He'd moved to metropolis on a whim.
The city was big, he's earning good money via commissioned things (most people come to him for cosplay actually, who knew that knowing how to build a sci-fi gun that doesn't even work would be this wanted??) and he's got a nice apartment!
Superman and Supergirl were the active heroes, he didn't need to involve himself anymore with the world of heroes, he would continue as a civilian. It was better this way.
So how come LexLuthor, of all people, what is his luck?, sends him an invitation to LexCorp AND once declined, seemed to have created some sort of energy absorbing weapon that directly zoomed in on his immediate whenever around?
Civilian life is one thing.
Being rescued via Super for the 9th time is another.
"Hey Danny." Supergirl grins, they're floating to the side as Superman deals with Lex.
"Hey, Supergirl." Danny replies with a sigh, holding his bag.

I firmly believe that Clark could have pulled Lex back from total “darkness” if they hadn’t stuck to the “Luthor’s are evil narrative” (see: when Clark found out that Tess was Lionel’s daughter. And Tess is one of my favorite characters, but my friend, my guy, you couldn’t have seen that Lionel brought out Lex’s darkness after years of friendship?? But you saw it with Tess who you didn’t know nearly as long?).
At the Season 7 finale, Arctic, Lex said that Clark turned his back on Lex, and you know what? He was right. But I think if they had followed Clark’s character, that Clark would have actually tried to save Lex. In the Smallville canon, they veered into morally gray characters—Jonathan Kent himself said that Clark would have to venture into the gray area because things in the real world aren’t black and white. He gave grace when Lana stole 10 million (?) from Lex before their divorce, when Chloe has done a bunch of hacking, and even, technically, Clark himself has done breaking & entering (and given multiple concussions/ other injuries).
Clark saw firsthand what kind of man Lionel was—he killed his parents, he electrocuted his son to cover his crimes. In Lex’s memories, he saw Lionel get physically abusive with Lex and Lillian. And yet, despite being captured and kept in a cage by Lionel in the name of protection, Clark was still outraged that Lex killed Lionel. He had the nerve to say that Lex didn’t try hard enough to be a good son (when Clark saw the years of Lex fighting against his father).
No, no, no. Clark would’ve actually tried to save Lex. Especially after the whole “what’s lost can be found again” (which amounted to nothing) and everyone and their mom saying that Clark’s greatest weakness was seeing the good in people. And I think with all the nuance of black and white that Clark has had to face, he would’ve “forgave” Lex for killing Lionel. (I quote “forgave” because it wasn’t really something against Clark.)
I also firmly believe that Lex killing Lionel was somehow how Lionel wanted it to end. Even if he died “protecting” Clark’s secret, I don’t think it was purely for Clark’s interests so much as one last power play against Lex.

Alexei Wilder didn't used to hate parties. He wasn't much of an extrovert, and the majority of the events he'd attended had been in pursuit of a target, but even so, parties had a certain charm. There was something about being surrounded by people, united for the common purpose of celebration, and happily distracted enough to not pay him any mind.
There lay the root of his issue with Uriah's parties. Here, he was the distraction.
It wasn't too bad at first. Fox dressed Lex in suit pants and a black silk shirt and kept him at his side as he made the rounds, greeting guests. At dinner, he knelt on the floor beside the CEO's chair, a debasing position that Lex was actually grateful for. Here, the eyes weren't lingering on him. Here, they wouldn't touch him, at least for a little while. Uriah had even been gracious enough to let Lex keep his cybernetics for the party, though the threat of having them taken away for good if he tried anything was still being held over his head.
But that wasn't bad. If anything, that was normal. Until—
"You're a terrible host, Fox." A meticulously groomed brunette across the table was leaning past his cocktails and hoeur d'oeuvres, addressing Uriah though his eyes were heavy on Lex. Before the Tower, Lex would've stared back, pouring threats into his gaze until the other man backed down. Now, it felt safer to drop his head and hope he lost interest.
"Oh?" came Fox's response.
