so i got ideas about mr haneumann and the local murder elf being compatible so. this is with the tone of them getting together as a couple, though theyre both insane enough they would never call eachother boyfriend yknow??
reminder ive not played the game so if i characterise them wrong or whatever please forgive that. im running off my partner's discussions and screenshots, one video of the party members chatting to eachother, and then just my own pure undiluted mental illness.
idk if this needs warning tags, like. theres some details where wow these two are freaks but all pretty par for the course with tech priests and drukhari yknow? if you're interested in that lot youre used to them being a bit fucked in the head, theres nothing startling i dont think. let me know if otherwise

It was a slow discovery of his- that perhaps flesh may yeild some purpose in this life beyond being a target to strive against. Soft, squishy bits of pale meat interspersed between severing masses of silver… it was clear which he preferred.
Despite what may be presumed were he to word such observations, this was not a statement contradictory to his faith. Rather… one that coexisted, within his personal classification of it. While some permitted their metalwork to rust or tarnish, some polished it to a bright shine. He personally had tended to a delicate patina over many years- a cultivated, gentle age that took time and life to create, and became a point of pride. There was purpose to his cleaved respirator, scarred as it might be, remaining his, rather than being replaced as another might insist upon.
His skin bore the same scar as it. For weeks his reflections had considered that perhaps, by logic of his own fondness in that unique mark, his skin should be cultivated in the same tender way. Where he desired it be kept, at least. There was at least a small list he intended to act upon yet.
Leaning further into the mirror, he squinted. Then opened his eye wide. Blinking once, then looking left, then right. The lens of his optic allowed him to observe the function in entirety, not drifting in the same manner as the organ embedded in his skull. In tandem, it was optimal- a demonstration of his latest discovery. Manifestation and observation within one unit. Flesh and machine working cohesively.
A trilogy of satisfyingly tuned clicks permitted him to see closer in increasing magnification, the creases settling heavy around his eye seeming cavernous with the observational closeness. It downturned from the central point, practically heavy with itself and lending to a sadness or dismissiveness that had been inquired of cause from him numerous times- often followd by frustrated statements noting how his expressions were little showing even within the expanse of his face that remained uncovered. More recently, the frustration was instead an apparent care, expressed by a Rogue Trader keen to know his emotional wellbeing and not satisfied with the statement that his emotions could be vaulted and were already minimal in days before then.
Sparse, fine hairs darkened the border of each eyelid- he had forgotten the term for such hairs, likely so obscurely referenced and commonly known he had purged the record of it to provide space for another. Web-like blood vessels sprawled across the white of his sclera, and with the soothing touch of metallic fingers he prised away the lower lid to see where they stemmed from. With it gapping away, he could see closer inside himself than he'd found possible without wounding, a mass of veins and a… squishy casement.
Everything about flesh was squishy. There was no better word that contained both the textural description and the inherent desire to poke or squeeze. It… was gradually losing the sickening revulsion that it had previously held for him. Fascination at the intricacy distracted from the goreless yet undeniably visceral sight.
A slight pain, weak enough to be felt purely by his original nervous system rather than entering the network of alerts, appeared in his cheek. Permitting it the focus it meekly requested from him, he looked to the staples still decoratively lacing his scar, and the slight soreness between the two that had pinched together with his inspection. Pressing the cool fingerpad of the fourth digit between them, a cascade of neural connections expressed themselves in a marginally deeper, relaxing exhale through his respirator. A fascinating cause and effect.
Perhaps the Omnissiah would impart news of his yeilding to the Biologis who once argued so feverently to her cause.
Of course, there was reason to these new contemplations beyond the practically ancient conversation with a Magos of whom he could scarcely recall. A reason that he had long believed was rejected through petty ignorance, now more than ever, yet endlessly unnerved some part of him aware of repercussion.
It was no longer enough to deter him. Were he to be challenged, he would have argument enough to any wise Magos and the protections of the intriguingly considerate Rogue Trader to excuse him- a feral devout would brand him for any number of more minor transgressions, and he cared little for their opinion as a result. There was no need to justify himself to anyone lesser. With no sign from the Machine God to the contrary, he held confidence in their mutual safety.
If a threat were to emerge against those odds, Marazhai was certainly capable of defending them both. Getting him to cease and retreat when was wise instead of following the delighted urge to create more bloodshed would be the issue.
Depicted in a bloodstained memory was his smile. A sharp, taunting thing that even on recall brought a small flutter to the complicated systems that comprised his vastly spanning heart. The sensation made him feel somewhat queasy with awareness of his internals and their movements, yet… he decided to settle with that awareness, rather than seek to avoid it.
Marazhai had often mentioned such things, talking about it more casually and knowledgably than any other. Enjoyment seemed not just in tandem with the concept for him, but directly tied to it- within it, inherently part of it. The internal sensation of a pulsating circulatory organ rotating the order of contractions within its chambers at an elevated rate was apparently part of what was thrilling to him. Particularly in unison with one of said circulatory organ held in his hand. Whether it was somebody else's or his own seemed open for discussion.
Hand raising to his chest, he felt the bulky plating that simultaneously served as armour and external structural support to keep the sheer weight of his own body from punching clean through the select parts of his ribcage he had kept. Aware that concealed beneath the plate and gently threaded into it's supports was a structure of spokes of different lengths throughout his torso, at least three requiring openings be constructed through the artificial lungs that connected directly to his respirator. The various extended chambers, sub-chambers and adjoining injectors that marked the core of his circulation laced between it all like vines about a trellis, cables threading into the thick plating encasing his spine to relay fuel and power back and forth.
Slim, prising fingers had already forced their way through that casing once, nails scraping along the brittle vertibrae without the reasonable fear of the metal clamping down and crushing the spindly, intruding digits. Perhaps- 80% chance- even enjoying the thrill of the threat. One that had never manifested- it had taken diverting and shutting down a number of automatic systems, but he had remained curled up on himself for the curious touch, head bowed to the floor and back curved to keep the spacing as wide as possible without permenant damage. The most he had moved was to constrict a mechadendrite around the skinny figure looming over him, squeezing his waist in need for a grounding touch that earned shallow, gasped breaths and nails raked down the patches of skin at his sides. In sheer overwhelm, he'd forgotten himself, beginning a binharic trilling that concisely conveyed every alert, sensation of panic and pain that he'd felt. Not once had he requested cessation, and enjoyment had been interspersed far more frequently than he'd anticipated- the recall could never be misinterpreted as begging.
Marazhai's feelings on the matter required no clarification. Prising through the tubation of his respirator to grip his throat and draw his head close, hissing praise and encouragement for the sounds. Nails finding the seam where his skin had been tucked in against the metal, splitting it away slowly, sinking in to his knuckles with audible desire in his voice at the distorted screech it earned. Encouraging him, taunting him, urging him for more-
There were things that needed to be done. Recalling this before doing them was unwise.
The first step he took was with weak enough legs to sway, instinctively driving his mechadendrites into the ground to stabilise himself.
Certainly unwise.
-
It was rare to see pure, untainted anger in the Drukhari- an expression of unenjoyed frustration. The matter brought an ominous intensity to him, intimidating between his towering stature and the unusual shuffling clicks of his armour.
Turning his back, he began finalising his prayer to the machine spirit, raising a hand in a request for a moment he hoped would be respected.
With the wrenching snap of two metallic digits and the firing of a spring into some distant corner of the voidship, it was not.
"Iron mon-keigh!" his voice boomed, spinning the unit away from his task to hook a fist around the collar of his chest plating, weaponising knowledge of his precarious balance to lean him back and force him to stagger into the wall and be pinned. The snarl on his face was one of hatred, yet by that uncomplicated existence openly proclaimed vulnerability. The fact he had taken to petty name calling and careless damage only reinforced that fact.
"What am I to you?"
Hesitant to provoke him with misinterpretation, the list of potential answers was kept aside for a moment. "This unit requests clarification."
"Well, let us see. The teachings you devote yourself to demand my eradication, and yet here you are- pliant in my hands. You are taught to deafen yourself to the words of the xenos, and yet we have had any number of conversations to date. I am keen to know- am I a curiosity to you? A thing to observe while you have the chance, to prod and poke with no intention of indulging anything to completion, let alone satisfaction? Or am I perhaps here to prove to your fellow mon-keigh that their path is correct, informed by our inevitable- mutual- destruction in your idiocy." A snarled smile then crossed his face, the taunting look hollow compared to its usual enthusiasm even as his fingers flexed in a dramatic display of squeezing the main intake line of his respirator. "Or am I perhaps a contradiction that you are oblivious to, unable to differentiate between the feelings of your meat from the determination of your metal…"
Feeling his lungs seize as the automation attempted to cycle air that never came, he latched on for stability, staring into his eyes with an unchanging expression. Marazhai's pupils had contracted somewhat, revealing more of his iris colouration than could usually be witnessed.
"Remove the obstruction of the air intake and this unit will provide an answer."
With a hiss, he squeezed tighter, presumably then seeing the flaw in demanding answers while inducing a loss of consciousness. Sighing, he released the pipe, permitting a few seconds for him to recalibrate before snatching his hood. Leaning in close, sharp elbows resting on his shoulders in a way that no doubt tore into his robes, flicking the magnification lenses over his optic idly with a sickly tone to his voice. "Now, indulge me. Explain."
Briefly reducing the function of the optic to ignore the irritating distraction, he turned his head enough to compensate and maintain a direct visual contact. "The observation of the x-" he stalled, refiling the name allocation in a way that only seemed fair given context of his impending argument, noting the curiosity masked behind impatience in the face looming close to his own. "-of the unit Marazhai lends to new observational data of the unit Pasqal."
It had captured his focus, if not his approval yet- with a twitch to his eye that eluded to a smirk, he continued his infuriating assault on the magnifiers. "An unusual statement. Elaborate on… 'the unit Pasqal's' observations."
It was hard not to be irritated by the accumilating taunts, encouraging him to employ the division of such emotions from himself. Automatically announcing, "This unit has employed emotional vaulting procedures due to persistent irritating behaviour."
Had he not already removed such feelings, he'd have been annoyed further at the fact Marazhai stopped his fidgeting in response. He could've at least had the courtesy to continue after that effort. "Summary: this unit has taken note of numerous observations contradictory to it's prior stance."
