Poet writing asks
I haven't seen a lot in the writeblr space for people who do creative writing other than prose, and so I thought I'd make a game about it! Send an ask to the person you reblog it from.
✍️ What's your favorite rhyme scheme and meter?
🔧 Is there a certain form of poetry that you use or prefer over others? (Sonnets, limericks, couplets, free verse, etc.)
📜 Share your favorite poem (by another poet)
✒️ Share your favorite poem (that you wrote)
📖 Would you make a collection of your poetry? What would be the theme?
🌱 Share a line that features nature?
✨ Share a line that features the sky/space/the heavens?
🌊 Share a line that features water/bodies of water?
💔 What's the saddest poem you know/wrote?
🌹Would you write a love poem?
👥 Who's your favorite poet?
🕸️ Make a web weaving with your favorite poems, songs, and art
🎉 Do you write poetry to celebrate big events?
🎹 Do you pay attention to lyrics or take inspiration from songs?
🎙️Would you put your poems to music as lyrics?
🎨 Would you draw a piece to accompany a poem or write a poem about a piece of artwork?
💡Where do you find your inspiration?
💬 What are some of your favorite words and why?
🎭 Would you ever perform your own poetry at a live reading event?
🖥️ How do you write poetry: journal, desktop, notes on your phone, voice memos?
🏠 Do you have a particular place you go to write poetry or feel inspired?
💭 Do you have any poetry memorized?

To Brother -
I lay my head down, surrounded by tears heavier than the sky's You lay stiff in a wooden box, with a crow overhead. Everyday, together, there was a new surprise We were the best of rivals, even though most thought we were allies. Most beasts display their teeth as a threat, You displayed them to show your arrogance. But brother please, don't sweat My smile is but the final act of our duet. Frankly, I'm tired of this bleak weather I will leave you now to process this final defeat. Our demons played well together But mine, played better.

How to Use Tags Effectively in the Writeblr Community
[This is an expanded version of the “Using tags effectively” section on my How to gain attention in the Writeblr Community guide here. Please check that out as well!]
This is a question I get often, and it’s really difficult to figure out how this works on your own, so here’s a handy little guide!
So in order to figure out how to use tags, we have to know how tagging works on Tumblr.
How tags work on Tumblr
Only the first five tags will show up in tracked tags. (i.e., if you tag your post #writeblr, and I’m following the tag #writeblr, it might pop up on my dashboard even if I’m not following you.)
Only the first twenty tags will show up in tumblr search.
Reblogs will not show up in tracked tags or search.
Hyphens (-) won’t show up in tracked tags.
That’s a lot to remember, are you still with me? The most important thing to remember about tagging your work is that the first five tags are the most important. You want to use your biggest, most relevant tags in the first five.
What tags you should use
So you know that the first five are most important, but what tags should you use? What tags are the best?
Here’s what I usually use and though I don’t know if they’re particularly popular or not, but they’ve worked for me just fine.
Tags to use for any writing-related post
#Writeblr and #writing for any writing-related post that you make. These two are the most important tags. I also sometimes include #writblr because some people use that tag instead.
If you have spare room in your first five tags, because you don’t have anything else to tag it with, try using #writers of tumblr, #writeblr community and #writers to maximize your tagging potential. These should only be used in your first five if you have extra space!
Tags to use for your original writing
#creative writing, #amwriting, #original writing, are a fantastic place to start.
Remember to tag your genre as well, like #fantasy, #science fiction, #urban fantasy, #young adult, #YA, depending on what you write for.
Tagging your writing type can also be effective, such as #drabble, #flash fiction, #excerpt, etc., if they are relevant.
Tags like #angst, and #fluff are also really popular, so if either of those apply to your writing, try including that!
If you have some additional space, #WIP, #WIPs, #OC, #OCs also will work, depending on what you’re posting about.
Tags to use for writing advice
#writing advice, #writing help, #writing tips are the most commonly used ones.
You can and probably should specify what your writing advice is about like #description, but that can wait for the tags after the first five.
Tags to use for relatable writing content and memes
#just writer things, #writing memes, #writing meme are the biggest ones in Writeblr, I believe.
#writing problems also work depending on what your post is.
Other tags not specific to the writing community like #memes, #relatable also work, for an even broader audience outside of Writeblr.
Tags to use for writing encouragement and positivity
#writing positivity, #writing encouragement are commonly used.
Other tags not specific to the writing community like #positivity and #encouragement also work, for an even broader audience outside of Writeblr.
Which tags you should use
So that’s a lot of potential tags to use, and only the first five will show up in tracked tags! How in the world are you going to prioritize?
Figure out what type of post you’re making, and don’t get greedy! If it’s not a writing meme, don’t tag it as such. The best way to maximize your tag usage is to use a combination of various tags that are the most relevant to your post. Try mixing and matching and experimenting!
What to do after the first five tags
The first twenty tags will show up in search, and also the organization of your personal blog tags. For example, I use #Undine writes stuff to organize all of my original writing on my blog — chances are, people aren’t following that tag, but it’s important to my writeblr. Your next priority should be your organizational tags for your own blog.
You can also include some tags that you couldn’t fit in the first five! Again, the first twenty will show up in search so if you think someone might search a particular tag, it’s a good idea to include it as well.
And finally, any comments that you want to leave in the tag should be after you get all of your important tags out of the way!
Your personal writeblr tag
So a lot of writeblrs like to use their own url as tags whenever they make an original post, so people can find it easily.
However, if you’re like me and your url has hyphens in it, it will not show up anywhere! So instead of #pens-swords-stuff, I use #pens swords stuff.
This also goes for all of your people tagging other writeblrs in your hashtags — if they have a hyphen in their url, try writing it out without the hyphens so it’ll show up!
Don’t bother trying to use popular tags for reblogs
Your tags won’t show up in any tracked tags or searches if it’s not an original post! When you reblog someone else’s posts, you can forget the first 5 tag rule, and just jump straight into your organizational tags and your tag comments.

