Oooh how about an AU where Hartley’s part of Team Flash from the start 👀

I have soooo many thoughts on this kind of AU. Some of which may or may not be contradictory. :D

So first and foremost, I do not see Hartley agreeing with the pipeline. Either he convinces the team not to go in that direction at all or it becomes the sticking point that makes him leave the team when it becomes clear the pipeline isn't going to be the short term solution he was assured it would be.

Hartley does leave the team at some point regardless of the pipeline. I could see this either as EoWells swaying Hartley to his side and pitting him against Barry only for Hartley to learn the truth of his friend/lover in the worst way, or him splitting from the team due to being unwilling to work with Harrison anymore over his growing number of secrets.

I really like the idea that if Hartley still knew about the flaw ahead of time and that's what splits him from the team, that he turns whistleblower about it and goes to Iris. He may not trust EoWells anymore but he's grown to trust Barry and, through Barry, Iris too. It'd be good for Iris too to get something big to her name early that has nothing to do with the Flash (that they know of anyway) and I could see it spurring Mason to be more respectful of Iris and give her an in for picking up Mason's investigation into Wells when it gets him killed.

While Hartley would split from the team during S1, I think S2 he'd be firmly back in with the team. It'd be awkward at first and take time for ruffled feathers over S1 events to settle, but he'd be a permanent part of the team going forward.

Romance wise, I'd either want him to meet Roderick but not necessarily start dating him yet, meet David Singh and get to have his canon love interest from the comics, or have a belligerent UST thing with Cisco that settles into dating eventually (but maybe they both casually date others first). Admittedly, Hartmon is my preference but I could see any of these working out really well. (Or I could go even more AU and do pre-Barry/Hartley...)

Ronnie and Hartley are friends. Which probably bewildered Cisco until he and Hartley begrudgingly became friends too.

Hartley would at least talk about having a younger sister, if not have Jerrie show up. (If she didn't appear in S1, then she'd definitely show up in S2.)

Hartley has pet rats! They are cute and he's so soft for them. :D

S2 events would have Hartley's parents reaching out to him and the struggle there for reconciling with them. Hartley wants it very much, but not to the point of compromising on certain things his parents need to keep working on if they're serious about wanting their son back. I can see him pointing out that them trying to be less homophobic is great, but he can't trust it if they aren't going to work on not being transphobic or otherwise queerphobic.

The Rogues! I can see him teaming up with Snart in S1 perhaps, making his choice to side back with Team Flash in S2 rockier with a more Rogues focused S2. Snart wants Rathaway's skills back on his team and Hartley is running out of polite ways to say 'no'.

I've got a lot of ideas for this kind of AU, really. And it's one I very much want to write at some point.

A little Hartmon drabble after the cut.

Hartley paced the floor of the small room. This would never work. This would only hurt...

"Cisco, really, we don't have to do this." Hartley stopped pacing and turned to face the other man, before quickly looking away. It felt like his face had just gotten hit with the full force of the sun, heat slipping in like a rushing high tide across his cheeks. So, his fiancé looked hot. What else was new? Still, he was flustered by the freshly pressed suit. The cufflinks of pure gold. The perfectly slicked-back hair. Oh god, they were really doing this.

"Hartley, don't worry about it. Really." There was a pause from Cisco that caused Hartley to glance back. "How do I look?"

Cisco was nervous, that was clear. As CEO of Ramon Industries, he had to appear confident and self-assured. And he was. Just...not in this moment. Neither of them were. This could be a make or break moment for Cisco's reputation. It scared Hartley. He knew what it was like to be stripped of your legacy and ostracized. He didn't want that for Cisco.

He walked over and gently cupped Cisco's face. There was a slight stinging in his eyes that he fought off the best he could. Still, one tear fell softly on his cheek. "I could ruin you." It barely came out as more than a whisper.

Cisco gave a weak smile and wiped the tear quickly away. "And I want you to do it."

There was a soft knock on the door that made them instinctively flinch apart. Cisco's assistant peered her head in the door. "Mr. Ramon, they're ready for you."

"Thank you." The door closed with a click as the assistant left. Both men let out a soft sigh.

