Something to point to.

I am a self confessed musical geek. One of the musicals that I have been obsessed with for most of my life but never thought I’d get the chance to see is Working, a musical written using the words of everyday Americans who were interviewed for a radio show. I never thought I’d get the chance to see it because it never comes to the UK... except that now it has... but I still won’t have a chance to see it! Oh well. 

Working follows people in all sorts of different walks of life over the course of one day, each one telling their story. 

“I work in a luggage factory. We make suitcases. The tank I work at is six foot deep, eight foot square...” “I always wanted to be a fireman. A lot of guys want to be firemen...” “I have to be a waitress. How else does the world come to me?...” “I’m the president and chief executive of the corporation...”

Not one of the stories is the same, or even similar. Some are happy, some are melancholic, some are downright sad, but each person has a story to be told. 

‘Working’, being about work, is, by its very nature, about violence – to the spirit as well as to the body. It is about ulcers as well as accidents, about nervous breakdowns as well as kicking the dog around. It is above all, about daily humiliations. To survive a day is triumph enough for most of us.

The show ends with a song called “See That Building”, which is sung by a whole load of different people who fit together because of the building: The bricklayer, the window cleaner, the staff. Each has come together because they can point at the building and say ‘Hey, look... that’s what I did.’ ‘that’s where I work.’ The point of the song (and of the show) is that everybody should have something to point to, and that got me thinking. 

Everybody does have something to point to. Yes, some are more obvious than others, and some might be behind closed doors, but this doesn’t make them insignificant. If you’re a cleaner you can look at everything you’ve cleaned and take pride in them. If you’re a childcare worker you can look at every child you’ve worked with and know that you’ve had an influence on their lives. If you’re a housewife you can look at all of the 101 things you do in a day and how they help other people. 

If you’re at a point in your life where it appears that nothing’s working, or you’re stuck at a dead end and nothing will ever change, and even if it’s just getting to the end of the day in one piece, find the the thing that you can point to and be proud of it. Please.
