WTNV quick rundown - 90 - Who's a good boy? Part 2
Featuring the voice of Kevin R Free as Kevin of Desert Bluffs.
Click here for the other rundowns here!
You wanna go outside? Outside? You wanna go outside? You do? You do? I bet you want to go outside. I bet you do. Welcome to Night Vale.
Cecil trips as he tries to run from the Beagle Puppy, but is saved by Sheriff Sam who shoots it with their shotgun. The Beagle Puppy is unarmed. Sheriff Sam takes Cecil into City Council's chambers.
City Council is still there and say that they plan to lure all of the Strangers and the Beagle Puppy into the Dog Park by using the remaining NV citizens as bait.
Cecil requests to see Old Woman Josie, they all escape through the ductwork and take Dana's car to Josie's. Cecil wants the help of the angels to lure and fight the Strangers.
Cecil also wants to cut a deal with Hiram. Dana refuses to make a deal, but she says she will find out what he knows about the Strangers.
They meet with Sheriff Sam who is leading a mob of around 50 people. Included amongst them is a leader from the Joyous Congregation (dressed in long yellow robes, a rectangular hat and wearing a large medallion), John Peters (you know, the farmer?) and John Peter (remember, the pharmacist?), Tamika Flynn and her teenage militia, Sarah Sultan and many ex-DB citizens.
They march through the city chanting prayers together, picking up Carlos, Abby, Steve, Janice and anyone else who is still alive as the Strangers stand and watch them. The Strangers numbers have also increased a lot and the Beagle Puppy stands at the head of them.
The Beagle Puppy speaks through Sheriff Sam, and seems to be starting to take Steve. Cecil grabs him and shakes him to stop him from being taken. The Erika's fly overhead, Hiram flies down to fight too.
The Beagle Puppy and the Strangers disappear, but nobody is sure exactly why. Those taken are normal once again. The town has power and water again. Cecil says it could have been their chanting though he's not religious that much himself he doesn't rule it out. It could also have been Khoshekh, who disappeared then reappeared quite hurt with a piece of a dogs ear in his mouth.
Janice says it was Tamika and her teenage militia. Josie says it was the angels. Melony Pennington says that she and Megan Wallaby created a computer virus which took the Strangers down (computer virus' are completely airborne according to Intern Kareem). Sheriff Sam and City Council say their plan to lure the Strangers and Beagle Puppy into the dog park worked perfectly. Michelle and Maureen claim a secret Beyonce album they were listening to got rid of the Strangers. Hiram also fought the Strangers but was not parodoned for helping defend the town.
However, the FOW claims that nobody in town drove them away. The Strangers and the Beagle Puppy chose to leave and they might choose to come back one day.
Weather: "The Queer Gospel" by Erin McKeown
City Council wear long black robes and have reddish-brown teeth.
When the Erikas are around, Cecil hears a cello and smells confectioners sugar.
All the Radio Station bathrooms are unisex now.
You can apparently tell which people are DB citizens by looking at their eyes.
Some basic chants that Cecil recognised as being similar to ones he learnt in Torah school are: "Please God, destroy our enemies, Amen", some really long gurgling sounds and "DE-FENSE!" while clapping in rhythm.
Kevin leaves a message for Cecil saying that 'many of his old pals' from DB have moved to the Desert Otherworld. They've made a little city with roads and a school and a radio station and it apparently looks just like the old DB. They've decided to call it Desert Bluffs Too.
Stay tuned next for a deep sigh. Deep. Deep. No, deeper than that. Good night, Night Vale. Good night.
Proverb: "You can tell a lot about someone by coming into our office and confessing everything you know about them."

WTNV Quick rundown - 141 - Save Dark Owl Records
Read the rest here!
Featuring the voices of Kate Jones as Michelle Nguyen, Maureen Johnson as Maureen, Meg Bashwiner as Deb and co-written by Brie Williams.
The prison of your own mind is undergoing budget cuts. Welcome to Night Vale.
Michelle Nyugen says she is throwing a fundraising party as the opening of a new Burger Barn/GladTown Record's store has essentially put her out of business and made it so she can't pay her bills. Cecil says he will be there doing a remote broadcast to help drum up interest.
Ironically his sponsor is the very store that is putting Dark Owl Records out of business. This answers both Michelle and Maureen when he appears. Maureen pours iced coffee on his laptop and Cecil rushes off to find something to clean it with.
During this time both Maureen and Michelle take over the broadcast briefly. Maureen waxes slightly poetic about Michelle then says she was crawling around in the vents which eventually opened up so she could run and led back here, where she plans to take a nap on the piles of old CD-ROMS etc. Michelle reveals that she doesn't remember where her house is and hardly leaves her store, so doesn't know what/where she'd be without it.
Her neighbour, Matt (who is a giant coconut crab who lives under the lot behind the store) emerges from the ground and starts to murder the partygoers because he hates parties. Michelle kicks most people out and allows Matt to eat anyone wearing airpods to calm him down. According to Cecil he's also super boring to talk to.
The owner of the new store, Jules, sends Michelle a cheque with the rest of the money she needs and a letter saying that in order to not be sent to The Cavern they need at least one competitor in town so they're paying for Michelle to stay open.
Cecil finally returns and signs us off.
Weather: "A Pale Sun Rises Over New York" by Scrawnyman
Deb, drunk, gives us an ad for the DMV which reads like a relationship bit.
There's a cake at the party with thick black frosting and undulating tendrils and an effigy of the Burger Barn/Gladtown records store with pins sticking out of it.
Stay tuned next for the clack-clack-clack of CD cases being browsed, like a fluttery little heartbeat in the darkness. Goodnight, Night Vale. Goodnight.