"You haven't let anyone play with your new toy."
(Ploy, alloy, coy.) Pretentious dickhead. Alexei had learned pretty quickly that the city's wealthy had a glitzy, roundabout way of speaking, especially to each other. It made him want to puke.
But under the thick layer of disgust, there was still the fear of this guest's—all the guests'—intentions, as well as the hope that Uriah would prove to be his usual controlling self and shut the request down. Instead—
"Of course. Where are my manners?"
(Planners, banners.) Lex's stomach dropped. He'd beg Uriah to take it back if it would change anything, but that would only show weakness—fear—to the guests.
Under the table, he saw the brunette man's hand move, tapping his knee.
"Here, boy."
Are you fucking kidding me?
He didn't say it. Somehow, he didn't say it. That would only give them something to punish, only make things that much worse.
One stern look from Uriah, and Lex was crawling under the table to a chorus of amused laughter. He prayed that at the very least, none of them knew who he was, who he used to be, but Uriah wasn't the type to hold his tongue when there was bragging to be done.
He tried to retreat from his body, placating his mind with fantasies of setting the tablecloth on fire and beating the shit out of the man who was now sitting above him, tracing his cheekbone with a finger, hunger in his gaze.
This new enemy tilted his chin up and pressed a glass to his lips. When Lex caught the sharp smell of alcohol inside, he drank without protest, grateful that he could at least be moderately numb to the humiliation.
But the man didn't stop, and drink after drink was poured down Lex's throat until the room was spinning and he was no longer sure if this was a kindness or a curse.

when they raise the landing gear (will your heart stay here?)
“Hey,” Eddie says, brightening up. “Wanna get out of here?” Steve frowns, peers over the edge. “We’re stuck on a ferris wheel,” he points out. Eddie claps his hands together. “What, you scared–uh… what’s your name?” “Steve.” “Steve,” Eddie says, rolling it over his tongue like it’s candy. “You scared, Stevie?” Steve feels the nickname burn down his spine and coil somewhere lower than that. He’s not sure why that’s what does it, but he shakes his head. He used to be the type of person to jump into things headfirst. He wants to be that person again. “Not at all,” he lies, and wipes his suddenly sweaty palms on his slacks.
mature, 10k. the ww2 era notebook au that absolutely nobody asked for but I wrote anyways.
for @thefreakandthehair 's Spicy Six Spring Fanworks Challenge, and the prompt "C'mon, it's raining!". thank you as always Lex for the wonderful inspiration! I took this prompt and, as always, smashed it into a romcom that's actually very angsty and completely ran away with it. enjoy!

Concept: for a charity drive, Superboy decides to auction off a day spent hanging out with him, flaunting the flight and previous dating experience. He absolutely does not take into account that Lex has more than enough money to bid on the day with him, and since it's not organised by the JLA, he has no good reason for why he doesn't want a Very Respected And Rich Billionaire to be donating to the charity drive - so he asks Bart, Cassie, and Tim to help him figure something out. Potentially if before an identity reveal Bart and Cassie get to be throwing out as many crazy ideas as they can think of, while Tim is just there like: okay (this is an easy fix) (I will just bid on him. Problem solved). And just kinda....forgets? That it'll be a bit Weird? Because he'll know Kon but Kon won't know him? And that Kon will also play up his normal brashness and try and act all Superboy, instead of Kon-el, Robin's friend.
OR if after an identity reveal: you can have Tim being like: okay. I can do this. I'll be SOOOO normal about Kon having advertised this as a date/cool hang out time/DATE WITH SUPERBOY. Kon asking him for direct help and Tim caves because what's he supposed to do? Let his best friend awkwardly have to hang out with Lex?
