Tonight I reached a goal of playing at North City Bistro. I joined a club of musicians who I respect and admire such as @dannygodinez1977 and @joe__doria .The owner of North City Bistro is very nice and was a gracious host. I really love the fact that I get to do so many different thing as a singer. Last night I had dress rehearsal with my Joyvoice choir in Uppsala ans today I sang at a funeral in Sollentuna. Two different things but but something that I am very proud of being a part of. To get the honor of conducting a mass choir every thursday and sharing the joy with them ❤️ And then to get asked to sing on someone's funeral. To be a part of the family's farwell and through music helping them remember and honor that person is...well I can't really find the words to explain how that feels. Why I put up with facebook

I have submitted myself to the Facebook “like” game over the past couple of years.  Many people who know me well know that I despise Facebook, and some of those people challenge me to leave the platform all together knowing what my opinions are.  It is a documented fact that Facebook and other Silicon Valley startups were funded by deep state actors like the CIA and NSA to collect information and perform mass surveillance on the public.  Much of this information was leaked and became available to the public when the NSA wistleblower Eric Snowden released the information to select journalists and hightailed it out of the country. But all of that information is not the point to this particular article, the purpose and the point is to describe why I feel like it is necessary to continue to use facebook as part of my networking tools for music and other business.  The most obvious reason is that EVERYBODY is on facebook.  It is the internet within the internet, and somewhere along the way it engulfed the DIY/Indie music scene.  I had taken a break from music years back, and when I started up again and started trying to book tours for my solo endeavors I noticed that there were requirements from many venues.  Promoters and venues asked for links to a facebook page, and before a date was confirmed they wanted to have a link to an event page for the show.  So I figured out how to do this, created a facebook page and started making event pages so I could continue to do my thing.  When I would write a venue or a promoter I would always just direct them to my bandcamp page and my tumblr blog.  I felt everything that was necessary to book my a show for me was contained in those sites.  I hated facebook back then and despised the fact that I had to have a page in the first place.  I noticed at shows people would ask to connect with me on facebook.  At first, possibly due to a low number of likes on my band page, it would not appear in their search, and they would just connect with me on my personal page.  I also noticed how many people (promoters, zines, musicians) paid attention to the amount of likes you had on your page, and found that I was denied a couple of opportunities because of my perceived internet presence, or lack there of based on the amount of facebook likes that I had.  I found this to be quite ridiculous, but started to play the game.  I would encourage people at shows to like my page and started linking my facebook band page in emails I sent out.  I also started using the really annoying,“invite your friends to like your page” option on my facebook band page to attempt to build the total number of likes.  Either way I have increased that number and some things have become a little easier.  I don’t know if and how it’s all connected, but I am more easily searchable when people try to find me using the facebook search engine (like I said earlier, in the past my page would sometimes not appear at all).  Locally I have an easier time talking to venues and trying to book shows.  Touring has become easier, but I’m not all to convinced that facebook is a big part of that.  From my past experiences playing in touring bands the trend is that it gets easier and easier the more you do it, as your name spreads and as your network grows.  I was asked if the number of facebook likes corresponded with the number of people that come to my shows and the amount of music that I sell.  My answer is no, the amount of touring that I do and the amount of real life personal networking that I do are the only things that I know for sure that affect show turnout and music sales.

So in the end, I still feel it necessary to continue with the game and continue to use facebook as one of the internet tools for my music, even though I believe the organizations roots, objectives and use of censorship is troubling.  You can like my page facebook page following this link, http://facebook.com/matthewcharles.music - MWC