"Come on." Cisco grabbed Hartley's hand and tugged him to the door. He took in a deep breath and let it out as an exaggerated sigh. "I'm ready to show the world who I am."

"I think you have already done that," Hartley mumbled as he turned Cisco to face him and planted a kiss to his forehead. Hartley's timid smile matched Cisco's. "I'm ready."

Cisco pushed the main door open, light suddenly blazing into the dark room. The cocky smile that he put on for the world took over his face. They walked into the auditorium, hand in hand as the cheers swelled.

Mr. Ramon was on display. And beside him, Hartley put on a smile. It was fake and he was rightfully scared. But he knew that things would be better than last time. After all, this time he had someone to stand beside.

Nah, Hartley's nothing like Harry. Maybe in the comics, but def not in the show. He acts more like a grown-up Malfoy (esp with his rich background)...tho ofc his relationship with his parents isn't at all like Malfoy's. But I digress

How I feel about this character: Lukewarm. I liked her in s3 as a villain, but I never liked how they tried to make her a hero without so much as an apology to Iris. I don’t hate her, she has her moments, but...ehh. I’ve never understood how she’s such a fan favorite, especially over Iris—her powers are really cool and as I said, she definitely has her funny/sweet moments, but still

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Caitlin, Cisco, and Ralph! Also if she’d actually apologized to Iris ever, then Iris would be here too 💞

My unpopular opinion about this character: tbh I’ve never much liked Frost as her own character? I preferred when KF was just Caitlin

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: If they were gonna make her a separate person from Caitlin, the first thing they should've done is have her apologize to Iris (and Cecile, both directly, because why tf did Caitlin apologize to Joe for what she did to Cecile?? And with no mention of Iris, moreover??). There should’ve been tension there for a while...and then the bachelorette episode could’ve been the resolution of that tension (with no petty digs from Frost to Iris because seriously wtf?? The nerve and audacity?? You assisted in her attempted murder last year, you have no right to needle her like that!)

How I feel about this character: I have a love-hate relationship with him 😂 his snark is entertaining in s1 but ehh I still didn’t really like him...but in s2, he's very sweet and piques my interest. Then I was mad that they made him mean again post-Crisis for no reason, but...he had a cool aesthetic (unfortunately, he still insulted/devalued Cisco 💀 also unfortunately, the show proved how much they didn’t care about his sexuality by giving him a sexy-lamp boyfriend with no personality). And I liked him in s9—it felt like they finally settled into how to write him well, and even Roderick, poor guy, finally got some personality. Just a smidge, though

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Roderick, sometimes Cisco (the s2 version of Hartley). Also I'm intrigued by the Singhaway ship (comics canon) 👀 ofc the show destroyed that possibility by having Singh be married from s1 onwards, but if they'd kept him single...👀

My non-romantic OTP for this character: His sister, Jerrie (comics canon) 💞 also Cisco (I don't ship them all the time 😂). ALSO Wally and Linda (comics canon)

My unpopular opinion about this character: Him insulting Cisco isn’t funny or cute and never was ✋ and any Hartmon fic (romantic or platonic) needs to start off with an apology for that (either one directly stated or implied)

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish he’d gotten to keep his s2 characterization (without reconciling with his terrible parents), and that he’d gotten to be more present in the show and met/befriended Wally and Linda. The post-Crisis retcon never happened in my mind idc

Hi, anon! Sorry it took me a while to answer, I had to try a couple times to make sense of this particular AU, haha.

Is there a fic concept you have that you'd like to just explain and share because you're not sure you'll ever write it? If so, what is it?

Maybe I’m being overly optimistic but I still have hope I’ll be able to share ALL of my current WIPs eventually, lol. The only one I don’t actually think I’ll end up writing, and I’ve talked about it on here before, is my Genie AU, which was a mix of canon and AU where Barry is still the Flash but Len is a genie. Putting this under a read more because it got a bit long.

