Piper watched him eat with raised eyebrows at his sped through the Beignets. “Wow…thats impressive.” She chuckled, taking a sip of her beer. She watched him curiously. What was a handsome stranger doing in this bar/restaurant in the middle of no where? Not that she was complaining. It was nice seeing a new face and there was something different about him. Not just the way he looked or the way that he was actually talking to her politely. Also how was he sucking down that much fat and sweet tea?! It was a shock he would be able to roll out of the bar.
“I’ve been playing with the recipe for years…but none of these heathens can appreciate it.” She chuckled. She didn’t have time to ask much more then that though as he pulled out his wallet and paid. “Be careful!” She called out after him, surprised by the suddenness of it. Once he was gone she caught the local guys looked at her and rolled her eyes. “Be nice.” She snapped at them in the tone of a school teacher annoyed with their students talking too much.
She ended up leaving the bar after closing down at 1 am getting home and relieving the baby sitter. After checking on her sister she kissed the six year olds head before pouring herself a glass of wine going going out onto the large plantation houses wrap around porch. She eyed the woods, the way that the trees were moving and looked down at the grave yard dirt sprinkled across the top of the porch steps. She couldn’t help but think of the poor man from today and hope that he was somewhere safe. She should have asked where he was staying so she could check. Not that it mattered- there was only one motel. She had to remind herself though that it wasn’t her responcibility. She gulped down the rest of the wine and headed in, stepping over the graveyard dirt and the spell it wove.
Hearing her name she looked up, a smile coming to her lips at the sight of him. Well it looked like he had made it through the night. “Well look whos back.” She put a box she was carrying down and whipped her hands on her jeans. “I thought maybe we might have scared you off.” She admitted. “But I”m never here in the mornings. I have a little sister and I like to take her to school.” She admitted. An eyebrow cocked up. “With yesterday I thought you might still be full.” She teased.
@sharpenurdamnknife
Devlin smiled, but it did not reach all the way. He thought his stay here would be short, and he preferred it to be as such. The people here did not seem the most inviting and warm. But if there was anything good about the town, it was Piper.
"Takes a lot to get me running for the hills," he commented, "glad I'm here in the afternoon then. I got a lot of unfinished business, so you might be seeing me until its done." Thing is, Devlin cannot say exactly how long he'd be around, but it all depended on the monster hunt and finding this woodland creature the first place.
"I ate a lot, didn't I? Can't help it when the food is that good," he added as he took a seat not that far from where he sat the night before.
"Are there any stories of monsters, creepy cryptids in this town? Every small town has one, Piper."
Devlin knew this question might seem random or out of the blue, but in a short amount of time, he did make a reputation to Piper on being a curious man. It may seem like he was only making small talk, but he had other motives too. Piper seemed like a reliable source of information, especially with how quick witted the woman was.
He trusted her.

Thanksgiving, Medium Rare
MSR | Post IWTB | 628 Words | tagging: @today-in-fic
November 25, 2009
“What do you mean everyone is coming to our house?”
Hiding in a supply closet at the hospital, Scully pinched the bridge of her nose with one hand and held the phone with the other. “Mom’s kitchen flooded while she was out and shorted out the refrigerator. So the food is all spoiled and the kitchen needs significant work to repair the damage and Bill’s family is already on a plane…” she trailed off.
“We can’t just go to a restaurant?”
“For Thanksgiving? Mulder.” She’d known he wasn’t going to be excited about this when her mom had called to ask. “We are in our 40s. We can handle hosting a family gathering.”
She heard him sigh. “Ok. Well, considering you work until nine tonight and tomorrow’s the big day, I guess this is on me.”
“I’m sorry. I have a couple minutes now if you want help making a list.”
“I think I can figure it out. So. Plan dinner, go grocery shopping, clean the house… I need to get some woodland creatures in to help.”
She smiled. “Thank you, Mulder-rella.”
.
“Where’s the turkey?”
“About that.” He joined her in front of the open fridge. “They didn’t have any more at the store. So.” He reached in, grabbing a hunk of red meat. “Thanksgiving steaks!”
She stared at him for a long moment. “You’re serious.”
“What? I know how to cook these, they’re delicious, and, by the way, more expensive per pound than a turkey. I think this really shows the high esteem in which we hold our guests.”
As if her family didn’t already question all her choices in life, she was now going to serve them Thanksgiving steaks.
.
She was mashing potatoes when her mom joined her in the kitchen. “Steak is an interesting choice.”
Though Scully agreed, she knew she had to present a united front with Mulder on this. “There weren't a lot of options at the store. And steak is delicious. Mulder is very good at grilling it.”
“Ok, honey.” Her mom didn’t sound terribly convinced.
.
“Why can’t we have turkey?” Bill and Tara’s eldest whined as everyone began serving themselves.
Despite her love for her nephew, she wanted to smack him upside the head at the moment. She’d spent the day in the kitchen with Mulder making sides. Her feet hurt. The table was laid with a pretty good meal on less than twenty four hours notice, and all everyone could focus on was the lack of a stupid turkey.
“Matt, we’ve been over this,” Tara cut in. “Be thankful for the wonderful meal your aunt and uncle prepared.”
Scully saw Bill bristle at Mulder being his child’s uncle, before saying, “Next year we’ll have a real Thanksgiving, son.”
Good lord, this day couldn’t be over soon enough.
.
“We are never hosting again.”
“Aw, come on Scully, it wasn’t that bad.”
She leaned against him, and his arm dropped from resting on the couch to wrapping around her shoulder.
“You realize this is going to go down in family lore. The time when loony Aunt Dana and Uncle Mulder served steaks at Thanksgiving. It’s like the Thanksgiving that Missy had the stomach flu and threw up all over the table.”
“I don't know how you can compare steaks to barf.”
She chuckled. “You’re right. It was better than barfs-giving.”
He kissed the top of her head. “A ringing endorsement for our cooking if I ever heard one.”
She turned to look up at him. “Thanks for putting all this together. And sorry everyone was an ass about the steaks.” She stretched her neck to give him a peck on the lips. “I love you.”
“I love you, too.” He stroked her arm, before returning his attention to the TV.

Chapter 7: The Return Of An Old Freind
As tough as the clan may be at first sight, worry could spread quickly among them. At first it wasn't anything grand, as Sven would explain the leaders were looking for better shelter. It was when their children and the ghost seemed to leave and failed to come back when everyone allowed themselves to show what they were feeling. And while they were relieved when the family came back, many were confused and worried.
Admintly, Right Hand Man's eyes were the main thing that kept the worry from disappearing. At first, second, and many more glances, it appeared that some sort of blue gem had grown over the robotic side of his face. Like some sort of creature was trying to take from, and using him as a host of sorts. Needless to say, many were shocked to find out it was ice. That was all they needed to hear to understand they weren't getting better shelter anytime soon.
Right Hand Man ended up getting scolded a bit by the head of the medical department, Shelia, why she tried to remove the ice from his eye. Right Hand Man just silently took it all, although since it covered his metal side, he felt she was overreacting. However, it was taking a while for the ice to be removed. After about an hour of trying, it was clear melting it alone wasn't going to do any good.
Reginald at frist objected to the idea of trying to chip it off his eye, for fear of it hitting and breaking the glass. However, he agreed after it was pointed out the ice being there too long could cause issues, whether they broke the glass in the end or not. He just sat beside Right Hand Man, looking away and occasionally flinching at the sound of ice being chipped away. It was almost like waiting out a storm.
Eventually, all the ice was removed, allowing the two to leave and start to find the next step in their plan. By now, evening had come, the area getting darker, but not where it was impossible to see. The sky started to look more like a painting then the bright or dark blue it was usually known by everyone for. Reginald let a small smile from on his face at the sight. Before a blush also formed as a rumble went through the air, him grabbing his stomach slightly.
"'ungery, Are we?" Right Hand Man asked teasingly, chuckling slightly when he got a huff in return. He rubbed where his cybernetic eye was slightly, and nearly jolted back at the sudden chill. Ok, maybe Sheila did have a bit of a point when she was scolding him. Not that he was paying attention. He glanced back at his husband. "'ey, I am too, no need to be worried about it. We'll just grab somet'in' from t'e box again."
