BOTD: Black-backed Woodpecker
Photo: Julio Mulero
"Generally uncommon, but not so quiet or inconspicuous as the American Three-toed Woodpecker. Where the two species are found together, the Black-backed usually dominates, perhaps driving the Three-toed away from choice feeding or nesting areas."

Starting to see our springtime birdies this week!!! So far grackles, redwings and robins have shown up in my yard. Haven’t seen any orioles or catbirds but i expect they’ll show up around mid april!
Didn’t get any good pics of the robins or redwings but here’s a grack! As well as a downy woodpecker, a mourning dove and an american tree sparrow

White headed Woodpecker Chilao 0526 by Pekabo Via Flickr: "The Station Fire (2009) was started by an arsonist in the Angeles National Forest, north of Los Angeles. It was the largest fire in Los Angeles County’s recorded history, burning a total of 161,189 acres – or nearly 252 square miles. " The White headed Woodpecker "...prefers to dwell in burned or cut forests where residual, large-diameter live and dead trees prevail; they require the tall, living trees as much as the burned ones. " Jerry and I have hiked Angeles Crest a lot over the years. I don't remember seeing or hearing these wonderful birds. After the fire the area was stark, bleak, and blackened. I had a big lump in my throat looking at the damage done by the fire. On this trip it looked greener. ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S27912635