"So-"
Clamping his hand over the impatient Drukhari's mouth to prevent him speaking further, he was consequently reminded of the damage dealt as the two damaged digits hung slack. Despite the damage preventing proper silencing, it enabled the same result with apparent compliance. "The prior stance concluded the teachings of the Biologis to be inferior and misguided, and that of the common attachment to the flesh to be deluded. Flesh could not be refined and moulded in the manner of metal- an inherent degredation and deterioration that cannot hope to compare. With observation…"
Despite his emotional containment, he felt dread. A combination of truth and fear combining to form an abomination assaulting his being, an internal conflict spanning a lifetime that had been entertaining to contemplate until now. Until offering it to a location it may be witnessed. The increasingly bored eyes watching him pressed him to proceed. Taking granular comfort from the nature of the man recieving the discussion and the near impossible threat of a betrayal from him, he continued.
"This unit has observed xenos processes that warrant the maintenance of flesh. Through the application of Drukhari cultural phenomena, there is merit to the study of the flesh."
"What does this mean, iron-"
Snapping, he allowed a static hiss to briefly distort his communication. "Name-calling is beneath you. Demand for cessation, communication will resume once applied." On being met with an exhausted silence that made his pulse deafening, he continued. "The statement was intended to notify an observation of compatibility in practices. This statement is not to be relayed further."
"My, my…" his voice practically purred, "your fear… Is your conviction truly so fragile in such an obscure statement?"
Allowing his eye to close, he bowed his head in a way that caused his hood to slip and obscure Marazhai from his vision. Rapidly, the fear melded into hollowness- if nothing more, he had hoped for the statement to yeild a conversation of interest to merit the risk it posed. Instead, it seemed…
"No- no! What is happening within you? This-" he trailed off in frustration, seeming to struggle articulating his feelings. "Why does your fear retreat in such a manner? Surely you had not hoped I would be pleased with this wittering-"
"It was this unit's belief that, by communicating an alteration in perception of practices, it would convey a keenness for discussion. Academically or recreationally. It would seem this statement is false, it will be logged-"
"You speak in such riddles. If I am forced to to entertain myself in the midst of further droning I will prise those sweet, shrill sounds from you once again-"
"Compliance with will identified. This will be satisfactory."
Somewhat taken aback, he allowed his weight to sway to one hip. "Satisfactory? Do you wish for me to make you scream once again?"
"Keenness to experience, observe and analyse expressed."
"…do you wish to learn from me?"
Taking his broken fingers in the opposite hand, he began inspecting the damage for repair. "An exchange. To learn and to educate."
Scoffing, the Drukhari settled his hands on his hips with an aggressive sneer. "And what could you possibly teach me?"
Extending his hand forward abruptly, he insisted plainly, "Repair." On recieving a confused look and hesitation to comply, he insisted again, "Repair."
"You mistake my intentions and my skill, I-"
"This is the education this unit will provide."
"And why would I allow a creature such as you to learn from me, let alone indulge the concept you could educate me? The nuances of my lifestyle would be lost on a mon-keigh, and there is no knowledge of value that you possess which I do not already know."
Allowing silence and contempt to build, he began the process of repair, returning his hand to primarily functional use- the loss of the spring prevented the flexing of the last knuckle on his index finger, and he mentally logged to locate a replacement for later. By the time he was done, Marazhai was leaning in to watch, some depraved concept visibly concocting in his mind.
"This is the education the unit will provide. Relay, edited: 'The nuances of my lifestyle would be lost on a xenos'. Relay end." Grasping his face with the now repaired digits, he squeezed, pressing the metal into the hollow of his cheek. "Magos is a title and knowledge bestowed to few. Unit Marazhai has previously identified and expressed keenness toward this unit's persistent suffering under the rites of augmentation. Unit Marazhai would learn to better utilise the blessed machine within his… lifestyle."
"If you intend to express yourself as my equal-"
"Equal to or greater than," he hissed, squeezing tightly enough to make him decide: part his jaw or grit his teeth and permit them to be broken. The former was selected, adjoined with a rough shake to pull free- hooking his fingers in Marazhai's mouth, he pinched behind his lower teeth and under his chin to create a steel loop that all but pierced him. Watching his attempts to wrench free at the indignity, biting fruitlessly into metal that would not yeild to mere bone and drooling as he was held, snarling as it was used to pull him down to an even height. "My lifestyle has been earned through the blessings of the Machine God and precise augmentation to craft the body into a unit even the great Marazhai has expressed appreciation and desire for," he spat, allowing a sarcasm protocol to emphasise the 'great'. "To aspire to perfection through agony is to aspire to this unit. You have much to learn. Proposal to begin education: a more satisfying purpose for that ignorant, sharp tongue."
The wording held a significantly more sexual implication than he had intended. Marazhai's eyes lit up on it being expressed- in both desire and amusement, all encapsulated in a desire to taunt. He refused to correct the implication for the risk it would be misconstrude as yeilding. A swift redirection back to the point at hand.
"The proposition is one of equal exchange. It requires mutual cessation of ignorance and mutual acceptance of equal role in varied manner or expression. It requires unit Marazhai learn to repair and maintain this unit in proper fashion and timeliness. It requires unit Pasqal learn to repair and maintain unit Marazhai in proper fashion and timeliness." Leaning closer, he used his free hand to tenderly wipe the line of drool from where it threatened to drip from his sharp jaw. "It includes a bond that, on severing, revokes all access to each unit beyond baseline social protocol. Is the proposition understood?"
Head held still by the grip on his jaw and pride, the resulting nod was felt rather than seen, followed promptly by a tongue openly dragged along the fingers in his mouth in some convoluted statement of… presumably an oddly expressed approval. Perhaps a request to speak. Withdrawing his hand before there was risk of drool seeping between the joints, he offered the opportunity, noting how Marazhai rubbed his jaw and almost hesitantly straightened- not through fear, but through something else. An unusual submissiveness.
"I will say, that was quite the experience. An intriguing proposition too, much akin to arrangements I have had before, although… I retain one question."
"Ask."
"You have not clarified what I am to you in satisfying enough terms."
Nodding, he pressed his fingertips together as he considered the best way to conclude what he had struggled to articulate. "You inspire curiosity for this unit's flesh, in ways that had been previously unrealised. In this way, in the parallells to the state of xenos, you are my flesh. A thing containing many marvels and yet neglected for a not insigificant quantity of time, now entering a period of research where it may be better enjoyed and appreciated. …does this satisfy your question?"
Seeming lost in contemplation for a moment, he finally returned to the conversation with a smirk. "Only if I am permitted to truly indulge us in our mutual education, Magos."
#uhhhhh im not tagging this. too nervous for it to be seen by wider world.#listen marazhai and pasqal both think theyre better than everyone else by merits of being freaks. i think they should do stuff about that#im gunna post this now before i can regret it

allow me to vent for a second.
i am really annoyed with Microsoft Office’s new ‘editing’ tool which does tons of style ‘corrections’ beyond just regular grammar and spell check. I would guess grammarly may have a lot of the same issues, but i’m not sure. my annoyance is that... in the new ‘editing’ tool, 1. it is very hard to turn off all the style ‘corrections’ which should realistically only be optional since they aren’t actually a matter of good or bad writing, and 2. these style corrections are very clearly geared toward specific forms of writing (business/school) which means when applying them to say personal articles you write or fictional stories, they can push ‘correction’ suggestions on you which completely ruin the intent you were aiming for. And when all you want to do is quickly double check you made no typos, and made no grammar mistakes, instead it highlights dozens (to hundreds) of other areas that actually need no corrections.
I tried to edit a novel just to check for spelling/grammar errors, and it wanted to correct hundreds of things which were style-only. Like X isn’t good for resumes (no kidding its a NOVEL), maid isn’t gender neutral (yes its not because this is a novel choosing words for specific effects not a work document), trying to change certain comma’d lists from “smart and diligent, cold and ruthless” into “smart, and diligent, cold, and ruthless” which... novels break up sentences in specific stylistic ways to make the writing read/flow a specific way... to move the commas in this case would ruin the rhythm the author wanted you to read it in. Basically... the ‘style corrections’ tool was giving me hundreds of not-real errors to sort through, slowing down me immensely, and these style corrections Aren’t True Errors. They’re useful OPTIONAL features, if you’re writing say a work document or resume and need to word yourself professionally. They absolutely butcher fictional writing, and I’m guessing if you wrote a literary analysis this tool would also be giving a ton of not-real-errors to correct every time you use a quote from the literary work. :c
:c :c :c
On the one hand, I’m very happy such new tools exist to help people figure out how to stylistically word themselves better. The skill of figuring out how to word something professionally in a work setting can be difficult, and its good as a tool to offer.
But the fact these tools seem to slant that way Mandatorily and require so much tech skill to turn off (I had to go in and dig to turn most of these off and i still have so many accidentally turned on i’m still getting 50-200 false-errors flagged per writing piece I proofread), i cannot imagine is going to have a good effect on people’s abilities to learn how to creatively write moving forward. Or for people to be self-aware of how varied language effects your impression on your reader. And since a specific company, specific software, is the ‘guide’ being forced for correcting one’s writing stylistically, of course that can always lead to new biases in writing overall. The biases the software was made with, that the designers inherently had and were never questioned for, and people will ‘correct’ their work to reflect those software internal biases. And so while to a degree, the ‘style corrections’ will help people write more professional technical less uninclusive writing, the dependency on a software to decide what is correctly those things will mean some biases in the system will reflect into everyone’s writing using it if not proof read for that by the writer personally. TLDR: while such stylistic tools are helpful in the way another pair of eyes are in a writing group, beware of relying on them as the end all be all of correct. The software is inherently biased toward specific types of prose which your writing may not benefit from, and any inherent biases that are uninclusive or unhelpful may bleed into the software corrections so any corrections should always be read over by YOU later to make sure the writing is actually doing what is intended and not something wrong.
And then, the other criticism: as USUAL microsoft office still flags a lot of grammar as incorrect which is in fact correct, so i still have to double check all of its grammar-flagged areas and fix them myself if they are wrong (since microsoft office at least half the time suggests an incorrect fix). So writers are going to STILL need the skill of understanding grammar enough to proofread their own documents, since these ‘correction tools’ are still not fully reliable in that aspect (except now writers will need to sort through grammar errors they need to fix themselves AND a bunch of flagged-stylistic stuff which may have been completely purposeful and needs no changes). :/
basically, critically read, and always proofread your own writing and edits others (and especially Programs) make to your writing. Programs have their own built in biases which you can’t just assume are perfect, and as always at least with microsoft office lol i’m still seeing it tag a lot of things as ‘errors’ that either aren’t errors or need to be corrected in a Different way than microsoft office suggests.
