Yuhua had been raised to be a good person. 

Don’t curse too much; don’t offend people; don’t overstep. Don’t be overly arrogant in an unironic manner; don’t destroy things; don’t be excessively greedy and selfish. Don’t challenge authority; don’t be ungrateful; don’t disturb the natural order of things. Don’t stick out too much; don’t be lazy and spare the effort; don’t make yourself too loud. Don’t strive too far from your role in life; don’t achieve too much; don’t keep every good thing to yourself. Don’t hurt others; don’t ignore others in need; don’t agree with what everyone else considers evil. Don’t be too happy; don’t be unacceptably ignorant and become a liability; don’t drag everyone else down. Don’t degrade yourself in public, and don’t degrade the public whole. 

These were the core tenets of his upbringing, the unspoken rules of society, and he followed them. Yes, he bent them as he needed, but—That was life. That was “living,” to him. A worthless, “nobody” child like himself could only play by the rules.

—Until his world was flipped on his axis and, in “Wonderland,” he met Floyd.

Where Yuhua only had the meager courage to bend rules, Floyd went about breaking them entirely. The behavioral standards that Yuhua had been held to since childhood went totally ignored in the clever mind that hid behind mismatched, downturned eyes. Adults chided Yuhua to be both “excellent” and “normal” at once— Floyd was simply “excellent” and “out of line,” and he was happier for it.

It should have, by all means, been a point of hatred for Yuhua. He should have been filled with hatred and disgust at seeing this flagrant rule-breaker; he should have been absolutely intolerant of this unpredictable brute who broke the careful, weak balance of his life. He should have been bitterly jealous of this painfully honest young man who felt no need to suppress his true opinions until only shadows of them could be recalled in the name of fake personas.

But, instead, Yuhua found himself charmed by these qualities opposite of his. To his own frustration, devastation, and incoherent confusion, this irregular tempo that Floyd marched to began to accompany his own. That initially frightening, wild melody of the eel’s life became enjoyable and even comforting with time.

That unrestrained happiness, too—Yuhua wanted to see it, and have it, and share it. Joys and sorrow, anger and forgiveness; he wanted to experience this kind of emotional “living,” instead of shakily “surviving” with the tatters of his mental fortitude as he had been before. He wanted to give love and receive love to the ridiculous extent he’d never been able to.

He… For the first time in his life, he wanted to break the rules. 

At a certain point, Yuhua—never quite able to become a “good person” as the world wanted him to be, only able to pretend he was—would have to face the facts: some kind of affection, some kind of favor, had filled his meaningless heart; some kind of feeling had corrupted the tenets that held his patchwork self together.
