Danmei and Baihe C Novels and Manhua Officially Licensed in English
Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies. I've hit the link limit on this post so I've had to remove NovelUpdate links, but they're still in the version of this post on Wordpress. Note that Taiwanese titles are not included on this list.
This is everything I know of as of December 11, 2024. There might be more. I tried. Resources used to compile this list: Danmeinews.com; this Carrd, last updated in March 2023; this other carrd last updated October 23 2024; list of danmei with official licenses on NovelUpdates; a similar list on Goodreads; danmei-specific list on Reddit that to my eye looks accurate for the larger publishers but isn't thorough for some of the smaller ones.
-
Seven Seas:
The full list of danmei novels licensed by Seven Seas is here. The full list of danmei manhua licensed by Seven Seas is here.
These titles are in various stages of publication, from "entire series released" to "license literally announced less than a week ago." As far as I know, all Seven Seas titles are available world-wide, through major distributors and libraries, and in e-book and print formats. Seven Seas translation quality varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).
Mo Xiang Tong Xiu titles:
The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System (Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong)
Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (Mo Dao Zu Shi)

Rosmei:
Rosmei licenses are Singapore distribution rights only. There is a list of international partners organizing group orders here. I've personally placed my orders through Yiggybean, as discussed in reply to this ask. Most of these titles are only being released as print editions, tho titles that weren't originally on JJWXC (of which there are several here) WILL have e-book editions. My first book from Rosmei arrived, and I found the translation and editing to be very strong. I can't speak to how accurate it may be to the Chinese original, but it read smoothly and had very few errors. Overall, though they've made some mistakes, they've been communicative and responsive.
Huai Shang titles:
Breaking Through the Clouds (Po Yun)
Hunt for the Leviathan (Po Yun 2 Tun Hai)
Ning Yuan titles:
BAIHE: At the World's Mercy
BAIHE (I think???) The Creator's Grace

Peach Flower House:
Unfortunately, Peach Flower House has gone out of business. Peach Flower House titles were primarily for sale through their website and through some distributors, such as Amazon.com. Whether titles are e-book only, print only, or both varied by title. In my opinion, Peach Flower House has inconsistent inconsistent editing quality, but the books are very readable.
Da Feng Gua Guo:
The Imperial Uncle (Huang Shu)
Peach Blossom Debt (Taohua Zhai)
Other Titles:
Golden Terrace (Huang Jin Tai) by Cang Wu Bin Bai
In the Dark (Zai Hei An Zhong) by Jin Shisi Chai
Little Mushroom (Xiao Mogu) by Shisi
University of the Underworld (Yinjian Daxue) by Ziloi
-
Via Lactea:
The partial list of danmei novels licensed by Via Lactea is here, but there are titles I've seen them selling that aren't on this list.
Via Lactea titles are primarily for sale through their website and through some distributors, such as Amazon.com. All titles are either print-only or e-book + print. Only a handful have actually been released, the rest are licensed and presumably in progress. I've now read three titles published by Via Lactea and while the translations are decent I could wish the editing was more consistent. Everything reads as if it would have been improved by one more thorough proof read.
Jing Shui Bian Titles:
Salad Days (Jing Jiu)
Silent Hearts (Mo Mai)
Qing Lv Titles:
Painting Against the Natural Grain (Huahua Ben Shi Ni Tian Er Xing) by Qing Lv
Raising Myself in 2006 by Qing Lv

Aloha Comics:
A tiny, Hawaii-based press focusing on manhua. Titles are available through major retailers such as Amazon and Bookshop.org. I've purchased one of these titles - Nirvana in Fire - and was please with the quality despite a couple minor errors.
All these titles are manhua!
Day Off by Qing Cai
Heaven Official's Blessing Animation Manhua by Bilibili and Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (this is a manhua made based on the donghua, using donghua art)
Here U Are by DJUN
Link Click by Li Haoling and Haoliners (not technically danmei!)
Nirvana in Fire (Lang Ya Bang) by Hai Yan (not technically danmei!)
-
Monogatari Novels:
Monogatari Novels is based in Spain. These titles can also be ordered from at least some major retailers. Note that there has been some controversy about Monogatari Novels. I'm personally not ordering these works until more information is available.
Due to a lawsuit between Monogatari Novels and BLoved Publishing, How to Survive as a Villain and The Legendary Master's Wife are currently on hold.