"The box was nearly empty this morning, probably is empty now." Reginald sighed, glancing back at Right Hand Man as the two approached where the others were. "I suppose we could see if we can have some of those large cherries from the forest... although I don't trust the colour."
"Out of all t'e t'ings you could possibly not trust in t'at g'ost's woods, it's t'e color of some fruit?" Right Hand Man shook his head in a playful manner, but Reginald just gave him a faint stare. He knew the hidden meaning behind that, and Right Hand Man knew he knew. The cyborg let out a sigh. "Look, I know you say we can trust 'im, and I'll admit, 'e could've just left t'e kids alone in t'at place, but still..."
"You get a bad feeling and think we shouldn't trust him." Reginald finished for him, shaking a head to the side. He rubbed his gloved hand slightly, trying to get rid of some of the cold from earlier. "I know you don't. But please, just give him a chance. I'm sure he means well. Just has his... own way of expressing it.. right Hattie?" Reginald called as she entered his sights.
She glanced over at the two. "If it's about something good with Snatcher, yes." She said, watching Right Hand Man glance to the side and Reginald giving a small grin in response. She rolled her eyes, before letting out a slight yawn. "Weird... I'm not really tried, but I am at the same time." She noted aloud, getting a slight eye roll from Platinum, who would never know the definition of being tried.
"I'm surprised I haven't collapsed into a coma by now." Burt added, getting a slight glare from Sven beside him. "I haven't had any coffee in two days. Two days! I asked Mr. Thicc to just throw a pot over a fire and make some and he said no!"
"Because it would ruin the pot, Burt." The chef explained triedly, having sat down ageist the edge of the orbital station's broken off wall. He knew Burt wasn't trying to be mean, it's just the guy seemed to think if he didn't have coffee, he was going to mess everything up or something. Not that he would ever share those thoughts aloud. "And the last thing we need is pots being ruined. We'll need them for when the kitchen is working again."
"You mean if, at this point." Sven sighed, leaning against Calla triedly. He smiled as he felt her grab his shoulders, most likely to keep him steady even though he could stand fine on his own. He then noticed some of the others staring at him. "What? I hate to say it, but I'm just being honest here. We have no way to properly fix half of the inside alone!"
"We know Sven, trust me, we know." Reginald sighed, glancing down at the ground slightly. He felt Right Hand Man wrap an arm around his shoulder, and while he appreciated his attempt to cheer him up, it wasn't going to do much. Sven glanced down in a bit of shame, glancing at Calla, who for a moment seemed to be in space. "Just don't say that around the others, ok?" Sven nodded, although the look in his eyes said 'not yet'.
"Welp, sucks for you all." Platinum said, shrugging slightly, before getting a slight shove from Hat Girl. He held his hands up in defense, he knew she wasn't going to hurt him, nor meant anything from the shove, but still. "Woah, sorry ok! I was just kidding! Can't a topbot make one joke about how his lack of need for stuff like food is useful?" He asked.
Burt threw his head into his hands, letting out a slight grone. This was the most clear emotion people have seen from Burt in quite a bit. "I blame you for all this, Fredrick." He mumbled, the cheese hat toppat giving a faint glare at him. The others let out faint chuckles, trying to find some humor in this. Burt sighed, crossing his arm as he regained himself. "It's almost like I can still smell food."
"Because I think you do." Calla said, glancing over at him, both him and Sven glancing over to give her a confused look. "I can smell something in the air. And... strangely it smells like it's coming closer. I think?"
Hat Girl took a sniff of the air. "Yeah, I smell it too." Hat Girl said, glancing in the direction it seemed to be the strongest in. It was only then they noticed the bushes at the edge of the woodlands were beginning to shake, like something was inside. Right Hand Man didn't want to take any chances, getting in front of the group and getting his lazer blaster ready. "Papa, wait. They could be harmless!"
Before Right Hand Man had a chance to respond, something gray pushed itself out from the bushes. At first they were a bit startled by the sudden appearance, but then realized it wasn't some sort of creature. It was some sort of serving table with wheels like those in fancy restaurants, only this one was a bit bigger and, as they came to find, longer than those. A strange site, even for a planet like this.
Eventually, it came to a stop, and by now had gotten the attention of some other toppats. Most were questioning how it got here and why. Some seemed to be debating whether or not to quickly garb as much of the silver covered dishes on it as they could.
There was a faint huffing of sorts, faintly able to be heard from the other side. Hat Girl got past Right Hand Man, walking along the tables side to get to the other end. She already had a hunch who it was, she just had questions. After about a minute or two of just walking, she came to the end, and glanced at the figure that was there. She wasn't even surprised when she saw the fur, giving a confused smile. "Cooking Cat?"
"W-Who else?" Cooking Cat asked, trying to catch her breath.
"Are you ok, you look tired." Hat Girl stated, offering the cat a hand. After a moment, the cat took it, and was lifted back onto her feet. She hadn't changed a day, or if she did, it wasn't something visible to the teen girl's eyes. Cooking Cat soon hop onto a empty spot on the table, allowing the two to be more face to face. "What are you even doing out here anyway? I don't take you as the type to get lost."
"Because I'm not lost!" Cooking Cat stated, giving a slight giggle at the confused look she received in response. "I happened to hear about your clan's whole 'crashed on this planet situation' yesterday from two mafia, and I thought I would stop by to help!"
"Hattie?" Reginald called as he walked up to her in confusion, and slight worry. He saw the orange blur appear on the table's side, but didn't know what exactly it was. He knew if Hattie hadn't fallen over by now, it was likely safe, but he had to make sure. He stopped when he noticed the cat in the chef's uniform, a bit surprised at first, but soon the pieces clicked into place. "Oh! Is this one of your friends?"
"Yup!" Hat Girl said, a smile on her face. "This is Cooking Cat! She makes some of the best food on this planet, trust me, I let her use the oven in my ship before! And I guess she brought us this food. How did you know we needed it?" She turned her attention back to the cat.
"Well, I'm not an alien like you all are, but I can assume food isn't a common thing after a ship crashes." She said, shrugging her arms.
Reginald took another glance at the table. The fact she came out here just to give them all this. Sure, most of it likely wouldn't last past a few hours, but they could get what they could save in an icebox or freezer. He smiled, as he turned to the cat. "You have no idea how much this means to us all. I wish we could repay you..."
"There's no need to worry, Mister! As soon as I heard she was back on this planet, I just knew I had to do something for her!" Cooking Cat waved him off, glancing back at Hat Kid with a smile. She then seemed to pause. "You've grown quite a lot these past few years! I mean, I shouldn't be surprised. But I was sorta expecting you would still be your old size.”
"Hey, being an alien doesn't mean I grow any faster or slower than humans." She chuckled slightly, glancing back at Reginald, who gave her a slight smile, before leaving, assuming to start planning how the food would go out. She could faintly see Fredrick holding Burt's shoulder, assumingly to keep him from garbing any and all coffee that could be here. "Oh, while I'm on the topic! How's Mu doing?"
"Why don't cha ask her yourself!" Hat Girl tilted her head to the side at her words. As if on cue, another table of sorts started to come out of the bushes. More stuff was on this one, likely making it slightly heavier. By the time it was all in view, she could see the Mustached Teen appear at the end, wiping her forehead slightly. A small smile formed on Hat Girl's face.
"Mu!" A robotic voice called along with Hat Girl's as the two raced over to the red-hooded girl. Mu spotted them and took a sigh, as if more tried by the sight of them. They soon got by her side, the siblings glancing at each other with a chuckle, before Platinum turned his attention back to the visitor. "Mu! We didn't expect you to show up so soon. We would, well, we would've tried to clean the place up, but uhhh.." He glanced back at the crashed station.
"Wow, that is a lot of cleaning up to do." Mu said after a moment of processing, giving a faint chuckle. "I wasn't planning on coming here today anyway. But Cooking Cat needed some help getting everything here, so I thought I would help. Needed an excuse to the get out of town."
"Well, we're happy to have you here!" She placed a hand on her shoulder. She wanted to give her a hug, but knew Mu wouldn't like that without a warning. Mu rolled her eyes, removing Hat Girl's hand from the shoulder. Platinum wrapped an arm around Hat Girl's shoulder, making her chuckle slightly. She then brought her attention back to Mu. "I'm not sure when exactly we'll get to eat. Most of the members here are probably starving after all."