And then Kon playing up the flirtiness and teasing because he knows Tim can't respond/this is how he "probably" would act around a civvy who'd wanted to hang out with him on a "date". :3c

loneliness and possibilities
characters: sammy and a mention of rebecca
autor's note: basically, this is something i wrote to give a little glimpse of how is the relationship between my mc and rebecca. sam is seventeen here.
disclaimer: drug mention
With a tired sigh, the teen opened the door, the darkness and silence of the house welcoming her. There was no one at home, something that became common in River's house since she was fifteen, when she insisted to her mother that she didn’t a nanny. I’m old enough to take care of  myself. She turned the lights on, took her boots off and went straight to the couch, throwing herself there. She closed her eyes, breathing deeply. She was failing school, a teacher caught her smoking weed and she got a black eye for getting into a fight. All of this in just one week.
A hell of a week.
And what she heard from her mother before she left again was: “don’t be a disappointment.”
She rolled her eyes, getting up from the couch to cook something in the kitchen. Was I ever not? She thought quietly, trying to ignore all the mix of feelings with the replay of this “conversation” in her mind. Rebecca never showed she felt pride of her being her child, so what difference would it make? She wasn’t even there. Never was.
I don’t need her.
She ate her food quietly on the dinner’s table. Ignoring the way her chest stings. But why does it hurt?
Sam often asked herself how things would be if her dad was alive. Would he be disappointed in her? Would Rebecca stay at home? Would they be a happy family?
A tear threatened to fall, and she wiped it quickly when it rolls down her cheek.
I’m sorry for everything, dad. I’m sorry for not being a good daughter to you two.
I’m sorry that I can’t make her love me.
And all her tentatives of holding back the tears failed as she thought about all these possibilities, about how she would never experience having a family because of that day. She wanted to be angry at her father for going, for leaving them, but the only thing she could think at the moment was how much she wanted him to be alive.
I hope I can make you proud one day, dad.

Not sure if it's okay to send you this ask but I actually feel the same way you do about the end of vol 3 and I've been feeling pretty alone about it. I haven't said much because I don't want to seem like I'm being mean about the movie. I think my issue is the team hasn't spent years and years together. Most of them were snapped for 5 years. When they came back Gamora was dead and then Peter was clearly left suffering and dealing with the trauma for a while. I can live with the idea of "we've all grown to need time apart and want to do our own things" but I don't think the build up and execution was there. Not just for those on the team but also 2014 Gamora who was literally just coming back to the story and finally getting to see who these people were and what her life was once about. Then it's over and it doesn't feel like enough of a resolution. I also don't love how Gamora was treated which is a whole other topic but I disliked how it seems like there hasn't been any issue with her death for anyone but Peter. There doesn't even seem to be any memories of her lingering with the team. I have so many thoughts around this that I'll be thinking about it for a while but man, she was murdered by her abuser and most of her family are victims of abuse and I dont think the aftermath has been handled very well at all. Mostly I think there needed to be another movie In between Endgame and vol 3 to hash out what happened in Infinity War/Endgame and to progress some of the characters more and build up to the more Rocket focused ending where they all part ways. Or vol 3 needed to not be quite as focused on Rocket. Not saying he shouldn't have the most focus, just scale it back a little because other things desperately needed attention.
Oh it's absolutely fine to send an ask about this!!! I'm always up for a discussion, and honestly, it makes me feel better that I'm not the only person not completely happy with the ending, solidarity my friend.
I want to preface this all with I DON'T hate the film, and I thought it was way better on a 2nd viewing, but I really don't think it's a crime to criticize it because nothing is perfect (Vol. 1 + 2 aren't either) But Vol. 3 really has some deeply ingrained issues that should've been dealt with, or at the very least acknowledged, because as it is they really stand out, especially on a second viewing or if you've marathoned all the films together, and they literally drag the film down.
Gunn said on Twitter in response to something that he wanted Vol. 3 to be able to stand on its own without the viewer needing to have seen the other films (and by extension IW+EG) but that is so unhinged when it's literally titled as the third in the series at this point lol. Like it's extremely weird to have let IW+EG affect the Guardians as much as they did and then not even try and deal with the aftermath of it all in the last film featuring (almost) everyone together... ???
