My personal highlights - 2023 - part 7:
Songbirds. They are everywhere, mostly small and fast and I am still happy with every good picture I get.
(And yes, I know crow are songbirds as well, but they get their own post)

It was pretty cold this morning (in the high 20s/low 30s) so there was a large variety of visitors. 🥰

07/01/2024-Lakeside, Southsea, Weston Shore and home
Photos taken in this set are of; views, rose hips and wild carrot on a walk at Lakeside this morning, a dazzling Kingfisher on the walk too I'm familiar with seeing them on this date as today is my birthday and I've seen this one of my very favourite birds on my birthday five times now which is always special, yarrow, views at Southsea including looking towards the Spinnaker Tower and the sun shining through a bush, a fabulous Fox in the bright sunshine that walked around the area behind the barriers where the sea defence work which was a glorious sight and Carrion Crows in an interesting feeding frenzy to witness at Weston Shore this evening.
I was also thrilled to see the Black Redstart at Southsea Castle again after seeing it in December, my first of the year to take my year list to a pleasing 76 to end an extraordinary, packed and brilliant week off of birds, mammals, flowers, fungi and more with many fantastic places visited. I have a great personal bond with Black Redstart seeing my first on the building site for the development our house is on in 2010, it's twice been the species to (at the time) make my year list my joint highest ever, once making my year list (at the time) my highest ever and being the final species of my current highest ever year list 2023, now I can say I saw one on my birthday too. Other highlights at Lakeside were stunning views of Great Crested Grebes and Tufted Ducks, a great Redwing and Wren view, Woodpigeon, ivy, hazel catkins, pretty cuckoo-pint leaf and mistletoe. At Southsea gorgeous views of Brent Geese on the green, Herring Gull, Carrion Crow, Starling, Wren, daisy, gorse and milk or sowthistle stood out too with Herring Gull and Black-headed Gull also seen at Weston Shore. Magpie was nice to see from home today.

Rating the birds in my backyard by tendency toward violence
Tumblr media
Northern Cardinal, 4/10
I'm sometimes worried the male is sexually harassing the female but I'm pretty sure they're just doing some elaborate public pickup roleplay. The rest of us didn't agree to participate in your kink, guys.
Tumblr media
American Robin, 1/10
Literally just some dude hanging out. Never bothered anyone but worms. Big fan of the way you just stand there in the middle of the grass like you forgot what you were supposed to be doing.
Tumblr media
House Sparrow, 10/10
You're a gang. You're participating in gang violence. There's ten billion of you living in a single wood pile and it's been civil war for three years now. When will the bloodshed end?
Tumblr media
Tufted Titmouse, 1/10
A shy baby. A pretty little guy. I saw you on the neighbor's garage roof and time stopped. There were anime sparkles around you. Come back.
Tumblr media
European Starling, 9/10
Why is it always you? Listen, I know, I KNOW the sparrows are the problem, and YET. When the fighting starts, it's always you in the middle of it, provoking them and then screaming like you're an innocent bystander defending yourself. I'm onto you.
Tumblr media
Carolina Wren, 3/10
This rating is not for physical violence, which you don't engage in, but for your role as an incurable narc. A tattle tale. I know they're fighting again, okay? I see it. Our yard has been a warzone for years, you don't have to make a big announcement every time someone misbehaves.
Tumblr media
Eastern Wood-Peewee, 0/10
If this were "birds who think they're better than everyone else," you'd get 10/10.
Tumblr media
Red-bellied Woodpecker, 6/10
It's a utility pole. It's not a tree. You're surrounded by trees that are full of bugs. But there you are, on the utility pole. Committing vandalism.
Tumblr media
American Crow, unrated
For who am I to cast judgment on the actions of La Famiglia? I assume you are doing what is best for the neighborhood. If I could, though, without criticism, make a single observation. That when large numbers of you gather in the ominous dead cottonwood - no? No, you're right. None of my business.
Tumblr media
Great Crested Flycatcher, 5/10
Frankly, I think you could be doing more. I think your name implies a great potential. I think you should massacre the insects. I think your beak should drip with viscera.
Stay tuned for more criminal activity!

