Hello, I'm Pickles the Collie, the 1966 World Cup hero! I'm thrilled to share my incredible story with you.
In 1966, a time of great excitement and anticipation. The world was eagerly awaiting the FIFA World Cup, and England was abuzz with hope and pride. However, just months before the tournament was set to kick off, disaster struck - the Jules Rimet Trophy, the coveted symbol of World Cup victory, was stolen!
I was accompanying my loyal friend, David Corbett, on an errand when we stumbled upon a scene of chaos. Police officers flooded the streets, and the air was thick with tension. As a sharp and perceptive collie, I sensed that something momentous had happened.
David was on a mission to find a payphone to make an urgent call to his brother.
My keen sense of smell led me to a nearby park, where I discovered a bundle of newspapers lying discarded. Something about it felt odd, and I stood there, my instincts on high alert. It was then that I had an Excited: the missing trophy was hidden within!
Wooow!! Seizing the opportunity to become a hero, I worked together with David Corbett to retrieve the trophy and return it to its rightful owners. It was an exhilarating and adventurous experience, and I felt immense pride in playing a part in restoring the stolen treasure to my country.
More importantly, this incident taught me the profound value of loyalty and intelligence. These qualities can make a real difference in the world, and I was grateful for the opportunity to showcase them.
In recognition of our heroic act, David and I were showered with rewards and accolades. I even had the honor of starring in the film "The Spy with a Cold Nose" .
Throughout my life, I've always had a passion for learning and training. Through puppy training and positive reinforcement, I honed my skills and became an obedient and intelligent canine. Today, I'm a devoted companion, cherishing the strong bonds I share with my family and friends.
As a proud Collie, I consider myself fortunate to have played a role in the 1966 World Cup. Collies are not just intelligent dogs; they are loyal companions, sources of inspiration, and bundles of joy. If you're considering welcoming a Collie into your life, I encourage you to provide them with proper training, love, and attention. You'll discover the incredible loyalty and intelligence that these remarkable dogs possess.

On this day in 1966, the Jules Rimet trophy was stolen, months before the World Cup. It was found in a hedge a week later by a dog called Pickles. (Goal) #worldcup #worldcup1966 https://www.instagram.com/p/B99qRx0pCFS/?igshid=1t95kw0z47yif

The 1966 FIFA World Cup was the eighth FIFA World Cup and was held in England from 11 to 30 July 1966. England beat West Germany 4–2 in the final, winning the Jules Rimet Trophy. It is England's only FIFA World Cup title. They were the fifth nation to win and the third host nation to win after Uruguay in 1930 and Italy in 1934. Notable performances were made by the two debutants Portugal, ending third, and North Korea, getting to the quarter finals after a 1–0 win against Italy. Also notable was the elimination of world champions Brazil after the preliminary round and the fact that all four semi-finalists were European, a situation occurring in only four other World Cups (1934, 1982, 2006 and 2018). Portugal's Eusébio was top scorer with nine goals. The final is remembered for being the only one with a hat-trick and for its controversial third goal awarded to England. Prior to the tournament the trophy was stolen, although it was later recovered. The final, held at Wembley Stadium,[1] was the last to be broadcast in black and white.[2] The tournament held a FIFA record for the largest average attendance until it was surpassed by Mexico in 1970. It was boycotted by most independent countries from Africa who objected to the qualification requirements. Despite this, the number of entries for the qualifying tournament was a new record, with 70 nations. SWITZERLAND 🇨🇭
Surely we should have qualified by now
Tumblr media
The Swiss team's secret World Cup lair
Switzerland have won all eight of the World Cup Qualifiers they have played, and it still hasn't secured them qualification. For tracking them throughout, and thereby keeping qualification just out of reach, have been the relentless, well groomed men of Portugal.
Tumblr media
The Swiss and Portuguese met in their first Qualifying match, in Group B in European Qualifying, in Basel, in September 2016, the Swiss winning 2-0. Since then, they have completely dominated the Group: between them, they have a record of 14 wins in 14 games against the other four teams. They have shuffled forwards together, never failing to win, always three points apart, probably cursing each other. As if by dramatic design, the Swiss and Portuguese meet in their very last Qualifying match, in Lisbon on 10 October. Assuming they will have swatted aside Hungary and Andorra respectively on 7 October, this match will decide the Group. Switzerland just need to draw, Portugal must win to gain a place at Russia 2018. The team that isn't successful will almost certainly enter into a playoff against another European team, so would have another chance. I go for Portugal to win - at home, with Ronaldo (14 goals in 8 games so far): and they are European champions after all. And Switzerland to finish second in their Group, with 27 points out of 30, nine wins out of ten. Good luck in the playoff lads - seriously.
Tumblr media
Hopefully I'm wrong and Switzerland get a result in Lisbon - I've taken against the Portuguese team. Not the nation. Their players. One expects a side to be well presented, to run a comb through their hair. But their excessive attention to er, how they look gets on my nerves. There. I am an old bloke and completely out of touch. Also on 10 October, Hungary play Faroe Islands hoping to retain third place in the Group, just for pride's sake. When I was a lad, and the First Division actually was the First Division, and players were called Alan and Derek and Colin, and you could buy a house for half a crown, and football was so much better than it is now.......(don't believe this drivel, kids, apart from on the issue of ticket prices), Hungary was a great football power. And now this.
Tumblr media
Andorra 1 Hungary 0, 9 June 2017, Andorra's first win in 66 competitive matches
I've followed them since the night they beat Brazil at the 1966 World Cup. Florian Albert was brilliant. They've never scaled those heights since. And now they rarely qualify - it's sad. That '66 team was great.
