Allison. As per the extra content, Allison is straight up objectively beautiful, the kind of beauty you stop and gawk at in the airport according to Nora. She also has all the products and clothes money can buy so she’s always looking flawless. Neil doesn’t mention anything about her looks other than her design clothes but Neil is Neil.

Kevin. Narratively speaking, Kevin should be extremely attractive, as his character is meant to follow the tropes of The Ace and Always Someone Better. The comments Nicky makes about him suggest that he is indeed hot and it is a well known fact, as Erik seems to agree. But he is said to be “handsome through careful grooming”, meaning he needs to make an effort to look that good. His nice appearance is very deliberate. Jean calls him beautiful too, but he also calls Renee a pretty face , when Nora has said that she looks mostly normal, so it might be a sentimental statement.

Jeremy. Another good combo of being naturally good looking + being an athlete + putting all the money and effort he wants into his looks. He’s a rich guy living in LA and we know he goes to the hair salon. Nora said he has befriended 90% of his rivals worldwide and I think great part of that charm comes from his looks. Jean seems to be down for him since before meeting, just from looking at his game broadcasts and articles.

Jean. Jeremy and Laila comment on it first thing meeting him in person, even with Jean’s crooked nose and unevenly cut hair. A bad nose and a bad hair game would usually ruin someone’s appearance, so it says a lot about Jean’s looks. And he is putting 0 efforts as he believes he’s worthless. Jeremy mentions: raven haired, tall, all coiled strength, long limbs—you get the idea. And again narratively speaking Jean should be good looking: it’s depressive but most outside the nest so easily believing the rumours follows the So Beautiful It’s a Curse trope. Two contemporary characters with SA storylines heartbreakingly similar to Jean are Finnick from The Hunger Games and Genya from the Grishaverse, both also beautiful and SA’d since little in front of everyone. Both easily dismissed as seducers.

Neil. Good looking enough for Nicky and Andrew to take notice from the beginning, and for Allison to immediately try to flirt with him to make Seth jealous, even though he’s like 5’3’’ and Seth was like 6’1’’. And everyone thought he was trailer trash lol. His face card must be insane. He also puts absolutely 0 effort into his looks.

The rest all look normal according to Nora, but shoutout to Matt who gels his hair into spikes and is (at least) 6’4’’. I personally thinks he’s super hot.

The girl from Ipanema is dead. Or rather the one who gave her voice to it died, Astrud Gilberto.

The Girl From Ipanema was originally titled ‘Menina que Passa’ (‘The Girl Who Passes By’) and set to be featured in a musical comedy entitled Dirigivel.It was written in 1962 by Antônio Carlos Jobim with Portuguese lyrics by Vinícius de Moraes. The inspiration for the song came from a young woman, Heloísa Eneida Menezes Paes Pinto who lived in Montenegro Street in Ipanema. The 17 year old Heloísa would be noticed walking past the Veloso bar-café as part of her daily routine, and one day going about her normal business she caught the attention of the composers. Leaving an impression of youth and grace, to Moraes and Jobim she became the girl from Ipanema. The popularity of the song would elevate the teenager to celebrity status, and in the years that followed would be known as Helô Pinheiro a model and successful businesswoman. 

Under the spell of bossa nova, the great Stan Getz teamed up with Brazilian guitarist João Gilberto to record, primarily, the songs of Antônio Carlos Jobim. The resulting album, Getz/Gilberto was released in 1964 became a million seller and one of the most famous jazz albums of all time. The success of the album was arguably down to the track ‘The Girl From Ipanema’ which came out as a 45rpm single. It was sung by Astrud Gilberto, it went on to sell more than five million copies worldwide.

During the recording session for the album that took place on 18 and 19 March, 1963 it was decided that a version with lyrics in English would be a good idea. Norman Gimbel was on hand to write the English lyrics, and ‘Garota de Ipanema’ quickly became ‘The Girl From Ipanema’.  There was just one problem: no one available with a good enough command of the language to sing the song in English. That was, apart from João’s wife Astrud who had come along to the studio.

