Princess Mink

Icewings are always really pale when they're young, this is true for all icewings, even the ones that turn out really dusty as adults as they gain their color as they age. So it was of much concern when Mink was this dark at a young age, turns out she's just melanistic.

A list of reasons why The Dangerous Gift is probably my favorite book in the mainline series and definitely my favorite book in arc 3:

We finally get to check up on Pyrrhia and see the aftermath of arc 2.

The reveal that Tundra was really just a repressed weirdo, even by IceWing standards.

Glacier's death wasn't meaningless or for shock value.

Snowfall's PTSD isn't ignored.

Snowfall gets to be dramatic as hell in ways that are as hilarious as they are sad.

Snowfall and Lynx spend literally like 80% of the book by each others' sides.

The reveal that Winter wasn't actually banished by Snowfall, and Snowfall subsequently calling him a drama queen (she's one to talk.).

The reveal that Crystal wasn't plotting anything, and was literally just hanging out in Sanctuary. (IceWing royalty just LOVES to assume the worst in their family.)

More Qinter.

It introduces Wren.

Snowfall becomes the most informed character in the series, making her pov worth reading through.

We finally get an explanation and justification for the disappearance of animus magic in a way that makes sense.

Mink.

"It was inside you all along." Played completely straight finally. I'm tired of novels that hate tropes.

The book ends with Snowfall literally smashing racism and classism to pieces with her fists.

One Wings of Fire ship I really don't understand is Anemone x Mink. I haven't seen it too much but I've seen it before as an alternate to Anemone x Tamarin for age reasons, but I feel like that doesn't make sense.

I don't remember anything that confirms Tamarin's age; it's often assumed she's just the same age as Kinkajou (4 years). She could also very likely be 3 years old which is closer to Anemone (2-ish years).

But besides that, Mink and Anemone, despite being the same numerical age, absolutely do not act like the same age. I find it really weird that the alternative to a ship where the age gap, first of all, isn't known but also isn't really a problem is a ship where the characters are the same numerical age but act like they are in completely different stages of life.

For example, Mink acts like a little kid and the way she speaks reads a lot more like how Tui writes the younger dragonets in the series. Anemone speaks and acts like the characters in the second arc and is evidently supposed to be a lot more mature than Mink is.

idk, it's just something I noticed. I know there's a lot of talk about age gaps (this one not being one of the popular ones), but it's just weird to me that sometimes the intent with character ages isn't taken into consideration over numerical ages.

I cannot see Anemone and Mink being intended to be the same age and I'd much rather see both of them in relationships with dragons who have similar maturities as each other rather than simply the same numerical age.

I finally picked up a physical copy of one of the WoF books and by chance it was book 14 soooo

Snowfall and Mink after Snowfall's finally figured out what kind of queen she wants to be~

I talk a lot about how ridiculously competent Glory was as queen, but Snowfall really deserves some recognition, too.

The craziest part is, her book wasn't even ABOUT the overarching plot of arc 4 like the four books surrounding it. And yet she STILL managed to turn all the important characters in the exact right direction.

AND SHE DID ALL OF THAT ON THE SIDE. IT WASN'T EVEN THAT BIG OF A THING FOR HER.

In addition to this, she also:

Worked through her own issues, including her PTSD and her own personal biases (We love a newly self-aware queen).

Got a gf.

Fixed her relationship with her siblings and Winter (I can only hope Icicle and/or Hailstorm came next).

Lived multiple lives.

Personally smashed three separate animus gifts, all representing xenophobia, racism and classism.

Mink

Mink! Everyone forgets she and Anemone are the same age

Design notes:

- Based off a mink! Easily the most unconventional icewing royal of the bunch

- Her ears are very big which puts her at risk for losing heat, so she is often seen in very fancy earmuffs

- Icewings have black scaled undereyes to prevent sun glare and hers, like glaciers, are like diamond shaped freckles

- Female royal icewings develop antlers, and it is a very useful shorthand for determining whose in line for the throne

- Small and string-bean-esq, and will most likely stay noodly as she grows up