"Again, one good thing about me being me." Platinum said, watching Hat Girl shake her head and Mu give him a faintly confused look. "Oh! I don't need to eat since I'm a robot. Or drink or the other stuff humans need too. I know, I'm lucky."
"I'm not dumb, I knew that." Mu said, slight offence in her voice. "I was wondering why you think it's so good you're missing out on everything except oil." Platinum's mouth was stuck open in shock, him processing what just happened the best he could. Hat Girl couldn't help it, she let out a laugh that likely drew some attention over to them. Mu tried holding back her own chuckle, but it proved useless in the end.
"Oh my goodness! That was perfect Mu!" Hat Girl said, eventually having to wipe a tear from her eye. As much as she loved her brother, she couldn't help but find it funny when he got like this. "It was so simple, yet so perfect at the same time!" The girls eventually slowed down there laughing and chuckling, and Platinum was able to pull himself out of being a statue, crossing his arms.
"Hattie!" They turned when Reginald's voice was heard, him walking over to the group. By now the smell of food had grown around them, as the food was now exspose to the air. Hat Girl would be lying if she tried to claim her mouth wasn't watering. "Oh, Mu is here too? That's wonderful!" He smiled, before resuming. "It might take a few minutes, but you should get ready to grab your food. And don't steal half the cookies, again, ok?"
She held her hands up in defense at his knowing glare, but couldn't help but let out a giggle. "Don't worry, Dad. It would be bad for me to go for sweets right away anyway." Satisfied with the answer, Reginald gave a nod and walked back to where Right Hand Man was.
A bit of a system was set up so no one tries to rush in for the food. The last thing they needed was it all to go over the ground after all. The younger kids were the first ones, their parents alongside them to help them get it, and so they wouldn't just pick any and all sweets their eyes laid on. The teens would go next, then it was mostly going to go from higher to lower, which everyone seemed alright with.
Hat Girl tried to keep her dish somewhat simple when it came time for her and the other teens to go up. When she walked away, her plate simply had some of the grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, corn, and a breakfast sausage. She was half tempted to dig in at that very second, but wanted to keep her manor-... politeness.
"You know, going two days without food, I thought you would have gotten some more." Mu noted aloud as she came up to where she was. Mu’s plate simply considend of pork chops, green beans, and mashed potatoes, all of which looked like they were just carelessly placed there. Must not have wanted to spend too long on garbing the food. "Unless you have some sort of longer timeframe you all can go without food.
Hat Girl shrugged. "I just didn't want to take too much. There's many people here after all, and I want to be sure we all get something. Although... I was laying my eyes on some of those chocolate strawberries..."
"Yeah, I noticed" Mu snorted, letting out a chuckle as they got near one of the fire pits. Fredrick blew on the wood he held, finally getting a bit of a flame. He tossed it in the fire, and let out a slight strike as it burst to life so suddenly. Burt caught onto him, rolling his visible eye while Platinum couldn't help but laugh. "I suppose this is your first time lighting one?" Mu comment, to which Fredrick pretended she wasn't there.
"Hey, I could probably help, but Dad doesn't like me messing with stuff that could possibly hurt us. Me being made of metal- '' He stopped when he saw a faint glare enter the girls eyes. "Ok, jeez, no more robo talk."
"Thank you." Hat Girl stated, before taking a bite out of her food. Maybe it was just not having anything besides fruit, bread, and bars for the past two days, but her eyes nearly started watering at the taste. This food had to be at least an hour old if it came all the way from mafia town, but it still tasted fresh out of the oven! Or pots. "Man, I knew I said she makes some of the best food on this planet, but I forgotten how good!"
"I don't care for the food itself mostly. My eye is on all that coffee." Burt felt a slight smack, seeing a glare from Fredrick as he pulled his arm back. "What I do and don't eat is not any of your concern. Besides, you're most likely going after the cheese."
"At least I was planning on getting some soup as well! Or any of the actual food over there!" Fredrick pointed his hand over at the table, where now most of the higher ups were trying to get their food, some more picky than others. In response, Burt just shrugged and walked over to the table, leaving Fredrick to let out a frustrated sigh. "I'm going to find Sammy." He mumbled, walking away.
Reginald happened to come over with Right Hand Man then, giving the toppat a confused look. "Is he alright?" he asked, sitting across from where Hat Girl and Mu were. Right Hand Man gently tosses the two a bottle of water, before sitting besides Reginald. "I don't think I've ever seen him this upset before. Then again, we hardly see him."
"Yeah, he's just a little upset about Burt only wanting the coffee. It's weird, they were having a similar conversion before the station crash." Platinum said, shrugging his shoulders slightly. He glanced at his parents dishes, seeing Reginald had picked out that 'fish and chips' dish along with some steak. RHM had steak as well, as well as some roasted potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower. He also had some Strawberry shortcake as well. Guess he must have had a bit of a sweet tooth today.
"So, Mu. If you don't mind me asking." Hat Girl said, getting the blonde to look at her. "You said you needed an excuse to get out of mafia town? How come?" She took another quick bite of food.
"Funny story actually." Mu said, a smirk forming on her face at the thought of it all. "So, I may or might not have found these small pink and purple overalls just laying around. And then sneaked in Mafia HQ. Then waited for Mafia Jar to fall asleep. Then for his guards to leave. Then guled the overalls to the mafia's jar, well, jar." She couldn't help but let out an evil chuckle. "So yeah, pretty sure I have a bounty until those idiots forget about it tomorrow."
The area around the campfire was silent, before Right Hand Man broke out laughing. "T'at's just perfect! 'nd Doin' all t'at at yer age as well!" He felt Reginald garb his shoulder faintly and he calmed down, allowing Platinum's laughter and Hat Girl's giggles to be more clear. "Normally I don't condemn people doin' t'at, but 'e disbursed it."
"How's everyone doing here?" A voice called, the group looking over faintly as the orange cat appeared again. "I figure since everything seems to be going well with the tables, I might as well check on you all!" She glanced at the fire faintly bringing her paws to it for a bit of warmth. "This is really nice. It's a good thing you didn't crash in the desert. Although, you likely have some supper alien tech that could turn sand to fire."
"I'm the only alien of us." Hat Girl said, before pausing a moment. "Well, I guess technically they're aliens too, to this planet at least. But they're just like the humans like Mu on here." She bump a shoulder into that of the red hooded girl. "Besides, even if we had something like that, the sand would become glass."
"Well, that's true I suppose." Cooking Cat shrugged, taking a quick bite out of the fish she brought over. "Say, how did you meet them all anyway? Since they're not your original species and all."
"Her ship crashed on our planet and I happened to see. Thank goodness we got there in time to help her out safely." Reginald looked over at his daughter with a smile, before glancing up slightly, a thought entering his mind. "I wonder if anyone else ever found it. I recall checking the news the first few days and saw nothing about it."
"If anyone's found it by now, MrBeast would have made a 'I Spent 24 Hours In The Mysterious Crashed SpaceShip' video." Platinum comment, getting an eye roll from Right Hand Man.
Mu gave the topbot a confused look. "Who's MrBeast?"
"He's a Youtuber, if you know what that means." Hat Girl said, revising a shrug from Mu in return. "Makes sense, I knew you had a version of Twitter and Ebay here, but wasn't sure about that site. Anyway, he does these crazy challenge videos and a lot of the time puts money on the line. Also gives a lot of it away. Me and Platinum occasionally watch him when we're bored."
"Good guy, then." Mu nodded, seeming pleased with the answer. By now she had finished her plate, and set it off to the side.
"If we ever get a connection to youtube here, we'll be sure to show you!" Platinum said, before gasping. "Maybe we can make some version of Youtube here and use that to get pons! I tried to do the 24 hours on an island challenge once! Only made it to 34 minutes before Pops dragged me back to the airship again."
"I still don't know how you got the drop pod to send you there, those were programmed so anyone under 18 couldn't get themselves in a situation like that!" Reginald let out a tired sigh, leaning against his husband.
