The ghostly specter of John's hopes and dreams in SPN 1x01:
Above Baby Sam's crib, we see John's symbolic hopes and dreams. The crib mobile is filled with the baseball items John adores.
Baseball is a consistent special interest of John's, from the djinn dream where he plays softball to his #SPNwin dream of becoming a minor league catcher.
In SPNwin, he's not yet the monstrous inverse of his "dreamer" self. He's still the thing that attracted Mary to him: the soldier who hasn't lost his ability to dream. He keeps believing, even when Mary, a child-raised-soldier, feels like she can't muster up the strength to. Aside// Mary is like Dean this way, with lines like: "it only ends one way... bloody." On the other hand, John doesn't start there. It takes lying, coercion, and manipulation to get John's world to shrink, for his path[s] to narrow to hunting.
Hope is "what" John is (until, of course, he isn't):
MARY: I don't know. He's sweet, kind. Even after the war, after everything, he still believes in happily ever after, you know? Supernatural, 4x13 In the Beginning
// Until Mary died, it seems his dreams were difficult to extinguish. His primary mode of being was hopefulness:
Note: As Mary and John discuss their dreams, we see behind Mary some Jack Kline types of motifs, "The Future," crowing roosters, sunflowers, and a rainbow.
JOHN: See, I, I wanted to be a catcher for the Kansas City Athletics. MARY (fatalistic) : My parents never let me dream like that. Being a kid who killed monsters was my only option.
JOHN (wistful): You know, when I was a kid, I, uhm... I made this list of all of these places I was gonna go to look for my dad. Kept it for years, crossing off destinations, adding more. Enough time goes by... all you see is a list, you know? MARY (angry): Are you saying I should stop looking for my dad? JOHN: I'm saying that once you find him and leave hunting for good, you're gonna need a new list. The Winchesters, 1x03 You're Lost, Little Girl
We're familiar with the Winchester gun, but in the 20s Winchester (yes, the same gun brand: Winchester Rifles and Firearms Co) made a short run of baseball gear, known specifically for its top-of-the-line catcher's gear. It was outlasted by brands by Rawlings, Wilson, and Spalding.
Vintage Winchester catcher gear goes for ~$700 on eBay.
//
Here, John, the ever-hopeful soldier who holds onto his dreams will lose those dreams. The dreams will go up in smoke, and he emerges from the flames like a demon possessed.
In the words of Lady Toni Bevell (12x21): "A mad slowly going mad, searching for revenge."

I won't comment on specifics but definitely recommend listen to the entire Defense of Fandom interview with The Winchesters writer/co-executive producer Gabriel Alejandro Garza. This was a rich, enjoyable writer chat with insights into the TV industry, the making of The Winchesters, and process.
#the winchesters#listen to the podcast ignore that habitual wankbaiting account and senseless ensuing manufactured fandom drama noise on spn stan twitter

More on this incident from WGA Strike Captain Gabriel Alejandro Garza (The Winchesters), who was "the other writer standing next to Brian when this happened":
I was talking with Brian while standing on the public sidewalk, wearing a reflective orange safety vest in broad daylight. Brian and I weren't impeding traffic. We weren't even standing on the public driveway that is the entrance to this production's basecamp. Instead, we were standing off to the side on the sidewalk area. Which is why I felt safe to have my back turned to the street and oncoming traffic. While my back was turned, another writer yelled, "look out!" as Brian suddenly pulled me away with him. Immediately, I heard a vehicle skidding as it sped into the driveway, and turned to see an SUV coming to a stop — angled directly at me and Brian instead of angled to enter the parking lot. I made eye contact with the driver, Mr. Ian Woolf, who looked directly back at me as he hit the accelerator one more time, followed by the brakes, and skid even closer to us. Again, Mr. Ian Woolf did not turn to enter the parking lot during this second move. He was looking directly at us the entire time and kept his vehicle pointed at us. In fact, if Mr. Ian Woolf had gone past us, he might have run into the tree behind me and Brian or the parking lot's fence. There was no reason to be pointed in that direction, other than to deliberately aim his SUV at the two of us. Mr Ian Woolf then proceeded to park, and approach us, demanding to see our WGA cards. At first, his response was, "I didn't see you guys." However, he eventually admitted loudly, "I was trying to scare you!" He admitted this twice. We were in public view, and as such, had the right to record this interaction. We have a recording of Mr. Ian Woolf identifying himself, and admitting he was trying to "scare us." Again, he admitted this twice. I've seen trained stunt drivers miss their marks. The difference between coming close to hitting someone, and actually hitting them, is razor thin. And Mr. Ian Woolf is not likely to be qualified to judge or execute such a risky maneuver in a fast-moving large vehicle, without risking our lives. His maneuver could've killed us. Plain and simple. And aside from his actions, I personally don't believe the spirit of his conduct should represent the morals and ethics we teach the next generation of storytellers. Peaceful protest is one of the greatest freedoms we have as Americans. Some of the time, it upsets people. All of the time, it is supposed to upset certain people. But so long as it remains peaceful, it never gives another person the right to endanger lives. Brian and I won't stop walking the picket lines. Don't ever let the bullies of the world make you afraid to take a stand.
“Tried to scare you”: Producer “almost killed” picketing writers with SUV
Today in Atlanta, producer Ian Woolf (BMF) allegedly tried to run over protesting writers with his SUV, as reported on Twitter by striking writer Brian Egeston (The Game, On a Wing and a Prayer), one of those nearly hit by the vehicle.
The full text of Brian Egeston's open letter to Woolf:
AN OPEN LETTER TO THE MAN WHO ALMOST KILLED ME ON THE WGA PICKET LINE TODAY. A thread… Dear Mr. Ian Woolf, Welcome to Atlanta. Years ago, forward thinkers and Civil Rights icons labeled our fair town, ‘the city too busy to hate’. What you did today on Hank Aaron Drive and blocks from the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr….was hateful. When you pointed your SUV at me as though it were a weapon and slammed the breaks within six feet of writers, I felt the hate and aggression of scenarios similar to Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd and others who have been harmed at the hands of hate-filled oppressors. As I marched with the WGA in a peaceful protest, similar to the giants who have walked the very streets where you almost committed manslaughter, you chose to—in your own words— “Tried to scare you.” Mr. Woolf, this scare and intimidation tactic reeks of German Shepards, water hoses, bricks and burning flesh. It reeks of the worst kind of hate. A hate that continually divides us as a people. I would implore you, in hindsight, to consider the ramifications of killing an African-American man in the streets of the city too busy to hate, while being the producer of an African-American TV show, created by an African American man, run by an African-American Man. Mr. Woolf, your actions purveyed a deep generational hate for us. And that, sir, is a travesty for which you must be held accountable. If not by your superiors and peers, then by the people of Atlanta because the South will have something to say about what you did today. Should you choose to remain in our city, where I will remind you that you are a guest, I beg of you to lead with love and refrain from being a drum major for hate and potential manslaughter. I pray God’s grace and mercy over your life. Brian Egeston Writer