Although she had never recorded professionally before, she was an experienced vocalist having sung on stage with her husband and what followed catapulted the 22 year-old singer to worldwide fame. She laid down vocals for the track, as well as another song – ‘Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)’. Getz, Gilberto and producer Creed Taylor quickly realised they had something special, with her gentle voice, almost a quiet whisper, a perfect fit for the song and for Getz’s warm yet light toned tenor playing.

The astronomical success of the single ensured good sales for the full album too, and Stan Getz is said to have been remuneration handsomely for his work. However, whilst the success of the song may have helped launch Astrud’s career, she did not benefit financially. She was reportedly paid just $120 which was the standard rate for her contribution - although the saxophonist was apparently insistent that she should be paid nothing.

In her own words, she was manipulated by “wolves posing as sheep”. Both Getz and Creed Taylor claimed credit for the discovery, with the singer later commenting: “in fact, nothing is further from the truth. I guess it made them look important to have been the one that had the ‘wisdom’ to recognise potential in my singing… I can’t help but feel annoyed that they resorted to lying.”

As a result of the way the song was credited for royalties, Astrud Gilberto received indeed received no additional financial remuneration for her contribution. The injustice continues when it transpires that her husband at the time (they divorced a short time afterwards in 1964) received a 5-figure amount via royalties while Getz, securing the largest amount, is rumoured to have bought a mansion with his share that amounted to nearly $1 million. The injustice and inequality of the music business may have reared its ugly head – unfortunately just one of many such instances - but the music that came from the session has left us with a timeless gem. Today it is reportedly the second most recorded pop song of all time after the Beatles’ ‘Yesterday’.

The Girl from Ipanema would be her only major hit - though it crept back into the UK chart in 1984 as bossa nova flourished again, popularised by Everything But the Girl, Sade and others - but she retained a fandom for a series of subsequent solo albums on the jazz label Verve, beginning with 1965’s The Astrud Gilberto Album. She also recorded with Chet Baker, and continued to tour until 2002. In 2008 she was given a lifetime achievement award by the Latin Grammys.

Stories about piracy were nothing new in high society. Given, they were not the most popular topics, but they did come up once or twice. Coincidence or not, all the talks were about the same pirate, The “Sea Lion” as navies called him.

He was a lion beast man named Leona, so the nickname checks out. No one really knows where he came from or how he became the worst nightmare of any ship, boat or any other means of transport on the sea, which made ‘worldwide business’… difficult to say the least.

Speaking of the devil. There was a big rumor going on that he was finally captured just a few days ago or even less.

"...And I'm proud to announce, that once fearsome pirate, Sea Lion, was finally caught!" Loud cheers of approval were heard through out the ball room. Everyone clapped and congratulated the governor, yourself included.

"Now, my dear friends, as much as I want to hang that filth, by law I'm bound to wait three days, therefore anyone, who desires to face the beast, may pay him a visit in the dungeons!" Loud whisper began to acho all around you. As much as piracy was a downside for your business, you felt your profit senses began to tingle. This should be interesting for sure...

For 2 days the Sea Lion had visitors, everyone said the same thing, that the pirate king, that even The Devil himself feared, was just sleeping in his cell, like it was his quarters.

On the last day, you decided it was finally the time to pay that, seemingly, lazy lion a visit. After all, it's the last day, he won't be able to reject an offer you have for him...

Before you, on the ground, with some hay as a mattress, laid the legend himself. Rumours didn't lie, he really was laying down, as if he wasn't about to be hanged at any moment.

The man was handsome, only a blind person would deny that. Laying on his back, long chocolate coloured locks splattered on his face, mainly covering the scar on his right eye. Dark skin glowing softly from the suns light from a small cell window. Lion was dressed in a typical pirate outfit, only his signature hat missing, along with his sword and guns.

