si Qi and Gang talk. Sometimes reluctantly. Sometimes shyly. Sometimes it takes time and it takes trust and sometimes they have to be patient and listen. But they always do, in the end. Gang listens to Si Qi and believes his words. Gang trusts Si Qi enough to speak of his own insecurities and his own past. They both listen well enough to be sure that they're on the same page, that they understand their relationship.

Yu Zhen and Shi Lei both communicate mainly through non-word actions. Yu Zhen touches, holds, clings, does his best to attach himself to Shi Lei in every way. Shi Lei communicates by taking care of Yu Zhen. He scratches his back, checks on him, makes sure he eats safe food, brings him lunch and always watches over him to know he's okay.

The problem is that, while those communication styles can work, they don't work if there isn't an agreement and understanding already in place. Without words, none of their actions are enough to reassure either of them.

Actually, that's a lie. I think it's actually enough for Yu Zhen. But it's not enough for Shi Lei. Yu Zhen would be perfectly content and happy if they stayed exactly as they are, or at least he thinks he would be.

This also goes to the moment when Shi Lei mentioned needing space. When Gang tried to not talk to Si Qi, Si Qi stayed patient but firm and gave him the chance to speak, listening and responding with love. But when Shi Lei asked for space, Yu Zhen instantly turned to manipulation, faking an allergic reaction to get his attention. His inability to use words left him no other choice.

Growth

Both Si Qi and Gang came into the relationship from very different points in life. Si Qi with no experience and Gang with enough. Si Qi looking for something steady and longterm and Gang not really thinking in those terms yet. But through the relationship they've both grown into their love and each other's lives and their future together.

Yu Zhen comes from a great deal of hurt and Shi Lei comes from a long history of rejection. And neither of them has really moved past that in anyway. Yu Zhen is aching inside and terrified of putting words to anything, to having something he can lose. Shi Lei is still stinging from rejection after rejection and he doesn't want that to happen again.

Whenever they are faced with an obstacle, they both withdraw into themselves, into their own fear and pain and into the easiest solution: avoidance.

Are there more? Probably. Are these the ones I've come up with and think are the most important? Yes.

Regarding Be Loved In House: I Do, have you thoughts on the romantic evolution of Yan Zhao Gang and Wu Si Qi? Also, I just wanted to comment that I really enjoy the end song of this show!

Gang and Si Qi are just the softest boys and their growth has been beautiful.

Because so much of that growth has been off the screen and only shown to us in small snippets of them being soft and beautiful.

But... the really interesting part is that they truly are a very equal relationship in terms of romance. Gang is older and more likely to initiate but for all his shyness and his flustered nature Si Qi has never shied away or hesitated.

And then to see him instantly push away the even remotest thought of him leaving Gang? The fact that Si Qi was willing to sacrifice his own job and career for love? It was beautiful.

Honestly, they're just such a healthy couple that it's hard to expound on their development because it's just exactly what you want in two men falling in love.

Finding out that Si Qi had a crush on him for months? Beautiful. Gang spoiling him at the coffee shop? Fantastic. Choosing not to hide their love? Love them.

But the most beautiful part truly was Si Qi standing in front of Yu Zhen, so sure of his love that he was prepared to resign and watching Yu Zhen realize that he couldn't yet bring himself to do that, even for his love.

Also, man, I love every song in this drama so far. I want them all on my computer but can't find most of them because ahahahahaha I am not good at this.