The idea originally came to me because I love genie/djinn lore but I’m not a huge fan of ‘The master falls in love with the genie and in the end he sets them free’ because IMO it doesn’t matter if your masters are kind or cruel, they’re still trying to master you. So I knew I wanted Barry to break Len free of the lamp in the very beginning, without giving in to the temptation of making any wishes, just because it’s the right thing to do, or maybe even because this is a Barry who went through a version of Flashpoint and is wary of whatever alteration of reality Len is offering. Meanwhile, Len is the one who is wary of freedom and doesn’t see why his purpose in life has to be ruined just because Barry doesn’t have any self-control. But we know how stubborn Barry can be when he genuinely thinks he’s doing the right thing so he frees Len from the lamp and *that* is when things turn to shit, lol. Len immediately starts decaying and comes to Barry being basically like, you broke it you buy it. Fix it or I’ll burn your house down with your family inside. So much for trying to do the right thing.

So yeah, the first part of the fic would be Len being pretty much the world’s worst house guest and trying to understand how the human world works now that he has to live in it full time thanks to SOMEONE, while Barry and his team (which in this fic was going to be Caitlin, Cisco and Hartley, with Hartmon as a side pairing because Cisco got tricked into making a wish before the lamp was destroyed and now he and Hartley have a baby and must raise it despite very much hating the sight each other, or do they) try to get information on the lamp, and the curse, and djinns, and try to unearth the mystery of Len’s origins. And of course during that time forced into close quarters Len and Barry were gonna fall in love^^ Not that they’d ever admit to it, especially not Len. There would be tropes galore, such as being forced to take care of Cisco and Hartley’s dumb baby together, or Barry teaching Len to read, but that one was gonna be a slooooow burn, mostly because I had plans for this version of Len to be somewhere on the asexual spectrum? Or at least it was gonna be strongly implied because humans were always just kinda there to him, and in any case he wouldn’t sleep with someone who kept him in a lamp when they weren’t using him.

I had plans to insert a bunch of references to Len’s canon appearances, including the fact that Barry would’ve found the lamp during a robbery of the Kahndaq Dynasty expo at the Central City museum, and Len was going to blackmail him into forging a new identity for him (as opposed to destroying his records like on the show). So, Leonard Snart was going to be his fake human name, although most characters just referred to him as Cold. Cold was literally constantly scheming in the first half of the fic and one of those schemes was gonna get Joe killed and force Cold into taking responsibility and sacrifice himself to bring Joe back. And that was gonna be the end of Part 1 because. Pain.

Part 2 was gonna start after a time jump and Barry still having no idea that Len is dead because, again. Pain. He thinks Len just took off, even though he promised him he wouldn’t leave. Joe never told Barry the truth because Joe never tells his kids the important things (yes, I’m still salty he told Iris her mother was dead, why do you ask). Meanwhile, Len has been sulking in the afterlife for four mortal years and the only people he’s got to talk to are some of his former Masters (namely Lisa and Ray) and Death (Sara, of course, who else), who he eventually tries to make a deal with: Undo the spell. She can have Joe West back. So Death is like, well, okay, that was dark even for you but if you really want to go through with this, do it yourself because I’m not going to do some insignificant mortal’s dirty work, I’ll give you one day because you entertain me. And Len sets out to do just that but of course he can’t, because once he’s back on Earth he immediately runs into Iris and tries to use her to get to her father but the thing is that Len/Cold HAS changed during the time he spent with Barry. He never meant to, but he did. So he basically just tells Joe to have a nice life and resigns himself to leave and go back to his little corner of eternity.

But not before Barry sees him.

And then—well admittedly I hadn’t really written too much past that point, haha, but I’m sure you can guess that Barry is furious with Joe and finds a way to go to the afterlife to get Len back, and I guess it turns into the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice for a while, although I would never give my boys an unhappy ending so I did plan for the fic to have a happy ending and have Len and Barry leave the afterlife together. However, it was by that point that I realized this would take waaay too many chapters and way too much worldbuilding to write this story in a satisfying manner so I got discouraged and gave up XD But yeah, that was basically the whole plan for this giant project that will probably never happen, although I guess you never know!

Well I’m not a big shipper naturally tbh, unless I see undeniable chemistry and/or suggestive scenes between characters, I’m probably just going to ship what was canon— that was until I fully entered tumblr and related fandom spaces. Now I see ships everywhere. Especially with Ao3.