caught up in a summer shower
Tumblr media
cw: this vignette features an ever-so-slightly explicit sexual encounter between two consenting adults, aged 26 and 33. by normal human adult standards, it is laughably tame, but because it is different than most of the sexually charged material on this blog, all of that stuff is under a cut.
Emma sits on her bed, watching the hot July rain outside her window. Anything to keep from feeling. Unfortunately, it seems impossible to erase all feelings when it comes to Paul. It’s like she doesn’t even think about him anymore. Just feels about him. Especially after this morning. This morning, which she hopes she won’t come to regret.
They woke up in bed together, and Paul was–as always–too stressed about his work. The department let him pick up a summer section of Introduction to Film Studies, a rare thing for a doctoral student, and his students are … apathetic. Last week, they watched Yojimbo, and half the kids had the nerve to call it boring. He’s been distressed ever since.
“I’m not boring,” Paul said. “They’re boring.”
“They aren’t calling you boring,” Emma said. “They’re calling Kurosawa boring.”
“You think they know the difference? Paul picks the movies. Paul picks Kurosawa. Kids think Kurosawa is boring. Ergo, Paul is boring. It’s Introduction to Philosophy.”
“Which they’re also not paying attention in.”
Paul sighed.
“I just don’t want them to look at me like I’m Death,” he said. “The Ingmar Bergman version.”
“They could never think of you that way. Ingmar Bergman is boring.”
Paul rolled his eyes.
“You’re hilarious,” he said. “Is that why I keep you around?”
“Well, that, and I swallow.”
He laughed, climbed back onto the bed, and kissed her.
“You’re terrific,” he said.
“So are you,” Emma said. “Paul?”
“Emma.”
“I love you.”
Paul froze. Backed away. Turned bright pink. And left Emma’s apartment as soon as he could find his keys.
She’s not really sure what to do with that. Did they break up? No, they couldn’t have broken up. Paul doesn’t like confrontation, but he’s not an asshole. She knew telling him she loved him, in particular, would be a risk, anyway. He’s a lovely guy, but he has no romantic experience. A few makeouts, a few hookups, but no serious romance to his name. He just never figured he had time. If he wanted to be the best he could, then he needed to work around the clock. Sometimes, Emma thinks the only reason they’re together is because they work in the same field, in the same department, at the same time. It’s easy to build a schedule around her.
And in a way, she can relate. She knows that the biggest reason boys didn’t like her in high school (and college) was because she was focused. She had a goal. Even if they wanted to flirt with her, they weren’t part of the plan. But when she liked someone … when she wanted to make out, fuck, something … she made time for it. Paul’s never been like that. Romance, sex … it’s all blurry for him. He’s focused, too.
She’s resting her head against the window, listening to “Rain on the Roof,” and her phone rings. She jumps. Paul. Should she answer? Why even ask?
“Paul?”
“Hey,” he says. “I’m outside. It’s really wet out here. Can you buzz me up?”
Emma’s heart tightens. Maybe he’s here to break up with her. Let her down easy. Love might be good enough for her, but it’s not good enough for him. It’s a distraction, and he just can’t afford that on his way to a tenure-track job. For that matter, she shouldn’t focus on love, either. Doesn’t she have the same goal? Isn’t that what brought them together? Isn’t that what they should have known would tear them apart?
She realizes she’s putting words in Paul’s mouth as she buzzes him up. Seconds later, he’s in her living room, dripping rain water on the wooden floors, eyes wide and terrified behind blue frames. His mouth is all bunched up in one corner. Is he shaking?
“Look,” she starts, but he doesn’t let her finish–not yet, and not this way.
“I’m sorry,” he says.
Emma snorts.
“Of course you are,” she says. “You know, I should have known. You play with Legos. You know who else played with Legos? My tenth-grade crush. I told him I was really into him, and he apologized. You’re all the same.”
“Emma, no, that’s … I’m sorry I freaked out. And I’m sorry I didn’t say it back.”
Emma frowns, but she’s not unwilling to hear him out.
“I’m listening.”
“Look, you know this is new for me. I know it’s less new for you, but for me … you’re the first woman I’ve ever … I never thought I could slow down before. And I guess now I know I can’t.”
The tears prick her eyes, and before long, they’re falling. But Paul rushes up to her, embraces her. He fucked up again.
“I need to get better at these speeches,” he says.
“What the fuck are you trying to say?” Emma asks.
“I’m trying to say that I always thought romance meant slowing down for someone. And maybe that would have been the case if I’d … with somebody else. But not with you. You know what this is like. And with you … I work better. I’m smarter. I’m … I’m with you, and I’m faster. I don’t know how that happened, but I’m so … happy … that it did.”
Emma tries not to grin.
“And I want to be with you,” Paul continues. “For as long as you want me. I’m here until you get tired of me.”
“What if you get tired of me first?”
“Won’t happen.”
She’s waiting. He can tell.
“I’m not … I don’t know if I can say that yet,” he says. “It’s not you. It’s … I have a hard time with saying it in general. Even to my family, and I … you know.”
“I do.”
“But can you … can you say it again?”
Emma bites her lip and slowly inches toward Paul. Maybe in another life, she would have thought he didn’t deserve this. But there’s a hot July rain outside, this man’s white undershirt has turned clear as it clings to his thick chest hair, and she thinks she might die if she doesn’t feel him inside her in the next ten minutes.
She wraps herself around him, kisses him like he’s made out of hard candy, and whispers.
“I love you.”
She kisses down his shoulders, his chest, his stomach … before she stops. She feels how desperate he is, how eager. It makes her giggle.
“There you are,” she says. “Can I let you out?”
“Not yet,” he says, voice thick and hoarse. “I want you first.”
He pulls her over to the couch, lies her on her back, and helps her out of her little shorts. He knows what to do by now. It’s like he’s speaking right into her. She runs her hands through his reddish hair and pulls him close. Maybe none of these strokes spell out I and love and you, but she knows that’s what he means.
“I love you,” she says.
“Because I’m doing exactly what you want?” he asks, head still between her thighs.
“Because I do.”
Clearly, it’s a satisfactory answer, because he’s doing it even better. When she sighs, it’s not forced, not performative, not like she’s trying to get it over with like she has with other guys. This is not another guy. This is a man she loves. This is a place where she feels safe, even here, even at her most vulnerable.
“I LOVE YOU!”
She’s panting now, and he’s laughing. There’s a lot more where that came from, all puns intended and celebrated. She kisses down his stomach again, murmuring her love into every gasp and pause. Maybe she’ll love him forever.
Fuck, she hopes she does.

