begging some of yall not to idolize deepdark and defiance how you do. i have a friend who’s actually lived through a cult’s wrath and they r mega not cool. like i know defiance is narratively AMAZING but we. shouldn’t put it on a pedestal of “oh this thing is so cool and its leaders are amazing” because ultimately it’s safer for everyone if we start recognizing that while yea defiance + deepgang are cool… theyre still a cult. and we should not be viewing them positively at all. cults are inherently models of rigorous and severe repeated abuse, and by romanticizing them you are inherently romanticizing abuse. i don’t think you’re bad for letting this happen, raz, i just think that if you have any sympathy for cult survivors you should have stopped it before now. Especially as the comic ramps up towards the inevitable climax of the cult in it doing many awful things to the main characters. I know no one here intended to romanticize it, but by treating deepdark and other leaders of this cult as silly uwu murder cult guys we are actively doing that.
thank you for listening if you did, and i hope this feedback helps us all grow.
Well, thank you for sharing your concerns, I appreciate it a lot, as well as explaining the reasons this is important to you. Nothing you said is incorrect or invalid! I do have a few other thoughts I wanna share along with this ask.
Firstly; Defiance is fictional, and more than that it's not based on any real world cult. I obviously had to do some research and take some general real-world influence, mostly because I wanted to capture the kind of personality that exists in cult leaders with Deepdark, but in the end it's a completely made-up group. I actually based their group structure much more on a mafia-like organization than a traditional religious cult. There is a sliding scale for these sorts of things in stories of course, topics that are treated with varying levels of severity based on our culture, and everyone is going to be affected by them differently based on personal experience anyways. I refer to Defiance as a "combination death cult and mafia" sort of flippantly (which is my own fault) because just calling it a "group" is sort of vague, non-descript term. But its structure and actions are way, way more dramatic and obvious than any cult that exists today, or existed previously.
With the kind of fanbase I've gathered, I would like to believe my readership is able to separate the difference between talking about real-world cults and fictional ones. No one I've seen is actually idolizing Defiance as something to genuinely be admired, outside of talking about and making up in-universe characters who do so. Deepdark is fun, and dramatic, and over-the-top, because I made him that way, so it's natural that people like him. But no one is saying that it's good to be like Deepdark, or that he's some sort of aspirational goal (I hope! If you are, we'll have words!). I do believe that in the story itself I've pretty thoroughly conveyed how cruel and malicious Defiance & its members are. In fact I've pretty intensely tried to emphasize the insidious way that cults hurt people, and the danger of charismatic leaders like Deepdark! Maybe I've failed a bit in that regard, then.
But besides all that - your points are very valuable and worth repeating, and I will be more on the lookout for anything treating Defiance's impact irreverantly, and either delete or correct it. I have a feeling people are not going to be happy with them anyways, as they continue to hurt more of our main characters.
Real-life cults are not as obvious and over-dramatic like Defiance. Many ordinary people like you and me are deeply hurt by them all the time, and any time you joke about Deepdark's murdering or silly lieutenant shenanigans, it's always important to keep in mind that there are tons of real-life people like Deepdark out there. I never wanted to come across as unsympathetic for real-world victims of cults. Making people think more deeply about the various shades of gray and subtle acts of evil that exist in our world, as well as the inherent humanity that exists in people who do terrible things regardless, are some of my goals with creating PATFW in the first place.

Sage attending Rosalina's meetings for the first time, plus some gay peeps are there too (Seafarm, Speedflight, and Sharkbox)
Indigo and Hazel belongs to @puffymucher
Sage belongs to me
And everyone else (myths, Bolt, and Scarlet) belongs to the pookie @mirconreadzztuff22
Ngl this is one of my longest fics yet
Sage was honored to be Rosalina's escort for one of her meetings, well in a more technical sense they were more equivalent to be Rosalina's fidget toy as they were aware how apprehensive Rosa was when they were announced.
"Do you think they'll enjoy these brownies?"