Ao3 has made me ship soooo many ships, the OG being Superarrow/Kariver

More recently tho: Coldflash (my current OTP), Snowest, Hartmon, and I personally prefer them as platonic but I definitely support them as a ship— Barrisco

Also as much as I hate to admit it— I understand Eobarry and why people ship it (One sidedly it’s basically canon) but I still do not like it and definitely don’t ship it. (Ok but how tf could it ever be two sided guys— it’s also creepy af) nvm I’m not jumping into that rabbit hole today.

1: More merchandise. I finally have a STAR labs sweatshirt and it is one of my most treasured possessions— but I wish there was more options, I wish we could get Ciscos vibe glasses or smth like that (I know we can on ebay and stuff, but it’d be nice if the CW or WB put in merch effort) Ah. The pain of smaller fandoms (and I say this in relation to my other big fandoms being Star Wars and the MCU)

2: Less discourse/hate. I’ve calibrated my space here on tumblr to be on the positive side of the fandom but I remember when I couldn’t look at comment sections without seeing at least 10 hate comments (from other fans may I add). Idk maybe it’s not as bad now. I also notice this was primarily around the topic of shipping; specifically around Westallen vs Snowbarry, I saw some pretty bad stuff on both sides. Personally I just believe in ship and let ship. If you don’t like a ship then that’s fine; but don’t attack the people who do. But like I said; maybe it’s not as bad now. (Sry that was a long one lol)

3: M o r e w h u m p— including taking place in later seasons; 9x4 has so much potential and I really want someone to take advantage of it (I say, knowing full well that I could write it— I can’t though; The Bad Ending is taking up all of my writing time/energy)

Now as a fanfiction writer, I have to have headcanons; it’s how I make the story and characters work while giving them extra depth. Naturally however; it’s not something I would usually think of outside of that. I have created the most fanfictions for this fandom by far (It was also the first media I ever wrote it for) so naturally I indeed have headcanons that will make their way into my fics.

Oliver trained Team Flash in hand to hand combat Now this one is less of a headcanon and more something I wish happened— cause where tf did they get their training from?? Maybe I’m missing/forgetting something and if so sry my bad— but this seems like something that absolutely could’ve happened. (I’m not counting superhero fight club as canon btw; as fun as it is)

Everyone goes to therapy

Gods this one is more wishful thinking than anything else— I’ll never forgive the CW for having Barry and Iris take couples therapy when what they both need is therapy therapy. The number of life threatening scenarios the entirety of Team Flash has gone through is more than enough to warrant therapy (and some form of PTSD but that’s a whole nother topic). The only possible exception I would make is Barry, because it would not surprise me at all if Joe had him go as a kid and the therapist didn’t believe him about the man in yellow just like everyone else; plenty of people have bad experiences with therapy that make them not want to go and that’s completely understandable.

2023 events & the future of the blog

Apologies for no events so far in 2023 - my health has been bad and I'd not been able to manage anything until now. Events for the rest of this year will be:

If anyone else would be interested in running the blog and keeping the events going past this year, please let me know. Otherwise, I intend to keep the blog up as an archive of past events and maybe do occasional reblogs of Hartmon fanworks in future.

similar to my thoughts on harrisco! i don't actively seek out content for this ship or think too much about it on a day-to-day basis but i am charmed by their bitter divorcee energy and tendency to tear strips off each other. this ship is also indirectly responsible for one of my fave quotes from the whole show ("Hartley was a jerk. But every once in a while, he could be a dick." makes me laugh every time).

i wouldn't actively go looking for fic of them but i'd probably read one if i saw one with an interesting concept. i also cherish my beloved headcanon that hartley locked cisco in the cryochamber on his first day. and i mourn the fact that we never got a vibe x pied piper battle because their powers are quite similar so i think it would have been interesting to see who came out on top. oh, and i think that hartley brings out a really interesting ruthless side of cisco that we don't really get to see often, which i very much enjoy. a compelling dynamic to be sure!

For my Kamisco high school AU, in which Cisco and Kamilla get stranded in a slightly warped version of 2006 where both their schools have been merged into one, so they have to relive some of their high school experiences, but together this time. Also, there is a series of tasks they have to complete before they can be sent back to the real world/present day. It's very fun.

