Artist Union

Art is the crux of life. Nietzsche said “without music, life would be a mistake.” What then, would life be without all art? Bob Dylan said “Art can lead us to God.” Imagine what our lives would be without music, literature, theater, film and art? Most couldn’t, and wouldn’t want to. Why then, are artists some of the most undervalued and unappreciated workers in the world? Why do so many people believe that being an artist isn’t a “real job?” The amount of time, energy, dedication, passion and WORK I have put into my JOB as a musician and songwriter is certainly equal to if not more, than most workers I know. The job of an artist is often HARDER than the jobs of many others. Yet my fellow workers often treat my job as not real or important when theirs is. I have spent hundreds, if not thousands of hours practicing, writing, mastering and performing my music. I have played in the freezing cold for hours, and have walked miles looking for gigs and places to play. I have written thousands of people in order to share my art. Yet all artists are familiar with the question “what is your real job?” We artists, are expected to work for free. We are expected to be satisfied with the payment of “exposure.” Yet nearly all other workers are guaranteed income for their labor. If you asked a welder or a baker to work for “exposure” they would refuse. It is time that people recognize that artists are skilled laborers entitled to a living wage just like all other workers. As a musician I have often been told that I shouldn’t care about getting paid for my work and that I should do it “for the love of it”…I respond with, I need to eat. I have not been paid by venues several times when they promised they would pay me, and when I demanded my money I was treated like I was out of line, even by people that I thought were my friends. It is the status quo, that businesses will pay all of their workers except the artist; such as a club paying the sound guy, bartenders, door man, but not the musician. Why is the responsibility on the musician or artist to bring a crowd? Musicians and artists are made to be responsible for bringing people to their events alone with no pay. But promoters and advertisers in all other fields of work are paid for this task as well. What if, the employees of a venue didn’t get paid every time there weren’t enough people showing up to a show and the musicians get a guarantee? Would that be fair? No? Then why is it fair when musicians don’t get paid? Are you starting to see the double standard? There needs to be equal treatment of all workers, weather non artist or artist. I as a musician, and songwriter, am entitled to fair pay for my labor as much as any other worker. When I play a show, and pour my time, energy, and skill into it I should be compensated with a livable wage. Otherwise, I will have to spend my time at a menial job that takes me away from creating better art. Which is the case for most artists nowadays in many parts of the globe. It is time for all workers, and all artists to come together and demand better, equal and fair treatment. For these reasons, and more, I am creating a union of artists, by artists, and for artists that demands guaranteed pay from venues, bookers, and all people who intend to use our art for their gain and a network of solidarity that will empower us and unite us together and rise the quality of art in the world and the dignity of the artist.