Anyway. Does anyone have a guide to point me to, for turning off ALL of microsoft’s style-corrections? I only need the spell check and grammar check (and the grammar check as usual I still end up needing to fix but at least sometimes it highlights the weird areas so I can find them faster).
#rant#im sorry i am just. so utterly annoyed with it#so you know how ai programs tend to be racist? because they're designed by either#racist teams or by ai learning that interacts with the real world which already has inherent discrimination#so the ai copies that discrimination? (see facial recognition ai and how discriminatory that is)#well i imagine such biases likely bleed into most software. as the world has racism. and companies are never perfect at eliminating it#within their own functioning (even though many strive to minimize it)#so microsoft office having a style corrector. that is meant to check biased language. slightly concerns me#because while at face value its somewhat useful (especially for people using he/she to learn THEY is a thing etc)#if people rely on such tools without critical thinking? they could be using the softwares biases unaware they've let it put in#its own biased language.

Compassion as the Source of Happiness
by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama
THE PURPOSE OF LIFE IS TO STRIVE FOR HAPPINESS
We are here; we exist and we have the right to exist. Even non-sentient beings like flowers have the right to exist. If negative force is exerted against them, then, on a chemical level, flowers repair themselves to survive. But more than that, we human beings including insects, even amoebas, the smallest beings are considered sentient beings. And as sentient beings, we have even more mechanisms to help us survive.
Things that can move under their own will or desire, that’s what a “sentient being” means, according to the discussions that I’ve had with scientists. “Sentient” doesn’t necessarily mean being conscious or being human on a conscious level. Actually it’s difficult to define what “consciousness” or “conscious” means. Usually it means the clearest aspect of the mind, but then, is it that there is no consciousness when we are semiconscious or unconscious? Do insects have it? Maybe it’s better to speak of “cognitive faculty” rather than consciousness.
In any case, the main point that we are referring to here by cognitive faculty is the ability to experience feelings: pain, pleasure, or neutral feelings. Actually, pleasure and pain, and happiness and unhappiness, are things that we need to examine in more depth. For example, every sentient being has the right to survive and, for survival, this means having a desire for happiness or comfort: that’s why sentient beings strive to survive. Therefore, our survival is based on hope – hope for something good: happiness. Because of that, I always conclude that the purpose of life is happiness. With hope and a happy feeling, our body feels well. Therefore, hope and happiness are positive factors for our health. Health depends on a happy state of mind.
Anger, on the other hand, is based on a sense of insecurity and brings us fear. When we encounter something good, we feel safe. When something threatens us, we feel insecure and then we become angry. Anger is a part of the mind that defends itself from what harms our survival. But anger itself makes us feel bad and so, ultimately, it is bad for our health.
Attachment is an element that is helpful for survival. So, even a plant, without any conscious element, still has some chemical aspect that causes it to protect itself and helps its growth. Our body, on a physical level, is the same. But, as humans, our body also has a positive element on the emotional level that brings us to have attachment to someone or attachment to our own happiness. Anger, on other hand, with its element of causing harm, pushes us away from things including happiness. On a physical level, the pleasure that happiness brings is good for the body; while anger and the unhappiness it causes is harmful. Therefore, from the perspective of the pursuit of survival, the purpose of life is to have a happy life.
This is the basic human level that I am speaking about; I am not speaking about the religious, secondary level. On the religious level, of course there are different explanations of the purpose of life. The secondary aspect is actually quite complicated; therefore, it is better to talk just on the basic human level.
WHAT IS HAPPINESS?
Since our goal and the purpose of life is happiness, what is happiness? Sometimes physical suffering can even bring a deeper sense of satisfaction like with an athlete after a grueling workout. So “happiness” means mainly a sense of deep satisfaction. The object of life or our goal, then, is satisfaction.
Happiness, sadness or suffering – for these, there are two levels: a sensorial level and a mental level. The sensorial level is common with tiny mammals, even insects – a fly. In a cold climate, when the sun comes out, a fly shows a happy aspect: it flies around nicely. In a cold room, it slows down: it shows a sign of sadness. But, if there is a sophisticated brain, then there is even a stronger sense of sensorial pleasure. In addition, though, our sophisticated brain is the largest in size and, therefore, we also have intelligence.
Consider the case of humans who feel no physical threats. They have a happy, comfortable life, good friends, salary, and name. But, even then, we notice that some millionaires, for example – they feel that they are an important part of society, but often these people as persons are very unhappy persons. On a few occasions I have met very rich, influential people who showed a very troubled sense that, deep inside, they had a feeling of loneliness, stress and worry. So, on the mental level, they have suffering.
We have a marvelous intelligence, so the mental level of our experience is more dominant than is the physical level. Physical pain can be minimized or subdued by it. As a small example, some time ago I developed a serious illness. It was very painful in my intestines. At that time, I was in Bihar, the poorest state of India and I passed through Bodh Gaya and Nalanda. There, I saw many very poor children. They were collecting cow dung. They had no education facilities and I felt very sad. Then, near Patna, the capital of the state, I had a lot of pain and sweating. I noticed one old sick person, one sick man, wearing white cloth, very, very dirty. No one was taking care of that person; it was really very sad. That night in my hotel room, my physical pain was very severe, but my mind was thinking of those children and that old man. That concern greatly reduced my physical pain.
Take for example those who train for the Olympic Games. They do very vigorous training, and no matter how much pain and hardship they experience, on the mental level they have happiness. Therefore, the mental level is more important than physical experience. Therefore, what is really important in life is happiness and satisfaction.
THE CAUSES OF HAPPINESS
Now, what are the causes of happiness? I think that since this body element goes well with a calm mind, not with a disturbed mind, therefore a calm mind is very important. It doesn’t matter our physical situation, mental calmness is most important. So, how can we bring about a calm mind?
Now, to get rid of all problems, that would be impractical; and to make the mind dull and forget about our problems, that doesn’t work either. We have to look clearly at our problems and deal with them, but at the same time keep a calm mind so that we have a realistic attitude and we are able to treat them well, deal with them well.
As for those who take tranquillizers – well, I have no experience. I don’t know if, at the time when people take tranquillizers, their intelligence is sharp or dull; I have to ask. For example, in 1959, when I was in Mussoorie, my mother or maybe it was somebody else was disturbed and had a lot of anxiety: the sleep was disturbed. The doctor explained that there were some drugs that they could take, but this would make the mind a little dull. I thought at that time that that’s not good. On one side, you have a little calmness of mind, but on the other side, if the effect is dullness, this is no good. I prefer another way. I prefer having the intelligence fully functional and attentive and alert, but not disturbed. Undisturbed mental calmness is best.
For this, compassionate human affection is really important: the more compassionate our mind is, the better our brain functions. If our mind develops fear and anger, then when that happens, our brain functions more poorly. On one occasion I met a scientist who was over eighty years old. He gave me one of his books. I think it was called We Are Prisoners of Anger, something like that. While discussing his experience, he said that when we develop anger toward an object, the object appears very negatively. But ninety per cent of that negativeness is in our mental projection. This was from his own experience.
Buddhism says the same. When negative emotion develops, we can’t see reality. When we need to make a decision and the mind is dominated by anger; then chances are, we will make the wrong decision. No one wants to make a wrong decision, but at that moment, the part of our intelligence and brain that functions to differentiate right from wrong and make the best decision, that works very poorly. Even great leaders experience it like that.
Therefore, compassion and affection help the brain to function more smoothly.
Secondarily, compassion gives us inner strength; it gives us self-confidence and that reduces fear, which, in turn, keeps our mind calm. Therefore, compassion has two functions: it causes our brain to function better and it brings inner strength. These, then, are the causes of happiness. I feel it is like that.
Now other faculties, of course, are also good for happiness. Everybody likes money, for example. If we have money, then we can enjoy good facilities. Usually, we consider these the topmost important things, but I think it’s not like that. Material comfort can come through physical effort, but mental comfort has to come through mental effort. If we go to a shop and offer money to the shopkeeper and say that we want to buy peace of mind, they will say they have nothing to sell. Many shopkeepers will feel that this is something mad and they will laugh at us. Some injection or pill can maybe bring temporary happiness or calmness of mind, but not at the fullest level. We can see with the example of counseling that we need to tackle emotions through discussion and reasoning. Thus, we must use a mental approach. Therefore whenever I give talks, I say that we modern people think too much of external development. If we pay attention only to that level, that’s not enough. Genuine happiness and satisfaction must come from within.
The basic elements for that are compassion and human affection, and these come from biology. As an infant, our survival depends solely on affection. If affection is there, we feel safe. If it’s not there, we feel anxiety and insecure. If we become separated from our mother, we cry. If we are in our mother’s arms and held tight, warmly, then we feel happy and we’re quiet. As a baby, this is a biological factor. One scientist for instance, my teacher, a biologist who is involved with anti-nuclear violence – he told me that after birth, a mother’s physical touch for several weeks is very important for enlarging the baby’s brain and development. It brings a feeling of safety and comfort and this leads to proper development of physical growth, including the brain.
So, the seed of compassion and affection is not something that comes from religion: it comes from biology. We each came from our mother’s womb and each of us survived due to our mother’s care and affection. In the Indian tradition, we consider birth from a lotus in a pure land. That sounds very nice, but perhaps the people there have more affection for lotuses than for people. So being born from a mother’s womb is better. Then we are already equipped with the seed of compassion. So, those are the causes of happiness.

The automated path to social and ecological destruction
In the mid-1980s, Max Headroom, a “computer-generated” TV personality with a zany sense of satire and an electronically altered stutter, became the world's first Artificial Intelligence (AI) superstar. Back then, of course, computer technology was not yet up to this mammoth task, so the intelligence behind Max Headroom, just like the actor portraying him on television, was very much human.
Max Headroom was from a dystopian future in which the world is ruled by an oligarchy of television networks. In a way, reality not only met but exceeded the show's predictions. Sure, our lives are not controlled by “advertising-mad” TV companies, but they are being overwhelmed by equally advertising-mad social media companies that monitor and record the minutiae of our behavior.
