I'm going to be moderating a panel on historical costuming for beginners for our local convention next month, and I knew a truly ridiculous number of people had applied to be on it--I think it was about 18 total, which maybe doesn't sound like a lot, but the average number of applicants for panels at this con is probably more like 3-6 --but I hadn't thought about the fact the credentials for folks who actually got chosen for the panel were likely to be pretty impressive.

Anyways I definitely only made the cut because 1) I volunteered as a mod and 2) I think I may also have been the only guy who signed up, but otherwise I am getting the impression that I might as well be a beginner myself compared to the four other panelists. The impostor syndrome is solidly mitigated by the fact that it's mostly my job to ask them all interesting questions and maybe chime in about menswear, but it is going to be pretty funny to be up there next to a bunch of powerhouse historical seamstresses like "I am also here :)"

so I watched little shop of horrors (which I'd never seen) with a friend last weekend and it's a fantastically done musical and it just got me thinking. does it seem to anyone else like every musical that's come out in the last five years or so is terrified of being a musical. just by comparison. because that movie fucking reveled in being a musical and it showed in the quality, but every recent one I've seen they keep refusing to hire singers instead of the same dozen or so big name actors, and the promotional stuff downplays that it's a musical so hard that half the time you wouldn't even know from the trailers. I was literally today years old when I found out that the Timothy Chalamet Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie was apparently a musical this whole time which is an odd choice but fair enough there are plenty of non-musical adaptations so it's not the main draw I guess. but they don't even seem to want to admit that Wicked is a musical. WICKED. why are we doing this.

Imma be real i dont Actually remember Why i got into sewing haha it was just something that my family thought i should know (and a way to keep my little autistic hands busy) but my mom was a big sewer when i was a kid, would make my halloween costumes every year and i started helping her with that when i was like 8, so my mom taught me hand-sewing when i was old enough to safely hold a needle (like 10?? i think??) and then my great-aunt taught me to use a machine when i was about 14. i would go to her condo for 'lessons' since she had a sewing room in her basement and she taught me how to read patterns and such :) I started making my own clothes very soon after, and by 16 I was either making or altering all my dresses for school dances 😂 and now [redacted] years later, I do it professionally!