He's made it clear Rocket is his favorite and that he only came back to do Vol. 3 because he wanted to finish his story, I don't doubt that's true even if I think having a single character be more important than the others is the wrong choice and leaves the whole story as a trilogy a bit lopsided. But even so, if that's the case then it's crazy to not even have Rocket's thoughts on all of these things that've happened in the last decade as if it wouldn't be traumatic to lose your loved ones for years, and how hard it would be to readjust to life after it all. I kind of can't see him letting everyone leave so easily at the very end, especially after he almost died, so I'm just left feeling confused at the choice at best and vaguely unsatisfied at worst.
Maybe Gunn didn't have as much control over their appearances in IW+EG as he says he did. Maybe they really did completely derail the road to Vol. 3 and he just won't admit it, but the film as it is doesn't help in any way by pretending nothing there happened at all. I don't see any logical reason for the audience to just go along with "For some reason Gamora left, she might've died but also maybe not, who knows. Peter is sad and the rest of the team want to move onto something else. " and then the only hint at that last part is... Mantis telling Peter to go see his grandpa, so that leads to everyone else having a change in goals too, huh. I know it's not meant to be forever, and we're to assume everyone keeps in contact with each other, but the ending really makes it feel like no, we'll never all be together again, so bah.
And concerning Gamora, I agree with what you've said. I could write an entire book with my issues of her overall treatment in the narrative and the implications of her character from the comics getting adapted like this, but I'll spare you the speech and just say the TLDR is everything starting from IW onwards concerning her (the specific framing around her murder and then time travel bringing in 2014-Gamora, and the complete lack of acknowledgement about either version of her from the rest of the team) never should've happened. It's all such a mind-boggling choice, I can't get over how much of an afterthought Gunn made her at the very last minute.
It's funny you mention the need for another film to deal with the emotional fallout of everything post-Vol. 2, because absolutely, but they kind of had the chance??? I realize the Holiday Special isn't film length and is meant to be the calm before the storm of everything that's to come, but in a post-Vol. 3 world I can't stop thinking about how it was SUCH a missed opportunity to not have that be the sobering moment for the characters to talk about everything that happened in the years everyone was snapped. It could've even been the perfect time to plant the metaphorical plot seeds of everyone wanting to go and do their own things after what happened because they just can't make life feel the exact same as it was before, and understanding things can never be the same after something like that.
Even the last lines of the song used in the Holiday Special feels more appropriate for the Guardians as a family struggling to keep it all together (and trying to deal with the sudden loss of Gamora) than it relates to Peter and Yondu, in my opinion.
Tumblr media
I would have preferred a more out-there story in general, something to give everyone equal stakes in the plot, but I do think Vol. 3 could have stayed overall the same if any of this was addressed or even mentioned in one or two lines of dialogue somewhere. Because as it is, it really feels like we missed something important between it all, but we didn't from what we we've been shown. I don't think it would have killed Gunn to include a quick moment where someone just says to Peter "I miss her too and I get everything's been way harder lately, but you can't let it grind your life to a complete halt like this." or something!! ANYTHING!!!
And if we absolutely had to stick with the time displaced Gamora plot... When she was snooping around on the Bowie by herself i dont get why she didn't get to see some old photos or something of the team during happier times (including 2018-Gamora specifically) and realizing that they really are going so far to save Rocket because they genuinely love him, and once upon a time they loved her too. 2014-Gamora getting to see the life she very nearly COULD have had within mere hours in her own timeline (without the threat of Thanos ever taking that away, mind you) but having to come to terms with the life she's made with the Ravagers in the present day. That would've been a more appropriate arc for her, I think, then her presence in the story wouldn't have had to only center around what Peter lost and nothing else and we'd at least get the idea that the others still had her on their minds even if they outwardly "moved on."
But also? Another missed opportunity to not have a moment when 2014-Gamora is in a battle with the other Ravager leaders mirroring the hallway scene with the Guardians that could have been when Peter (and the audience) "get" who she's currently more comfortable with in a basic sense, but... you know... it is what it is or whatever.