♻️ A scrapped idea for your current WIP

Funnily enough, the meaning behind the title for Into the Fire actually shifted as the plot got more developed. I originally picked that title as a reference to the expression "out of the frying pan, into the fire," because Cisco kept finding himself in one bad situation after another, and each new development was worse than the last. And that technically still applies, since the series of events he goes through hasn't changed, but what did change is that now some of that has been relegated to backstory, instead of being something the reader will see play out in real time. I rewrote the beginning several times and it just kept taking too long to get to the point, so I decided that some things would be better explained than shown, so now the story starts at a later point than originally planned. But having a title so early in the game influenced the way certain other parts of the story developed, and another (though more positive) fire metaphor sprung up along the way, so now that title has kind of a double meaning. I was also going to have Team Flash as an established unit, just with a slightly different combination of characters, because Cisco hasn't even met any of them yet at the story's start. But EoWells being a thing didn't fit with my plot, and there's a fight scene that having a speedster on the team would cut too short, so I had to change Barry's life drastically, taking his story in a whole new direction. So now there is no Team Flash in this story because there is no Flash to protect Central City. The supporting cast is still more or less the same as it was always gonna be, but now they're less organized and less equipped to be fighting crime, because the usual lineup of characters has been switched up, as has how and why they all came together.

Ah, yes, clearly my most hated of ships. Certainly not the ship I've written for *glances at Ao3* the most for and absolutely not a ship I'd write *glances back at Ao3 again* 124 (and counting) fics for. Ooooh no, it is truly the worst and most hated ship.

I mean... the ship would be full of belligerent UST. And of course I would never ship anything that had that in it. Like ColdFlash. And sweet, heroic Cisco paired with a guy who tried to kill (or at least very badly maim) Cisco's best friend? I would never. Just like I'd never ship Barry with a guy who kidnapped Cisco. Truly I would never enjoy a ship full of messy or complicated relationship issues like that. *nods sagely* *quietly closes the ao3 tab*

Silvia and Daniel had two children, now in my care. Your niece and nephew, Charlotte and Charles, both twelve years of age, have been staying at our orphanage for a fortnight now. Though they have been handling the change in stride, I firmly believe that they would do best to be with family during this time. 

As the Rubinov’s have passed, and the Dunlapp’s are not capable of taking in two more children, I am reaching out to you. I understand that, though you are a bachelor, that you are well educated and have taught at the Ranport University in years passed. I ask, if you would, that you take in the children until Daniel arrives home. I wrote to his commanding officer myself; I was assured that it would only be a few months. October at the latest. 

I was a friends of Daniel’s, and of Silvia. Your sister spoke fondly of you. And often. I understand that I am asking for more that you may be prepared to give, especially considering your own grief. Silvia mentioned that you had stopped teaching some years ago, and that you had opened a curio shop of sorts on the docks. Not the ideal home for two young children, I know, however it would be a much better location than a boarding house. 

Do not fret over travel expenses and arrangements. Everything will be taken care of by a portion of the Dunlapp’s estate and my own contributions. You will owe nothing. hdjdh sorry I’m like spamming your ask I have a lot of feelings but also then like!! things with hartley were so good for cisco’s development too!! their dynamic was so much the core of it that they genuinely Couldn’t push cisco to the side and still have a story. I so dearly wanted to see them bond and I thought maybe since he was mentioned later in s2 he’d show up sometimes but nope! s3 hated gay people and hartley’s a dick again

the thing that fucking Gets me is that their characters are so intertwined. like. these are 2 people who NEED each other, who could really help each other heal and get better. they have SO MUCH IN COMMON I just want to see them TALK TO EACH OTHER..

Summary: Everything starts to go wrong the day Cisco Ramon enters his life, or so he thinks at the time (things go wrong before that, Hartley later realizes - much much later once he has a more level-headed perspective on events). Things also get a lot more complicated and that doesn't ever stop being the case.

The story (work in progress) of how everything left in Hartley's life crumbles around him and how he builds it up again, in two very different ways.

Written some time ago but edited, polished and posted for @hartmonfest2019 for the prompt ‘Hartley character fic’. This first chapter covers the point up until when Hartley is fired in canon.