"Besides Platinum." Right Hand Man spoke up, rubbing his husband's back slightly. "Makein' videos would be t'e worst way to go around t'e pon situation."
To the cyborg's slight surprised, Platinum didn't try to fight the claim. Instead he just let out a sigh, garbing a nearby log and tossing it into the fire. Reginald just shook his head at the bot, preferring he'd not risk getting burnt but too tired to do anything about it. A frown could be seen on the silver face. "Yeah, Pops. I know..."
The area was slowly getting darker, as evening was slowly turning into night. Only a faint bit of a glowing orange could be seen by the treeline, the sun would be gone within the next hour. By now more camp fires were being lit up, and the glow from metal member's eyes were becoming more noticeable. Small flares would escape from the flame, doing a small dance for the group before burning out and becoming lost to the human eye.
The heat from the fire was becoming more apparent the colder the air around them came. She reached for her neck, losing the scarf slightly to allow it to cool off. She was faintly able to see some member's silhouettes as they got things ready for that night. She was faintly able to see Sven and Calla chatting as the former was grabbing some buckets, while Fredrick worked on setting back up some tents that had fallen earlier that day.
"Cooking Cat, right?" Hat Girl nearly jolted at the sudden voice near the group, turning over to see Mr. Thicc look down at the cat, who nodded with a humm. "I know you must have already gotten this compliment from many others, but I really have to say that your food is amazing. Some of the best I've had in my life."
Cooking Cat gave a smile to the man. "No need for thanks, sir. Cooking for others has always been a passion of mine! Why, that's why I gave myself my name after all!" She gave a small giggle.
"Wait, cooking cat's your rea... You know what. After meeting people named 'Conductor' or 'Mustache Girl' it's too late to ask how names work here." Platinum said, before pausing and looking over at the girls. "Uhh, no offence Mu."
"None taken." Mu shrugged slightly, before pulling her sleeve up as far as it could go.
"'ey, my names Right Hand Man, so I don't 'ave any rig't to start judgein'." Right Hand Man stated as he looked at Mu. "Atltoug' I would be lyin' if I said I didn't find t'e amount of t'ese types of names weird. It's almost like yer all goin' by TV host nicknames."
"Not that I blame you in her case. Cooking Cat does have a show!" Hat Girl piped up.
"Well, it's had now, although you can still stumble upon some episodes on TV." Cooking Cat chime in, letting out a slight giggle as Hat Girl gave her a confused look. "As fun as it was having one, it was starting to get tiring after a while. It did end up giving me enough pons to open a restaurant in Mafia Town!"
"Wow! Now I wished I knew! Would've stop by to say hi yesterday!" Hat Girl said. And it likely would have kept her and Platinum from walking in when they did, ruining the clan's best chance to get pons... A small sigh left her mouth but she kept a smile.
"Bet it took you a while to get your employees to cook as well as you." Mr. Thicc chuckled slightly as he looked down at her.
"Well...." Cooking Cat sighed. "I don't exactly have any employees. Sure I've had many in the past, but none lasted too long and I never had many at a time. Mafia Town isn't the best place to work at if you're not the owner of a place." Mu gave a nod to that statement, despite having no way to know that exact fact. "Had to close the place today just so I could deliver all this."
"I'm so sorry. If we knew you were going to do this for us, we would have found a way to properly pay you for your lost time" Reginald said, a frown forming on his face. "I do have a small bit of gold, but that won't do much on this planet."
"Oh, there's no need to worry mister." Cooking Cat said, shaking her head, voice still with that joyful tone. "Since it's mostly me running the place, I have enough pons to close for a few days and not lose anything if I wanted to! The only real employees I have are my distant cousin from the metro, and a teen from Alpine who comes in on the weekends. And the fromer doesn't show up much." She let out a sigh. "Would be nice to have a few more hands, though."
There was a humm from the toppat chef, before he snapped his fingers, startlingly the toppat who had drifted into the land of his mind. "I got it! I'll need to talk about it with some of the other chefs, but maybe some of us can start working for you."
"What?" Reginald asked, looking over confused. Unless he was planning on sneaking some food back to the clan, how was that going to help.
"Think about it. Even if we do only make a couple pons per shift, that will at least give us a steady source of money we can used to repair the station." Mr. Thicc said, and Reginald was silent for a moment. The answer was so simple, how come he didn't think of it before. "Sure, it may not be the fastest method to get the station fixed, it'll take forever, but it'll be better then nothing!"
"It's... It's perfect!" Reginald said, nearly hopping out of his seat in the joy and relief that willed his being at that very moment. "It's the answer we needed!" He then brought his attention back to the orange cat. "Well... if you're ok with it, that is."
"Well, you'll all have to wake up mighty early in order to get there on time. But I don't see a problem with it!" Cooking Cat said, a smile forming on her face.
"Then it's settled!" Reginald said, clapping his hands slightly. "Mr. Thicc, please go see if any of our other chefs will be interested in working with her?" The man nodded, gray shoes hitting agest the earth as he disappeared. Reginald let out a sigh of relief, leaning against his husband once again.
"Easy Reg, don't want ya passin' out on us." Right Hand Man chuckled, stroking his lover's hair faintly.
"This is probably the most relaxed I've seen Dad." Platinum chuckled, before glancing up at the sky, as everything got the smallest bit darker. "Welp, I should get to my charger. I'll see you all tomorrow." He gave a faint poke in Hat Girl's shoulder as he left, getting a playful glare in return.
"Well, I suppose I should leave." Cooking Cat, standing back up. "It's gonna be a real pain to get back in the dark. Might as well not make it worse."
"Yeah. Well, it was nice seeing you, I suppose." Mu said, giving a slight wave before getting up, getting ready to leave.
"Wait." Reginald called, the two from this planet looking over at him in such confusion. "We... may not have the best condition for guests right now. But please, allow yourselves to stay the night here. It'll be safer for you, and as of right now, it's about the most we can do in return for the kindness you show us tonight."
"Yeah. You two could even sleep in my tent tonight. It normally has enough room for one comfortably but you two should be able to make it work. I can sleep by one of the fires tonight." Hat Girl chimed in. She caught a slight disaproveable of the lack of tent from Reginald's eye, but he didn't say anything.
"Well... I suppose I'll have Mafia Goons outside my place if I return now." Mu sighed, kicking at the ground. "So I suppose I'll take your offer. Although I could also just spend the night in the boat. Would be easier."
"Now, a boat isn't a place for a young girl like yourself to sleep." Cooking Cat said, hoping up and garbing her hand. Hat Girl noticed a faint glare coming from Mu, but made no comment. She was sure she could guess why the glare was there. "Come on, let's find a place to rest." Mu simply nodded, and they disappeared into the dark. The dark of night, lit up with little fires... The dark of space, lit up by night stars...
"Hattie, are you alright?" Reginald asked, placing a hand on her shoulder. She shook her head, breaking out of her thoughts, glancing back at him. "You seemed... sad there for a moment."
"Yeah. I'm fine." She looked at him, giving him a soft smile. "I'm just glad we got things figured out. We'll be back home before we know it." She'll be gone before she knows it.

Woodland get away
A self ship, self indulgent fic for my Anniversary with Red.
Part 2: Saturday.
The sun shone through the gap in the curtain stirring Red awake… or was it the delicious scent of food that filled the air that woke him? Either way he rubs his sockets and yawns. That's when he notices the empty space next to him.
He doesn't have much time to think or wonder, though before she walks in with a tray of food.
“Morning love.” She chimes.
“Was this sweetheart?” He mumbles in his rough morning voice, stretching as he sits up.
“Breakfast in bed for my dearest husband.” She sits down next to him and plants a kiss on his cheekbone before placing the tray on his lap. “Pancakes and coffee for my love.”
“You spoil me Doll.”
“Happy Anniversary Red.”
“Happy Anniversary Kezi.”
He pulls her in for a quick kiss before he turns his attention to his food.
“Thanks Sweetheart, almost looks as gorgeous as you.”
She giggles. Such a sweet sound he could never get tired of.
“You’re welcome. I’ll just go get mine, real quick.”
