Fiction Updates

I’ve added a new way to sort the Leopold/Loeb fiction on the wordpress. You can now see the works separated by how close they get to the actual story. 

Direct Adaptations: The entire work is about Leopold/Loeb and very little has been altered.

Heavily Inspired By: There are recognizable characters inspired by Leopold/Loeb and elements of the real events are present, but there many be changes to characters, time period, motive, relationships, victim, etc.

Inspired By: While usually still recognizable as having been inspired by the case, often because it's referenced in the text, there are enough differences to the plot and characters to make it its own story.

Lightly Inspired By: These have all been confirmed by the creators as having been inspired by Leopold/Loeb, but they are so different that without that knowledge it would likely be impossible to tell. The plot is completely different from the actual case and there aren't usually direct Leopold/Loeb character analogues.

Characters In: Leopold and/or Loeb appear in someone else's story and are not the main characters themselves.  

Copycat: These stories involve killers/criminals who live in a world in which the Franks murder happened, and are inspired to copy it.

Darrow Focused: These works focus on Clarence Darrow, but include at least something about the Leopold-Loeb case.  

Historical Fiction: These are works of fiction that aren't about the Leopold-Loeb case, but they're set during the same time period, and involve the characters interacting with or discussing the case.

This has brought the fiction count up to 109.

So recently, Tumblr broke their ability to follow a reblog chain. This is a problem.

Following a reblog chain now takes you to a popup of that post alone on web, and a permalink view of it alone on mobile.

This is not only a stupid update that nobody asked for, but it also removes a core function necessary for my work here as an archiving blog.

As a blog who collects gifs from deleted blogs, I rely on the ability to go back to people's reblog and then continue to scroll back in time through their blog, where they've likely reblogged more gifs from other deleted blogs! I need this function to do my archiving work, and they've removed it!

And for what? To make things more "intuitive and consistent"?

@staff @changes Please, I am begging you to reverse this update. I can't do my work properly like this. I'm not the only one who's unhappy about this...

I can't and won't leave tumblr. because there's nowhere else really to post art where it can have engagement besides this site, Twitter, and instagram

and sadly all those avenues don't have artists' best interest in mind. but given that commissions and sharing art on social platforms is my only way of making any income

I'll be glazing and using nightshade on my art (I've also opted out of the scraping thru settings), and I'll still be posting, knowing that there's a risk

it's just saddening it's going in this direction. so I ask ppl to support REAL LIVING artists on here, Twitter (who is also scraping for ai), Instagram, and anywhere else because it feels bleak for us

An odd one this week: while reading the Leopold-Loeb inspired thriller The Face of Fear, I noticed a LOT of parallels with the first novel in the Hannibal series, Red Dragon. And then I discovered that Fear was published 4 years before Dragon, making me wonder if Leopold and Loeb just might have wiggled their way into influencing the Hannibal Lecter series.

2024 September Monthly Updates

I've got a very short update for you this month. I don't have any significant milestones or progress to show, I've just been keeping at it making progress on various things I've talked about recently. October will probably look pretty similar so I'll likely skip doing an update for it, especially since my girlfriend and I will be moving into a house late in the month and that'll be keeping the bulk of my attention! Once we've moved I'm planning to get the supplies I need to launch an online shop 🌟 I'll be easing into thing listing mostly prints & stickers I've already got designed but I've also got some plans for bigger things I want to make in the coming months :)

In other news I decided last minute (right now as I am writing this post) to do an October drawing challenge! My friend was telling me about their plans I got nostalgic for when I was in high school and took requests of other people’s ocs to draw every day in October or turn into merfolk in May… So if you’d like to submit a character for me to draw I’ve made a form here! I’ll be doing them in the same template I did these artfight attacks in because they were really quick and fun. I don’t actually know how long I’ll keep it up or if I’ll even do it daily, I’ve put zero planning into this and I know I have a busy month ahead of me so I’m also putting zero pressure on myself about it but we’ll see!

A Good Rule of Thumb: Too Clever is Dumb

Sooo, I am going through the site, post by post, to make sure everything is legible. Got about 100 left to go. But, here's the deal, my custom reusable blocks, which WordPress is so proud to offer... Aren't.

It's the updates. It's a year's worth of updates since I designed most of them, to WP and to the third party blocks that hafta keep up with it. Milo's cards don't really work anymore, nor do my existing accordions - although the the template still works on the latter if I stamp out a whole new block, the accordions weren't as complicated.

There wouldn't be as much of a problem if I could make a post and never, ever open it in the editor again, ha-ha, but that's not how I roll. So, while I am fixing colours and minor formatting errors, I am experiencing an occasional crashed block. I haven't killed any of Milo's cards yet, but the template doesn't work to make new ones, so it's inevitable.

First, I am correcting for legibility. But, eventually, I will have to go back around and redo the cards, and probably the Liner Notes, and other random stuff. I'll have to pick a new card format before I post the next instalment, because there's a card in it. I might end up going way more simple with no font or graphics at all - I'm having trouble with the theme fonts overriding the card fonts. Or else I'll hafta go back to images, which is less accessible and won't work with the dark mode. I know probably nobody's willing to put up with my work via a screen reader, but I'm trying not to be an asshole, just in case, ya know?

Well, tl;dr, I believed WordPress about a thing and made more work for myself. If grouped in a complex structure, Gutenberg's reusable blocks aren't reusable. Depending on complexity, you got about a year, then you gotta remake them all over again.

Beyond that: Since Discuz started dropping updates of untested compatibility, the SPOILER tags don't work anymore! There are spoiler-heavy comments now. I might be able to fix it, but in the meantime, NEW READERS (if any) BEWARE THE COMMENTS.
