every so often i see wonder egg priority come back up with random people being like “god that show was so good until it sucked bad” and like man i think ppl can not resolve conflicting thoughts in their head because like if you connected to wonder egg priority, even if you hated episode 11, episode 12 is literally a transcendent experience. because the show gets it!! it’s just good

I think what really fucked Wonder Egg Priority was A) overworking the animation studio, forcing them to give up a precious episode slot for a recap to buy time and B) making it 12 episodes instead of 24 given the entire SECOND backstory to this world's setup and tech, which should have been skipped or reprioritized earlier since only 12 episodes were secured.

The Pokemon show up and then get erased before you're able to digest this supernatural stuff showing up in the real world, when theretofore the story had maintained a hard line between the fantastical and the real. Frill shows up, full stop - same problem, and secretly has an online army of secondary AIs she made, same problem. Everything about the CEO you're just meant to accept with extremely minimal backstory. In a show that didn't shoot itself in the foot, that air of mystery around how she's running things so well so young (and the following details about how she was put there) could mean something to the overarching plot, but her status as a nonstandard unparented human tween girl affects seemingly nothing except for her personality, which doesn't initially change her fate from the other three until a later piece of extra show comes out. And then she has the 'this friend here is also a genius but they're in stasis and also albino and also have heterochromia with pink and purple eyes and pink frosted white hair and they're my best friend' and they only got one or two extra bits of content to fix any of that. For comparison, the main character was allegedly bullied for having heterochromia with two normal human eye colors, so to then see someone with such unrealistic design pop up felt fucking ridiculous given that context. This is the only character who fucking looks like that and yet nobody really said anything about it. She doesn't fit the aesthetics of the human/real side of the show.

Seeing so many anime nowadays getting production issues and delays, I'm really glad that Mob Psycho 100 is not one of them.

It's worth mentioning that the animation producer is often the one to blame for production issues as they are the one who bring the anime staff together (I recommend checking this thread since it brought up the recent case of Nier anime’s indefinite delay, 86 anime's notorious delays and many episode recaps that happened a while ago), so it's not always the studio's fault or the staffs’ fault. Digging through more information and sources before assuming what happened/blaming someone for something bad happening within the production is always good.

I am reminded of Wonder Egg Priority and how they had to ask help from many people all around the world just to complete the episode hours before airing, and the plot going completely off the rails, the staffs were overworked so much they went to the hospital (I believe it's either one of the animators or the director, I don't remember), and the final episode was delayed one month before it concluded with many mixed reactions. It started off great, like a passion project beloved by many, but it didn't last long before it started crumbling apart nearing the end.

Production issues have always been happening a lot since a long time. It's not something that has only happened in recent years. Anime industry is a complicated and harsh place. Animation producers like Kadokawa is aiming to produce 40 anime per year, which resulted studios unable to handle the project and many staffs are being overworked. Even Revue Starlight anime, despite managing to finish the series without a significant drop of quality or delays, was also known to have a lot of production issues behind it, even the chief animation director said "it's a miracle that we managed to finish the show".

Let's look back to Mob Psycho, and let's see how "far ahead" the production is. The second season trailer was released one month before its broadcast in January 2019, and it already has many footages up to Episode 8. And the third season trailer that's released before its broadcast, which showed footages and voicelines all the way to episode 12. Rumor has it that S2 had finished production a while before it aired in Winter 2019, but it’s never specified when, while S3 had finished its production in Spring 2022 (around April-June 2022). I can see why people are upset over the third trailer spoiling the final arc, but when I watch this trailer as a manga reader, I don't feel upset, instead I feel relieved. I'm glad that the production of the anime has finished in advance, which means it wouldn't be subjected into delays or mid-broadcast production issues many anime are suffering right now, and it still delivered many standout episodes like it’s never left. Even though many talented staffs, at that time, were booked for other projects (such as Tachikawa Yuzuru having to step back from being a Director to Chief Director, handing the position to Takahiro Hasui because Tachikawa-san had to direct the upcoming Blue Giant movie), Mob Psycho still kept the high-quality production of S3 even until the end. It just shows how different a series can be if handled by the right production team. Not just the right studio, but also the right director, character designer, producer, episode directors, animators, and many, many others.

Think about what would happen if Mob Psycho hadn't been handled by the same people, and not with the same amount of love and passion towards the series. It could have production issues. It could have delays. It could have a lot of episode recaps mid-broadcast. It could have many staffs hospitalized. Or it could manage to finish on time but with VERY recognizable drop of quality. Or it could be just another forgettable anime adaptation with nothing special happening in it.