I saw a pileated woodpecker on my walk today and heard its call several times when I was in the back yard. so exciting i've never seen one of those at home
There are SO many birds. Yesterday watched two Tree Swallows in the back yard having their aerial courtship and a Song Sparrow sitting on the back porch singing. It seems like I hear so many more bird songs than ever before, many unfamiliar. There are loads of bluejays, cardinals, grackles, starlings, and mourning doves, and lots of birds I don't recognize.
There was a bird with a bright white belly/chest doing some kind of little dance outside this morning, and right now I'm watching yet another variety of sparrow (so many sparrows!) sitting on the edge of the porch. I heard several downy woodpecker calls too.
Could it be everything I've been planting that is causing the birdsplosion? Or the fact that we haven't mowed yet this year? The total amount of leafy and woody cover has increased only modestly (because the new trees and shrubs are still baby) but the plant biodiversity has increased dramatically.
I protected the current garden patch from clearing and instead of letting the dirt lie bare, piled leaves on top of it. The garden patch has been a favorite spot for the birds all winter long, but especially now; there's always a sparrow or cardinal there.
I've also protected the meadow from disturbance, letting the "weeds" grow up while introducing wildflowers and trying to kill or reduce the turf grass bit by bit, and the strangest thing has happened: the soil has improved very noticeably in those areas. The soil underneath the thickets of asters has become much softer and lighter, whereas in areas that are covered with overgrown turf grass, it's the same dense heavy clay as before.
And the number of earthworms is incredible. I remember a time when there was not a single earthworm anywhere in the area that is now the meadow. It was a garden patch used by the guy that lived here before, and we tilled it every year without seeing a single earthworm. Ever. Now I can hardly sink a shovel into earth there without finding 3-4 earthworms immediately???
Just a year or two ago, I would have scrambled to get my phone to take a picture if a bird landed on our porch; now not a single day goes by without 3 or 4 birds visiting, whether my adorable finch couple, or a Downy Woodpecker, or robin, or a FAT wren.
The change is so dramatic. Like that thing that happened when wolves returned to Yellowstone—a trophic cascade?
I think that somehow, all my caretaking activities have increased the insects and invertebrates, which in turn have increased the birds. There's been a great increase in butterflies, at least, and it's only early April.
CREATURES!!!

Note
hello, longtime fan here! may i ask out of all the types of birds that you're familiar with, are there any songs or calls from them which tickle your fancy?
Hi there! Great question! Honestly, I find it impossible to choose a favourite bird sound because I adore them all. From the gentle co-co-coo-ing of the wood pigeon to the intricate melodies of the song thrush, each one holds its own charm. Personally, I'm captivated by the haunting call of the black woodpecker and the majestic trumpet of the crane. The cheerful tunes of the robin and the chaffinch never fail to lift my spirits. Additionally, I love the lively song of the small wren and the delightful crackling it makes as it hops from branch to branch. Even the sounds of birds that some (city people?) might find bothersome, like gulls, magpies, fieldfares, and jackdaws, bring me absolute joy.
Ironically, what I find less appealing are the sounds of human activity and machinery. But I recall an incident when I mistook the repetitive chirping of a starling for a car alarm. It just goes to show the remarkable diversity of birds; they can even annoy me!
What about you? Do you have a favourite bird sound? And everyone else here - feel free to comment! :)

18/12/2022-American Wigeon and more at Pennington and bits at home
We came to Pennington on a wet morning/early afternoon to look for this rarity, and I’m very pleased that we saw it. Thanks to the immense help of a kind person we saw on arrival who had seen it who pinpointed for us the exact area it was at and directions from someone we know online beforehand we got some lovely views of it on the banks beside Efford Lake viewing from the path from Lower Pennington Lane car park. It was a treat to see its creamy head and exotic emerald head stripe as its head went up and down with a flock of Wigeons. It was a very special bird to see, and relocated a few times in regular take offs from the group due to the regular presence of a soaring Marsh Harrier including onto the water at one point. This is a pleasing fifth new bird of 2022 for me, my first life tick since July, taking my life list to 282 and year list to 206. An extremely pleasing figure for me it was such a big thing getting to 200 for me again this year and then getting one more year tick to make my year list my highest ever so to be a fair way into the first tenth of the 200s for my first ever time is amazing. In an illustrious list of species I’ve been lucky to see for the very first time this year it’s another well known species which has been a theme of the year and it’s another American duck.
At Pennington it was also nice to see Gadwall, Mallard, one of my favourite birds the Brent Geese with some flying over and others gathered nicely in a field, Canada Goose, get nice views of Curlew and Oystercatcher, possibly Redshank, Herring Gull, Great Black-backed Gull Blackbird well and Wren dashing into vegetation. Yellow gorse in flower as the second picture I took today in this photoset shows glowed like Christmas lights in the dreary weather, with teasel seed heads, remnants of dock I believe and cleavers looking nice hugging the low sides of the track alongside bramble bushes and trees. It was nice to take in some moody views over the water the third and fourth pictures in this photoset with Hurst Castle just visible in the distance.
At home today I saw the Blackbird out the back really well again and Starlings this morning getting the first picture in this photoset of the former. This afternoon I enjoyed four Collared Doves lined up nicely on the roof of the garages looking atmospheric in the pouring rain which I took the fifth, sixth and seventh pictures in this photoset of before they came into the garden to feed which was a great sight. Starlings joined them too and Blue Tit, House Sparrow and Goldfinch were great to see in the garden today as well. I enjoyed raindrops on the windows as the rain persisted this afternoon/towards evening with the yellow, red, green and blue of the Christmas lights on the balcony behind lighting up the raindrops such a beautiful scene I did a re-creation of a shot I took on Christmas Day last year of this these shown in the eighth and ninth pictures in this photoset. On the way out today a Song Thrush in a garden near home was nice to see as was a little New Forest pony on the way back. It was interesting yesterday evening in Southampton as we returned from a festive tradition of ours going to a brilliant pantomime at the Mayflower Theatre to see a Black-headed Gull flying about at night time. A very memorable, relaxing and fun weekend, I hope you all have a good week.