She goes and gets her own tray of breakfast and sits on the bed beside him. They enjoy their meal together and have a little cuddle session before getting ready to go out. Kezi hadn't really made any plans, neither of them usually do the whole plans thing so it was time to head out and see what they could find to do.
The fresh cold morning air welcomes them. The whole forest is covered in a thick blanket of white, fluffy snow.
Kezi beams as she walks out into the winter wonderland. It still baffles Red how excited she gets over the snow, though from the 3 years of living here he can kinda see why, it is pretty rare, that doesn’t make her fascination with it any less cute though, makes him think back at their brief time in the underground together… he couldn't understand why she wanted to play in the snow so badly, it was cute… but oh man was that whole ordeal a rollercoaster.
His thoughts were interrupted by a giggle followed by a snowball to the face.
“Oh no ya didn’t.” He chuckles.
“Oh I think I did.” She snickers.
And then a snow war broke out between them, Red was always a hard target to hit unless caught unaware, and he’s got amazing aim. She got a couple hits but if they were keeping score he definitely would have won. While they were playing in the snow already they of course had to make a little snowman, or well Kezi insisted making a little snow family so Snowbert wasn’t lonely.
Then they made a quick warm up stop and got a bite to eat at one of the coffee shops dotted around, after that they set off into the snowy forest once more.
Red drags her over to the ice skating rink… it was almost as if he had this planned. They have a lot of fun skating, Kezi isn't the best on the ice, but Red is pretty confident and has her every step(?) of the way. Then Red leads her to a nice restaurant, Kezi was surprised to find out that Red was hiding a nice dress shirt under his jacket. She felt a tad under dressed now… that's not fair, but Red made sure she knows that if she wears that cute smile she has then she's always dressed for the occasion.
After an amazing dinner they sit on a bench in the town surrounded by all the fairy lights that are neatly strewn around. It was starting to get dark now so Kezi broke out the glow sticks making necklaces and bracelets for them both. Red doesn't mind despite feeling slightly silly, it brings a smile to her face so it's worth it.
"Beautiful." She giggles after putting the glow stick necklace around his neck.
"Me? Wha? Na. Ya eyes must be broken." He chuckles.
"Na uh my eyes be fine, and Yes you. Lookie it matches your amazing eyelights." She pouts.
"You're so weird Kitten."
"I know. So are you sometimes but that's why we're perfect for eachother." She leans up and kisses his forehead. "Oh I made you a prezzie." She uses her phone to get a little box out of her inventory. "Here."
"Was this?"
"Open it silly and find out."
He takes the box and opens it up. Inside is a golden pocket watch, a cool embossed pattern on it with Kezi and Red writing around it, on the back it says 104. Inside the clock face is black with red numbers. The whole thing has a magical shimmer to it.
"Wow, really cool, ya made it yer self?"
"Yup, I had a little help from… well… myself. Oh and it's not just a pocket watch, it's like the protection keychain but fancier, a-also it's like a locket and you can put a picture in it. If you want."
"That's amazing Sweetheart, I'll keep it close always. I got one question?"
"Yeah?"
"What's 104 mean?"
"Oh well it's um…" her cheeks flush. "You see… you're red… which is the 1st colour of the rainbow and my colour is green which is 4th… and everyone knows a 'O' is a hug… soo…"
"Oh my freakin' stars Kezi. How are ya this freakin' cute?"
"I don't know."
"I got you some stuff too." He gets two boxes out of his inventory one is obviously her favourite chocolates and her face lights up at the sight of them. The other is a little box with a green bow on. He hands her the boxes. She carefully takes off the bow, takes off her hat and ties the bow into her hair with a smile.
"Beautiful." Red hums. "Now come on, open it."
She nods and opens the box. Inside is a snowglobe, the glass orb is sat on a mechanical looking box, inside the ball is a little white bunny sat on a patch of forget-me-nots.
"It's so pretty thank you. And I'll definitely enjoy the chocolate." She chirps before kissing him quickly.
"Hey is also a night light, and this box has a secret puzzle compartment, I had a little help from my bro but I made sure it wasn't dangerous."
"Oh wow really!? That's even more awesome." She looks over it and finds a button that makes the whole thing glow a pretty green. "I'll be sure to solve the puzzle later ok?"
"Ye whenever ya wanna."
"I love you." She hums as she hugs him tightly.
"I love ya too hun bun." He hugs her back and scatters some little kisses over her face. "I have one more surprise for ya doll."
"Really?"
They back their gifts into their inventories then Red takes Kezi by the hand leading her out of the little town. He stops by the lake.
"Wait here for me ok."
She nods and he kisses her forehead before disappearing.
She looks around… it's gotten really dark by now. To her left is a building of some kind, what she can't tell. To her right is more forest and behind her is the town… but in front of her is the beautiful lake, it glistens in the moonlight, the stars sparkling over the water.
On the water from behind the building comes a light… a lantern… on a little boat, then she sees a familiar glow as the boat fully reveals its self. It's a lovely little row boat with her skeleton sat in it rowing towards her. She can't help but "awwww" and giggle.
He stops at the end of a tiny pier. "Come on my lady." He becons.
She scurries over and carefully sits in the boat with Reds help and he rows further into the lake.
"This is so romantic Red." She squeaks. "When did you plan all this?"
"Tbh not long before we left to go on holiday." He chuckles. "A certain bro of mine convinced me I had to do somethin' for ya today."
"Ye I can imagine Edge freaking out because we're improvising." She giggles.
"Ye. But the actual plan was all me, impressive right?"
"Very, It's been amazing. Thank you."
Red soon stops the boat and the two of them admire the nights sky as usual, they chat and make up constellations and stories.
Red looks over to Kezi as she smiles up at the sky. She gasps.
"Shooting star!"
He looks over to see the small light trail across the sky. They both make a wish each. Before smiling back at eachother.
"How'd I ever get a girl like you to like me??" He mumbles.
"How'd such a handsome, amazing skeleton ever fall in love with me?" She whispers back. "I love you so much." She sighs happily.
He tilts her head up and leans in pressing his teeth against her lips, he pulls her closer, as close as he can in the little boat as she rests her hands on his chest, his hand tangling into her hair as he deepens the passionate kiss. He breaks the kiss but only for a second as he goes back for more. "I… love ya… too…"he mumbles against her lips. His soul quietly purrs out for her as she hums into the kiss. She wraps her arms around him as she enjoys the smooches.
He breaks the kiss.
"Happy Anniversary Sweetheart." He purrs.
"H-happy Anniversary love."

Another (Furry) Mess
Stars: Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy
Summary: Stan finds himself in a world of trouble when an unexpected furry friend comes knocking on their door.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Well, he’s done it now.
Stan scurried into the house, holding the brim of his hat firmly in place. He thought nothing of those times he went behind Oliver’s back and continued to feed the woodland creature that lived behind their house. But coming home earlier today presented him with a strange present from his new furry friend: a tiny, shivering bundle of... *ahem* joy.
A baby raccoon.
He was speechless, reducing himself down to his typical flurried crying. He never imagined that this would be the end result of what seemed like a not bad idea at the time. He rushed into the house, taking off his derby and plucking the tiny creature out of his hair. It was fast asleep, probably not even old enough to open its eyes. He wrapped it in a lace doily on the side table in an attempt to keep it calm.
Oliver was sure to throttle him once he got home.
Stan took a few deep breaths as the raccoon now began to wiggle around. Its tiny beaded eyes stood against the characteristic eye mask on its face, and it stared straight up at the worried man about it.
“... hello, there,” Stan greeted shyly. “I’m... um... a friend of your mum’s.” He picked it up and began to hold it gently as if it was a real baby. It was certainly cute, but not something that needed to be in their house forever. After all, it was sure to grow up and grow into its instincts, which would make it an absolute nightmare to keep around. But what else could he do right now?
As he got distracted by the adorable animal, he heard a cab pull up and out of it came his friend. He panicked again as he searched for a way to hide it and delay the inevitable. “Okay buddy, let’s find you a nice quiet spot,” he said as if the raccoon could even respond. “Now you stay quiet, y’hear?”
He placed the baby in the cabinet under the kitchen sink just as Oliver walked in the house. He thought he was being sly until Oliver came into the kitchen much sooner than he thought.
