A year ago, Ann Paul wouldn't introduce herself in Wolastoqey.

But after months of learning — both by herself and from her grandchildren, who go to an immersive Wolastoqey school and bring the language home to her — Ann now feels comfortable standing up in sharing circles and speaking in her language.

"I'm taking my power back and I"m learning it," she said. "I'm using it whenever I can, and I will eventually be a speaker."

Language gatherings like the one recently held at the Paul Pyres Centre in Neqotkuk First Nation (Tobique) are important, Ann said, because they can empower people who are afraid to try speaking Wolastoqey.

“A Progressive Conservative candidate for a seat in the New Brunswick Legislature is facing calls she withdraw from the campaign after she compared protections for 2SLGTBQ+ students to the systematic taking of Indigenous children from their parents to place them in residential schools.

Sherry Wilson said the federal system of forcing tens of thousands of First Nations, Inuit and Métis children into the schools was "only allowed to happen because children enrolled in school were isolated from their parents' oversight, input and influence."

She implied there was a parallel between that and the province's original Policy 713 — which allowed 2SLGBTQ+ students to adopt names and pronouns at school without their parents knowing.”

“Wilson isn't the first Progressive Conservative to draw the parallel between policies to protect 2SLGBTQ+ children and the residential school system.

Hampton-Fundy-St. Martins candidate Faytene Grasseschi made the comparison as a Christian conservative activist, before becoming a PC candidate last year.

She told CBC News in a July 2023 interview it was an Indigenous parent who first told her there was a parallel.

"It's an ideology. It's a mindset that says the children belong to the government, not the family, not the parents," she said.

Grasseschi acknowledged the potential consequences of the original Policy 713 weren't as severe as children being taken hundreds of miles away from their families and losing their Indigenous language and culture.

"In terms of children actually physically being taken away to another — yeah, absolutely," she said. "But I think the point was it's an ideology."”

Christofascists can’t imagine that children are in fact people and not property. And that if you change every single word and event and reasoning in a situation, it becomes an entirely different thing.

These people shouldn’t be in charge of a houseplant, let alone a government.

Something new for Native American Heritage Month this year:

This playlist features indigenous musicians from North, Central, and South America. "Mi’gwame’l Tplu”taqnn Inc. (MTI), an organization representing Mi’gmag communities in New Brunswick, has filed a massive title claim that covers more than half of the province on behalf of eight of the province’s Mi’gmag communities.

Their title map overlaps with that of the Wolastoqey First Nation filed in 2021, meaning the entire province and some of the waters surrounding it, are now subject to land claims.

The six chiefs of the Wolastoqey First Nation sent Global News a statement on Wednesday, saying their talks with MTI have been “open, friendly and productive” and that they ” wish to amplify (Wednesday’s) call from the Mi’gmaq chiefs: It’s time for the Government of New Brunswick to see the importance of negotiating recognition and implementation of Indigenous title.”

“We’re not looking to reclaim private lands, that’s not part of the discussion,” Chief George Ginnish of the Natoaganeg First Nation, a Mi’gmag community near Miramichi said in an interview.

“It’s about Crown lands, it’s about industrial activity that’s happening on Crown land. It’s about having a process for development, resource extraction, things that are going on now that are kind of one-offs that would have a formal process.”

MTI based the map on research pertaining to historic land and water use.

Ginnish said MTI intends to negotiate with the province before resorting to the court system.

“Let’s have a realistic discussion that recognizes the relationship and helps our communities move forward and take our rightful place in the words of our elders, in our own land,” he said."

Ok random question: favourite food?

BC: Anything involving wild Pacific salmon. Smoked, in sushi, candied with maple syrup. The only requirement is that it must be not farmed.

YT: You can't go wrong with sourdough pancakes. We even have a festival for them. The Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous.

AB: You may think its beef but it's actually bison. Personally my favourite way to eat it is as a burger. But you can have it other ways too.

QC: Its a a hard choice between poutine and tourtières, which is a type of meat pie. Both are very fin.

ON: Beavertails are my favourite sweet treat. But I also like a good pie.

MB: A schmoo torte for dessert after some smoked goldeye with a side of Winnipeg rye bread is a filling meal.

NB: The Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqey People have this great seasonal dish called Fiddleheads. Many buildings have architecture inspired by the food.

PEI: Anything potato related. Don't laugh. But seafood is also popular.

NL: Many say our dishes are weird but that's the way we like them. But it's usually only the names that are weird. Jigg's dinner with Figgy Duff for desert is our favourite though.

NS: Lobster, but especially creamed lobster.

NU: Its so hard to choose. But Big Sis said I have choose only one thing I'll say caribou stew. It's great for cold nights!

NWT: I quite enjoy dipping bannock into caribou stew. But James made with wild berries are great too.

SK: I may be called the Breadbasket of Canada, but bread is not my favourite. Saskatoon Berry Pie for dessert and Perogies, Borscht and Cabbage Rolls for dinner please.

Ann Paul thinks in English first, but she hopes the same won't be true for her granddaughter. When Kehkimin Wolastoqey language immersion school opened in Fredericton last year, the goal was to develop curriculum at multiple levels so students could progress in the language.  Now, three new books are doing just that. One new workbook and two storybooks are the latest learning tools for the kids at Kehkimin, located in Killarney Lodge, where Ann Paul's granddaughter goes to school everyday. "Language is coming full circle," Ann said. "It's coming back." She's been relearning the language herself, but when her granddaughter comes home from school and shares new words she learned that day, Ann said it awakens the language inside her. "She's bringing out the words that have been sleeping inside of us." The community held a book launch at Killarney Lodge to celebrate the curriculum release.

One of the tree oldest birchbark canoes from North America, recently repatriated from Ireland. We got to talk to a local artist whose ancestor made all three of them, and his work repatriating them, tracking them down, repairing them, and building new ones in the traditional style. Let's look at that second.

Children and teens who are denied recognition of their actual identities at school since they're not out-let alone out and supported-at home definitely share something with students at schools created to obliterate Native identities, cultures and everything: attempts to alter their understanding and recognition of who they really are. As a certain New Brunswick politician has it, they're denied parental involvement to pass on culture. As someone completely allied with trans people and feels she went through a kind of transition to receive legal recognition of her actual identity years ago, however, it went completely beyond me.

Don't have any idea if she will move higher inside New Brunswick's authorities; easy saying as one of God's queer Jewish adult children I'm praying she won't have anything above her current level. Perhaps she can receive some kind of demotion or something???