WTNV quick rundown - 115 - Council Member Flynn, Part 2
View the rest of the rundowns here!
Paint a picture. It'll last longer. Welcome to Night Vale.
Tamika's new 8pm curfew does seem to have stopped the robberies and there have been no more murders but it's causing an infrastructure problem due to everything being empty and unused after that time. When two fellow book-lovers (Lisa and Marsha Robinson) are attacked by a Librarian (called Dan McDowell) due to nobody being there to maintain the cages or feed the librarians, Tamika revises the cufew to 6pm insisting that this will work despite Dana's protests.
Tamika is also turning 17 soon and bought a 'Pomeranian' called Lucky from the 'NV animal shelter and discount tire shop'. Cecil describes Lucky as a light brown dust bunny with hollow yellow eyes and a shreiking little laugh of a bark. She's been taking Lucky around as she personally assures all business owners that they are safe.
The police still have no suspects about the deaths of Tristan and Camila Cortez nor a cause of death.
Weather: "TMI" by Josey
Tamika's father, D'Angelo Flynn, is constantly talking about a robot uprising.
Janice's basketball team lost their pre-season game despite Janice scoring a record number of assists and she's pretty upset about it.
Michelle Nyugen says she was also robbed but doesn't really care as music is dead. Her current preferred currency is #4 bank-run gravel.
Megan Wallaby, despite being born 4 years ago, is now 17 and will graduate high school with honours soon. She enjoys athletics and biology classes and hopes to run her own clinic one day, wanting also to go to uni and major in physical therapy. She used to be on Janice's basketball team but has decided to quit and join Tamika's patrol force. This is mostly because she needs to raise money to fund any possible higher education.
Cecil mentions that for entertainment at home after curfew he has an Xbox, a VR helmet, 'some vegetation that's totally legal' and Susan Willman's HBO GO password which Steve cribbed for him.
Stay tuned next for the sound of two men cuddled up in bed watching the new season of Insecure. And Good night, Night Vale. Good night.
Proverb: Pull this lever. Don't worry, you will never know the result. There will be a result.

The thing that amused me about the 'do you like Kevin and Desert Bluffs' poll is that a lot of those who voted no did so purely because 'Kevin did bad things'. Like, yes? It was a major driving point of the show, still one of the more interesting arcs, but we know he's not actually evil and that he was changed by Strex and there's so much to his story despite how little we hear of it? How is that not fascinating to you? How do you not 'love to hate' him, at least, instead of just hating him?
Now, I'm not saying people aren't allowed to dislike Kevin/Desert Bluffs. I don't need people to like me, the things I like, the people I like, or the characters I like, but it's so funny in an interesting way to be reminded that some people really do just look at a villanous character of any kind of go 'yes, I am going to absolutely hate you for hurting {good guy} forever!' and it doesn't matter to them if the character is a sympathetic villain, or was being forced to do bad things, or even had a redemption arc. They just, hate that character, like actually hate them forever (and sometimes can't even handle that people like that character in any way*). There's only a handful of characters I don't like (and certainly don't 'hate') and it's entirely down to them just having personalities I don't like (Michelle Nyugen, baby, you're such a wildcard but you get under my skin) or just weren't written very well (in my opinion) like Sabina/the 'Niecelet' and the guy from the eGemony episodes. These are the only reasons I'd ever allow myself to write off a character as not 'neutrally liked'. I don't know, maybe I'm just kind of a weird person? I can't ever say I've hated a WTNV and even wished harm onto them or wished for them not to exist (well, not wished hard at least) because they're all so vibrant and have a niche they fit into, and the villanous characters are written so well and make everything so exciting! I mean, technically the FOW and Hiram are also villains and I couldn't imagine NV without them or hate them. I guess just the concept of 'villain = hate' is so foreign to me because I've always enjoyed a well written villain that I looked at these reasons and just went 'huh!' as if I didn't know how strict other peoples morals are. I guess that's on me lol {for legal reasons this post is light-hearted and slightly whimsical and almost flippant in tone and OP acknowledges the rights others have to disagree with his opinions} *Reminder that liking a villanous character is not the same as condoning their actions!