“What are you doing, Stanley?” he asked suddenly, surprising Stan and causing him to bump his head squarely on the counter above him. Even in his daze, he knew he needed to close the door as soon as he could.
“Oh hey, Oliver,” he stammered, rubbing the now-sore top of his head. “Why’d you come home so early?”
“Oh, the boss let me go sooner today,” he answered, but his curiosity was piqued. “What were you doing down there?”
Stan swallowed the knot in his throat. He stood in front of the door, trying not to make it so obvious. “No good reason. Say, how about we try the new restaurant down the street for dinner tonight, wouldn’t that be a fun idea?” He laughed nervously. His ruse was cracking.
“Why are you stuttering? And you’re sweating like you have a fever of 100.” Oliver rested his hand on the counter, right at the sound of something being knocked over under the counter. He moved forward, and Stan moved away.
“Think about that restaurant idea, I’ll be upstairs.” He hurried away as quickly as he could, but there was no hiding from the sharp yell coming from the kitchen.
“STANLEY!” Oliver shouted from downstairs.
Stan tiptoed his way down. His secret had been uncovered and there was no backing out of this one.
He barely peeked his head around the corner when he responded, “... yes, Ollie?”
Oliver threw his hands up in a fit of frustration. “Don’t ‘yes, Ollie’ me. What’s this?” He held the now wide-awake raccoon in the palm of his hand.
Stan glanced between the two of them. “It’s a raccoon,” he answered curtly. He took two index fingers and traced the area around his eyes.
Oliver was speechless for a minute, staring off into the proverbial camera. “I know what a raccoon is, blockhead. But where did it come from??” He held the furry creature in his hand, ever so gently despite his frustration directed towards his completely moronic friend.
“Well, you see... okay, let’s start from the beginning. Remember the raccoon you told me to stop feeding?” He could see the anger building in his eyes, so Stan stammered over his words to continue. “Anyways, I came home today and wouldn’t you know, it became a mother! And, I guess, she thought we would be the best ones to take care of it.”
“The best ones to take care of it,” Oliver repeated. “Stanley, this thing needs its real mother! I want you to take it back where it came from right now.”
In his heart, Stan knew that the baby needed its real mother and to be out in its natural home. But he also knew there was a chance she wouldn’t come back for it, and it would be left to fend for itself. His humanitarian side caved in.
“Can I reason with you for a second?”
Oliver huffed. “You can try.”
Stan took the baby from his friend’s hands. “Ollie, look at it. If we put it out now, it won’t have anywhere to go. Who could be so cruel to a creature this small?” He held the baby in both hands, while the baby lifted its head up to see the other man better. Those small, beady eyes were piercing, and they pierced right through Oliver’s previous plans.
He sighed. “Okay. But just until it’s big enough to go back on its own. It’s not a permanent thing!”
He didn’t hear the rest of the argument. All Stan heard was that their little friend was here to stay.
“Do you hear that, little buddy?” he asked with a smile. “We’re going to take good care of you and give you lots of love and food and--” His voice trailed off as he took the baby upstairs, and Oliver shook his head in resigned contentment.
“Here’s another nice mess you got me into,” he whispered under his breath.
(Two months later)
“Laughing Gravy!” Stan shouted from the back porch. “Laughing Gravy, come get your dinner!”
The now much-bigger raccoon came tottering up to the porch. What started out as a temporary arrangement now looked a little bit more permanent. Still, “Laughing Gravy” lived out in his natural habitat.
Oliver told him not to name it, but he just couldn’t help himself.
#stan laurel#oliver hardy#laurel and hardy#blurbs#to go on the record: i do not condone keeping wild animals as pets#but i wrote something like this for a previous pair and it fit just as well with these two#enjoy!

At the end of a Pier
So this is super late as I’m unorganised and life has been really difficult/busy for me recently (being out of work, starting a new job but then quitting that for another, family stuff, health) But @radical-rad1986 and I have did a a private swap for the ESS 2019. I really struggled with what to write, I had some great ideas over the holiday but then time has passed and I was thinking about the piece I wrote about the campfire. I wanted to write something that continued from that and Hitomi’s final day in Gaea. There’s a lot of reflections, some Merle & Hitomi chatting and a little sorrow in this piece. I hope you like it ^_^
Word Count - 1,815
It was quieter down the far end of the dock, away from the markets and for that Hitomi was glad. The chaos of the past weeks, months, however long she’d been here had finally taken its toll. From the point of view of an adventurer or explorer it was nice to treat her final days in Gaea like a holiday, free to relax and enjoy everything Astoria had to offer.
She sat at the end of a pier, her legs dangling off so she could swing them backwards and forwards. She tried for a moment to match the rhythm of the small waves underneath. But that was slow and so she allowed her feet to swing freely, matching her breaths instead to the ebb and flow of the water.
The only company she had was a silent fisherman and a large white and almost gold bird which circled above and reminded her of gulls at home. Come to think of it, she tilted her head to the side, a hand stretching out to follow the path of gull tracing in the air and following it’s flight path as it circled, then landed a few feet from her. The bird’s wings reminded her of Van’s wings, a feather fell from the bird and landed next to her. Her hand slowly dropped to meet it and stroked the soft down, she recalled a sleepover with Yukari where they’d ended up having a pillow fight. She knew it was such a cliche but they’d enjoyed it, numerous feathers similar to the one she now clutched had fallen round the room. Her brother teasing her endlessly about it the following day.
As she held the feather she closed her eyes and thought of Van’s lips, his kiss as his wings wrapped round her comforting her in a soft cocoon. Then she thought of kissing Allen in the rain, the strange pull she felt in that moment almost magnetic and finally she thought of Amano. These were stepping stones to her reality which formed such a beautiful dream. Though her heart felt heavy at having to return home she knew that much like her grandmother she would be forever grateful for the adventure that the spirits had allowed her to have.
Van’s kiss felt like rain, summer’s rain where you don’t mind if you get wet or if your clothes are drenched and make-up runs down your face like rivers. It’s too hot out and there’s cicadas in the trees and birds flying ahead, the sun just peaking on the horizon before it dips down behind sky-scrapers. The rumble of the metro but above the dark clouds have gathered and suddenly the heaven’s open and trapped in the rain storm it’s as if nothing else in the world matters or exists.
“Hey whatcha doing?” Merle asked shrilly and begun scratching her ears.
Hitomi jumped and spun around to see the cat girl sat behind her, “Merle! Do you have to do that!”
Merle barely paid any attention, “Why are you out here all on your own?”
Hitomi angrily crossed her arms across her chest, annoyed that the peace had been broken.
“I wanted to be alone.” She confessed.
“Why?”
“Why do you always ask so many questions?”
Merle shrugged and sat down beside her, her tail swaying involuntarily back and forth.
“I’m curious,” she licked her paw and begun to clean behind her ear.
“Curiosity killed the cat didn’t you know that?”
Merle stopped cleaning her ear, her eyes were wide and when she didn’t blink Hitomi sighed and added, “It’s a saying back where I’m from.”
Then Merle did something unexpected, she rest her head on Hitomi’s shoulder, “I get why you wanna sit here, it’s because it’s peaceful right?” She asked quietly.
Hitomi placed a hand on Merle’s knee, “Yes Merle, because it’s quiet, because it gives me a place to both think and be free from thought at the same time.”
Merle sat up pondering what Hitomi had just said and then nodded, “I understand.”
Together they watched the swell of the water beneath them, the ocean looked so cool Hitomi could have easily jumped in but she knew it would be time for her to leave soon.
Dryden was also taking leave of Astoria, it seemed her ending was also the ending of the fellowship they had built and within a few hours she could be sat back in her bedroom listening to the radio. The thought of having to go back to a normal life scared her but she also felt excited and like all the things that had caused her concern at home, all the things that had frightened her, none of it seemed too much for her. What she had learnt and overcome during her time in Gaea meant she knew she could face the challenges that lay ahead.
“Don’t tell Van but I’ve grown rather fond of you.”
Merle smiled, “Same.”
“I know when I get up and turn around, that I have to leave. I’m not sure I’m ready yet,” Hitomi admitted.
Merle nuzzled into her and held her hand in her paw, “Then let’s sit here for a while.”