BAIHE: A Clear and Muddy Loss of Love (Jing Wei Qing Shang) by Please Don't Laugh
BAIHE: Female General and Eldest Princess (NuJiangjun he Zhang Gongzhu) by Please Don't Laugh
How to Survive as a Villain (Chuan Yue Cheng Fanpai Yao Ru He Huo Ming) manhua by Yi Yi Yi Yi
The Legendary Master's Wife (Chuanshuo Zhi Zhu de Furen) by Yin Ya
The Silent Concubine (Ya Nu) by Qiang Tang
BAIHE: Soulmate manhua by Wenzhi Lizi
-
BLoved Publishing:
ngl I can't figure out exactly what is up with this, and there seems to be some controversy related to them and their relationship with Monogatari Novels. Their website is depressingly low on details. However, this list is for completeness, so here we are.
Due to a lawsuit between Monogatari Novels and BLoved Publishing, How to Survive as a Villain and The Legendary Master's Wife are currently on hold.
How to Survive as a Villain (Chuan Yue Cheng Fanpai Yao Ru He Huo Ming) manhua by Yi Yi Yi Yi
The Legendary Master's Wife (Chuanshuo Zhi Zhu de Furen) by Yin Ya
-
Chaleuria:
As far as I can tell, Chaleuria has not updated their webpage since April 2023, so the current status of in-progress titles is unknown. All titles are digital and/or e-book, and I'm not sure how to purchase them as I haven't tried.
The Complete Guide to the Use and Care of a Personal Assistant (Zhuli Shiyong Zhinan) by Why Radiance
Deep in the Act (Ru Xi) by Tongzi
Fake Slackers (Wei Zhuang Xue Zha) by Mu Gua Huang (no longer available)
From Body to Love (Leng Yan E Nan: Xian Shenhou Ai) by Wan Wan Yi Xia
Interstellar Power Couple (Xingji Qiangli Lianyin) by Kun Cheng Xiongmao (no longer available)
Intoxicated Friends (Zui Qing Zhi Pengyou) by Ye Shu Ying
The Long Chase for the President's Spouse (Zongcai Zhui Fu Lu Manman) by Three Thousand Crow Language

Urban Tales of Demons and Spirits (Dushi Yaogui Lu) by Qie Er
World Hopping: Avenge Our Love (Ni Wufa Yuliao de Fenshou, Wo Du Neng Gei Ni Song Shang) by Xiaomao Bu Ai Jiao (no longer available)
-
Webnovel:
When I first made this list, I heard that Webnovel had a few titles but couldn't actually find them - but now I've found them, thanks to a list someone else put together. I'm including direct links to them, since I had so much trouble finding them at all.
Comrade: Almost a Cat-astrophic Love Story (Jintian ye Yao Nuli Dang Zhimao) by Demonic Fire (link)
My Boyfriend is a Dragon (Nanpiao Shi Tiaolong) by Chubby Strawberry Sauce (link)
The National Sweetheart Livestreamer is a Pro! (Quanmin Zhubo Shi Duiba) by Mo Shang Wang (link)
-
Honorable Mentions:
There are a handful of titles I know of that are official translations of C Novels. These are not books with contextual queerness, but for folks with an interest in Chinese history and culture, they are worth checking out anyway, especially because understanding these stories can help understand the above books. Also, some have active shipping fandoms (for example, I've written for Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Daomu Biji). I've included two above under the entry for titles from Aloha Comics (Link Click and Nirvana in Fire) and here are a couple others I currently know of:
Dream of the Red Chamber (Hong Lou Meng) by Cao Xueqin, available in translation for free from Project Gutenberg
The Grave Robbers’ Chronicles (Daomu Biji) by Nanpai Sanshu (six volumes are available in English from Things Asian Press)
Journey to the West (Xiyou Ji) by Wu Cheng-en, in four volumes from University of Chicago Press
The Legend of the Condor Heroes (She Diao Yingxiong Chuan) by Jin Yong, in four volumes from St. Martin’s Press
Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo Yanyi), attributed to Luo Guanzhong, available in translations for free from Archive.org
The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants (Zonglie Xiayi Chuan), attributed to Shi Yukun, available in translation for free from Archive.org
Water Margin (Shuihu Zhuan) by Shi Nai’an, from Tuttle Publishing
RESOURCE: List of Chinese speculative fiction in English translation
RESOURCE: More Chinese speculative fiction in English translation
I will add to the "Honorable Mentions" list if I find any other more mainstream titles with official translations.
