A Quiet Day – of Inspiration and Favourite Songs
It’s a quiet day. My house is clean, or relatively so. My ‘Samarkand’ essential oils spread ambrosial hints of cypress, rose, and orange. It stirs sweet memories of my time in India while I listen to old Broadway tunes that are smooth and melodic and utterly romantic.
I’m in my writing room, drinking ginger tea from my favourite white porcelain cup.
I’ve been here for at least two hours now, not writing. I’m musing, reminiscing, and realizing that I see beauty in so many different things. I like that about myself because it makes quiet days like this, rich, as I settle in and enjoy my humble home of big windows, vintage Knoll chairs, Murano odds and ends, and priceless art by unknown artists.
I’m writing now and I’m listening to I’ll String Along With You, by Diana Krall. I love that song!
Inspiration is on my mind. This week I’ve been posing the question, ‘What inspires you?’, to several candidates seeking a position at our design firm. I feel that it’s THE question to ask a creative. Inspiration is the making of the ‘Maker’. Those things, places, and experiences that shift the perspectives, shape the person, and stir the ideas through emotion.
We can’t really be an artist without it, can we?
I received some great answers. Nature was the overarching one, with lucid descriptions of ocean sprays and flower seeds. After all, nature is the muse of the masters, inspiring the Parthenon’s façade, Le Corbusier’s Modulor system, and Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man. It holds the Golden Ratio and the secrets of harmony, proportion, and true beauty.
The answers were animated with lit faces because inspiration comes from the happy moments or from the special times that are truly transformative. A sweet scent, a melody, a church bell, or a touch of ocean mist can bring it all back and continue to work its magic on the creative mind. Endlessly. It’s part of who we are.
It’s nearing the end of my quiet day and my playlist brings wistful notes of the 80’s with ‘Forever Young’ by Alphaville. I love that song too!
I love many things with a few exceptions, like 80’s hair, for example.
I see beauty everywhere and I’m happy that I have an open heart to the concept. It’s the making of my eclectic home and it gives me the broad perspectives to create spirited and personalized spaces for my clients around the world.
My inspirations go beyond the obvious. Sometimes it’s a shape or pattern that’s beautiful because of its sheer simplicity or its consuming complexity. My inspiration is often different and more fascinating each time I experience it. It happens every day.
I’m inspired by the Gothic Spires that meld with Art Nouveau forms and the great hyperboloids of Barcelona’s La Sagrada Familia. I’m inspired by majestic trees and their branches that disappear into the clouds; the same trees that motivated Gaudi’s soaring columns.
I’m inspired by the humble forms of life. There’s incredible beauty in the translucent caps of wild mushrooms that make their magic and fleeting appearances from the dark soil.
I’m inspired by classical architecture, music, and art. It’s part of my history, being born in Graz, Austria, a city that is steeped in old-world culture. The classical platform finds its way into every home I design.
My firm’s recent work in India has brought with it colorful new context and a deep appreciation for the master craft of an exotic world. From the intricate geometries, incised paintings, and brilliant pietre dure of the Taj Mahal to the dense layers of embroidery on fine sari cloth, my insights are forever changed. They reveal themselves in my work’s classical structuring like jewelry on a white dress; clear and vibrant.
Lazuli Sky Carpet by Regina Sturrock for Artist Series - W-Studio
My latest watercolour carpet collection for WStudio - Artist Series, too, captures this spirit. Semi-precious stones of lapiz lazuli, amethyst, and emerald, a delicate moss agate bowl, and ancient woodblock patterns are all part of the weaves that make this line exceptional.
When we see with the heart, we create with the heart.
I end my quiet day-dreaming of India with lingering scented oils and a quiet melody of ‘Summer Breeze’, by Seals & Croft. I love that song too!

From the Strategist: The Best Woks, According to Chefs and Cookware Experts
WStudio/Shutterstock
From nonstick to hand-hammered to wok-like frying pans, the best woks for upping your stir-fry game
The wok may seem like an incredibly specialized piece of cooking hardware — good for stir-fries and not much else, right? And while it is indeed very good for stir-frying, woks can be used to steam fish, boil a stew, or even make popcorn for movie night. The wok is also excellent for high temperatures, seamlessly cooking large quantities of vegetables, meat, and whatever else you like in just a matter of minutes.