I think we as Mob Psycho fans should be grateful that we have not just BONES, but also Tachikawa Yuzuru (director of S1, S2, Chief Director in S3), Takahiro Hasui (episode director of S2's Separation Arc and Director of S3), Yoshimichi Kameda (Character Designer and Chief Animation Director), Hiroshi Seko (Series Composition), Kenji Kawai (Music), Miyo Sato (the artist of all paint-on-glass and S3EP6's sand-on-glass sequences), all of the staffs, animators, episode directors working on it, producers, all of them. We are so blessed to have an adaptation full of love, passion, and care from the staffs. It's such a rarity these days.

Wonder Egg Priority Final EP 12 Discussion/confusion:

SPOILERS AHEAD PLEASE SCROLL FAST!!!!

okey what? happened??? what!!!! what?????? im so confused and well clearly there is a sequel of some sort.. but tbh and this is my Own Opinion.. as much i love this anime, i think they kinda reached too high. this episode felt like they suddenly were like oh Lets set the feeling of “the first part of the journey has now finished” so they can get more seasons and stretch out the journey.. which is what i Want but it felt so rushed and confusing tbh..

i’ll be colorcoding the things that bother me and my questions.

Lets dissect:

before the egg:

first my girlies meet again and its such a heavy and intense meeting.. beside the very gorgeous art i loved their choice of long shots when they are discussing, as it felt like their own private convo that we are listening to, and ofc the gloominess of these shots. then it jumps to momoe and ai close shot and it feels SO HEAVY.. anDD RIKA ISNT IN THE SHOT.. i think their positions represent their communication techniques.. and my girls really suck at communication.

momoe refusing to explain herself is weird to me.. but i think it was a lot on her. AI reaction was understanding tho but my god i wish they went after momoe and rika.. they need each other SO MUCH to face frill.. which begs the question.. WHYY didnt ai tell them about frill??? wtff???? what was the point of the last ep? and of ai knowing whats up if She Didnt Say Shit??! bruh.. idk

ai and the egg:

now we reached the part that i think really pushed it waaay too much.. ai cracks the egg and surprise surprise.. its her.. from a parallel universe......... long silence..... honestly that felt soooo sooo rushed and weird and out of plaaace.. and the fact that acca and ura acca immediately explained oh its “parallel universes” like excuse me? u were shocked neiru got her friend but oh Yes parallel universes are so normal.. doesnt that literally change SO MUCH?? that means Any past Egg could be a parallel universe one.. maybe their friends went there when they disappeared? does that also mean then frill exists in every timeline? thats very eh confusing..

i did tho love the growth ai went through.. i think they added a parallel universe ai to demonstrate to Us the viewers a real time comparison.. and to also tap into kioto’s death and give us a closure to it without ruining the fact that once people are revived they immediately disappear.. i believe giving us a truth with that restriction wouldv’e been impossible..

im also proud of ai.. a lot.. she also said maybe she doesn’t wanna know and she ended up partially putting it together on her own.. she also was so sure and confident of who she became and of her happiness, and her judgement on the sensei.. she didn’t let her otherself’s fears manipulate her opinion or change it.. and it all just shines through her with her yellow jacket just ♥︎♥︎

and then they go into the water and i cannot foer the life in me Tell u what what Hell Happened.. what??? all i got was: oh they defeated those doubts good for them.. ai got her conclusion good for her.. then she’s like “idk how to go to other universes YET but i’M gOinG to FiNd oUt and gO HelP yOu!! “like buddy thats waay too obvious that the creators want another adventure.. idk hope they can somehow make that a nice concept and elaborate cuz i reallllly love this anime.

the creepy butterfly comes and ai acts smart.. and gets her otherself who supposedly already died dead? idk the rules are a mush now.. tho the shiny things thing.. i feel like it can be a reference.. also a lot of mirrors in this ep.. and we get the real villains of this story.. acca and ura acca.. frill is at the end their creation plus i Do Believe they could’ve killed the scary butterflies but they DIDNT cuzzz they want to bring the girl back... thus sacrificing the lives of so many.. and considering that our girls arent the first, it means that they saw the creepy butterflies do that over and over again.. then saw girls kill themselves from the trauma which is beyond fucked up.. and what they did to rika im Sueing..

anyways i want the sequel now and i really enjoyed this anime dispite how Super Confusing it might get.. lowkey believe the writers themselves dont know whats happening