-
Rumored Licenses:
Sometimes, I hear rumors about titles being licensed before the license is announced - and thus before we know which publisher has licensed them (assuming the rumor is even true). I thought I should note these somewhere. Titles I know of rumors about currently are:
A Certain Someone (Moumou) by Mu Su Li
Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know (Mozun Ye Xiang Zhidao) by Cyan Wings (a Spanish edition of this has been formally announced, which might account for the rumor)
The Fourteenth Year of Chenghua (Chenghua Shisi Nian) by Meng Xi Shi
Guide on How to Fail at Online Dating (Wanglian Fanche Zhinan) by Jiang Zi Bei
Immortal Koi is Going to Debut (Jinli Daxian Yao Chudao) by Mo Xi Ke
Mist (Bowu) by Wei Feng Ji Xu
-
A handful of other licenses are mentioned on the Carrd I linked at the beginning of this post; I have no idea the status of those titles and wasn't able to find information on them while putting together this post other than what was listed on that Carrd, so I've omitted them.
Now go forth, and buy some books!

Arsenal Military Academy
Year : 2019 | Country : CN | Nb of episodes: 48
My rate: 9/10
Synopsis :
In the early years of the 20th century, Chinese military forces find themselves locked in a drawn-out, bloody conflict as they fight back again the Imperial Japanese army.
The government drafts young male conscripts to defend the besieged northeast of the country – but a woman named Xie Xiang also wants in on the action. She decides to cut her hair short and assume her brother’s identity in a bid to join the Chinese army. Xie Xiang quickly proves herself more than capable in soldiery, and soon wins herself a place in an elite military academy in Shanghai.
At the academy, she befriends a number of young male recruits, including quarrelsome rich kid Gu Yan Zheng and the gentle and introverted Shen Jun San. As the recruits begin to hone their skills, they grow in confidence – and decide to take measures of their own in an attempt to foil the invading forces.
But their struggle becomes more complicated when both Gu Yan Zheng and Shen Jun San begin to develop feelings for Xie Xiang. Will the comrades-in-arms survive the bitter ravages of military conflict? Will love derail Xie Xiang’s quest for justice? And will all really prove fair in love and war?
Main cast :
Bai Lu as Xie Xiang / Xie Liang Chen
Xu Kai as Gu Yan Zhen
Toby Lee as Shen Jun Shan
Wu Jia Yi as Qu Man Ting
My thoughts on this drama :
This is one of these dramas that make expectations for future ones extremely high…Because it is extremely good. Who cares about actual romance, gimme some heartfelt bromance instead! Almost everything was on point. I say almost because they had to use some overused tropes... Like political corruption... But considering the story, it was logical, just annoying. Bai Lu and Xu Kai once more showed their absolutely adorable chemistry. And damn! Xu Kai is so expressive, how does one even do that with one's face muscles?? His face is an open book, absolutely incredible. The story is superbly written, and if you manage not to be bothered by the very obvious Chinese propaganda and anti-Japanese discourses, you'll really enjoy the 48 episodes. For once, I did not think it was too much. A story that is that level of complex needs many episodes to untangle all plot lines. Considering that the actors are all pretty young (between 25 and 30 years old), I must say they all played their part perfectly. It is impossible not to get attached, even to the ever so annoying and clingy Manting (with the exception of Miss Zhitian maybe). If you are looking for intense romance though, well, try elsewhere. There are some background romances, but it's pretty lowkey, and the interactions are toned down. The few displayed scenes were beautiful though, very touching. The sets, the costumes, and the way it was filmed, with that slightly yellowish filter, it gave this drama a breathtaking authenticity. It was like jumping right in the past, and seeing the events unfold, one by one. There was joy, pain, laughter, tears, smiles, anger...It's an emotionally packed drama, and I loved every second of it. Now to find something at least as good... If you're hesitating because of the 'girl disguising as a boy' trope, then don't, really. Bai Lu actually pulls it off. She managed to give that tomboyish vibe and made her character very believable. Ouch, my hands are still sore from clapping too hard at the end of the final episode... I highly recommend this drama, really.

Chapter 46: Cry for Help
Chapter 46.1: Cry for Help
Translator(s): Zryuu
Editor(s): juurensha
“Wu! Wu!”
The horse ride was a bumpy one. Chen Xing had both hands tied behind his back and was strapped onto the back of the horse by the waist. Clinks of metal plates could be heard; Sima Wei, dressed in a suit of black armour, rushed out of the Yin mountains with Chen Xing. They travelled along the commercial route outside the Great Wall and turned eastwards.
Sima Wei had abducted him. Within the blink of an eye, he had already urged his horse to gallop several hundreds of miles. They had even passed by Chi Le Chuan along the way, but he didn’t go up north along the road to the river to enter the Great Wall, but instead continued heading east.
At noon, Sima Wei threw Chen Xing on the ground, loosened his ropes, then threw him a jerky biscuit and casually pointed at a stream not far away.
