[Okay. Some soy sauce, garlic. A bunch of garlic. Wolf-man thought about this for a few moments, continue turning it. And let it go in the oven for another hour?]

Underrated: The Astounding Wolf-Man Volume One
This is a column that focuses on something or some things from the comic book sphere of influence that may not get the credit and recognition it deserves. Whether that’s a list of comic book movies, ongoing comics, or a set of stories featuring a certain character. The columns may take the form of a bullet pointed list, or a slightly longer thinkpiece – there’s really no formula for this other…

something there’s a distinct lack of in batman fanfics, especially ‘brucie wayne’ centred ones is the networking he’d have to be doing on the daily to maintain that sorta reputation
like, we all know the man knows how to throw a gala but where are the brunches? the happy hour gossip session with his cover’s clique of the week? the golf club dinners he has to attend every third week of the month? what about visits to hospitals or schools or the soup kitchens for his philanthropy? come on now
you’re telling me he’s the most sought after celebrity in gotham city and beyond, an infamous playboy and supposed extroverted people person who can use long holidays that can last weeks at a time away in tropical islands supposedly partying it up as a plausible excuse to hide his injuries sometimes but when he’s in gotham he’s either at wayne enterprise meetings or tucked away at home alone? nah
i want to see bruce having to really utilise those meditation breathing skills he learned in the league while he’s having to sit upright in a chair with 4 broken ribs, a sprained wrist and a minor concussion in a painfully bright restaurant at 3pm on a wednesday having to listen to bethany-anne titter on about the latest gossip about her neighbours affair with the maid that’s basically an open secret by now like pls there’s so many different routes you can go with this depending on the genre,,, make bruce have to REALLY commit to that cover of his lmao

[Continued From]
Tumblr media
As Gary walked into Mark’s office he shifted back into his human form. He adjusted his suit to fit better. Gary’s secret to looking good, while still being able to shift back and forth, was that he had a few of his suits tailored to adjust based on what form he was in. Owning multiple companies and being a decent businessman allowed for such things. Gary walked into Mark’s office, in human form, and sat down in the nearest chair that was not Mark’s that he could find. He immediately put one leg over the other and got comfortable.
“So I wanted to check on the up-n’-coming super kid, that opened a business to help heroes. I also wanted to offer him the support of my company, since we deal in technology and I.T.” Gary sat there watching Mark and smiling a pleasant, businessman smile.

The Wolf Man is what moviemakers keep trying to make Jekyll and Hyde into.
If you read the book, Jekyll made Hyde on purpose. Basically Jekyll is a man who wants to indulge his worst impulses but retain his respectability and good reputation. Hyde is an alter ego who gets to do all the vile things Jekyll wants to do, and draws all the opprobrium Jekyll fears, while leaving Jekyll free of the consequences. When Jekyll runs out of the ingredient that make his formula work and realizes that he had been working with a bad batch of it, but didn't know what was wrong with it, he tries desperately to acquire or make more so he can continue his double life. Recognizing that he might be stuck as Hyde he leaves himself all his money! All of his actions are focused on retaining his good name without the effort of deserving it.
Jekyll's situation is uncomfortably familiar to a lot of people (just consider all the purity culture wank that goes around this website, and the universality of anon hate from people without the courage to show even their masks as they indulge their vile impulse to harass people), and it is the nature of the situation that they cannot admit just how accurately it represents them.
Hence the common misrepresentation of Jekyll's motivations, and the triumph of Larry Talbot in the public imagination. Larry isn't the one doing the horrible werewolf things and can't be held responsible for them - he's an innocent person, despite all the harm he has done. He tortures himself with remorse for this harm without experiencing any of the catharsis of committing it. This is far more sympathetic, far more compelling, and far safer to identify with than Jekyll's more realistic conscious preference for the appearance of virtue over the reality of virtuous behavior.
Who's your favorite of the classic universal monsters and why? (based solely on their portrayals in the universal movies, sequels and crossovers included, not their original book counterparts.)
The Wolf Man, because the character was both written and performed so well that he basically redefined what werewolves are in Western culture. None of the other Universal monsters can claim that impact, and since they never recast him, he also remains the most consistently well characterized and acted monster from film to film. Dracula and Frankenstein got their characters shaved down in sequel after sequel, but Lon Chaney Jr. made sure Larry Talbot was never less than his best.
