Lunch at Jaan by Kirk Westaway

Continuing my April birthday celebrations, my wife and I enjoyed a beautiful lunch date at Jaan by Kirk Westaway which is an award winning restaurant featured in Asia’s Top Restaurants and the Michelin Guide.

Our lunch for the day features five courses celebrating the reinvention of British cuisine with unique takes on classic dishes.

Situated at the 70th level of Swissotel The Stamford, the restaurant offers stunning panoramic views of the entire city landscape.

Appetizers: Cucumber Meringue, Fish & Chips, Cheddar Pie, and Goose Mousse.

Lovely introduction to the meal with a progression of flavors and texture, providing a great sign that we are in for a gastronomical affair.

Soup: Roast Leek & Potato Soup.

Satisfying to the last drop, this warm entree awakes our senses and prepares us for the upcoming dishes. 

Bread: Rustic Rye Sourdough Bread.

So good that I have to control myself from filling up with bread before the rest of the dishes arrive.

Mains: White Asparagus with Caviar.

A balanced plate of sweet, savory, and sour notes just like a refreshing air of spring on our palates. 

Mains: Hens Egg with 5J Ham.

A fresh take on a breakfast classic that is as rich as it sounds, served with a small buttery toast to soak up each golden drop of sunshine in your plate.

Mains: Cornish Seabass with Spring Vegetables.

A nuanced dish encompassing the flavors of the ocean in each bite, contrasting perfectly with gifts from spring.

Mains: Welsh Lamb with English Peas.

Sweet, tender, succulent lamb wrapped in a crust to seal in all of the rich flavors and paired with a complex combination of sauces to accentuate the meaty goodness without overpowering it.

Pre-Dessert: Yuzu Ice.

Refreshing palate cleanser which makes us even more excited for the finale of the day.

Desserts: Chocolate Hazelnut with Coffee Flakes and Conference Pear with Vanilla Caramel.

Both desserts are absolutely delicious with my chocolate loving wife oozing over the richness of the Chocolate Hazelnut while I slowly savor my Conference Pear with Vanilla Caramel which resembles a perfect afternoon tea with my favorite slice of pie on a lazy weekend.

And last but not least, a quadruplets of sweet treats to mark the end of our lunch date.

Now for the question of the day: Was it worth it? Would I return for another meal to sample its tasting menu?

The answer is a resounding yes. Although the decor of the restaurant is simple and in need of a touch-up, the sweeping view of the city and the warm service more than makes up for it. The food is stunning and delicious, showcasing the chef’s unique interpretation of modern British cuisine with reinventions perfected over time. My wife and I has just added the restaurant to our small list of favorites and we will be returning next season to try out its latest tasting menu.

A World’s 50 Best divulgou hoje sua lista dos melhores 50 restaurantes do mundo. A Casa do Porco é o único restaurante a figurar na lista, pulando da 39ª para a 17ª posição. A lista dos restaurantes que conquistaram entre a 51ª e a 100ª posição foi anunciada na semana passada. D.O.M. (61º), Oteque (67º) e Lasai (85º) figuram no ranking. Este ano, como em todos os anos, o 50 Best comete inúmeras injustiças. Conheço 7 dos 10 primeiros. Não gosto nem um pouco de 2 deles (Noma, o vencedor pela enésima vez) e Central. Diria que o Maido é apenas razoável. Entre estes primeiros eu fico feliz com a 2ª posição do Geranium, um restaurante brilhante que não surpreendentemente está bem colocado. Ele segue a linha que domina o World’s 50 Best, a de um restaurante de alta gastronomia europeia. Entre os brasileiros, Casa do Porco e D.O.M. estão com valor exagerado. D.O.M. por algum motivo ainda consegue se segurar nestas listas. E parabéns a Oteque e Lasai, ambos merecidos. Olha, rankings são sempre complicados. No caso do World’s 50 Best alguns conceitos definitivamente precisariam ser revistos. O que vocês acharam do ranking?