"How long are you plannin’ to stare me down?" Came from the man. "My apologies, didn't want to interrupt your afternoon nap." You replied with a small chuckle. "Is that so?" He asked, with clear sarcasm practical dripping off of him. "Well, you are awake now, so it doesn't really matter now, does it?" You replied.

"I have an offer you may be interested, Mr Leona." Upon hearing his name, the lazy lion opened one of his eyes, peering at you with his green emerald like orb. "What can you offer a pirate?" He asked snarkly, lips slightly curling to show his fangs. “I’m a person of business, you are a sea bandit, I’m sure you’ll find something to take from me either way.” You paraded.

“All right then, I’m listening, herbivore.”

To say that high society was baffled, would be a massive understatement. All of them were protesting and begging you to come to your sense.

Walking around with the famous pirate was indeed a hassle, but then again, it was your idea at the end of the day.

"Please, come to your sense, your grace!" Mr. Williams yelled in desperation. "What can I say? Mr. Leona decided to use Act of grace, and who am I to decline such an offer?" You replied with a slight smugness in your voice. “Just because he’s under your command now, doesn’t mean he’s not a criminal anymore. Please, your grace, this man, even after demanding an act of grace can’t be on a ship, much less be a captain of one!” This nonsense was getting on your nerves.

“Then he shall be my gardener!” You said the first thing that came to mind. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to show Mr. Leona my new peach trees, they’re quite exotic after all.” Turning away from Mr. Williams, you hooked your arm under the pirates hand and started leading the way. Leona looked down on with a smirk and a glint of amusement in his eyes.

"A gardener? You're full of surprises, herbivore."

A Complete Unknown

Director James Mangold Stars Timothée Chalamet, Edward Norton, Monica Barbaro, Elle Fanning USA 2024 Language English 2hrs 21mins Colour

Here’s why I think this film following Bob Dylan from 1961 to 1965 exists:

Bob Dylan remains a undimmable hero to the Baby Boomers, controversial in his prime but now less, uh, complicated than many of his peers, and has some traction with the succeeding generations, too

Music biopics continue to do good business. Last year’s Bob Marley: One Love made no discernible cultural impact but picked up $180m worldwide at the box office 

Timothée Chalamet is now indisputably a movie star and has the bushy mop of hair needed to play Dylan

With Walk The Line and Ford v Ferrari, director James Mangold has shown he can recreate the 1960s in a way that’s both handsomely cinematic and feels alive* 

Here are four works whose existence meant I was doubtful that there was any artistic need for A Complete Unknown:

Don’t Look Back – DA Pennebaker’s extraordinary fly-on-the-wall documentary shows us snarky, sarky, sulky, sparky Dylan at his peak in 1965

No Direction Home – Martin Scorsese’s comprehensive (3 hours plus) doc taking us from Dylan’s childhood up to 1966, framed with footage taken from Eat The Document, Pennebaker’s long-lost follow-up to Don’t Look Back. Many of the key figures in A Complete Unknown, including creaky old Bob, contribute

I’m Not There – Todd Haynes’ ambitious attempt at reinventing the biopic, with assorted Dylan personas filmed with different actors (Cate Blanchett, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Richard Gere and more) and in different styles. It doesn’t all work but often does and the concept is a great one

Inside Llewyn Davis – Dylan himself is only glimpsed but the Coen brothers’ somehow both loving and brutal portrait of folk-boom-era Greenwich Village captures the moment without that getting in the way of a terrific character study

Leading to the resulting question: could A Complete Unknown add much that those four films don’t already have? We’ll get back to that.

The first thing to say is that James Mangold, as expected, delivers a pretty, visually satisfying film rich with, but not suffocated by, period detail. Here, 1964 feels organically different from 1961 without people shouting ‘Have you heard the Beatles?’ (I mean, we do get lots of Walter Cronkite on the TV updating us on the Cuban Missile Crisis, March on Washington etc, but I think in the context of this story, that’s fair enough.)