Sage attempting to keep Rosalina's nerves at ease, as the two were approaching the enormous doors. Rosalina petted Sage's head,
"Of course they will darling, but if they have anything to say then they'll answer to me."
Sage, much to their expectation, was tiny in comparison to everyone in the room, thankfully they felt Rosalina's tail wrap Sage's own, thembgiving the dragonness a reassuring smile in return.
The moment didn't last long, as Sage was quickly lifted from the ground as a blurr of brown fur blocked their vision. They managed to shake it off when they met eye to eye with the stranger, a large bull demon with an almost similar scar on her face. Which unfortunately contrasted her glowing smile, placing the shaken reptile on the table so she could have a better look at them, turning her head at Rosalina's direction,
"Is this the Sage doll we've been hearing so much about?"
Sage nodded, well as much as they could given how the myth was squishing their face.
"Rosalina you didn't tell me how adorable they are! Kabra you have to say hello, wait are those brownies?"
Sage looked over at the container that held the baked goods, seeing how three other beings were already digging into it.
One of them look marine-like, with tentacles for hair, this must be Kabra, the gluttony myth that Rosalina mentioned. The kraken looked at Sage and gave them a small wave, which comforted them. Sage then reasoned that the bull who still had a grip on them was Minataur, the wrath myth, which Rosalina did mention that her and Kabra were close.
"Hey! Save some for the rest of us you savages!" A large scorpion demon snarled from across the table, who was in a tug-of-war battle with an avian-like demon for the container. Raz must be the scorpion, and Erwin the Avian, Sage remembered, noticing that Erwin had a similar prosthetic arm like them.
Erwin returned the same hiss, "There's enough for everyone dipshit! Just let me grab one for me and Bolt before you end up hogging the entire bowl!"
Sage looked behind Erwin and noticed the large hellhound who was assisting his companion in the battle. This must be Hazel's brother Bolt that they heard about, noting how the hellhound's arm wrapped around Erwin's waist.
"Hey!" Rosalina boomed. The room fell silent, which Rosa cleared her throat,
"Mina, I would appreciate it if you let go of my companion, also yes they made sure that there is more than enough for everyone to have at least two servings, even for the assistants that are also present here," gesturing at the hellhounds and a noticeably disgruntled shark demoness.
Wait isn't that Hazel's ex? No they promised her not to cause any trouble, they were no longer enemies.
Mina passed Sage back to Rosalina, who carefully placed them on her lap as she sat down. Sage tried to hop off to mimic Bolt that stood beside Erwin as he did the same, but the gentle grip that they felt from Rosalina told them enough to remain there.
Still, it didn't help unease the intense stare that they received from the sixth myth, or was it stares? As the demon possessed two faces, one of a goat for his head and a lion that rested on his chest. This must be Jeopard, the man who dropped the ball with Rosalina.
Jeopard looked at Sage with a deep scowl, "Rosalina how many more of those things are you planning to collect?"
"Al menos no me decepciona en la cama, polla flácida."
Sage didn't fully understand what Rosa said but seeing how Jeopard's teeth bared, it was definitely not a compliment.
"Me preocupa cómo esa rana sigue viva ya que estás tan orgulloso de exponer tus asuntos."
Rosalina's grip tightened on Sage's thigh as the two continued to throw insults at each other, Sage noticing how aloof and downright frustrated the other myths looked. Sage guessed that this was a normal occurrence, but the shouting match came to a screeching halt as one more member entered the room.
The figure was cloaked, with a large mask that covered their face.
Andrea, the pride myth.
Rosalina's grip shifted as she moved her arm to wrap it around Sage's waist, even if they wanted to run out from there, they were definitely trapped now. Andrea looked at the couple, only giving them a scoff, which both were grateful that it was the only thing that she gave them.
The meeting went reasonably quickly, as it was mostly about the other myths reporting the current state of the other rings and other issues that they are having to deal with in their respective stations.
After it was adjourned, Andrea was the first to leave, but not without making a snide remark that "at least this one out of all Rosalina's pests is the quietest."