And so they sat in silence not li
“Winter, what’s winter like here?” Hitomi asked suddenly remembering the snow up in the mountains and her breath hanging in the air.
“Why’d you ask?”
Hitomi shrugged, “I like to enjoy places in all seasons, if I know what Gaea is like in Winter I can day dream about it when i’m home and it’ll give me something to look forward to for the next time i’m here.”
“Well,” Merle begun and looked thoughtful, “Winter is peaceful, here in Astoria it’s different but in land the snow falls heavy and covers the world in a glittery carpet. There’s all kinds of animals which have a winter camouflage and there’s red berries that taste so sweet. Winters can be long, daylight short, there’s purple flowers that come up all winter in the woodland and give off a sweet scent. There’s markets where there’s plenty of music and campfires, singing and dancing. People try to make the most of each season you know, Winter is a good time to be close to family and friends. People play on ice lakes, they dance…”
Hitomi was enchanted by Merle’s description of Winter, it reminded her so much of home, “Ice-skating?”
Merle raised her eyebrows, “Dancing on ice, we call it ice-skating.”
“Ice-skating,” Merle repeated.
“What’s your favourite part of Winter?”
“When the sunlight first touches fresh snow and the world is silent apart from the swoop of wings from an owl or the early morning birdsong. When there’s no prints in the snow so you know you’ll be the first to leave your mark. Those purple flowers are closed at night and when the sun touches them the warmth awakens them and with that the smell. It’s enchanting.”
Hitomi felt tears well in her eyes at the description Merle painted of Winter, suddenly she found herself missing home terribly and enjoying the build up to the holidays, Ice-skating with Yukari and good food with her family in restaurants with wide fire places.
She closed her eyes and forgot where she was for a moment, she could have been home waiting for the train, the sound of gulls rocking her into a sense of security and familiarity. A sting of homesickness in her belly made her feel more certain she was doing the right thing in returning and helped to ease the pain of leaving.
"Hitomi!" A voice called, she turned and saw Allen stood at the opposite end of the pier looking as gallant as he did the first day they met. Ever the perfect knight, she was sure Yukari would fall in love from the description alone.
Allen had that same smile on his face, a smile that told her everything would be okay. It was warm like the taste of citrus fruit in May.
He didn't have to say anything else, just the look on his face and the way he held his hand out to her told her it was time to go.
The past 24 hours had been perfect, the stories they told round the fireplace last night would stay with her forever, a sense of calm and tranquillity washed over her now.
She took Allen's hand, as he helped lift her to her feet she smiled remembering their first encounter and how grateful she was for him.
"Is Van not coming?" She asked suddenly.
"Of course, they're all waiting to say goodbye."
Hitomi nodded knowing the action was more for her sake than his, it was an affirmation that she was doing the right thing.
Merle brushed up against her legs and then ran off ahead of the two of them and into the woods.
"I know you'll want a few moments alone with Van, but I wanted to say goodbye without prying eyes too."
Allen brushed her hair, Hitomi, despite what had passed found it hard not to blush under his stare. But now she looked up at him with admiration, "Thank you Allen for everything.”
Allen bowed his head and pressed a soft kiss on her forehead, he lingered for a moment and when he pulled away he said, “And thank you Hitomi for teaching me a valuable lesson.”
They walked through the woods in silence listening to the birdsong which accompanied them, great flowers were in bloom, orange and red bright like the sun. Hitomi took everything in, the memories of blood shed slowly fading.
Somewhere in the trees she heard chatter and laughter, the friends who had come to say goodbye and there ahead of them was Van leaning against a tree. Hitomi thought he gave the impression of a man trying to look casual but he could see in his eyes the deep sorrow and uncertainty. As the two reached him Allen passed her hand to his silently and then left them alone to join the others.
There was a moment, several heartbeats where they stood in silence facing one another hand in hand just waiting for the other to speak.
"I'll never forget you," she said as tears welled in her eyes.
All Van could say was her name as he reached up to stroke her cheek, wiping a tear away as he did so.
He leant in to kiss her, when his lips met hers the fear melted away, she could smell grass in Spring and her heart felt light as she kissed him in return.
When they parted their foreheads remained pressed together, both teary eyed but both smiling, almost laughing.
“Even when I’m old, I won’t forget you, I’ll write every word of our tale down - once upon a time there was a girl and a Prince…”

Ragnarsons on instagram
because we all know they’d be insta thoties, no printers only fax
Bjorn:
bio is just a vague mixture of words like “entrepreneur, adventurer, leader” and changes every few weeks
totally that guy that gets all his captions from brainyquote.com
sponsored posts and brand deals
90% of his pics are subtle flexes ngl
never uses geo tag bc privacy but always posting travel pics
so private and vague that no one? actually knows? what he does? like it’s obvious he got money but how? his job and/or lack of one becomes the new internet conspiracy of the week
Ubbe:
barely ever posts but has the most followers
50% family and friend pics, 40% health food pics, and 10% shirtless pics all with dad jokes as captions
low key popular in gardening circles bc he grows some of the food he eats himself and sometimes posts his small but impressive vegetable garden
tries to reply to comments and dms every once in a while but not often bc wow...some of ya’ll wildin
it’s either “how are your cucumbers growing?” or “stick that cucumber in my ***** dilf” and he just can’t deal with that whiplash all the time
somehow ends up in one of those weird buzzfeed articles like ‘hottest lumbersexual men of instagram’
Hvitserk:
never responds to comments but is in the dms like it’s his second job
if there isn’t at least one boomerang of the food did he even eat?
everything from expensive restaurant meals to 3am taco bell gets the same excited hd zoom in treatment
somehow at every party in town? gets invited everywhere and is in every picture
prank videos that end in him running from one or several of his brothers, has gotten Ivar with the classic ‘wrap everything you own in tin foil’ gag 3 times now
memes
broke his no comments streak when someone jokingly asked “do you eat pussy like that?” on a vid of him slurping some noodles and within .2 seconds he replied “yes, do you want a demonstration?” then muted notifications while everyone lost their shit
Sigurd:
has his soundcloud, bandcamp, AND youtube channel plugged in his bio
probably had the youtube channel first and mostly uses insta to promote that channel and his music
most vids are him just chilling in the woods with whatever instrument he can find, usually his guitar, and people kinda start to wonder if he even has a house cause he’s never inside...like ever
sometimes sings, sometimes answers questions (sarcastically), always plays in what his fans jokingly call “violent woodland fae genre”
regularly recognized in the streets as “singing woods guy”
Ivar:
get’s almost all his captions from rap
people mainly follow for the aesthetic and the fits (and the face of course) he’s fine and everyone knows it
expensive clothes, but nothing gaudy
basic insta fuckboi behavior but with class™, regularly goes out with Hvitserk and is in most of his stories
on the down low might be dating a model?? it’s very hush hush
only follows Sigurd to like all the rude comments people leave on his posts “i’m supporting him in the most effective way possible: aggressive criticism”

woodland creatures tour - day 8 (falls church)
finally got around to starting the final journal. life picks back up so quickly for me when i return from going anywhere, really, so it’s hard to stick to little projects like this. but i probably could have benefited from writing this sooner after the actual last day of tour haha. it’s funny how we only leave for a week or so but it feels like our lives shift so drastically during that time. it really does take time to snap back into reality and accept normalcy.
after a good night of bullshitting until super late (we tried to put on hot ones around 2:00 am but all passed out shortly after) we grabbed coffee and breakfast at coffeeology (i THINK that’s the name) in greensboro. we stopped at a shop literally across the street from the venue we played last year, new york pizza. seeing that place again reminded us of playing to literally our tourmates destination dimension and maybe like 3 other people in the room, versus the couple dozen we played to last night. the main band that played the gig that night literally sat outside the entire show with their friends and only came inside for when they had to play. it was disheartening, to say the least. this time, we didn’t play to a crowd that was there for us, but we played to so many more people who actually stayed inside to watch us.