With that in mind, we reached out to chefs, cooking experts, and one stir-fry guru — cookbook author Grace Young — to uncover their favorite woks for every kind of meal. “Woks come in cast iron, anodized aluminum, stainless steel, nonstick, and enamel-lined cast iron,” explains Young. “I prefer carbon steel because it impeccably sears ingredients and gives stir-fries the elusive, smoky essence prized by Chinese gourmands.” Ahead, the woks she and the other experts recommend.
The Best Wok for Professionals
Hand Hammered Carbon Steel Pow Wok
Professional chefs who cook with woks fire them up to intense, high temperatures, often over a modified burner that shoots the flames straight up rather than in a circular pattern. If you’re serious about your wok game and have the ability to modify your burner, you’ll need a round-bottomed wok. Chef Amelia Kang of MáLà Project recommends the Pow Wok, made from conductive carbon steel. “It’s suitable for quick, high-temperature stir-fried dishes,” she says. “The flavor is better, but it’s also easy to burn the dishes if you are not fast enough.”
The Best Wok for Standard Stovetops
Joyce Chen Flat-Bottom Wok
If you’re serious about woks — but not enough to modify your stovetop — what you need is a flat-bottomed wok. “The flat-bottomed wok, introduced by Joyce Chen, allowed woks to be used on any stove and made stir-fry a far more common dish in American households,” says Taylor Erkkinen, co-owner of The Brooklyn Kitchen cooking school. “I cook on an electric stove these days, so the direct contact of a flat-bottomed wok makes a ton of sense.” And like the Pow Wok, it’s carbon steel, so it’ll heat up (and cool down) incredibly quickly.
The Best Wok with Wooden Handles
Joyce Chen Carbon Steel Wok, 14-Inch
If you’re looking for a wok that you can handle with both hands without worrying about getting burned, consider the Joyce Chen carbon steel wok with birchwood handles. “The loops on metal woks get superhot, and you need pot holders to handle,” says Matt Rodbard, founder of Taste and the co-author of Koreatown: A Cookbook. With wooden handles, that’s not a problem. And it also makes it easy for him to “flip it and use it as a fast ‘lid’ for quick steaming in my stainless-steel pan.”
The Best Hand-Hammered Wok
Newquist Forge Carbon Steel Wok
Young usually prefers a 14-inch, flat-bottomed carbon-steel wok with two wooden handles. But if you’re looking for a wok that is truly special, she recommends those hand-forged by Erik Newquist. “If you want to treat yourself to a wok of art,” she says, “Erik Newquist hand-hammers woks in the Pacific Northwest inspired by the Cen brothers wok, which is on the cover of my cookbook, The Breath of the Wok.”
The Best Wok Lid
Domed Wok Lid
If you want use your wok for making a stew or homemade popcorn, you’ll need a good lid. Young recommends the domed lids (which diverts most condensation away from your food) available at San Francisco’s Wok Shop, the go-to place for, you guessed it, wok shopping. “[Owner] Tane Chan is the most knowledgeable person selling woks in the world,” Young says. “Throughout the pandemic, she has gone into her store seven days a week and hasn’t stopped shipping woks and wok accessories.”
The Best Woklike Frying Pan
Made In Carbon Steel Frying Pan, 10”
If you simply don’t have the space for a wok, then you’ll want a very good frying pan at the very least. Lucas Sin of Junzi Kitchen stands by Made In’s carbon-steel frying pan. “To achieve as high heat as I can for stir-fries, I prefer flat bottoms for as much surface contact as possible,” he says. “High walls mean that the same pan can be used for braising, steaming, boiling. And carbon steel is the preferred material, as that’s what woks are made of. At home, I prefer the dexterity of the 10-inch carbon-steel pan, which comfortably cooks for two.”