Chen Xing: “....”
“Xiang Shu will come and save me.” Chen Xing devoured the biscuit and tore off some jerky to eat because he was absolutely starving. He decided that “a wise man submits to circumstances”; since there was no use in him resisting, he would rack his brains to think of ways to slow down Sima Wei.
When Sima Wei was travelling, he wouldn’t respond to anything Chen Xing said. This time, he replied in a low voice, “He won’t. He’ll just think you left by yourself.”
These words struck Chen Xing right in his sore spot -- crap, what if Xiang Shu really thought that way? He had talked about leaving before Xiang Shu
went up the mountains after all.
It was very possible! Before this, he had also left just like that without saying a word. This was different from Xiang Shu seeing him get abducted with his own eyes. Xiao Shan was sleeping, so no one would tell Xiang Shu that he, Chen Xing, had been captured. During this period of time, Chen Xing has always believed that Xiang Shu has his own responsibilities as the Great Chanyu, so he always implied that he would leave whenever they spoke.
If Xiang Shu thought that Chen Xing had just left that quietly because he didn’t want to say goodbye, he would return to Karakorum himself, and no one would come save Chen Xing anymore. He has to find a way to break free from this predicament himself!
A few crows were perched atop a tree. Chen Xing tried to activate his Heart Lamp a few times, but he didn’t sense Xiang Shu. Maybe he was too far away, or maybe… he could only accept this helpless reality -- Xiang Shu wasn’t coming to save him.
So Chen Xing could only plan his own resistance. He never stopped scheming along the way, thinking about how to sneak off while this asshole wasn’t paying attention. However, Sima Wei neither ate nor slept. Every time they stopped to take a breather, it was for Chen Xing’s sake, and they would continue on the road after he was done resting. Chen Xing couldn’t find a chance to escape at all.
Chen Xing kept trying to fish information out of him, but Sima Wei was tight-lipped and never responded to him. Just like this, they travelled at full speed for six days.
Sima Wei, “Get up, we’re moving.”
Chen Xing, “Where on earth do you want to take me?!”
Sima Wei didn’t reply. Chen Xing continued, “I want to take a nap. I’m about to become bow-legged from riding on a horse for so long, my feet hurt.”
So Sima Wei could only let him remain where he was, while he got up by himself to survey the surroundings.
Seeing Sima Wei leave the woods, Chen Xing looked around, then turned around and broke into a run.
“Caw! Caw!” The crows suddenly beat their wings and flew up in alarm. Chen Xing rushed right out of the forest and enacted a pursuit scene with Sima Wei. Before one incense stick could finish burning, he was caught in a mountain cave. What awaited him next was him getting bundled like a dumpling and thrown onto the horse before they continued east.
They hastened on their journey for close to ten days. Sima Wei always moved forward along the Great Wall. Every time they stopped, their temporary campsite would always be surrounded with crows. Chen Xing struggled on the horse and said, “Can’t you take me to a place where there’s people?”
Sima Wei took Chen Xing along with him and never entered the passes along the Great Wall. At last, they left the Great Wall and went north, then entered Youzhou’s boundary. Along the way, Chen Xing had seen the Qin army from afar several times. Sima Wei had excellent concealment techniques; he bypassed them and continued heading southeast.
By the time he saw the plaque "Zhuojun", Chen Xing knew that they would arrive in Goguryeo territory if they continued southeast. After leaving the Central Plains, Sima Wei finally relaxed his watch over Chen Xing.
“I really won’t escape anymore!” Chen Xing said. “We’re almost at Silla now; I wouldn’t be able to find my way back even if I escaped. Untie me, Sima Wei!”
Sima Wei replied, “Attempts shouldn’t be made more than three times.”
Chen Xing got what he wished for and was finally untied. The two of them entered one of Goguryeo’s largest cities, Pyongyang. Most of the residents here are Buyeo people, so a large number of them could understand the Xianbei language. Sima Wei changed into a set of regular clothes that he had found somewhere and kept his armour in his carry-on bundle. Then he wore a conical bamboo hat that covered half of his face.
When the Buyeo people saw these two travellers pass by, they would stare at him curiously. Some of them even inquired out of curiosity, so Chen Xing replied to them in the Xianbei language.
“What are you two here for?” The Buyeo person asked. “Did you guys come from the Jin country?”
Sima Wei asked Chen Xing, “What did they say?”
Chen Xing knew Sima Wei didn’t understand, so he could make trouble for him however he wanted now.
“They asked where we’re heading to,” Chen Xing said. Sima Wei said, “Ask them where we can find a boat.”