Writetober/jotober 2024 - day 4
Hiya! I’ll be drabbling a short bit of WTNV fanfic based on the Inktober prompts but turning them into writetober/jotober things instead! Block #writetober and #jotober if you don’t wanna see them!
Personal rules:
No less than 500 words featuring the prompt word or eluding to it. No more than 1000 words. Just write what comes to me and don’t go back and edit. Day 4: Exotic Character focus: Maureen (former intern)
Maureen licked her lips. The metallic taste of blood spread itself across her taste buds. Her lips were chapped from being outside in the brutal desert night. She had wandered far. Past Larry Leroy's and into the desert itself. There weren't any particular thoughts going through her mind at that moment, just the need to walk. To get her body from Here to Somewhere Else.
A light wind whispered through the desert shrubbery. Maureen walked not because she was depressed or anxious (for once) but because there was too much adrenaline running through her body. At the top of a sand dune she sat, cross-legged, and looked up at the vile moon. She sucked in a deep breath and yelled out for joy.
The sound was haunting and unfamiliar to her. She hadn't had a lot to be happy about in life. The failed internship had just been one nail in the coffin of her terrible life. No, she didn't blame Cecil for everyone but he certainly hadn't helped by refusing to sign off on her internship and earn her those lousy 4 credits.
Finally someone was prying off the lid of her coffin though. It hadn't been Chad, who had promised her something better but ultimately just dug her a deeper hole for that coffin.
No, her surprise helper had been someone who seemed to hate people, someone she'd always thought was too cool to approach. Maureen did not consider Michelle Nyugen to be her savior. To say that one person alone was responsible for turning your life around put way too much pressure on them and took away your own personal responsibility for guiding your own life. Or maybe it was all fate. What did she know?
Michelle Nyugen. Michelle with her dyed hair styled to fool face-recognition technology. Michelle with her clothes too forward in fashion trends to even have a name for the style yet. Michelle whose eyes softened, just a little, when they met Maureen's own. They hadn't fallen in love at first sight that's not what this was. It was something though.
Slowly they had become wound around each other beyond the need for labels. Nobody but they could understand. Girlfriends was fine though. It was nice to have a girlfriend.
Tonight they had kissed for the first time. Maureen had been worried because of her chapped lips but Michelle hadn't minded. Michelle liked things unorthodox. It had been a raw and awkward and wonderful. Maureen had never kissed a girl before. She didn't care whether Michelle had or not. In that moment they had each other. Then they had parted, casually, a goodbye with no awkward extra sentiment, as though people kissed with such passion for no reason.
Then Michelle had gone home and Maureen had tried to go home. She had stood outside of her own door and realised that she could not sit down right now. She had to walk. So she had walked and she had come here and done the very not cool thing of yelling in joy and rolling around in the sand (just a little). Only the moon knew her secret though and that was okay because it stubbornly refused to communicate any of it's secrets. Maybe she would stay here and think about Michelle just a little longer.

I saw your post about it being ok to have a white Cecil and I agree but you've gotta admit that the fandom does have a racism problem and that's part of it
Oh sure, a ton of fandoms do! It’s kind of how things are in fandoms almost dominated, or perceiving themselves to be dominated, by white folks such as myself who have grown up seeing white folk as the default kind of person. It’s especially worrying because it even happens in fandoms where a lot of the characters are canonically and openly and visually shown as being POC. Unfortunately.
But…that’s why it’s so good and so healthy that the WTNV fandom is branching out for Cecil (and Kevin as his double) now! White Cecil has become a choice, not the default and it's ok to make that choice!
Things like this are always better when understood to be just one choice out of many and that choice still being popular doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a racism issue (unless the person with the hc is actively racist about it) though it’s certainly wise to keep an eye on it and how fandom treats 'less popular' designs.
I think the bigger racism issue this fandom has is white-washing existing canon characters of colour just because they don’t have a ‘POC name’ even though it states in their canon that they are not white (Darryl from It Devours! is Latino, Diane Crayton is mixed race, Old Woman Josie is Latina) and calling that ‘artistic license’.
And sometimes misrepresenting and even white washing characters that are generally understood to be characters of colour (Carlos, Michelle Nyugen, Nilanjana Sikdar, Basimah Bashara etc) often again stating they can just Because Art.
Also, in a related note, people just not having POC headcanons for characters outside of those commonly accepted as characters of colour, is strange to me but I don’t know if I have the credentials to unpack how exactly that could possibly be an indicator of subconscious racism through our upbringing.
But yes yes, I am aware. Oh and just so we’ll clear the air on this, my Cecil and Kevin are Shephardi Jewish with albinism, not Caucasian, before I get accused again of just defending my ‘boring white hc’.
