Taru van den Born is a Dutch blacksmith with a degree in Psychology, who offers training to ND folks, which he believes is therapeutic in many ways. He is doing a wonderful thing for ND folks. Folks like me, as I have ADHD.
I feel the same concepts and benefits could be found in woodworking, or any number of handcrafting/trade fields like smithing and woodworking.
I've certainly found woodoworking immensely beneficial for my ADHD. I didn't even get diagnosed or treated until I was 32. I spent my life before that being terrible at everything, and never sticking with anything for long except music, which I still wasn't very good at. I never understood why and assumed I'd always be a mess. Couldn't even hold a job for very long.
I got into woodworking shortly after getting help for my ADHD. Getting therapy and meds was profoundly life changing. Woodworking (or any craft) is no substitute for proper treatment and I wouldn't be where I am without out the support and good work being done by the docs at the Adult ADHD Clinic at the Hope Centre in North Vancouver. It's the only clinic of it's kind in Canada, a pilot project where adults with ADHD can get help entirely funded by public healthcare.
Woodworking had given me something I can engage with and focus on. I can lose myself in it for hours working on some small detail, existing only in the space between the wood and aris of the chisel. It's grounding, and very gratifying.
It requires a degree of planning and organization. I've gotten a lot of use out of the organization and project management skills I learned in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, but also refined those and learned a lot more through woodworking. It's taught me a lot of patience as well.
It's also diverse enough to keep my ADHD brain filled with novelty and change. One day I might be carving dovetails, the next restoring an old tool using electrolysis, the next doing some basic metalworking to make a blade or a thread cutter. There's always new techniques and methods to learn or research to do. Maybe today I'll go down a rabbithole on Victorian furniture decorative carvings, or some obscure facet of making iron age lyres. I've even translated books from Swedish and Finnish just to learn the minutae of Tagelharpa and Jouhikko bowed lyres.
So it gives me a universe of things to explore while staying in orbit around that central point of woodworking.
In the end, I have a physical object I created, or someone else does, but I made it. I can see my progress in physical objective terms. There is something deeply satisfying about that. Its creative but also very functional and practical. I'm engaging my artistic side by making something that is beautiful, or makes beautiful noise. At the same time its something physical which serves a practical purpose.
I never thought I'd be good at anything, but I'm getting good at this, and getting better every day, and that simple thing alone has been so good for my ADHD brain.
Of course, at my job most of my day is just making simple components, customizing doors, or replicating pieces for customers, but its still grounding and satisfying. Sometimes that includes restoring 150 year old doors or replicating Victorian moulding. Replicating or making custom components often requires creativity as I need to work out how to do it, and occasionally design new jigs and guides specific to that component. Sometimes I get to make new tools or equipment, such as a router table, for the shop.
I have to give my company a lot of credit for being a supportive environment that's helped me grow and put up with my constant screwups. This is very much a form of privilege that many of us ND folk can only wish for, and I wish we could all have. Taru van den Born seems to be fostering that kind of environment, which is just as important as any practical skill he might teach there.
I think we all, ND and Normie alike, could learn some things from his example, and I don't just mean how to forge metal.
Anyway thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

Today I did more finishing work on the wooden parts for the battery eliminator kit box. I got the board that came with the kit stained and finished, and all the parts re-mounted on top. It looks a lot better!
It’s amazing to me how much of a difference finishing the wood makes to how cool the kit looks. I’ve continued the finishing process on the sides, back, hinged door, and feet. It’s possible I’ll be ready to start assembling soon.
Stay tuned!

The main vise in my shop is a good sized machinist's vice. It was a gift from my father, and I've gotten plenty of use from it over the years. I love its versatility, and holding power.
But ... when working in wood, the vice jaws bite into the wood, which is okay for rough carpentry, but not so much for fine work.
A solution is simple hooks to go over the jaws. Once again the scrap pile comes to the rescue....

