Black-backed Woodpecker (Picoides arcticus) in Algonquin Provincial Park. This is a Male as evidenced by the yellow spot on its head. This Male is guarding his nest which has been carved into this Pine tree. These woodpeckers are Boreal Forest birds, drawn to areas with forest fires because there is usually a boom in the population of insects they feed on after a stand of trees has been felled by fire. . Ok so Woody left. Hopefully he’s growing and living his independent happy life somewhere. But we had gotten used to him and we miss him and his parents coming to feed him. So my dad figures he’s going to do something to make them come back and nest in the tree again. That’s where these pictures come in. The first ones are in our back yard. He had set that big dead branch out in the yard for the birds to come rest on it. But since he wants the woodpeckers back he went ahead and “started” a nest hole on the branch so that the woodpeckers continue enlarging the hole and turn it into a nest. He even put a fake bird poking inside the hole he made so that the woodpeckers see the fake bird and go “oh yea, if that bird doesn’t hurry up and peck that hole bigger then I’m going to make him move aside and make a nest for my family..” Do you think it will work?! You be the judge 😂!! Then he went to the tree up front, Woody’s tree, and drilled a hole in that one too, but on this one he nailed a plastic container with birdseeds to attract the woodpeckers again so they can eat while they build on the nest that he already started for them.. 🤔.. In this scenario the squirrels are the only ones benefiting from the whole situation 😂!! This branch suddenly broke off in the middle of the day! Apparently we have Woody Woodpecker relatives in our yard and the tree served them with an eviction notice. It's amazing and beautiful how they can carve a perfect hole in the tree to nest in! Notice that there is a second hole right where the branch broke off! Apparently this was an apartment building under construction..
