Obviously we’re having a moment right now as a society. I humbly think that one of the issues we have at hand is BAD LEADERSHIP. Media spin is king. We can’t agree on basic human rights because we get the news that caters to our preferences. It’s sad; we have the greatest capacity for communication ever, and we have folks whose main priority is to maintain the status quo and NOT LISTEN. Last night I just kept working on music. This tune I’m working on is about demagoguery, which I think is one of the worst aspects of human nature; the intention to use the platform of fame/notoriety to manipulate the public through base emotion and prejudice. We have a long history of this in the US. As for the track- I edited and panned my acoustics, ran them through eq, chorus, and compression- all courtesy of Native Instruments. I sidechained the compressor to duck out the acoustics beneath the claps. I’ve had this tune for a few years on my computer and am finishing it. I hope everyone I know who is out can stay safe and healthy, and send love to all my friends. An aspect of guitar playing I haven’t featured a lot on my ig is rhythm playing. Here’s a snippet of some recording I was doing last night. I really love doing this kind of playing, and I try to make it sit in the pocket. I think about the great jazz guitarist Jim Hall talking about how he loved the playing of Richie Havens- Jim Hall said something like, “Listen to Richie, he’ll make you smile”. Watching this clip it comes across to me as some kind of weird cross between Tom Petty and The Isley Brothers. I’ve got some passing chords going into the chorus that have intentional dissonance in them to build up tension.