So Chen Xing said to the locals in Xianbei language, “I was kidnapped by this person! I was taken all the way here from Chi Le Chuan!”
People in the city started a lively discussion, and many began to surround them. All of them wore robes of the literati and bamboo hats, dressed in the style of a Confucian scholar.
Ever since Sosurim of Goguryeo came to power, the Imperial College of Supreme Learning was established in Pyongyang with the aim of nurturing scholars. From the Han dynasty to the Cao Wei dynasty to the Jin dynasty, the doctrines of Confucianism in the Central Plains has always been admired by many vassal states. All ethnic groups took pride in learning the Han language and reading Han books. This group of scholars had just finished their lessons in the Imperial College. In conformance with the virtue of chivalry where one intervened at the sight of injustice, they blocked Sima Wei and Chen Xing’s path one after another, scrutinising this strange combo.
One of the scholars asked, “How can we save you? Can we be of any help?”
Sima Wei, “What did they say?”
Chen Xing waved his hand at them. Compared to the other drought fiend kings, Sima Wei’s attitude might be much gentler, but Chen Xing didn’t know if he would suddenly go mad. If he were to go on a killing spree within the city, it would only harm innocent people and cost them their lives, so he didn’t ask for help immediately and explained, “This guy is insane, he has killed a lot of people on our way. Everyone, please don’t act rashly.”
Sima Wei, “?”
Everyone asked, “Then what do we do?”
After speaking, Chen Xing relayed to Sima Wei, “They said that the boats won’t be leaving anytime soon and asked us to rest in the city. We’ll have to check again in a few days.”
Sima Wei observed the expressions of the crowd, then said to Chen Xing, “Don’t lie to me.”
Chen Xing, “I’m not lying!”
Sima Wei, “They had only said four words just now, how could that turn into such long strings of sentences after translation?”
Chen Xing, “That’s how Xianbei language is like! Don’t you know any Xianbei people? If you think I’m too wordy, then you talk to them. I don’t care anymore.”
Sima Wei, “We’ll go to the pier to look for a boat.” Chen Xing, “Wait wait wait...”
Chen Xing pondered for a bit, then smiled calmly to the crowd with his hands clasped. “Geges, please help me inform the guards in the city. I’ll trick him into resting in an inn for awhile first. If you bump into anyone asking around for me, please let them know.”
Sima Wei, “What are you saying this time?”
Chen Xing, “I asked them when the boats would set sail.”
Sima Wei, “Your tone was clearly descriptive, not inquisitive.”
Chen Xing asked in the Xianbei language, “Where are the inns in the city?”
Someone pointed somewhere far away. Chen Xing signalled to Sima Wei as if to say see, I’m asking.
One of the scholars said, “I’ll go to the King’s guards now to report the situation in detail. Be careful.”
Chen Xing quickly nodded. Sima Wei: “?”
Chen Xing, “They said that we’ll have to wait for at least three to five days. Let’s go ba.”
So under everyone’s gaze, Chen Xing changed from being a guest to acting as a host and leading Sima Wei away. The two of them passed through a market. Chen Xing was secretly delighted; he knew that Sima Wei must be filled with doubts right now, so he had to think of something to divert his line of thought for now. He pointed at the goods in the stalls and said, “Do you want to buy some rouge?”
Sima Wei, “???”
Chen Xing said, “They seem to be doubting you a little, because your face is blue.”
Sima Wei, “...”
“Apply some rouge,” Chen Xing said. “Cover it a little, do you have money? Take some money out to spend.” At the same time, he thought that if some guards came to save him later, he could say he had nothing to do with it. In any case, he just had to say that the crowd of spectators had thought Sima Wei’s complexion seemed off so they reported it to the authorities, and it would all be fine.
But Sima Wei didn’t expect to spend money here and was penniless. Chen Xing came up with an idea. “Your armour can be pawned off for some money; that helmet should be worth quite a lot of money.”
Sima Wei, “You want to pawn off my armour?”
Chen Xing, “What else? Don’t we need money to take a boat? And we still need to eat and buy clothes too. Even if you don’t need to eat, I do.”
So Sima Wei was duped by Chen Xing into pawning his helmet off. The two of them successfully found a place to stay. Chen Xing noticed a few crows flying away from the entrance of the store. He had a nagging sensation that he had seen those few crows on their way here.
But all crows in the world were generally black and all looked about the same, so he might be wrong.
A lightning streak flashed across the sky and thunder boomed. A downpour suddenly started. All the people along the streets rushed to avoid getting drenched.