Hey Published Authors! Wanna be interviewed on our blog?
that's it
there's no gimmick
its free
we run a weekly blog feature where we promote books and other art
yeah you could promote a fanfic i guess if you wanted to answer the interview questions? never come up so i haven't thought through what we'd say if someone tried
if you follow the instructions, then we'll post your interview on our blog when there's a spot, unless it violates our community standards which is possible but very very unlikely, we're pretty chill
it also autoposts on my tumblr and my mastodon though lets be real, no one actually follows me on mastodon, i don't know why i even have that account. the tumblr account is real though, i have lots of posts and stuff
anyway, we need more interviews because i got busy and forgot to ask more people to submit them and we're almost out of our scheduled posts so please either send us one or reblog this post so that other people do the thing
please

Writebr Garden's Advent Calendar Event
"Please can you make it snow just a little more? It's one of my favorite things in the whole world...when it falls like in the best Christmas movies. Do you know what movies are? Probably not, huh? Well can you make it snow gently with a ton of snowflakes?" Sam whispered to the large knotted pine beside her in such a hopeful tone that it nearly cracked my heart in two. "The wind is uncooperative today." The tree told me with lingering sadness in his creaking tone, sharing in my wish to make Sam happy even though neither of us understood what was so important about her request. I whispered to him for a time, asking his permission and with it granted I lay quiet and still to wait. After a few moments of concentration, Jen finally interrupted with a small clearing of her throat. "Whatchya doing?"
"Asking the tree for snow, Bryn says the forest folk talk too just not the same way we do." Sam answered, "Now shhhh! I'm trying to concentrate on what he's saying." I was pleased to hear she had taken my comment seriously and then immediately surprised when Jen chuckled and approached rather than shaking her head as she often did when such topics came around. "Well tree, I think you'll have to help my sister understand that the snow comes from the sky and not trees." From my perch I saw Sam open her mouth to return the playful teasing, for that's all it really was, and before she could get a word out I kicked one of the branches which sent a cascade of snow down on Jen with a freezing plop!
She gasped sharply and sweet little Sam fell into the pillowy snow laughing like she was going to burst. Jen tried to look angry but the intensity of her laughter proved too much to contain. Instead she started packing a snowball that had Sam running and the chase was on. I bounced carefully on each branch as I leapt tree to tree, a few feet ahead of them always. The snow rained down just as Sam asked and I knew right then as I saw Jen's eyes sparkle with the reflection of thousands of flakes like tiny stars in their own infinate galaxy, laughter echoing around the forest, what was so special about snow.

“The Boy of Gold & the Woman of Silver” is one of my favourite poems I’ve written and certainly one of my favourite to perform.
I wrote it a few days before my 18th birthday and I think it still holds up half a decade later.
Is it a metaphor for patriarchy and entitlement?
… maybe.