i wish i could remember this drive, i didn’t have any work to do so i think this was the day i bought untitled goose game and i was playing it a little bit haha. we listened to some music and just enjoyed the trek to our last gig on this run. of course, we started to hit traffic as we approached falls church, which is in the DC area for anyone not familiar. however, we were still making okay time. we could make a detour to drop our bags at the hotel in vienna, get food, and then run our dual band cover of uneasy hearts with pulses. forgot to mention this in the jacksonville journal lmao, i approached kevin with this idea for the last show of tour super casually and we did end up deciding as a whole to go through with it!
the hotel in vienna was such a strange spot, but it was kind of cool? we stayed at the vienna wolf trap hotel hahaha. all of the decor was SO DATED but it was still pretty okay. the guy at the desk was nice, we somehow got on the topic that we were a band on tour rand he gave us late check-in for free! ended up not needing it. but it’s the thought that counts haha. we arrive to the venue and jaime’s girlfriend rebecca is there to greet us :’) poor girl drove their RV all the way down to virginia alone, and that thing drives slowly. but then that meant jaime could ride back up to jersey with her which was good.
it is insane how at home we feel at falls church. i guess everyone south of maryland is just way fucking cooler than the northeast lmao, but it’s like pulling up to play somewhere at home in jersey and running into old friends. i can’t get over that we have that in a state hundreds of miles from home. it was good to see familiar faces and be back at the vfw. our friends’ band to michigan, with love was also on the gig, and our newer friends in science penguin joined us on the show as well! it was an all-around homie fest. i rolled up to the venue with the remainder of the trulys i purchased the night before, and shoved the box in the fridge haha. i was ready to just chillll.
because we have played here a handful of times, it is also now tradition to walk across the parking lot and go get korean fried chicken at the restaurant next door. it fucking sucks, we always arrive just in time to eat before doors and i normally can’t eat jack shit because of fried/spicy food being horrible for my voice. i ordered bibimbap and then 12 wings to go, for after the show lmao. or a snack after we play!! but i ended up forgetting to FUCKING eat them AND they just sat out overnight in the van so they were toast. goddamnit. i think the restaurant is literally just called bbq fried chicken, the way they fry their chicken is just perfect. the sauces are all delicious and everything besides that on the menu is also tasty.
i wanted so badly to break my last set of tour curse. it’s definitely a self-imposed, silly, superstitious thing, but my last set of tour iS ALWAYS HOT GARBAGE. i always for sure mess up. and this was probably the best last set of tour i’ve had but still not my best performance all of tour haha. i got lost the bridge of murder mountain and couldn’t hear my bandmates for some reason? fucking embarrassing but!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i cannot stress enough how much fun it was. it truly was. fucking, we’re about to play pixelated and i’m trying to give my SHPIEL about not being a JERK musician and i hear the sounds of “smooth” by carlos santana featuring rob thomas faintly playing through my in-ears. i rip them off and i’m like, what the fuck is going on LMAO. surprise, the pulses. gang were behind it, and tyler, taylor and kevin come dancing up to the stage. i was DEAD. we never do last day of tour pranks so we were fuuuully unprepared hahaha. it was so funny. my meme now takes on a whole new meaning!!
most importantly this show felt like such a fun celebration of tour. pulses., as they did all tour, hyped us up during almost every song and went off for synapse fires. we are too fucking lucky to have them as friends. they really helped make every set and every show feel worth the hours of travel and sometimes stress. to look out and see their faces in the crowd and singing the words uplifted us each night. it’s unfair that we live so far apart. it’s like how they say your soulmate could be literally anywhere in the world but you won’t know until you go look??? it’s like that but with finding supportive friends. i’m not sure if we’ve stressed this enough but this tour gave us strength to keep going as musicians, due in part to their friendship. we always joked like how the fuck we’re supposed to just go on not playing shows together or seeing each other all the time but it really does suck lmao. i was in my feelings in both a good and bad way, soooo i immediately scurried off the stage to go grab a truly the second we were done HAHA
it’s always so sad to watch your friends play their last set of tour, too. well moreso bittersweet! but you know that it’ll be your last time seeing them play for a while. i enjoyed every single minute. i love watching them play hometown shows, too. halfway through we jumped on stage to do the uneasy hearts cover, completely unrehearsed, and i’d say we did a pretty damn good job. such a fun way to send off the woodland creatures tour. i had always wanted to do something like this, where two bands play on stage at once (holla me versus i nd the artwork of). the energy the whole song was so infectious, it was fun to see people in the crowd go off too. also, fucking KRIS KHUNACHAK shot this video with TWO ANGLES holding both his cameras at the same time. i still can’t get over that.
youtube
i love that pulses. played you already know as their closer, it was the perfect way to wrap up their set and the best bookend to the setlist they chose. kevin would get on the mic every night and speak to the crowd, dude is just really good at being a performer and resonating with people. in jacksonville he sat down and everyone followed his lead haha. it was fun to dance one last time with everyone as we watched pulses. kill it before the tour came to an official end. we then gathered outside to take group pictures. it’s the part you don’t wanna get to, because it signals farewells in the near future, but we took some really great ones.
post-gig taco bell plans were foiled, but someone recommended the silver dollar diner nearby. diners outside of jersey are normally horrifying but i trusted the people we were with. we piled back in our vehicles and rolled 20 heads deep to the diner. it was actually a really sick diner with tons of vegan dishes and pretty tasty food. i got chicken noodle soup, red wine and an ice cream sundae because i am a freak of nature. we ate up like 3 tables and sat altogether, just bitching about having to return to real life the following monday. but also, trying to plan the next time we would see each other. already!! and!! talking about doing more shows together. we try to work with different people all the time but there are a select few bands we would tour with or gig with again and again and again and pulses. are one of them. after how much fun this run was it’s pretty hard to imagine not doing this again. it just... makes sense. so much sense. and it feels wrong to not do it again lmao.
goodbyes were bittersweet. we huddled in the parking lot by our van to say goodnight and see ya later, one by one. fuckin, tyler is moving to nashville very soon so we all probably won’t see him for a hot minute :’----------( thankfully everyone else really isn’t that far if we planned a weekend trip to meet halfway or if we wanted to make the trip out to each other, thank god!!! i don’t know what i would do if i couldn’t always have a part of this tour with me, somehow or some way.
afterword
was thinking of adding a lengthy epilogue but it’s essentially just me openly sobbing in the van the entire ride home hahaha. you’d think that every single time it would get easier to come home but it doesn’t. i know why touring impacts me as much as it does emotionally, but when the bittersweet acceptance of coming home pours over into tears like it does, i feel kinda silly. i’m sure that there are musicians who are constantly gigging that would love nothing more than to be home more, and i know that if i was in their shoes i would come to dread touring, too.
i really, truly wish i was in a place, or that my bandmates and i, were in a place to tour more often, but for now we have what we have. and that’s okay. i want to share something beautiful our friend charlene posted today that deeply moved me:
This is the moment. I’ve made it.
People always ask me “what are you gonna do when you’ve made it?” I need you to understand something; I’ve already made it. I am living out my dreams. It’s not easy and obviously I would only hope that’s I will continue to grow, to reach bigger goals, to push the limits. But I’ve already made it. This is the moment. I won’t let myself miss out on the beauty of life that’s right in front of me because I’m too worried about something that may or may not come tomorrow. This is the moment.

According to the dictionary, American cuisine is "the national cooking of the United States, characterized by its emphasis on fresh, local ingredients and dishes." This definition could not be more accurate, as the food that is popular in America is typically made with fresh and local ingredients. In fact, much of what we consider "American cuisine" comes from countries like Italy and France. However, because America is such a vast country with so many different regions, there are also many unique American dishes.
Some of the most popular American dishes include barbecue meat, pizza, macaroni and cheese, hamburgers, and chicken Alfredo. These dishes all rely on fresh ingredients that have been locally sourced. For example, barbecue meats are often made with pork or beef that has been barbecued over wood smoke. Pizza is typically made with dough that is made from flour, water, olive oil and yeast. Macaroni and cheese is a dish that consists of noodles that are cooked in milk and cheese until they become creamy. Hamburger patties are also often made with ground beef that has been seasoned with salt, pepper and other spices. Chicken Alfredo is a dish that typically contains pasta noodles that have been sautéed in butter, garlic and Parmesan cheese. Wraps are also commonly made with tortillas that are filled with meat, vegetables or other ingredients.