Moreover, technology has advanced so much over the past 35 years that the emergence of a computer-generated TV presenter like Max Headroom would hardly surprise anyone today. In fact, we already have machines convincingly acting like humans - so much so that we can create the entire computer-generated worlds for our entertainment and fill them with seemingly intelligent characters.
The advances in computing power, robotics and AI have enormous implications for society. Most importantly, although we are still some way away from becoming humans obsolete in the workforce, much of human labor has already become surplus to requirements.
Factories that can function with zero or minimal human intervention (known as “lights-out manufacturing”) are but one visible example of this. A couple of generations ago, a typical factory would employ hundreds, if not thousands, of workers. Today, many manufacturing facilities are more or less completely automated. The FANUC manufacturing facility in Japan, for example, functions like a robotic womb, using robots to build robots without the need for human intervention.
While full automation is still relatively rare, partial automation is everywhere - from agriculture to manufacturing. The service sector, which had long been viewed as the one sector which would continue to create jobs no matter what, is also falling prey to automation.
This can clearly be seen in the diminishing number of service sector workers required to generate wealth. In the 1960s, telecoms giant AT&T was worth $ 267bn in today's money and three-quarters of a million people. Google, in contrast, is worth considerably more ($ 370bn) but employs far fewer humans, only about 55,000.
Innovations that reduce in the service sector needing fewer human workers have undoubtedly brought some benefits. For example, during the coronavirus lockdowns, millions with broadband connections were able to work from home and connect with their loved ones without breaking physical distancing rules - something that would not have been possible just a few decades ago. But these obvious benefits should not cause us to ignore the many drawbacks of such technologies.
At their best, new technologies work in synergy with humans, freeing us from drudgery and bolstering our mental capabilities. At their worst, they force us to behave more like machines in order to compete with them and keep our jobs.
However, with the way our economies are currently structured, the fruits of automated labor have largely gone to multinational corporations, their shareholders and top executives - the feudal class of the information age.
Unlike what has been predicted in countless dystopian science fiction novels and movies, humans have not been enslaved by robots. Rather, high-tech machines became the new slave or serf class. They work relentlessly, accurately and obediently without needing sleep, paid holidays, health insurance or organized unions. No wonder they are so loved by their masters.
The working classes, from factory workers to middle-class professionals, meanwhile, have seen their status corroded, with a growing number unable to find work or forced to labor under rapidly deteriorating conditions.
This process has been a long time coming and warnings about how the “cybernation” of our economies would create “a permanent impoverished and jobless class” date back to at least the 1960s.
It is a testament to the genius of the proponents of new technologies that the worsening economic reality and prospects of ordinary people have triggered far more xenophobia than technophobia, with people blaming migrants and foreign workers rather than machines and computer programs, for the disappearance of jobs and societal protections.
Socially, the destruction caused by automation has started to outweigh its constructive potential. The widening gap between the productivity of capital and labor, along with deregulation and tax avoidance by the super-rich, have led to a devastating chasm between the haves and have-nots, fomenting popular unrest and social conflict.
Thanks to unprecedented technological progress, income and wealth inequalities today appear to be higher than they have ever been at any time in human history, even though the material wealth of the poor has risen.
While many of us are primed to see the green potential of new technologies, one under-appreciated and overlooked aspect of high-paced automation is its devastating environmental impact, which looks likely to multiply in the future.
Today's economy produces massively more per unit of human labor than ever before, which leads to enormous levels of overproduction, even if each individual item is produced more efficiently.
Keeping people in work or creating new jobs means that this overproduction needs to be matched by an equivalent level of overconsumption. This overcapacity is a major factor behind our shift towards a throwaway, disposable culture.
Moreover, new technological tools and automation have become such an integral part of modern labor that the ecological footprint of work has skyrocketed. This is also visible, paradoxically, in the most ancient of jobs - farming. For example, although agriculture only employs about four percent of the European labor force, it accounts for about a tenth of Europe's greenhouse gas emissions.
Little wonder, then, that a growing body of research indicates that shortening the working week would be good not only for workers' health and wellbeing but also that of the environment. Shaving a day off our working week would reduce our carbon footprint by as much as 30 percent, according to one study that is almost a decade old.
The above is not an argument for technophobia, but a plea for techno-realism. To gain the maximum benefit for humanity from technological progress, we must move beyond the narrow focus on economics and profit maximization and look at the wider social and environmental picture.
No major new technology should be rolled out before a thorough social, environmental and ethical assessment has found that its potential benefits outweigh its potential costs. Some sectors, especially areas where human contact brings with it intangible social and emotional benefits, could be partially de-automated to preserve and create jobs and reduce alienation.
More fundamentally, the fruits of automation need to be more evenly distributed. This can be accomplished through truly progressive taxation, taxing capital at a higher rate of labor and introducing such schemes as a universal basic income for everyone.
In the throes of the Great Depression, the legendary economist John Maynard Keynes, in an essay titled Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren, cast aside the economic pessimism of the time and predicted that we can inverse our working life, with two days of work and a Five-day weekend, or three-hour daily shifts of work, within a century.
The fact that this is not our reality today, nearly 90 years after the publication of Keynes' essay, is not due to a failure in his foresight but to our failure to exploit our economic bounty for the good of all.
“There is no country and no people, I think, who can look forward to the age of leisure and of abundance without a dread. For we have been trained too long to strive and not to enjoy, ”Keynes presciently foretold.
It is high time that our societies overcame this dread and that we collectively strive to enjoy our unprecedented material abundance through the pursuit of happiness for the many rather than the pursuit of unfathomable for the few.

Hi there! (I love this blog btw, God bless) I'm not an opera expert, hence the anon, but a theatre buff who would very much like to hear your thoughts on Brett Dean's Hamlet if you feel like it ...
Greetings, Anon! Thank you for the compliment on my blog, and thanks for sending me a question! I like to chat and discuss stuff.
I’m not sure if you’ve seen Brett Dean’s Hamlet or not so I am not sure how much context I need to give for my remarks. I will take a stab at this, though.
The first thing I’d observe about Dean’s Hamlet is that it assumes its audience is already very familiar with the play. I think it’s watchable even if you do not know the play well, but sort of like Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, it is aimed at people who have probably read the play in school and seen multiple stage performances and/or movie adaptations of it, and who may be able to quote some of the more famous lines from memory. Hamlet is one of the most performed and most adapted pieces of theater in the world; Brett Dean and the librettist Matthew Jocelyn are well aware of that, and do not respond by trying to make the ultimate, most perfect adaptation, but rather by making something new yet recognizable, with plenty of in-jokes.
As you may know, they sort of put the text(s) through a blender. Many famous lines and familiar characters were completely cut out; other lines were re-ordered and re-assigned. A chorus, nonexistent in the Shakespeare play, was added; as well as making up the court of Elsinore, it functions like a classic Greek chorus, commenting on and amplifying the action, and also like an extension of the orchestra, sometimes adding eerie vocal effects to the overall tapestry of sound in the auditorium. The roles of Horatio and Marcellus are greatly reduced in the Dean/Jocelyn Hamlet while the presence of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern is increased in proportion to (what is left of) the rest of the play.
Probably my favorite thing about the Dean/Jocelyn adaptation of Hamlet is the fact that they deliberately selected bits and pieces of language from all three of the textual witnesses, including the so-called “bad quarto.” To back up and explain a little bit (with apologies if you know this stuff already): there is no one text of Hamlet. As with all the rest of Shakespeare’s plays, we have no manuscript in Shakespeare’s hand. What we have are various early printed editions of Shakespeare’s plays that could plausibly, in one way or another, have derived from a manuscript (or multiple manuscripts!) written by Shakespeare. In the case of Hamlet, there’s the 1603 quarto edition (Q1), the 1604 quarto (Q2), and the version included in the 1623 First Folio of Shakespeare’s plays (F1). The texts of Q2 and F1 are largely similar to each other and most modern editions of Hamlet are based on a melding of them, but Q1 is substantially shorter than the other two texts, a couple of the characters have different names, and some of the speeches are chopped up in ways that seem clearly erroneous (Hamlet’s “To be or not to be” speech is notoriously muddled in Q1). Thus Q1 has come to be known as a “bad quarto” and has traditionally been disparaged and discarded by editors trying to piece together an authoritatively Shakespearean version of Hamlet.
There are various theories of how Q1 came to be so “bad.” I did my undergraduate thesis on the so-called “bad quarto” of Romeo and Juliet, so I spent a few months reading as much scholarship on the “bad quartos” as I could get my hands on. Some of the “bad quarto” theories are kind of crackpot. The generally-accepted explanation for how these texts came into existence, though, is piracy by memorial reconstruction: the idea is that a couple of actors in Shakespeare’s company would go to a printer and recite as much of the play as they could from memory. They would report their own parts pretty reliably, and they would have fair-to-good recall of other actors’ lines from the scenes they were in, but their recall would degrade for scenes where they were offstage. Moreover, cuts and other changes to the text might have been made in the theater in the process of bringing the play to the stage; these would be reflected in the “bad quarto” but not in other versions of the text deriving more directly from a manuscript penned by Shakespeare. On the plus side, the actors would sometimes supply stage directions in the “bad quartos” that were never specified in other textual witnesses, giving us some valuable clues about the action Shakespeare’s original audiences might actually have seen on the stage.
In recent years, there’s been some interest in reviving the so-called “bad quartos” as performance texts, with an eye towards accessing more “theatrical” versions of Shakespeare’s plays: my interest in the “bad quartos” was first hooked when I met a scholar of early modern performance studies who was directing a “bad quarto” performance of Romeo and Juliet at Oxford in the late ′90s. After finishing my Romeo and Juliet undergrad thesis, I headed off to a graduate program known for its strengths in textual studies, intending to continue in this academic vein. I actually ended up changing fields for my dissertation but I took enough graduate coursework in bibliography, textual criticism, and scholarly editing to achieve geekgasm when Dean and Jocelyn had characters alternately singing “solid” and “sullied”—a reference to a notorious editorial crux in Hamlet, one of the most famous scholarly editing problems of all time. (Here is just one person’s take on the matter.) I really enjoyed the fact that they not only used bits and pieces of Hamlet Q1 on an equal footing with pieces of Q2 and F1 but also took the spirit of a “theatrical” reading of the bad quartos as justification for their adaptation: in cutting and reordering the Hamlet scripts and reassigning many words to other characters, they were not doing anything that Shakespeare’s own company of actors didn’t do. (They did a lot more of it, though!)
