FFXIV Polyamory Week

Day 2: Domestic Life | Mundane Tasks

The gentle sounds of harp strings being plucked fill the house and filter out the back door to the garden, where Hades lounges on a chair in the sun with a book in hand. If he listens closely, he can hear Cynthia and Hythlodaeus quietly discussing the lyrics and style of a song.

After a few minutes, he goes back to reading, allowing his partners’ activities to fade into the background.

But with the warmth of the sun…

Well. He can close his eyes for a moment.

He knows he’s lost this particular fight when he hears the two still inside the house start to sing.

He wakes up to the sound of muffled giggles and the sound of something being put down on a nearby table.

Cracking an eye open, he sees Hythlodaeus placing down a pitcher of lemonade and a few glasses, and Cynthia is crouched next to the chair looking up at him.

“Hey, sleepyhead.” She says, poking him in the arm. “Weren’t you supposed to be doing some super important reading?”

“Checking a historical text for any inaccuracies, if I remember correctly.” Adds Hythlodaeus.

“I’m allowed to close my eyes for a moment.” He grumbles, sitting up in the chair. “And it better not have been Cynthia who made that. You always make it far too sour.”

“Hyth ‘fixed’ it after I made it. Not my fault the two of you can’t handle the taste of lemons.”

“And yet all of your friends agree with my opinion.”

She huffs, standing up and pulling two chairs closer to the one he’s in, and then hands him a glass.

“What? Not going to tell me what the two of you were up to?”

He takes a sip. Still a bit too sour.

“Well,” Starts Hythlodaeus, “When you told me some of the songs Cynthia’s village had passed down over the years were in Amaurotine, I was absolutely intrigued.”

“So originally I had just been playing the songs for him,” Cynthia says between sips of lemonade. “But the discussion ended up turning towards a comparison of my village’s music and the music commonly played in Amaurot’s concert halls.”

“Which, of course, led to me asking about different types of current-day music. But before we knew it, a few bells had passed, so we decided to check in on you.”

“Only to find out that you were partaking in your favorite hobby. So we decided to join you out here.”

The three of them talk as the sun crests and passes the highest point in the sky and the glass pitcher is empty, and when Hythlodaeus yawns, they retire to a darker and cooler place to nap.

new homes for ourselves, and new dreams.

Although I know the journey will be hard, we have lots of time.

But now here she stands, so close to silencing Meteion’s song of oblivion and proving Hydaelyn’s, Venat’s faith true, showing the world to a new future, and she wants - has, almost - to show them it’s still possible. A long time ago Emet-Selch asked her for an alternative, and now she can give him one. - Azem, Emet-Selch, and Hythlodaeus, in Amaurot and at the end of the universe.

I’m looking for more ffxiv blogs to follow, especially writers or folks who like doing things like lore discussion/meta, ask/tag games, or post fanfic!

FFXIV Polyamory Week

Day 7: Vacation | Relaxation

Spoilers: None

As Cynthia and Hythlodaeus start to lay out beach towels and set down a picnic basket, Hades sighs in relief, snapping a beach umbrella into existence and lying down.

“Looking forward to a day of sunbathing?” Asks Hythlodaeus.

“A few hours at least,” he grumbles, “since I’m sure the two of you will find some way to bother me.”

“But if we didn’t bother you, you’d worry something happened,” says Cynthia. “You wouldn’t have it any other way.”

He cracks an eye open and smiles at her for a moment before letting the sound of the waves lull him to sleep.

When he wakes up… sometime later, he sighs and rolls onto his side, intending to fall back asleep…

But it’s quiet.

Too quiet. 

Sitting up, he looks around to figure out what mischief his partners have gotten themselves into this time-

And he’s surrounded by a wall of sand on all three sides, with the open side facing the shore.

“Oh, for the love of-” he grumbles to himself, standing up and walking out the open side.

There are small sand sculptures and sandcastles all over the immediate area, and closer to the water are doodles statements written in the sand that are already partially washed away.

But neither Cynthia nor Hythlodaeus are in sight.

Frowning, he turns around and walks the perimeter of the created sand walls, and finds the two lying on a towel in the shade created by one of the walls.

They’re covered in sand, with Hythlodaeus partially lying atop Cynthia as the two are fast asleep.

Well.

If there’s already a layer of sand on them, what’s more of it?

He smirks, snapping so the sand wall closest to them collapses and partially buries them.

Hythazemet:

What, specifically, was the catalyst for their physical attraction (if applicable) to the other character? In other words, what in particular had them like “Oh, they’re…hot…”

This took a bit of thought because of how the ancients live (ie, in hooded robes with masks most of the time until they get close). They just live very differently and see very differently. I think for Emet, that initial spark was their souls. They were captivating to look at. For Hyth's part, it was Emet's soul and Azem's voice. And for Azem, who is not as gifted as the other two with soul sight, it was Emet's mouth and Hyth's lithe and nimble fingers.

2. Does this change over time? What things do they find “hot” about their partner after they’ve been together for some time, and have had more time to, well, notice and appreciate?

Ironically, I think it was the more physical that took longer to appreciate because of their society. I headcanon that Emet and Hyth had known each other since they were young and so Emet was thoroughly unprepared for find out that his childhood friend was the most beautiful being on Eitherys. Hyth was also pleasantly surprised by how handsome Emet was and even more pleased when he discovered how flustered said friend would get when he pointed this out.

I also hc that both Azem and Hyth are a bit more lax about social norms. So, while Hyth waited until Emet was comfortable, he and Azem removed their masks around each other relatively early in their relationship (which started before the three were all together). Azem loved to see the crinkle in Hyth's eyes when he would laugh in the way that had long enthralled her.

Emet, meanwhile, found out when they were all together that both of those he loved, through some ridiculous twist of fate, had the same vivid purple eyes. Azem learned that the mouth that had initially charmed her so, would twist into the softest smile just for her.

7. Do they (or would they) pursue the other character’s affection, and if so, how? Do they tell the other character how they feel? Try to earn their admiration? Woo them with romantic gestures? Flirt with them, skillfully or otherwise?

I think initially there was just a bit of light flirting on either side. Both had a lot to contend with when they first met, so starting a relationship was low on their priority list. By the time either of them realized they were actually very interested (through no direct effort on either part), it was a series of missed connections. Hard to hook up when one of you has been whisked off to another shard.

By the time they finally had time together, it was time to be direct. Aubrey told Estinien exactly how she felt and he reciprocated. Things developed quickly after that, their initial wooing stage lost in war and wandering.

9. What do they think about commitment? Is a long-term partnership the goal? Are they thinking about building a life with their partner, or are they focused on the present?

As I said, I don't think either of them was thinking about it at first, given the circumstances. I also don't think either was predisposed to it initially even without the war. Estinien I feel half expected to die young or at least devote his life to the hunt as a dragoon. Aubrey loved the idea of love but long term relationships sort of died when fate hit her.

However, once everything was sorted, I think they're both in it for the long term but haven't said as much. They're both very happy and I think take it as a given. That said, long-term looks different for them than it does for many. They are both taken to travel and neither is fussed about it actually being together. They'll come back together when they do, as they long have. It's also hard to say what a future looks like when one will (gods willing) live hundreds of years and the other was joined with a dragon in ways that permanently changed him. Will it be until his end or hers? I don't think they know and maybe they'll sit down and really talk about it but at the moment, neither is bothered by it. So they're building a life together and focused on the present, simultaneously.