Thankfully the air quickly lighten as the pride myth left, leaving the more friendlier beings to get more information about the new addition to Rosa's love life. With the exception being Jeopard, who was next to leave, not wanting to know more about whoever was sleeping with his ex.
Erwin was the first, as he noticed Sage's prosthetic, "Yo! Same arm! Also thanks a bunch for the baked goods! It's nice to know that Rosa can share a kitchen with someone rather than keeping them from burning it down!"
"Erwin, don't diss my sister like that, anyway it's awesome to meet you Sage. Hazel has told me a bunch about you, name's Bolt by the way, the excited peacock next to me is Erwin."
"And this peacock happens to be your awesome boyfriend!" Shoving his companion so he can get a better look at Sage, shaking their prosthetic a bit too excitingly, as their arm popped out of the sleeve.
"Shit, sorry about that." Erwin nervously chuckled, returning the arm back to Sage before Rosalina could bite his head off.
Minataur and Kabra were next, with the bull having her arm around Kabra's shoulder so she would be included with the conversation, "You gotta tell us how you two met!"
"Velvette was the one to introduce me to Sage, as she was dealing with one of their exes, and I just couldn't resist their charm~" Rosalina teasingly playing with Sage's ear, making them turn a bright red.
"How did you lose your arm?" Kabra asked, not realizing the weight of the question.
Sage figured that they can tell as she wasn't a certain small pup that they were babysitting, "An angel cut it off as I was escaping extermination day."
"Because you were making your way back to your loved ones dear, " Rosalina added.
"A bit sappy if you ask me, now which one of your is the top in this orgy of yours-AACK" Raz was cut off by his enormous hellhound, she looked to be even taller than Bolt, "We don't ask people invasive questions sir." She coldly stated. Turning her head to Sage she spoke in a monotone voice, "It's nice to meet you, I hope we can talk more, but Raz here has some matters to attend to," releasing the scorpion demon from her tight grip.
"Yeah I do! Let's blow this joint."
Sage managed to excuse themselves to the bathroom, where they ran into Hazel's ex and a tall imp next to her.
"Hey,"
"Hey, I'm just gonna,"
"Kay."
Sage rinsed their face over the sink, trying to quickly leave before things got more awkward than necessary, but the tall woman spoke, "Are you the one who is dating Hazel and them?"
"Pretty much, I'm Sage," shaking her hand, at least she is trying to save face.
Indigo immediately clung onto the imp, "you got four girlfriends, this one is MINE and ya not gonna add her to your harem!"
Sage just as quickly backed their hands, "I'm not trying to flirt, you guys do you, anyway it was nice to meet everyone so I'm going head back."
Sage managed to catch their breath when they got outside, returned to Rosalina's side as she was talking to Mina about a something about sharing a recipe, her conversation was cut when she felt Sage's hand, "Oh there you are! Ready to head back?"
"Yeah, I was thinking about making your favorite dish when we get home."
"Rabbit stew!" Rosalina spun the lizard, planting multiple kisses all over Sage's face, still holding them, Rosalina looked at Mina and Kabra, "We'll see if we can book a double date sometime."

Name one line in the sand your muse has. Tell us one way someone can go ‘too far’. (okay but for Volt tho)
Volt's morality is hard to explain, as a demon and a wrath demon at that... there are plenty of things he is indifferent to or even fails to see as "bad". So it's hard to have an exact line in the sand for him.
Physical fighting and killing for example is something he is completely unbothered by. People kill to defend themselves. They kill to protect others. They kill for things they believe in. They kill for power. They kill for revenge. He's had contracts for many of these things. The deaths of defenseless people who haven't personally wronged Volt are a "waste", but rarely does he find it tragic. It's the nature of all things to die after all, and he is strongly connected to the afterlife process, so death isn't even "the end" anyways.
Infidelity also isn't really a concept for the average demon. Most demons are not in monogamous relationships. Even a relationship with their bound partner(s) who you can think of as a spouse or spouses, often being open. There are exceptions of course, because every demon and every relationship are individual, but sex is not seen as personal or intimate to most of them. Generally they will have closed relationships only if envy is a major issue for one or all parties, or if one of the partners isn't a demon and their culture differs on the topic.