Your name is Earl Johnson. You're a hobbyist woodcarver, lifelong bachelor at 49, dedicated academic, and IBS sufferer. Right now, despite all this, the most notable thing about you right now is the fact you're located approximately three feet to the left of a large pulsing mass that has shambled its way into your woodowork studio.
The mass isn't doing anything. Well, it is unsettling you, what with the way it's sitting there pulsing and emanating a low rumbling hum that rattles your very core, but that's beside the point. It hasn't moved since its unlikely appearance. And neither have you.
You're stuck in a staring match with the eyeless lump. A wooden, partly-finished miniature pony rests in your white-knuckle grip.
Suddenly, your wife calls down the stairs.
"Earl, dear, we're having casserole for dinner tonight! Please, stop whatever you're doing and come upstairs."
You have never married anyone in your life, nor have you cooked anything more complicated than a grilled cheese. Slowly turning your back to the lump, you plod upstairs.
When you reach the kitchen, you see an unwelcome sight. It's the lump, wearing a frilly pink apron reading "WITNESS THE COOK" and a nice, tasteful hairpiece on its peak. And it (she?) seems to have cooked a lovely chicken casserole.
"Well..."
The lump does not respond, only hum. You awkwardly get a plate and cut a piece of the casserole out. It does not move. The hum is unchanging as you walk away and sit at the dining room table. Suddenly, the same voice you heard earlier emanates from the kitchen.
"Just a moment, dear! Let me get my share too!"
When you look up from your plate, the lump is sitting in the chair across from you, apron disposed of and serving of chicken casserole on its plate. Using your utensils that you forgot to retrieve, you dig into the casserole...
It's pretty good. You're keeping the lump.

So how does the giant tuna hunt work? (WIP)
Decide how long you want to send your sims fishing. Anything from six months (two seasons) to four years is realistic.
Your household gets one week’s bill worth in cash, in my case 13,000 simoleons. That’s the money the company is willing to invest in the journey and they expect it back at the end. Any surplus goes to your sims.
If the sims return with less than the starting money, they get fired (and maybe settled with a debt, your choice.)
As for regular bills, stop them incoming with any mod of your choice or cheat the money.
You need six sims, three pairs of one harpooneer and one pilot each. You can also add a captain and a wildcard sim for atmosphere, but they are not strictly needed.
Events
There are three watches, corresponding to your three teams.
“Watch” means that the sims must be on deck or in the crow’s nest and not sleeping. One must look through the telescope, the other can do whatever they want.
If a sim falls to sleep during a watch or leaves the deck, deduct some money from their share in the end.
First watch is 20:00 - 04:00, middle watch is 04:00 - 12:00 and afternoon watch is 12:00 - 20:00.
1-6 hours into the watch (roll a single die) an event occurs.
Note: After an event occurs, the sim in the lookput can stop using the telescope. So if they get lucky and get an event after a single hour, they have the rest of their watch “free”.
Roll the die again to see what event is triggered:
Tumblr media
1 - Nothing happens.
(Except of course at any time a meteorite may hit the sim at the telescope. Accidents happen. You are of course allowed to move your sim to safety in time and/or plead with Grim.)
Tumblr media
2 - Hull Damage!
Roll a die to see how many objects your sims need to craft and then destroy. For purpose of this event, the sims needs to craft one shelf (costing 87 simoleons) or eight figurines (priced at 10 simoleons) to regain one hull point.
Your ship has (Number of sims)x2 hull points. If they reach 0, the ship sinks and the sims die.
Tumblr media
3 - Damage to the Sails!
Roll a die to see how many embroidery objects your sims have to craft. One large ring (costing 150 simoleons) regains one sail point. If you do not have Cottage Living, you can also make your sims knit or even paint.
Your ship has (Sims present)x2 sail points.
If the sail points reach 0, the ship is incapable of controling its course, but sooner or later the sims will hit an island or get captured by slavers, both of which will lead to a different challenge.
Note: A damaged ship cannot make Big Catches (see next post). All Big Catch rolls become Normal Catch rolls until the damage is repaired.
Optional rule: Sims can craft sail and hull points in advance by preparing extra sails or reinforcing the hull. Ignore the point cap in this case.
4 - Trade Ship!
The trader sells basically anything, first and foremost food ingredients (if you play with the Simple Living challenge), sugar (for canning) and coffee. Shop to your heart’s content. If you feel ready for an extra challenge, you can also buy lifestock (goats and chickens). Traders will buy woodoworking figurines (”whalebone”), candles, canned goods (both cc and vanilla), oils and soap (cc).
OPTIONAL RULE (I use it myself, but it takes away from the realism): Sims can always sell goods. The trade ship enclounter is only required for buying.
How do you get those goods? By catching giant tuna (or whales, whatever you are more comfortable with). For that you’ll need to roll a 5 or 6. I’ll cover that in the next post.