Witty and intriguing little turns in the Dean/Jocelyn adaptation flew by too quickly for me to remember them all, but I remember having the impression that their version of Hamlet did a number of things to foreground the theatrical themes of the play. For instance, the whole episode of Hamlet’s trip to England was cut, but the play-within-a-play received lavish attention. (Amber Treadway composed an excellent tweet on “the most meta players scene ever.”) One tiny detail that I especially liked: Hamlet’s line “Do not saw the air too much with your hand,” from his instructions to the players, was relocated to the final duel, where it became a taunt from Hamlet to Laertes, calling attention to the aesthetic aspect of Laertes’ performance as a fencer.
By reducing the cast of soloists, minimizing some of the secondary roles, and completely cutting out all references to the Norwegian threat to the Danish state, Dean and Jocelyn shaped their version of Hamlet into a drama of two interlinked families. Hamlet, the Ghost, Claudius, and Gertrude make up one of the families; Polonius, Laertes, and Ophelia make up the other; and the two are linked by Hamlet and Ophelia’s broken romance. This adaptation foregrounds Gertrude’s tenderness towards Ophelia and Laertes; up until Hamlet gave them reasons to hate him, after all, Gertrude was planning and assuming that she would soon welcome them as new relatives by marriage. Throughout the Glyndebourne staging directed by Neil Armfield, Gertrude can frequently be seen literally reaching out to other characters, touching and caressing them; she is, in this version, a dedicated peacemaker, striving—up until the moment of her own poisoning, when she realizes that her husband intends to kill her son—to hold the court together.
Another interesting presence in this version was the triply-cast role of the ghost of old Hamlet, the first player, and the gravedigger, played memorably by Sir John Tomlinson for the premiere production. I liked the fact that the opera made use of role doubling, a longstanding theatrical practice that is believed to have been used by Shakespeare’s acting company. Besides being one of the elements that made the opera feel very “theatrical” to me, it also allowed the ghost of Hamlet’s father to sort of implicitly or symbolically stick around as an ally to Hamlet. The roles of the first player and the gravedigger stand outside the two-family structure I outlined above, but they fit into another structure of Dean’s Hamlet: Team Hamlet vs. Team Claudius. As Hamlet’s bonds with his immediate family and his girlfriend are rapidly eroded, he turns to figures like Horatio, Marcellus, the players, and the gravedigger for trustworthy information and companionship. As I already mentioned, the roles of Horatio and Marcellus are minimized in this adaptation, so the roles of the first player and the gravedigger take on proportionally greater importance (even though their lines are also reduced).
Those are my thoughts on Brett Dean’s Hamlet, or at least, as many thoughts as I can write up in an evening. Feel free to send me your thoughts too, or ask follow-up questions!

I’ve always been a fan of Aglianico. Although in America, pickings can be slim, and–as it is considered a variety of great aging potential–often moderately old. Not that there’s anything wrong with old wines, not at all. But feeling these wines in their bright freshness–at their source–and seeing all the measures taken to PRESERVE that youthful fruit is something quite overlooked when only exposed to wines developing tertiary. There were several side benefits to experiencing the Aglianico at Tenuta Del Meriggio. First of all, it exposed me to Taurasi, the very special DOCG dedicated to Aglianico, but nearly overshadowing these powerful reds are the ridiculous whites produced alongside: Greco (Tufo DOCG) and Fiano (Avellino DOCG). It should also be mentioned a couple ancient, indigenous grapes are also produced: Coda di Volpe as a DOC and Falanghina, which Americans are probably far more familiar with in relation to wines from Campania–at least when I mentioned I was traveling there, Falanghina was the first word out of my wine-friends’ mouths.
While we’re on the subject of *Compania knowledge* I should mention what EYE knew about it going in. 99% of my exposure in several decades of drinking wine in the U.S. had been under the Feudi Di San Gregorio label. This is a brand fairly common in the US and pretty much represented the extent of my experience save for a few outliers over the years. As part of my research WHILE in Campania, I picked up this same label off a local shelf just to see how it compared to the stuff I was being exposed to at a boutique winery. The results were shocking. It is–quite literally–supermarket plonk, nowhere NEAR exuding the sort or lavish fruit and mineral experienced at Meriggio. And to think I have a fair amount of this in my cellar!
The other thing I always do before such trips to relatively unknown regions is to snoop around what others say. I went through my library of Usual Suspects on all things encyclopedic to wine and came away with not much more than I already knew. While most entries were promising of decent quality and variable nuance, most indicated the best-known brand to stick to as Mastroberardino, whose ‘Radici’ bottling I ALSO experimented with while in Naples and it, too, displayed the kind of dull, safe normal-ness and un-inspiring fruit the Feudi did. An interesting aside here is this is almost IDENTICAL to the VERY BRIEF wiki-page on Taurasi, which indicates in its scant dozen-sentences the appellation was relatively unknown until early this century, where it has exploded to over 200 labels BUT–as if tearing a page directly from Karen McNeil’s book–lists solely the afore-mentioned Mastro as the only “wine-of-interest”.
Well then. I’m here to change your mind about that.
Loyal readers will know I am not one to allow *the story* to over-shadow the stuff under the cork, but one of the beauties of spending an entire week on a winery is the ability to really get to know the proprietors, their ideals, and their goals. Keep in mind this was not a week on a region, or on a variety, not even within a consorzio of producers, but an entire week on a single winery. Oh, but there are way MORE benefits. Completely immersing oneself in the dining and sources of dining in a very tight area sheds light on the symbiotic relationship between the wine and local cuisine. And in gastronomic cultures this old, the association is obvious. Not to be ignored are the local sights and sounds, and spending an entire week nearly one-on-one with the proprietors of a local business which depends on regional intricacies allows ample time to *stop and smell the roses* as it were, with plentiful side-trips to sights both adapted-to naturally and created as part of societal history. From the rocky switchbacks overlooking the colorful Amalfi coast to narrow hillside villages in the shadow of Vesuvius–castles and churches and palaces and museums in between–all proudly reflecting their stitches in the fabric of a region, and all benefiting from the bounty–and climate–of the Mediterranean. Because we’re here to talk about food & wine, remember?
Tenuta Del Meriggio is a winery born from a life-long interest in wine by a family dedicated to–and still fully immersed in–the on-the-street healthcare industry. Both Bruno and Nunzio Pizza dreamed of making wine themselves one day and this rocky little hillside above Avellino is the fruition of their physical–and financial–dedication to this goal. No expense has been spared in this state-of-the-art winery, and it shares many complements with its dug-deep hillside location. The sticky volcanic clay holds moisture indefinitely, translating to wet natural cellar walls producing near-100% humidity and shiver-inducing year-round temperatures, but also hampering off-season cultivation of the stony slopes and contributing constantly to vine-concern–especially in springtime. Unlike some wine-production facilities I have been inside of in Italy, this place is near-sterile in cleanliness, the equipment computer-controlled and several of the pieces geeky enough to have a function outside the grasp of someone fairly familiar with winery-processes.
I won’t go into a whole lot of detail about the winery. It’s brand new; It’s beautiful; The inside of almost all wineries is identical–the age and layout and whether the floor-drains work the only variables. Two or three things did pique my interest enough to bear mentioning though. They have a water-reclamation system installed downhill of the crush-pad. If you’ve ever worked in a winery, you KNOW the incredible amount of water used–not consumed, used–in keeping everything flowing. This water all has to go somewhere and it doesn’t really have anything WRONG with it. So a series of ponds and sumps and a selection of plants and gravels produce not only water which can be used as irrigation on the rare occasion, but re-used in the winery for cleaning. Another wish-list item I will mention is their own cold-room. Probably 2000-2500 sqft–not to mention the 20′ high ceilings–it is capable of (at least) 0° Celsius and is used in both pre-production fruit and post-production bottle stability. Lastly, I loved the Austrian-oak (not variable top) upright fermenters where the Aglianico spends upwards of 45 days in primary. They are big though–I mean what the hell even IS 100hl??? But they are very pretty and I kinda want one.
Are the wines organic or the property biodynamic? No. But here’s the thing you have to realize about European wineries: EVERYTHING is automatically far more “organic” than American agriculture–even without the badge–and EVERYONE is striving to both grow grapes and produce wines with as little chemical sleight-of-hand as possible. Americans have this weird black-and-white on-off switch when it comes to “organic”, and I’ve seen their faces when they ask and get the simple answer, “No.” If you stick around long enough for the FULL answer–and a complete understanding of wine-making approach in Europe–apparent is the fact the vineyard manager and winemaker are doing their best to minimize applications and additives, but a healthy vineyard is more important than an organic one and a healthy fermentation is more important than a natural one. This is the same argument I proffer constantly to the ‘Natural Wine’ crowd: There are no Natural Wines, only NATURALER wines. Being certified organic cuts hard into a wineries ability to compete in Italy, and honestly, the natives are just not as concerned about that word *officially* appearing on a label. Make sure your wines are being thoughtfully made, and vague titles won’t matter.
The winery itself sits up at about 1500 feet elevation on a fairly steep south-facing slope with various exposures of varying degrees for various small blocks of fruit. The exact town is Montemiletto, near the town of and in the province of Avellino, in the district of Irpinia–which is also the appellation? in the region of Campania. Sorry, the Irpinia part I never was quite able to get a handle on in terms of specific geographical boundaries, although it IS the appellation. Got that all straight? The Taurasi and Tufo DOCG’s are nearby at slightly lower elevations. The pecking order at this winery (and similar to others I have witnessed) is an “agronomist” (basically: vineyard manager)–and at Meriggio, Mr. Bruno Pizza is also an agronomist–who works year-round almost equally with the “oenologist” (they don’t really ever say ‘winemaker’), who here, is a rather famous Carmine Valentino and CLEARLY performing the duties which stateside would be called ‘Consulting Winemaker’ (the consulting part doesn’t translate, believe me I tried). Then there is the full-time on-site winemaker they also call an oenologist or sometimes ‘Technician’ who clearly is performing in the function we would call Assistant Winemaker. After that, it’s just a bunch of pruners, pickers and hose-draggers, the daily minutia of management I got to witness first-hand and let me tell you it differs NOT ONE SPECK from here in California. Tenuta Del Meriggio also has at the helm a Communicazione Commerciale or something something–a marketing director–by the name of Paolo Sibillo, a very focused but gregarious former boxer who speaks perfect English and naturally has his finger on everything from production and pricing to packaging and distribution. It’s quite a team, but we all know Nunzia runs the whole thing.
