sigh. alright. after 2 back to back soul-restoring movies in Cathy Yan and Christina Hodson's Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn and Dev Patel's Monkey Man, i feel like i'm ready for some pain. now seated for Wonder Woman 1984 (2020).
i've never seen it, i have never had any desire to, i heard it was really racist and maybe there's some non-con stuff here, but that's about all i know about it. i literally do not care about this movie, but i'm not going into it trying to hate it obviously, you all know i love art too much to do that. i am bracing for the worst (here's to hoping this is actually at least a movie unlike Suicide Squad (2016)? i can't do another Suicide Squad.) but i thought the first one was at least pretty entertaining and kind of well done (until the ending ruined every good thing about it) so here's to hoping this isn't entirely dogshit. if you're curious about my full thoughts on the first one, just look up Wonder Woman on my blog or like check my letterboxd, link in bio.
anyway, same disclaimers as last time apply: Free Palestine; for the duration of this watch, we will be pretending Gal Gadot is not who she is; no antisemitism will be tolerated. alright. let's fucking do this and get it over with so i can have some fun again after it with Gunn's The Suicide Squad.

WONDER WOMAN 1984 2020
Welcome to the future. Life is good! But it can be better. And why shouldn't it be? All you need is to want it. Think about finally having everything you always wanted.

Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
A magic stone that grants wishes threatens to end the world as a businessman gains control of its power.
As a standard superhero sequel it had all the usual elements like returning actors, many action sequences with generic war imagery being smashed, and varying visual effects. It was fun to learn new things about the Amazon culture and what the lasso of truth is capable of, as well as the new kind of god magic.
It was a bit of a downgrade that the previous installment involved fighting an actual god during a world war and then this one is cleaning up one of their toys that an angry man-child got hold of. It was also highly unlikely that it was resolved by everyone on the planet choosing to be good in the end, especially the weak main antagonist.
The ending was the more entertaining part of the movie as it had finally established a real choherent threat and goal. It had the proper super-elements like a comic villain and the subtext finally reached its peak about greed and misguidedly wanting more, in addition the parallel between manipulating people into wishing their doom and the positive-thinking methods of cultists was amusing.
The first half had so little direction and focus that it was difficult to invest in, which is worse since the whole thing is long enough to be almost two movies long. The romance was difficult to invest in because we know it can’t work out and costed some random guy his body. The god armour was terribly weak and it was a little myopic of Diana that her boyfriend had just said the world wasn’t worth his life and then she proceeds to tell a story about how great self-sacrifice is.
3/10 -This one’s bad but it’s got some good in it, just there-
-The director denied repeatedly that the lead villain is a parody of Donald Trump who was US president when the film was made.
-Asteria is the name of the Greek goddess of stars, hence explaining why she was played by the star of the previous series in the franchise.
-Barbara Minerva is named “barbara” which is the greek word for “strange” and Minerva who is the roman goddess of wisdom and war.

a movie with a soul so rotten, it's impossible to even call it a superhero movie, this is a supervillain movie. also the worst knockoff of a Indiana Jones movie that you can possibly imagine.