casual psa if you follow that cunt who spent hours talking shit abt liz bc she doesn’t like the celebrity whose ass that bitch’s head is so far squeezed into she’s obviously lost all blood circulation to her already minuscule brain, you can just unfollow me :) imagine being so fucking deluded that someone not liking your fave sends you on a rampage for hours with your miserable lil anons (plenty of which you so transparently sent yourself), unable to comprehend someone having an opinion different to yours and expressing it in the most respectful way on their own blog. imagine being that old and letting 30 notes on tumblr from ppl making floor plans of tom’s house and jerking off to 2 instagram posts get to your head. they come out the woodowork just to like your bitter ask abt them fucking then dip whenever you say anything else bc no one gives a fuck abt your dumbassery otherwise. bum. zendaya won’t fuck you no matter how incapable you are of being an adult and making peace with the fact that other adults no think like you :( at your big age ❤️

Day 33: Tuesday February 2, 2021 - “Poly Up”
I joined a facebook group for beginning woodoworkers where I showed off my completed wall and got some great attention!  But the main point was to ask if people thought I ought to do anything more to it, to try to protect it and the consensus was “yes” - it needed some Poly.  Now this isn’t something I had much knowledge of and at almost $50 a gallon, I was feeling like it was an expensive extra step.   But then I thought about how much I already invested in the project and how just that one more step might make all the difference and decided to go for it.  I watched some youtube videos to get some tips and tricks and then after work, I was right back in the shop spending another night, putting in the sweat equity.
The nice thing is, The Blues were on, as I worked.  So I fired up my Dewalt speaker and turned up the volume on the good ole Hockey game.  Its something new this season, through my app, getting the radio broadcasts...which are really great!  Baseball on the radio has a certain relaxing nostalgia, but these guys that call the Blues games are just funny and energetic.  I enjoyed the rhythm of their song through two whole coats of Poly.  Its pretty hard work for my 8+foot by 19+ foot wall.   I had to sand it, clean it, and then paint it with the milky white clear coat - all the way down the line.  I broke it into thirds and found it took about two hours to complete each coat (3 total coats).  The Blues would win, and I felt, I did too, when I could step back and see the end result... a shiny beautiful coated wood wall.   Now I feel like Ive started to turn the corner for the back half of this project.
Song: Dave Matthews Band - Waste
Quote: “Life is grace. Sleep is forgiveness. The night absolves. Darkness wipes the slate clean, not spotless to be sure, but clean enough for another day's chalking. ― Frederick Buechner

little self ramble
my brain is slowly going numb from the catch up work. ive been doing woodowork for an hour and a half and have even more to o. i also apparently have to give up my weekend to catch up aswell. so my already exaused brai is going to malfunction-
the reason everything is overdue being
1)i get distracted 2) i genuinly cant do it 3) i struggle to ask for help (not asking my fuckin family) 4) its hard to read stuff i have no intrest in 5) i tend to not do thing out of spite like second nature. 6) being tired and exaused makes me want to sleep more. added work uses all of that exess energy i have stored in the first place.
so yeah- i am both exausted and feeling nothing other than simmering rage and empty rn. ‘making it managble my ass’