After entering the inn, Chen Xing stopped caring about Sima Wei and instructed a waiter to prepare some hot water for a bath. He felt much better after changing his clothes.
“I’ll help you cover up a little ba.” Chen Xing studied Sima Wei and started applying rouge for him to cover up his dead person complexion.
Sima Wei closed the four windows in the room. Chen Xing mixed the powder, and just when he was about to approach him, Sima Wei grabbed Chen Xing’s wrist.
“Exorcist, save me.” Sima said in a very soft voice.

Chen Xing, “!!!”
When Chen Xing heard that, he almost overturned the rouge plate. Suddenly, he noticed something. He looked up at the huge beam in the room and could vaguely hear the "pitter patter" of rain hitting the tiles.
“Shi Hai dispatched the jackdaws to monitor us the whole way,” Sima Wei whispered. “I must take you to Huanmo Palace, I have no other choice.”
Chen Xing, “You… you… Sima Wei?”
Sima Wei continued, “Long story short, can you use the Heart Lamp to break the control Shi Hai has over me?”
Chen Xing murmured, “I don’t know. You were the Prince Yin of Chu when you were alive, right? Hold on, you’ve been dead for nearly a hundred years, why haven’t you entered samsara?”
Another crack of thunder exploded. A few rays of white light penetrated through the window.
Sima Wei stood up. He paced back and forth within the room, some bewilderment evident in his voice.
“I don’t know who I am anymore,“ Sima Wei muttered to himself. “I only remember a few fragmented pieces of my memory from when I was alive. I have the memories of a lot of people, and the most fragments I have come from Sima Wei, but I… I… I just know that I’m different from them.”
“Them?” Chen Xing asked. “How many of the Eight Princes have been revived?”
The Sima Lun they saw in Chang’an City, Sima Yue in the North, and including Sima Wei, this was the third drought fiend king Chen Xing has seen.
“Six,” Sima Wei said. “Shi Hai wants to capture you and use resentment to refine the Heart Lamp magical artifact on you, turning it into the eye of the Ten Thousand Spirits Array, to offer as a sacrifice to the Devil God.”
Chen Xing immediately said, “What’s the Ten Thousand Spirits Array?”
“There are seven Ten Thousand Spirits Array,” Sima Wei said. “I only heard a little from their conversation. They are all driven by magical artifacts that absorb resentment. When the seven arrays are activated at the same time, the Devil God will come back to life. He awakened us Eight Princes to guard the arrays for him.”
Chen Xing turned quiet. Sima Wei continued, “Yin Yang Mirror, Zheng Drum, they were all set up by Shi Hai. Two have already fallen into your hands. As for the Ten Thousand Spirits Array, I only know that one is in Chang’an.”
Chen Xing jumped to his next question. “What about the other magical artifacts?”
Sima Wei shook his head. Evidently, even he didn’t know much inside information.
Chen Xing asked again, “Where is Shi Hai hiding?”
Sima Wei shook his head again slowly. Chen Xing said, “What can I do for you?”
Sima Wei, “Can you kill him? As long as you kill him, I can be liberated.”
Chen Xing didn’t even know what kind of yao Shi Hai was, let alone ascertain where that guy was hiding. Killing him was easier said than done.
“Shi Hai asked you to take me back to the Central Plains, so didn’t he arrange for a meeting place?” Chen Xing asked again.
Sima Wei looked up at the roof and replied, “The jackdaws will keep an eye on my movements at all times. After entering the Central Plains, he would naturally dispatch people to come find us.”
Chen Xing raised his hand, signalling to Sima Wei to give him some time to think. Ten Thousand Spirits Array, Shi Hai, Devil God… magical artifacts. Sima Wei continued, “Now we’re still far from Shi Hai, and his control over me has been weakened by the distance. You have to find a way to free me.”
“What then?” Chen Xing said. “After you’re free, what do you want to do?”
Sima Wei murmured, “I don’t know. In any case, I don’t want to be enslaved by him like this anymore.”
Chen Xing said, “I… I can try, I’m just afraid that I won’t be able to do it. Without the support of the spiritual Qi of the heavens and earth, the Heart Lamp’s powers are limited.”
What Sima Wei told him had pierced straight through whatever Chen Xing thought to be true before. Within an instant, Chen Xing understood it all. Right afterwards, he heard the crows on the roof caw again.
“He’s beginning to have doubts.” Sima Wei got up and pulled the windows open. Torrential rain beat down relentlessly and drenched the windowsill, so both of them stopped talking. The rain was getting heavier and heavier. Shining white water curtains could be seen everywhere. Chen Xing wanted to get close to the windowsill to take a look, but Sima Wei made a gesture from a place light didn’t touch. The crows were perched right under the edge of the tiles, staring at them.
