Chimers — Through Today (12XU/Poison City)
Chimers erupt with a furious roar, guitar and drums flailing wildly in full-speed, full-body motion. The single “3AM” from the second full-length, clangs, pummels, and dreams, the vocals going dim and droney above the tumult. A guitar-and-drum duo, the Australian band, churns up a wake of turbulence soothed over by psychedelic bliss. It’s like the Japandroids crossed with Salad Boys, like Kinski towed at 70 m.p.h. on waterskis, like FACS, but faster, thumpier and less artfully complicated.
The band came together during pandemic isolation in 2020, the general loneliness amplified by the band’s remote Wollongong location. Padraic Skehan and his partner Binx were both drummers—perhaps a hint at how Chimers’ driving, propulsive sound evolved—but Skehan switched to guitar and voice. A self-titled album emerged in 2021, and as the COVID receded, Chimers took its body-pulping assault to the public, earning something like cult status. Henry Rollins is a fan. Junkee.com called their debut "One of the strongest Australian rock records of the year.”
Now, the follow-up comes on 12XU in America (and Poison City in Australia), a bold, rapturously noisy onslaught of head-battering percussion, razor-sharp strumming and singing like a smoke mirage disappearing in your hands. Ten songs in half an hour, no breaks, no divergences, no filler.
“Generator” blares a sort of sweetness, its massive guitar sounds lurching in tuneful directions while drum fills go off like firecrackers on a string. It’s this one, with its yearning, dissolving lyrics embedded in blistering guitar tone, which makes the Hüsker Dü comparisons seem right. “Gossip” ramps up a lyrical spray of electric guitar into serrated, stop-start menace, while “Glossary” flirts with post-rock introspection before putting the hammer down.
“An Echo” seems, at first, like a restful interlude. All lucid guitar clarity and a pulse like drum, it takes on the oceanic pull of the Dirty 3. A violin (Jordan Ireland) moves in and about Binx’s airy croon. And yet, even at slower speeds with less frenetic drumming, Chimers play with intensity. A wild caterwaul scrawls across limpid surfaces, quiet but still unruly.

This Sunday Painters (not to be confused with the Christchurch, New Zealand one) were a 1980s band that, according to their Bandcamp page, wanted to be like "every band from the Velvet Underground to King Crimson to the Sex Pistols to Throbbing Gristle." Sunday Painters were a Wollongong, Australia band.
While this does sound like a product of the late 70s/early 80s there's a lot of DIY and noise that makes this sound of today. I would argue that there is a bit of The Fall in here as well as Normil Hawaiians and Slugfuckers.
What's Yr Rupture is reissuing this, but it can only be found on their Big Cartel page...not on Bandcamp.

Metal singer belts out screamo Britney cover on The Voice

Metal singer belts out screamo Britney cover on The Voice
17-year-old metal singer Mol Turner from Wollongong delivered a screamo rendition of Britney Spears’ Toxic on The Voice Australia last night.
The teenage singer got a chair turn from judge Kate Miller-Heidke as well as a standing ovation from all four coaches.
Judge Adam Lambert said, “That was so much fun, I fully got a kick out of that. I thought that was so interesting.
“I know the screamo thing isn’t necessarily the most mainstream genre, especially for a girl to be doing. I’m proud of you for getting up there and flexing your muscles.”
Guy Sebastian added that he’s “never seen anything like that” during his time on The Voice and didn’t turn because he wasn’t sure how he could coach her.

But it was Kate Miller-Heidke who hit her buzzer, and said there are longstanding similarities between opera – in which she was first trained – and metal. She said divisiveness, drama and raw emotion is needed to make both genres work.
“That was so delightful and surprising. I may not have been the coach that you would’ve gone for. But I feel like this is a great match,” she said.
“I feel really, really excited about working with you and I can’t wait to choose songs together. It’s going to be so fun.”
Mol Turner didn’t think The Voice would accept her
Singer Mol Turner said she’s so proud to be the first “extreme metal” vocalist on The Voice stage.
“Truth me told, I applied as a joke thinking what I do would never be deemed ‘talented’ enough to actually make it to The Voice stage amongst pop, country and R&B singers but here we are lmao,” she wrote on Instagram.
“Metal & HXC have defined who I am & in a lot of ways saved my life throughout the past 7 years. This music means absolutely everything to me, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Mol performs in local band Clueless and says Amyl and the Sniffers’ Amy Taylor is a huge inspiration.
The teenage singer borrowed a three-word phrase from Amy to respond to those describing her Voice performance as “satanic” and “talentless”.

Expensive Music Band are a Cringlia, Australia (suburb of Wollongong) band. "Things to say at a barbeque" is their debut LP released by both Permanent Slump and Exclusive Culture.
I've been enjoying this release which kind of moves between Le Villejuif Underground (Nathan Roche), Wireheads and Lawrence Arabia. From those three, you probably get the idea that this can rock at times and mosey along at others.
This has the Mikey Young stamp of approval.
