An aspect of guitar playing I haven’t featured a lot on my ig is rhythm playing. Here’s a snippet of some recording I was doing last night. I really love doing this kind of playing, and I try to make it sit in the pocket. I think about the great jazz guitarist Jim Hall talking about how he loved the playing of Richie Havens- Jim Hall said something like, “Listen to Richie, he’ll make you smile”. Watching this clip it comes across to me as some kind of weird cross between Tom Petty and The Isley Brothers. I’ve got some passing chords going into the chorus that have intentional dissonance in them to build up tension.