“Let me go,” Chen Xing mouthed to Sima Wei.
Sima Wei didn’t reply. He glanced at Chen Xing, both his eyes appearing turbid. Chen Xing couldn’t determine what he was thinking for a moment, but amidst the pitter patter of rain, the soft clanging of weapons was faintly discernible.
He closed both eyes, pondering the links between all this. Suddenly, the Heart Lamp flashed in the darkness.
Sima Wei stared at Chen Xing quietly. A thought surfaced in Chen Xing’s mind: what about doing it now? He had never tried injecting the power of the Heart Lamp into a drought fiend king, or even a living corpse before. Would he be able to dispel the resentment in their bodies if he did that? And after dispelling it, would it forcibly break Shi Hai’s control and connection to them? Or would it burn their bodies to ashes?
A gentle ball of light appeared in Chen Xing’s hand. He raised it. Sima Wei spun around and faced Chen Xing. His hand reached for his weapon; it seemed he was subconsciously afraid of that light, yet he was doing his utmost to refrain from attacking Chen Xing.
Chen Xing took a deep breath. But right at that moment--
A loud sound rang out -- Xiang Shu, along with his sword, smashed through the brick wall from next door and hurtled in!
“Get down!” Xiang Shu shouted. “Heart Lamp!”
The jackdaws outside the room began cawing madly. Sima Wei unsheathed his sword!
Chen Xing withdrew his Heart Lamp. The moment he bowed his head, Xiang Shu’s sword swept past from above Chen Xing’s back, aiming right at Sima Wei. Sima Wei wasn’t wearing his armour. The sword struck him in his chest, and his ribs caved in with a muffled "thud". He was knocked out of the window from the impact, flying like a kite that had its string cut! Then another "bang" sounded -- he had smashed through the roof of a house outside the inn, which collapsed with a rumble!
Chen Xing looked up, his gaze meeting with Xiang Shu’s. Xiang Shu was dressed in hunting attire from head to toe and looked just like a savage. His entire body was drenched, and both his eyes were thoroughly red; it was clear that he hadn’t slept much while chasing them for nearly ten days. Xiang Shu didn’t go over to the window to take a look either. He wrapped
his left arm around Chen Xing, took a step back, jumped off from a crouch and smashed through the roof to fly out!
Tumultuous rain poured, as if a hole had opened up in the sky. Chen Xing was soaked from head to toe. While being dragged by Xiang Shu, his foot slipped. The jackdaws all unfurled their wings and flew up one after another, but their movements were sluggish in this downpour. The sound of crossbows rang out all around them -- the warriors sent by Goguryeo were all covering Xiang Shu and Chen Xing as they left.
“When did you come!” Chen Xing shouted.
“Just now!” Xiang Shu shouted back. As soon as Chen Xing turned his head, he saw a gray figure fly out from the place it fell on with a "whoosh" and brandish a long sabre -- it was Sima Wei dressed in a gray robe. Wherever the Qi wave brushed by, tiles overturned and swirled in the air.
Xiang Shu held Chen Xing and turned sideways, then both of them slid down from the edge of the roof. Along the way, arrows fell like rain and blotted out the sky within moments, blocking Sima Wei’s path.
“Watch out for the crows...”
“Can you run?!” Xiang Shu shouted. Chen Xing, “I can! I can!”
Both of them were thoroughly drenched. Chen Xing was overwhelmed with joy from the bottom of his heart; you finally came! I just knew you’d come! When he grabbed Xiang Shu’s hand, all of his worries vanished without a trace, and he just ran with him in the rain.
Xiang Shu turned back and looked at the direction Sima Wei was chasing them from. Ordinary archers couldn’t hope to stop him, so he could only lure him to a place where there weren’t as many people around.
“I can’t run anymore!” Chen Xing was about to breathe his last. He shouted, “Run while carrying me ba!”
Xiang Shu: “…”
Sima Wei let out a loud shout. With both hands wielding his sword, he suddenly came down from high above, taking a shortcut as he slid down a roof in the alley. Right after, another Goguryeo warrior rushed over and blocked the entrance of the alley, shouting, “Leave, quickly!”
Chen Xing couldn’t help but feel moved. Xiang Shu had already saved the person he wanted to save, so he didn’t bother to continue the fight. He rushed out of the small alley with Chen Xing in tow, but a large number of cavalry appeared in front of them. Just as Chen Xing was processing his surprise, thinking that there were more enemies to face, the armored person at the front pointed to the left, signalling for them to run in that direction. Then, the cavalry all brandished their weapons, ready to start charging into the alley.