But how are the wines? I know you’re here for the wines. Let’s talk about the whites first. How beautiful these things were. Perfect with all the seafood we ate all over town at numerous restaurants. Everywhere, the Greco and Fiano came out. The latter far richer and rounder than the former, and naturally a favorite with the Chardonnay-drinkers in the crowd. The Greco is angular and lean, more akin to Riesling to me and was my favorite whenever the two were presented. A couple of notes about my notes which later proved themselves factually: First, I kept noting KMBS in the Greco. Turns out ‘Tufo” is the rock they quarry in the region to make the cobblestones and it has a very high sulfur content. There’s one. Secondly, I insisted the Greco was tannic. Turns out it has a very thin, delicate skin which actually GOES THROUGH the press mesh, creating a bit of skin-contact in the fermenters and with it, tannin. Lastly, I kept getting oak in the Fiano, even though it sees no oak (the reserve does). You would SWEAR there’s oak in it. In reality, this is a by-product of them freezing the grapes for 48 hrs before pressing. (remember that cold-room?) It creates a nutty, oaky, full mouthfeel while preserving the fruit. So I’m not crazy, after all.
18 irpinia coda di volpe DOC Big citrus and austerity but it kind of turned into a bit of sweetness, candy pie or something. Kinda dusty floral really really dusty… It’s a great standalone grape they only make a little bit of it most of it goes in the blend but it’s really sharp, acidic and has an interesting floral but yet teary softness to it that belies its intensity. 18 fiano di avellino (day 2) Creamy round vanilla nutty oak. Old worldy and full of applesauce, melon and kiwi. Green cleanness reverberates throughout the cellar funk. 18 fiano di avellino (day 3) I’m getting so much richness here, more than I got last night. It’s all cream soda in the nose nice Twinkie icing but not cream cheese frosting, no citrus, all chubby roundness. … Big round old world funk in the mouth, gritty soggy soil but a granular brightness. 17 fiano di avellino Nice and clean, none of the barnyard funk I get off the 18. Nice apple and peach little bit of spice, little cardamon… In the mouth full and rich again. I could sell endcaps of this to Chard drinker and convert them. It has all the full mouth feel that Chardonnay drinker, chablis drinker and sancerre drinker needs but also the acidity and the minerality doesn’t take a break. Mouthfeel goes on and on.
18 greco di tufo (day 2) Interesting funky nose, nice reduction and stewed fruit, good earthiness and body in nose, good mineral edgy sharp in nose: cream soda and sprite notes with KMBS? … In the mouth, full and rich, 13.5 guess: 14. Full and round, almost a seedy strawberry Sierra-berry goodness. Citrus rind edge sharp and cutting. Mid palate a lil thin then comes crashing back to almost tannic bitterness. A brilliant white wine. Absolutely world-class stuff. I love this wine. 18 greco di tufo (day 3) I thought I got a touch of potassium metabisulfite off the front this morning and it’s still here. I’m getting a lot more baking spice off of this one really interesting cinnamon and nutmeg and a pastry pastry cheese note… Ridiculous mouthfeel but not a California sort of atmosphere, a raspy and honest bitter and there’s no way to argue there is not tannin in this wine. This is a winter-time wine–it won’t keep you warm but it will keep you alive. 14 greco di tufo Bad vintage? A lot creamier nose… full mouthfeel, good pomplamousse and more applesauce, all your dreams are alive here, boys & girls, ridiculous acidity, crazy mineral. Solid mouthfeel for decades. This is not made as well as the 18 and I would love to taste the 18 at this age.
18 fiano di avellino selectione A little oak on this one but really not noticeable in the nose. I was expecting something more. Solid but it actually has come and gone the other direction from the non selection it’s really really light… Rich and full in the mouth but it doesn’t let you get too far down the road before all that mineral kicks in… all the Chardonnay drinkers in the room def prefer the non-selection. Bottled 2 months ago and the feel like it’s a little awkward at this moment. Still it’s brilliant brilliant stuff. 18 greco di tufo selectione This is clean and mellow in the nose I feel like some of the lovely stuff I like about the stainless steel has been eroded. I’m getting more potassium metabisulfite I feel like it might be really recently bottled? Tomato stem and water down honey in the mouth. Very mellow and smoothed out but you’ve got tannin still there. I’m sorry I’m just not the biggest fan of these selections which is pretty much par for the course with me. The regular bottlings have more fruit. To their credit although they are both very freshly bottled and and perhaps will settle down a little bit in 6-months.
15 irpania aglianico DOC Nice dense formidable Ruby with a barely faded edge staining with good legs… Beautiful & nails all the way through. Smooth down into a nice cherry reduction pomegranate where the chocolate tobacco is just pouring out of it even though it’s only 5. Nice green-briar but it’s a polished sort of briar. Acid is going to be there it’s just a breath in the background underneath all that cinnamon. In the mouth you can definitely taste the age. It has a crazy fruit to it but also a little bit of imbalance because the the tannins and the acidity are so huge, there’s a wall of dark fruit that lingers slightly behind it and is it saving grace. This needs about 4 hours in a decanter then you possibly could approach it. So much going on in the nose and in the finish that I feel sorry for the entry and middle. There is a really nice herb or herbaceous sort of rosemary oil thing going on in the finish that I could really get addicted to. A stupidly delicious wine. 14 taurasi aglianico DOCG Plain and elegant in the nose. Subdued at first. Dull briar fruit so huge, massive cherry luxardo finally blows up. So elegant in the mouth, mouth-wrackingly dry and acidic, I could literally drink this wine all day long I’m not going to fall into the crutch of comparing it to another region it’s just not fair. This is stupidly good, perfect barrel, good fruit. I will be a little bit concerned that maybe the fruit will not out live with the tannin but there’s gobs of it back there so it’s not really my place to say. 12 taurasi aglianico DOCG Showing a bit more garnet in the glass. Just a hint of brick at the edge. A little bit oxidized in the nose to be honest, creamy buttery big bread popcorn sort of nuances borderline on banana but not quite going there. Through all this nutty and reduced fruit shine calamata and Herbs de Provence notes. Ridiculous fruit, honestly more fruit than the 14 which would bode well for my question as to whether the fruit can outlive the tannin. 10 taurasi Aglianico DOCG Really starting to smooth there. Still all there but really starting to smooth out and the reduction on fruit is just absolutely gorgeous. Lithe and bitter and green, fruit a glorious bystander in the tertiary theme.
I know I was supposed to rant and rave about the Taurasi’s–and I did, to a point–but that little 2015 “regular” Irpinia DOC Aglianico was my wine of the day several times. I kept coming back to it as a benchmark for what the variety could do. I know it has zero barrique aging and was actually released LONG before it had this much bottle-age, but it is straight-up gorgeous. Funny thing is: later on in the week we attended a big formal dinner with local celebrities and notables. They served one red. I couldn’t believe it: My WINE OF THE WEEK: the 2015 Irpinia Aglianico. Good things come to those who wait.
And what the world needs now is more Greco and Aglianiaco.
These wines are available thru Siena Imports on the West Coast.

Getting to know Avellino I've always been a fan of Aglianico. Although in America, pickings can be slim, and--as it is considered a variety of great aging potential--often moderately old.

Did you ever make a friendship on this site that ever made you feel like you were being policed? You know from those ppl who strive for moral purity and call out others on their shit for “misbehaving” over pointless crap, like making sexual jokes, laughing at dark humor, finding fault where there isn’t, implying that u are a bad person just cause u said “bitch”, backed up with a 5 page essay over why your action was problematic, guilt-tripping u for wanting money and material wealth as if those things were evil and just overall being super sensitive and taking things personally? Cutting those ppl out feels quite desintoxicating, relieving! Like I can understand their viewpoints and offer enough empathy and support specially to people those who feel misunderstood and hurt, but that behaviour gets annoying over time cause a lot of what they say or do is useless and gets in the way of other people’s goals and brings the mood down, in the real world u can’t always be morally pure to get ahead, there’s competition, a jungle, mean people who won’t have mercy to get their way and you can’t apply those standards to everything, otherwise they will take advantage of you, and u will end up on tumblr once again disappointed and whining about how mean and ugly the world is when you could have gotten your act together and fought back. If you are expecting a saviour to come do all the dirty work for u then you are done for, cause he’s not gonna come (and if he does he will most likely be an illusion thats going to turn your world into an abusive relationship, why u think so many strong, powerful men who get shy, submissive spouses end up like that, he will always be in a favourable position and end up dominating everything cause the spouse has no initiative for anything, they are just there roaming in their dream world wishing things would get better but don’t do shit to make their situation better), you will simply continue to waste your life letting many valuable opportunities and experiences pass by and that fuckin sucks u know. It’s annoying, stupid, selfish even, there’s so much more to do with ur energy than spend it observing people’s shortcomings and pointing them out to fit your delusional ideals, it’s like these ppl are just emotional baggage that u have to constantly reassure with ur words and actions and yet they offer nothing in exchange except making u feel restrained and like carefully walking on broken glass shards cause u are afraid u might offend them with something.
Y’all know I was in a similar position years ago, crippling with unbearing anxiety and depression, I wanted to get out of there and did it, I didn’t stay in a bubble to protect my inner world while ignoring realities like many people on this site do. It really, REALLY pisses me off how so many people on this site live in some false delusion that their feelings, opinions and ideologies really matter that much that they will change society to a state of utopian moral grandness when they barely even leave the house, can’t stand being in the real world with their own two feet for more than a little while and get intimidated or even demonize people who are self-confident, successful, work hard for themselves and provide for their friends/families, then excusing their own behaviours with “not everyone’s neurotypical karen” “MY ILLNESS, MY FEELINGS, THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND MY PAIN, MY STRUGGLES!!” to not do anything, continue living like that and followed by making pathetic memes to make ppl feel sorry for them.