The second is that Chalamet is really good. It’s unsettling when you get to a song playing over the closing credits and suddenly clock that he doesn’t actually sound like Dylan, when for the running time of the film, at least for me, watching him act as Dylan had fooled my brain to hearing him as Dylan. 

And indeed, almost the whole gang are immaculate. Monica Barbaro, as many people have said, is remarkable as Joan Baez – the cast all did their own singing, and pulling off a decent Baez seems like a steeper technical challenge than wheezing the Bob way. Ed Norton made me feel sympathy for folk ideologue Pete Seeger, a figure who I’ve never really warmed to. Will Harrison is perfect casting as Dylan’s ever-present mid-‘60s sidekick Bob Neuwirth.** The only stumble is Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, but Cash is a tough ask, and maybe I’m just chronically anti-Holbrook because of the godawful Narcos. 

That’s all lovely, but still: does this amount to more than either one of those TV movie musician life stories but with top-end talent and production, or one of those West End biog musicals? In narrative terms, the film takes us from Dylan hitchhiking his way into New York to visit his hero Woody Guthrie (Scoot McNairy) in hospital, meeting Seeger there and beginning a rapid ascent through the folk scene until he feels he’s outgrown it, all leading us to the notorious 1965 Newport Folk Festival.

Meanwhile, women find him initially irresistible but learn that they can’t get him to open up emotionally and that he’d rather write songs than talk. 

While it’s thankfully not doing the cradle-to-grave thing, the five years covered were still too packed with stuff happening in the world and in Dylan’s career to squeeze in, making it feel like we’re just skimming the surface as we race through time.

So maybe it’s a film of ideas and ideals, maybe it’s a film about an impatient young man outgrowing his mentor, maybe it’s a bad boyfriend movie. And in all those cases, you can’t spend too long digging into them because Mangold urgently needs to show us people singing again. 

As with Ford v Ferrari, I’m not convinced Mangold has a sophisticated grip on the ideas he’s playing with. After this film, I’m no closer to understanding why quite so many fans felt so violently betrayed by Dylan. (I’m broadly clear about why Seeger and folksong collector Alan Lomax – the true villain of this film – were so narked.)

If this a bloke and his mentor pic, it’s not operating at Paul Thomas Anderson levels. And if you want bad boyfriends, you’d probably be better off with something like Passages.

But of course, the underlying aim here, like the aim of most music biopics, is to let the audience indulge in a couple of hours spent with their hero, even if (as here) the movie seems to think that hero was a bit of a prick. In the sense that the songs are all diegetic, this isn’t what most people would describe as a musical. But it is a film whose ability to deliver pleasure is fully dependent on having people sing for us as often as possible. 

And that’s where I come back to the fact that so much footage exists – it’s easy to watch what actually happened at the Newport Folk Festival. And, yes, that’s on stage, but with Dylan at this time, we also have Don’t Look Back and the fragments from Eat The Document – you can see him interacting with fans, other musicians, the media… and yes, strumming away in hotel rooms. It’s all there. 

I went to see A Complete Unknown with a mate of mine who loves a bit of Bob (she is, it should be said, on the saner side of Dylan fandom.) She really enjoyed it. I also enjoyed it as an object, as a texture, as something I can see will work really well when you rewatch individual scenes. I’m just not sold that it fully hangs together as a piece of narrative, nor is it any way radical enough to be a film that rejects the need to tell a story.

*My view, though, is that much as in the narrative June Carter through sheer force of will saves Johnny Cash, Reese Witherspoon through sheer force of will gives the movie emotional life

R704, “Glenrothes”, the Festival Loco

Of the R-class, R704 “Glenrothes” (formerly ‘Lavellan”) was perhaps the snootiest of the lot.

Glenrothes had been chosen to represent the R-class at the Festival of Britain in 1951, and what a time he had of it… people cooing over the handsome appearance and clean lines of the R class. And he was indeed very impressive to look at, with his gold-brass boilerbands and red and black paint job. This he took to mean that he was special, in typical locomotive fashion.