“How did you know I was captured? I thought you wouldn’t come!”
“You’re going to be the death of me!” Xiang Shu wiped off the water on his face and roared angrily at Chen Xing.
Thunder clapped with a loud "boom". Chen Xing didn’t hear what he just said and smiled as he asked Xiang Shu, “What? What did you say?”
Xiang Shu, “My throat hurts! I’m not talking to you!”
The two of them rushed across the long street, facing the torrential downpour. Suddenly everything was emptied, revealing a level pier with a radius of several miles. A ship was currently pulling up its anchor and unfolding its sails to leave the harbor, trying to set sail by force in this thunderstorm.
Xiang Shu looked back. Chen Xing asked again, “Who was that just now? You know him?”
“King Goguryeo.” Xiang Shu casually replied. He placed his sword on his back and carried Chen Xing bridal style--
Sima Wei, with his drenched robe dragging behind him, leapt a few times in the alley outside the pier. Like a water bomb, brilliant splashes trailed behind him and with every time he stepped onto a brick wall, the wall
would be smashed into flying pieces with a loud rumble. He accelerated a few times, each time stirring up a strong gust of wind, then swung his long sabre and shot towards Xiang Shu and Chen Xing.
Xiang Shu took a few steps as a run-up, and with Chen Xing in his arms, he stepped onto a wooden box in the pier and crushed the box into pieces. With one leap, he flew towards the ship that was three zhang away!
As soon as Xiang Shu and Chen Xing left the ground, Sima Wei had already swung his blade down with a force that could shake the heavens. The air behind him exploded, and when he struck the ground, the floor tiles were smashed into powder! Meanwhile, Chen Xing was carried by Xiang Shu amidst this earth-shaking chaos, flying from the pier to the huge ship on the sea!
Sima Wei didn’t land the hit. Xiang Shu and Chen Xing somersaulted in mid air and fell on deck, then slid nearly a zhang away. The boatmen on the ship pulled back with a "whoosh", all of them staring at the two of them in amazement.
Chen Xing was seeing stars from the heavy impact. He struggled to get up. Xiang Shu, with his sword as support, barely managed to sit up and kept gasping for breath. Water droplets dripped from all over his body.
Sima Wei leapt onto the highest roof in front of the pier and stared at the two of them leaving on the ship.
Chen Xing, “Hu...hu...”
Xiang Shu slowly got up. Chen Xing slipped on the deck. He went to the side of the ship and stared at Sima Wei, his heart welling up with complicated emotions.
“He finally stopped chasing us,” Chen Xing panted.
The Goguryeo warriors had already surrounded that house in a tight encirclement. Sima Wei stood on the roof, unyielding. With his left hand locked on the hilt of his sword, his right wrist tilted horizontally, and a
gathering storm surged around his body. A pillar of resentment soared into the sky!
Xiang Shu, “...”
At this moment, the ship was nearly 50 steps away from Sima Wei. The boatmen on the ship started turning the crossbow and pointed into the distance, but Sima Wei wasn’t fazed. The resentment on that sword converged into a black crescent-shaped arc, and along with him drawing a circle with his sword, it was gathering an extremely strong and terrifying force. As long as he swung it down, it would shoot over with a whoosh and cut this huge ship in two!
Another lightning bolt flashed, its dazzling light illuminating the horrified expressions of everyone both inside and outside the pier!
Xiang Shu raised his sword and said in a deep voice, “Give me all of your mana.”
“No no no!” Chen Xing immediately refused. “We’re gonna die! Don’t mess around like that! This ship will be crushed!”
As long as Sima Wei waves his sword, whether or not Xiang Shu could resist it was one thing -- even if this ship didn’t get crushed, it would still be overturned by the waves! Chen Xing cried out in a panic, “Don’t act recklessly! Anything will do, Iuppiter! Save me--”
Sima Wei raised his long sabre, and just when he was about to release a strike that would shatter the heavens, a lightning streak flashed in the sky.
"Boom!" Thunder clapped, a lightning bolt struck down and was lured by the long sabre of Sima Wei, who was standing in an elevated place. Within an instant, the entire house was struck into pieces by the lightning. Sima Wei’s body was burnt into a crisp, and he fell backwards. The gathered resentment exploded on the spot and vanished without a trace.
Chen Xing murmured, “Ah, it came right on time, that’s great. Didn’t I ask you not to act recklessly? Now see, you just got struck by lightning.”
Then he lost all of his strength, slipped down from the side of the ship and sat on the deck.