The real trouble with Volt is that although he's unbothered by many heavy concepts for humans, he is also easily agitated, and quick to retribution without thinking. He can and will injure others or cut them out of his life over slights that aren't that serious in the grand scheme.
Voluntas and most demons like him care a lot about fairness though. Not justice exactly, but transparency in their dealings. He would never trick someone into a pact or contract, even if the price for a wish can be extreme. He hates fae because they often use deception to get their way. Likewise, torment of others must be deserved (by the demon's own personal judgement at least), so he would deem something to be excessive on a case by case basis rather than from a baseline moral standard.
He would, for example, be fairly angry about Raz's history, or Lexi's, because their treatment was not "deserved". Yet he would do things just as cruel-- if not worse-- to the people who harmed each of them in retaliation.
So it's more accurate to say everything is evaluated individually for Volt rather than to some existing standard.

What do the ancestors do?
Welp, just going down the list of all my active muses' established ancestors:
The Huntress- Sarina Altair, ancestor of Herali (Hera) Altair. Sarina was staunchly pro-Fleet and hunted mutants on the Empire's behalf. Her final mark was The Wrathful.
The Teneborn- Shavil Taraze, ancestor of Okahni Taraze. The Teneborn was an exemplar Garo warrior who developed her own unique fighting style (as opposed to the Garo's traditional methods), aspects of which were incorporated into the Garo's general warrior training.
The Pyreborn, or The First Flame- Nasire Forrex, ancestor of Darric Forrex. He borders on a deity of balance (Such as Wildking and [REDACTED], or Ruin) and exemplifies the aspect of fire. One of the first mages of an elemental aspect.
Currently titleless, she'll get one eventually; But Variza Chibar is Aki's ancestor.
The Defender, or The Stormweaver- Fallas Hyderi, ancestor of Anirus (Ani) Hyderi. He founded and defended a small, tropical village near the sea.
The Champion- Rinkai Caukal, ancestor of Silans Caukal is a work in progress.
Rasira Larrum, or Raz, is an anomaly in that he is first and last in his line; While titleless and obviously with no descendants, his age merits being listed here.
The Wrathful- Ansera Vuipes, ancestor of Zarali Pharos, is a mutant who hunts slave-owners and mutant-killers.
Phiroe Melzau, ancestor of Ankiro Melzau, is currently titleless. The Melzau lineage is unusually closely-spaced, with ancestors and descendants often being less than a few hundred sweeps apart. Phiroe is well-known for hosting a wriggler's nature docuseries that aired about 10 sweeps prior.
The Bloodfey- Marzic Monair, with no current descendants. He is a monster hunter who was cursed with vampirism, though the curse was recently broken.
The Unseized- Akidis Mitaze, ancestor of Pheira Mitaze and Suhari (Paznic) Mitaze. She was the high priestess and leader of an ancient city-state which weathered many wars surrounding it, but eventually fell to Cataclysm.
The Deserter, or Stormward Moderator- Maerin Skargo, ancestor of Narisi (Nari) Skargo. He oversaw an early Fleet branch and was forced to flee when he tried to uncover corruption amongst his superiors.
The Leviathan Horror- Defira Kaivis, ancestor of Nebale Kaivis. A deep-seadweller whose abyssal settlement was unwittingly destroyed by surface-dwellers. In retaliation, he began sinking ships; Eventually he was caught and put on display in a circus.
Cataclysm, or The Awakened- Nirael Mikari, ancestor of Kairos Mikari and Ramira (Mira) Mikari. A conqueror in his time who nearly succeeded in taking hold of the entire planet, if not for Her Imperatorial Conqueration and the rise of the Empire.

The other Wrath demon. Yes, Vesper had... known there was another, but not their name. Not what they were to Volt, if they even were anything to each other. If they even knew each other. Of course that had been a naïve thought-- for there to be only two of them in the entire existence of history, of course they would know each other.