Like jesus fucking christ bitch, stop, why is it that u dislike having self-respect so much to make others pity you, and why when someone has a positive confident attitude you have to shit on them with your condescending ass, like please develop and grab onto positive feelings more for once and focus more in your surroundings, other ppl! You are already in touch with your inner states TOO much to the point of overthinking and to complete inaction, so its KEY to focus externally, help other ppl, even something as minimal as asking how was ur day to ur friend helps, tell a joke, make ppl laugh, observe what they like/dislike, why spend so much time circulating in ur own negative emotions and overthinking to the point that u can’t function properly, ignore those thoughts! Kill ur brain, shut it down if it’s blasting u with unnecessary thoughts, If someone’s mean to u just think: fuck them! Don’t put your self-worth in others cause that ALWAYS has to lie within u, they don’t know shit about u, and besides, chances are that the ppl u think will make fun of you are actually afraid of u too but because they don’t want to offend u, they are not sure as to how to deal with u and when things don’t go well they get just as frustrated as u might be, ppl generally have good intentions but they can read you by how u dress, your facial expressions, your way of walking, your speech, those are all cues to who you are and it’s easy to tell when someone is insecure and shy, with those signals the other person is just gonna think they will give u a hard time, even though they don’t want to hurt u. Like bitch even if u don’t have a skinny body or a pretty face, a smile and positive attitude always makes the difference, people will always prefer that over someone who while pretty, sexy or hot has a shitty selfish attitude and just doesn’t make a good impact on anyone. Like just fuckin engage in the world in a meaningful way cause you just can’t ignore it and stay in a bubble expecting your life to get magically better, it won’t be easy at first and u will screw up definitely, but with constant practice you will get used to interacting with others in a more healthy manner and feel more confident to say “i can do this” and eventually exert control over what goes around u, stop disrespecting urself reblogging self-depreciating memes, policing ppl, ignoring reality and get to the action, analyze, observe, make objective conclusions of your situation and act on them, your feelings are not entirely ur compass for decision making, cause just know it, the world doesn’t give a shit about ur feelings until they see you can stand up for yourself, provide love, affection to others and give them the sense of security they need to trust you, don’t be someone’s emotional baggage please cause that’s just rock bottom and you'd do so much good to yourself and others by getting out of there, not staying in it like many posts on tumblr might encourage you, cause that’s just... yikesssss.

Top Meat Smoking Mistakes
Perhaps you have heard of folks having meat smoking horror tales?
You can not live life without understanding, and also you can not learn without making errors. All of these are fantastic methods, and some are less clear as you'd believe.
Overall this is a complete manual on errors which were created by others and myself while smoking.
When starting, it is an actual learning experience, and there is so much happening that should be handled, yet the experts make it seem simple. That amount of assurance includes patience, time, and expertise. You are not likely to develop into a master immediately, but as soon as you have the basics down, do not get comfortable because there's a hell of a great deal to find out about this substance. They are quite enjoyable to have can save yourself a lot of hassle cooking all that meat inside. They're handy, easy to store and lots of those times have built-in digital detectors that provide you quite good temperature readings. If you're starting an incredible electric smoker is going to do the trick, but you are not likely to have the ability to receive those very fantastic smoke bands you might purchase from a counter smoker or even a charcoal smoker.
As soon as you get into the counter or charcoal smokers, then the area of smoking meats will open up for you. There are many unique methods you can utilize and tastes you may achieve with a more excellent grade smoker. Excellent luck trying to have precisely the same sort of bark in an electric smoker which you're able to get in a canceled one.
Do not become comfortable with where you're in our smoking encounter. There's a great deal to learn and much more flavors to taste. Everybody has to begin somewhere, who knows if you get excellent at it one day that you can turn it into a business enterprise.

Overloading the cooking room
This creates the temperature complicated to manage, and also, it impacts how equally everything will cook. You also should be sure that your meat is not cold since this will radically alter the length of time that which will take.
Let us say you wanted to cram two briskets on the grill once you only have to have one. This is likely to produce the smoking period much, more than a whole lot more raw mass will consume a great deal of the warmth.
A fantastic guideline is you ought to consume at least two to three inches of space around your slab of beef. This way, the heat, and smoke can cook the meat from many angles. If you had a few pieces touching you'd have some stains on the exterior which aren't likely to be prepared.
Over seasoning
It is tough with all these options of spices on the market to ascertain which ones you would like to have in your beverage. The mixes are lovely to use and purchasing them will provide you an awareness of what tastes that you need to enhance your rub.
But in case you are like me, you probably need to get this stuff figured out through experience and testing. The best tip I can provide you when you're just starting out wanting to create your rubs would be to keep it smooth. Use pepper and salt, seriously. After it is possible to work out, how much is too much and the way the two spices socialize with one another about the meats? Then you are going to start to comprehend the fundamental idea of putting together a beverage.
When you've got the two standard flavors down you ought to begin to put in a few of different spices such as paprika or cayenne, however, do not go too overboard since spices such as these can make matters overly hot too fast.
Consider this spice rub for a flavor painting, so you would like the individual enjoying it to be in a position to know the complexity and balance of everything.
Impatience
You are likely to hear me speak a lot about impatience within this guide, and it's most certainly the main thing you remove from these types of tips. Smoking is a very long process, and you should not be cutting some corners.
The entire cooking method isn't about if it is on time; it is about if the meat tastes great. For your meat to feel great, you want two chief items; time and temperature. If you do not have the ideal temperature, your beef is not likely to cook all of the ways through, or it is expected to char upward and burn off. If you do not take your time, and you also attempt to hurry the cooking process, things are not likely to workout correctly.
The most crucial thing about smoking meats is that the tenderness it generates. If you do not get that tenderness, then you've done something wrong and want to determine what it was to correct it for next time. The majority of the time that this difficulty stems from impatience.
A terrific slab of beef comes out of a fantastic deal of patience. Patience is a virtue most of us strive for and it
Taking it too badly
You need to keep in mind it to be an expert it is going to have a great deal of time and cash. The majority of us only need to smoke meats since we like it. That is precisely what I do, and that is how you ought to take a look at it as well. The entire process ought to be relaxing and fun. You must be outdoors in character smelling your aromatic mixtures of smoke, wood, meat, and spices. What more can you request?
Occasionally it may get stressful if your smokers acting up or when the heat is not just appropriate, but understand this is assumed to be something you ought to enjoy. You can not take it too seriously, or you'll suck all the fun from it and wind up giving up smoking meats entirely.
You need to remember there's a great deal of work involved with smoking meats, however, in the close of the afternoon, it is going to taste far better than if you cooked it in the oven. There is nothing like a wonderful smoked brisket cooked with an expert smoker.
Incorrect choice of meat
The trimming of beef has all to do with how it ends up in the long run. You do not wish to purchase the least expensive bit of meat you may find, a great deal of the times it's a lot of fat or is not exactly what you're looking for whatsoever. The incorrect cut of beef may make it dry out too fast and taste awful.
You should find the very best form of meat you can manage when smoking, and it is worth spending a little bit extra to receive the top cuts. To obtain the best cuts, you're likely to need to locate yourself as a butcher. That should not prove to be hard because there's one in just about any city or town I've been around.
You need to have acquainted with the butcher, and they have a great deal of expertise which could help you learn about how to cook your meals properly. They ought to be able to counsel you on exactly what the ideal selection of meat would be for your demands.
You need always to purchase fresh meat when smoking, and even if you do not you're able to add a few more times to the waiting period to get de-thawing it as flash or fast thawing isn't recommended. Ensure that your cut does not have an excessive amount of fat! They got their new smoker and wished to test it out immediately and do not feel as though waiting for the coals to warm up obviously so that they pour a few lighter fluid across the fuels and timber. This is a significant mistake. You are likely to receive a fire which likely to burn too hot for a long time.
The gas will even leave a horrible taste in the smoker, which will influence many cookouts to come. Those terrible scents will detract and infuse with all the meat cooking at the smoker. Nobody enjoys the flavor of gas in their brisket.
Besides, the wood will burn off more quickly, and after the fire dies down, it is going to generate a good deal more smoke too. Together with the timber burning at a faster pace, it is going to have to be replaced more frequently and with too much smoke can mess up your smoked meats.
Everything you have to utilize is a chimney starter. Weber carries an adequate chimney starter, and you can take a look at the prices.
You are not maintaining a constant temperature
The entire purpose of smoking is to cook it at a beautiful low setting, so it remains tender and moist throughout. The minimal heat and cooking will even enable the meat to absorb all of the flavors from your spices and spices which you added from the beverage. Your temperature must reach a stage of stability before adding the meat into the mixture.
An essential facet of smoking meats is getting the perfect quantity of water from the water bowl. The water absorbs the warmth and kind of functions as a regulator of fever using its own steam. It will often vanish so check it every single time you want to reverse around the meat, and if it has to be refilled, refill it.
To correctly gauge the temperature efficiently, you need to look at buying a digital probe thermometer to get your smoker itself.
The precise temperature of the smoker ought to be determined based on which kind of meat you're cooking, the same is correct for what temperature the meat needs to be when it is finished. It is a fantastic idea to start with all the lovers open and permit the air to flow inside.
A large meat smoking error people make is trying to adapt to a lot of factors at the same time. Let us say your fever dropped down quite low and you are attempting to bring back it up, which means you put in another bit of timber and open all of the vents. The next thing you know, your smoker is sitting at 450 levels because of what you did.
If you are all on the map with all the vents opening and shutting your fever will change a lot, causing the meat to dry out or take way too much time to cook.
The principal goal here is to get your best not to panic. It might get stressful at times, but the very best thing that you can do in a situation like this would be to remain calm and think of what might be causing the difficulties. Smoking isn't a race, so go at your own pace. Take it to heart; however, these smokers can become harmful if left unattended.
You have to get focused and awake when smoking.
If you wind up drinking too much, you're more inclined to make mistakes, and you also are not likely to understand much from them. Let's be fair though, and there is nothing better if everything is moving so well to have the ability to unwind and have a beer while you're cooking, don't take it too much is.
You need to be cautious because a few bad things could occur. For starters, you might get dried and pass out only by drinking loads of water between the beers and second, you can begin a grease fire by allowing it to get far too warm by not keeping together with this temperature. Both scenarios are a significant meat smoking error.
Too Much smoke
This smokey flavor is to die for! But a lot of it can well destroy a dinner. A good deal of individuals thinks because the flavor is so great that if you make it smoke, it's likely to make the meat taste better. What is going to occur is that the turkey will begin to dry out faster, and the tastes from the spices and meat will not come through whatsoever. Try a composite of distinct variants in how much you start the vents but keep in mind, do not mess up with too much simultaneously. If that is not working, you may need to take out a few of the timber which you put from the smoker.
