WRATHCHILD AMERICA - CLIMBIN' THE WALLS [Rock Candy Remastered] 2016, MP3+FLAC
WRATHCHILD AMERICA‘s 1989 debut “Climbin’ The Walls” isn’t the typical kind of music ‘Remastered & Reloaded‘ by Rock Candy Records, but this long forgotten album certainly deserved a proper reissue, and a listen by all ’80s rock aficionados. Monday, December 28: Souls at Zero, “Frustration”
Most metal bands made it through the ‘90s by making tentative adjustments to their sound in order to accommodate the times, though some tried to hold the line.  But there were also a handful that reset and pretty much started from scratch: Souls At Zero presented themselves as a brand new alternative metal act, but their self-titled debut actually amounted to Wrathchild America’s third album, with all of the same members pivoting from ‘80s thrash to ‘90s grunge-ish metal.  Songs like “Frustration” bore this out: Brad Divens’ vocals, although less jokey than before, were recognizable to anyone who remembered WA’s “Surrounded by Idiots” (which, admittedly, was not a large population), while Shannon Larkin’s drumming straddled both worlds by trying to maintain a consistent plod while adding a few flourishes in the fills and bass drum here and there.  And to the extent that the members of Souls At Zero were genuinely bifurcating their career into two different approaches by changing their name and musical framework, “Frustration” worked as an early ‘90s alt-metal number.  But unfortunately for the guys, just as Wrathchild America wasn’t a unique force on the thrash scene, Souls At Zero arrived a couple years too late to stand out or make an impression, and ultimately disbanded by 1996.
