SPLASH Forest & Nature School- Day 4

Thursday  was one of those magical summer days that we’ll never forget. 

I was happy to have a break from the rain and said as much when one of the children declared “not me! I love the rain!”. Clearly they were not traumatized by the two days of rain we had just experienced.

We had our morning snack at the picnic table and the children were happy to play on the swings and in the sandbox. A few children fished the sticks out of the bush that they had saved the day before, and asked me to stick-sit for them while they played on the climber and swings. A good stick is something to protect! 

Another child left me in charge of her rock-lizard collection. She explained that she had drawn their lizard faces on the day before “The lizards are in there already- i don’t make them. The rock just shows me where to draw”. 

After snack we met Gladys and Arizona at our stump circle. While we were waiting for them we read Byrd Baylor’s Everybody Needs a Rock.  Once they arrived they taught us about sage and cedar, and the importance of talking to the plants. 

After the teachings the  children climbed trees, hunted for bugs and played hiding and seeking games (Aka- zombie apocolypse). 

As soon as we arrived at our stump circle the children started eating their lunches, so by 11:30 everyone had eaten and the children were busy making fishing rods with sticks, string and paperclips in anticipation of returning to the “fishing spot” that we had found the day before. 

There was a lengthy discussion about what they should use for bait. Some felt we needed minnows, others caught bugs with the intention of using them for bait and one child decided some of the bread from his sandwich would be sure to catch a large fish. The children practiced catching different items with their rods. 

The younger children returned from their morning adventure and were having lunch and preparing for nap time, so we headed out to our fishing spot. 

The children were very excited about the fishing and I was worried that they would push each other trying to get close to the water so we decided that we would have only 5 children near the water at a time. Brandon also scoped out another close location for fishing so that the children could take turns at each spot. 

The excitement continued for quite some time! “Look Corine! We caught some seaweed!”

We stayed at the fishing spot for 2 hours and I’m sure we could have stayed for 2 more- but we needed to return and pack up our stuff since the younger children would be finishing their naps. 

At the site the children returned to their hunting games, bug hunting and tree climbing, and I also brought out the wood cookies and hand drills so that the children could learn how to use them. 

Some of the children turned their wood cookies into necklaces, some made keys, some used them as loose parts. 

…and just like that it was time to have snack and get on the bus :( Although the children were happy to hear that they could come back again tomorrow.