Inadequate time
As soon as your cooking for a bunch of individuals that the air once it gets closer to supper time will begin leaning towards people needing to be fed daily. Do not let this alter your goal. However, the slow and low technique has to be used the entire time, or it might have been a waste.
When crunched with deadlines, individuals occasionally will attempt to elevate the temperature to get it to cook quicker, but that's doing is drying out the meat and including a burnt taste. You are aware that you can not hurry the procedure, so why try?
Always account for the additional time required in the event you encounter problems (which you probably will) while smoking. Each part of meat differs, so do your research and take your own time, and it is not a rush. Use your very best judgment and create the proper calls. It will decrease time, but it just will not taste the same as though it were smoked the entire time.
Rushing the End
There is this area while your smoking called"the stall" this is when the meat becomes relatively near where it has to be just kind of hangs in the temperature for some time, occasionally even a few hours based on the size of this chunk of beef. Folks have completed studies to attempt to discover what causes this, but it comes down to the simple fact that the temperature is reduced already and also the meat get somewhat near the temperature it is in.
After all of the fat burns and gristles off that temperature increases and you also won't need to worry about something. You genuinely don't need to go increasing the temperature close to the finish and destroying the entire dinner, would you? I know that it's tempting to wish to have a look inside and determine how your meat is coming across, but trust me it is not worthwhile to only examine it.
Think about it, every single time you open the lid, then you are releasing all that valuable smoke flavor and warmth. Whenever you start it, you are adding more time to the ample cooking time, and you don't want to get trapped using the lid open long.
Launch the lid makes it tough to maintain a steady temperature. There is no point in assessing it often, take it slow and reduced as the smoker does. Opening a lid onto a bullet smoker such as the Weber is going to have a far more significant impact on the temperature falling since it is open, so be cautious.
Drying the meat out
Using a dry brisket in the conclusion of the 8-hour smoking session could be disheartening. Consequently, a lot of people will not continue attempting to smoke meats following an unfortunate encounter like that. By way of instance, don't try to turn the heat to allow it to cook quickly.
Another massive problem which leads to meats to wash out isn't maintaining the water topped off. To put it differently, you need to be sure that you keep your eye on your water and if it begins to dip down, then be sure that you refill it. Most importantly, be sure to have a water tray on your smoker at the first location. Because of not needing one, the beef will dry out fast.
If you place too much wood in the smoker, then you are likely to get far too much smoke. As a result, the meat may also dry out because of this. But should you maintain the suggested quantity of timber in the burner in any way times, you should not have any issues with there being a lot of smoke. In a nutshell, do your very best to restrict the quantity of smoke moving through your smoker because it will wash out your meat. The truth is, the detector is not located close to the flesh; it is on the peak of the smoker. Temperatures can vary between a few inches, so you are likely to need to determine how to repair this matter.
Everything you will need to do is get a temperature probe. Whatever you do is put the probe together with your meat, and you are likely to find a more accurate temperature reading.
Should you buy one that you can not keep within the smoker, then you are likely to need to allow the probe cool before checking. This will make sure you'll receive more precise readings, don't check too often, we do not require that heat to escape out.
Incorrect kind of timber
Utilizing the incorrect sort of wood in the smoker could be catastrophic. You typically need to smoke hardwoods since they don't grab as simple and smoke more than softwoods.
A number of the primary kinds of timber used in smokers are pecan, walnut, apple, hickory, and walnut, each with their taste portfolio. Oak, hickory, and tree tend to give a milder smoke flavor, in which apple and pecan are a milder subtler smoke flavor. I love to use either pecan or apple once I am cooking chicken, fish, or poultry so that it does not overpower all of the spices and taste of the meat.
The option of exactly what wood you need to use is a significant one, and thus don't take it lightly as soon as your chicken comes out tasting just like a tree you do not need to seem like a fool.
Not dividing the meat
Following a very long day of smoking, the very first thing that you would like to do if it is done is split into that poor boy. However, not too fast, you have to let it break before digging in. If you do not wait for 5 to 10 minutes once you take it off the smoker, then the meat is likely to rip and rip. That is not what we're searching for.
If you give it time to break, all the meat begins to find just a bit stronger. When you reduce it once it's had time to pause, you are likely to wind up getting a far more significant part of beef. The look is crucial here.
If your carving pieces from poultry, poultry, steak or pork for people you are likely to need to reduce it a 1/4 inch thick pieces, about the diameter of a pencil. What's more, you are going to want to utilize a suitable carving knife.
Overview
Now you ought to have a fantastic comprehension of what things to avoid when smoking meats. Because of this, it's also advisable to have a better understanding as for what to do if problems arise. Each part of beef will cook differently, so you've got to know about what is occurring. There are a few concepts that execute another kind of cooking. Don't attempt to rush or race. Because of this, you are likely to wind up getting a badly smoked meal.

But It would be silly of my generation to not be intrigued by it. As he takes on a very 90′s internet based look, I remember the type of gifs, games and so on, which is now fashionably used aesthetically ;and is becoming more and more popular. I really love his website, even though it is quite distracting and a bit confusing to look at, but I quite like the gifs and uncertainty to what you are clicking on. I was not that interested in her work, but after I decided to have a look on her website and saw in her statement that she had written:
By working with minimal means – the objects made from one material i.e plaster or resin, supported or carried by another different material i.e fabric or rubber – many different meanings can exist within the work; a psychoanalytical reading alongside a comment on commercialisation. But fundamentally, it’s about myself, being a maker, striving for perfection that is never satisfied
Which I agreed strongly with and I liked the fact that this was said, even though she did not say it in the lecture, It has made me more interested in the way she thinks about her work and herself as an artist. I think there is no such thing as perfect, one because it is subjective, two the only things that can be classed as perfect are organic things because of their symmetrical structure. So anything other than this is only classed as perfect say if it mathematically perfect like a building or functioning car. Yet this is also subjective due to taste, and what a person finds attractive. With my work is about my own perfection in the composition that I make, and I know this is not the same for anyone else and Im sure that sometimes when watching the video of myself building and placing they may get frustrated. But I know not to think about that because I will subconsciously start creating to what I think they will like. And it is not about that. It’s my understanding of my own satisfaction that is pushed to the limits though labour to see if I can reach it.

30 Architecture Thesis Projects to Pick From In 2021
Architecture Thesis: A culmination of all those years of intense training, sleepless nights, countless submissions and unforgettable memories. The grand finale!
It is a real test to showcase all the skills you’ve acquired over the years in a single project. Naturally, choosing from an ocean of architecture thesis topics is one of the biggest challenges you can face as a final year student, as the topic itself may define the trajectory of your thesis!
To ease your conflicted mind, we have curated a comprehensive list of popular architecture thesis projects you might want to explore in your final year for your ready reference.
Go on, have a look! What sparks your interest?
[Read: 7 Tips on Choosing the Perfect Architecture Thesis Topic For You]
Housing/ Residential Projects
1. Affordable Housing
“Housing for all” is a major goal developing countries are striving to achieve. Not everyone has the resources to own a house or even rent one out. Conscious and well-planned housing design can turn cities into places where owning a house is not merely a dream. Let’s work to get there!
2. Gated Communities
With the city centres choking with pollution, traffic congestion and over-population, many people are moving to the suburbs in closed, secure and private gated communities. These colonies circumference almost every major city now, with more emerging as you read. A gated community design could be an interesting (though slightly controversial) thesis topic to explore residential neighbourhood planning!
3. Modular/ Disaster/ Emergency Shelters
Land and resources are limited but the demand for them only keeps increasing giving rise to environmental hazards like deforestation, pollution and depletion of natural assets. In a rapidly changing, calamity prone world, the design of modular, mobile, disaster relief shelters is the need of the hour!
4. Slum Redevelopment
Urban informality may be a fascinating, complex issue to tackle for your thesis. Many people may think many things about the dense, informal urban developments popularly known as ‘slums’, but few are willing to tackle the difficult topic in much detail!
Are you one of the few?
Institutional Projects
5. Educational and Skill-Training Institutions
Schools play an important role in shaping up a person and are key in bringing up generations of bright individuals. Educational and skill-training institutions have vast options, ranging from kindergartens to higher-education institutes; schools of dance to special-needs institutes! Ready to shape minds?
6. Rehabilitation and Wellness Institutions
A sound mind and sound body are key to a happy life!
Sometimes individuals have to be institutionalized to get their health back on track. Rehabilitation centres and centres for persons with depression or trauma aim at people’s mental wellness, while public gyms and civic sports centres aim at people’s physical wellness. If healing architecture and landscape is something you like, this could be the architecture thesis topicfor you!
7. Research Institutions
Progress in science, technology, humanities, etcetera improves our way of living and ensures well-being. The Sheldon Coopers among us wouldn’t be happy to see any fewerResearch centres and laboratories than there are!
Public Infrastructure Projects
8. Hospitals
Hospitals are undoubtedly one of the most important services any region needs. The pandemic has made us understand how under-equipped even the best of hospitals can be and so there is an even bigger reason for every hospital, be it multi-speciality/ speciality hospitals, maternity, special needs, public or private, to be as well designed as possible. This, more than ever, is the need of the hour.
9. Transit Hubs
Airports, Bus Terminals, Railway Stations, Inland Waterways, Seaports.
Do you love to travel? Have you ever waited for a train and imagined how much better that railway station could be? Then what are you waiting for, get working!
10. Sports Stadia
Remember that first stadium experience of watching a cricket or football match? The energy of the crowd, the adrenaline rush! Most group sports stadia (Cricket, Football, Hockey, Baseball, etc) and sports cities require meticulous study before designing, making a very suitable architecture thesis project for students.
11. Urban/ Street Redevelopment
How often do we walk the streets of our cities and almost die because a bike passed within inches of us? Street redevelopment projectscatering to pedestrianization are proven to improve the lives of millions and are rapidly gaining urgency in the urban design domain.
12. Waterfront Development
Rivers are considered sacred and life-giving across the world. The pitiful conditions of water bodies today have led urban designers to take up River/Canal-front Development Projects which aim at minimizing water pollution, a smooth transition from land to water, ultimately encouraging visitors for leisure and fun activities.
13. Public Parks and Plazas