The Rs all carried a confident air common to express passenger engines worldwide that they were intrinsically important due to their purpose.

Glenrothes attitude was intensfied by his showing at the Festival of Britain.

So when he came to the dirty little colony on the other side of the world, he immediately took to mean that he ought to have had deference due to him.

What a wake up call it should have been when the big Newport bastard himself, Heavy Harry, called him out in an interview in The Argus newspaper, calling the R-class “more mannikin than machine”. Harry was not well liked at Norf, but even the Norf locos were like, ‘He has a point” and began sniggering within earshot when Glenrothes would chuff past after that article was published.

(Just OOC: Yes, The Argus was a real newspaper and really did interview Heavy Harry. I put up screenshots of this article somewhere on this here blog.)

At first, it did not sink in, but Glenrothes grew more snappish and arrogant as he endured more insults.

(The next story was based on a real incident featuring an R-class and a turntable…)

One day sometime in 1952 , he had been told that he was to pull the Royal Train for Princess Elisabeth when she and Prince Phillip were to come to Australia; he was excited and feeling especially arrogant that day. He had gone to Ararat Loco after getting looked over for dings and other cracks and having been fitted with the Royal Headboard. He rested quietly in the wheelhouse ready to go. But he was not alone.

Heavy Harry was parked in the next berth after his fire had been dropped; sulking after one of his latest shenanigans got him into trouble (jumping the tracks) and he was not pleased to see the smug Pommy bastard down his way. He knew him by those polished gold boiler bands he kept flaunting.

“Ahhhh Harry… how are you faring… my prince”, he smirked.

He did not speak with the thick Glasgow burr that the other R classes possessed. When they selected him to be exhibited at the Festival of Britain, they took the time to school him in classical British Received Pronunciation, so he had cut-glass accent so clear and crisp it turned everything around it to ice.

“Get stuffed”, Harry snorted roughly, unimpressed.

“Pity you are in such a sour mood,… I have had some exciting news..”

“They’re sending you back to Pommyland?” snapped Harry.

Glenrothes was unruffled.

“I’m going to pull the Royal Train, isn't that exciting? Another wonderful notch on my figurative belt…”

Harry’s face darkened further. He was already unbearable and now this was going to send his ego sky high.

“Please stop talking, Glen-whatever-your-name-is, I’m not in the mood...”

“I just had to tell you, Prince Harry… as you were the Victorian Railways’ pride and all… I was just dying to share good news…”, said Glenrothes smugly, with particular irony stressed on “prince” and “VR’s pride”… the fact he used the past participle made it sting especially hard.

“Now that you’ve shared it… can you go away now?” snarled Harry.

“As you wish… my prince…”, he chuckled frostily and he chuffed onto the Ararat turntable to put him on the correct road.

Glenrothes, eager to show his high stepping gracefulness, in an exaggerated show of agility came to a stop on the turntable, perfectly centered without adjustment.

“Perfectly executed! No derailing… unlike certain engines!”

Harry seethed and glared daggers.

That turntable was finely balanced, a little too finely balanced … And it was a windy day. Glenrothes was still feeling very pleased with himself when the table began to turn, not so pleased when it began to spin out of control.

Harry on the hand…

“HES SPINNING LIKE A TOP, HE IS… LOOK IT, LOOK IT!”, braying at the top of his voice.

“Fuck, I wish I could see it!” complained a N class that was orientated tender first to the turntable.

“Awwww geez…” gasped another.

The locos that could see were treated to this red and black monster being twirled about like a top.

“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh… please stop it!” cried out Glenrothes. He was getting scared that he would never get off the turntable.

By the time the wind died and his driver applied the pawl to stop the turntable from spinning, Glenrothes was dizzy as could be, and the wooden platform surrounding the turntable was ruined.

“Don’t think my derail-prone, lard arse could have managed that, Glenny Boy!” sniggered Harry, as Glenrothes chuffed dizzily forward and away from the wheelhouse.

But that was not the end of Glenrothes’ troubles…