... Especially when it was KiZ'met's name written on temple walls and warnings of disaster, not that the Necromancer went out of his way to find it. Truthfully it was comparable to learning about a brand, and then finally noticing how common it was to find it, that it was everywhere.
What was that kind of presence to Voluntas, the Wrath Demon of Fire?
There is only desperation in asking. I need to hear it from you. Vesper had heard them all in rumors, of course. Where had he heard that name? Where hadn't he? The Wrath Demon of Ice. If Volt was the immediate, burning of repentance, KiZ'met was the cold sinking of the inevitable. Up until some few decades ago, they were always together, like two actors that were always paired together as the perfect couple for a movie. Balancing and contrasting each other in every way. The ideal.
His Infernal knew the rumors too.
...And cuts them off abruptly.
It's so startling, the blond can't help the way it feels like the floor falls out from under him. There is something almost wistful in the way gold eyes stare down into his cup, but they meet the Summoner half way. It was him that you were talking about. Realization, yes, but the answer given wasn't what he'd expected. ...Not compatible, how...?
Despite holding that gaze up until that point, he finds his stare dropping to his own cup, the alcohol that glimmered in the dull club lighting. "I don't really get what you mean as unruly," is finally said, to the tequila, to the flashing lights, to the presence across from him. "...Never had trouble understanding you once we..."
Talked... it out.
Vesper takes to his feet, knocking his chair backward as he did. "Sorry. I'm a hypocrite." An apology, but one he'll follow through with. His fingers curl around the shot glass and lifts it to his lips in a sharp one-two motion. Liquid courage, or something. "It's you."
"The person I've been more interested in than Raz-- Voluntas," again his tongue sparks, and again he talks through it, though far faster than before, without the calm that came with betting it all, "it's you, okay? It's you." As soon as it's left his mouth, the room feels too claustrophobic with all the bodies and strobing colors, dizzying despite only one glass not being enough to sway himself usually.
"I--" I need to go. Already spinning on his heel and jacket in hand. "--I'll see you at home-"
That scent is still strong in his muzzle, metallic tang still on his teeth even after wound seals. It had been so very little, a mere taste of addiction. Disappointing, as the human’s hand slips away, but ultimately unsurprising. Voluntas’ claws loosen, allowing his companion to draw backwards.
“Ask.” Direct, but not scathing. No, his thoughts are already elsewhere, self loathing hot in his chest. The rules fall away at the sudden coldness in his companion.
…had that been too forward? Too much? In the moment it had been thoughtless fun. Too caught up to consider if… don’t do that again. Chiding. Don’t ruin this. Desperation. Not with him. Anything to keep this precious thing. Swallow your feelings.
Volt’s posture slowly straightens, his provocative air burning away in a flash. Control yourself. Fingers curl around the stem of the goblet, a frown where once fangs rested. Focused, sharp senses await what will come. A question, the sound of Vesper’s voice laced with their intertwined magics. The Infernal’s mouth opens on command, urged by the contract between master and familiar.
“KiZ'met.” A name that comes with wisps of gold flame from the corners of the demon’s maw. “…is the other wrath demon.” A brief lopsided snarl begins to form, but fades. Misplaced fury. Temper yourself, Voluntas.
“I do not know where you heard that name… but we have not spoken in many years,” started again, his tail curling loosely on the floor beneath him. “I know the rumors.” Constantly followed by them, then and now. “…your real question is not who is KiZ'met, but who is he to me.” A statement, a fact. By now the magic of the command has long since left, yet he continues all the same.
“He does not fill the void, Vesperling.” His attention drifts to the swirling red and black in his glass. Contemplative. “We can choose a great many things in this life, but we cannot make ourselves fit what we are not meant to. He and I are not compatible in that way.” Volt’s cheek rests on his free hand, eyes returning to the human’s face. The Infernal’s demeanor softens, even if he’s hesitant to say more.
“…but there may still be someone out there, even for a beast as unruly as myself.”
