Itâs about time that I talk more about the second fanfic story that Iâm working on!
WARNING: KHUX ENDING SPOILERS AHEAD
This story takes place immediately after KHUX, or at least, it takes place after Ephemer wakes up in the the flooded remains of Daybreak Town. And we all know he built Scala, right? So this story follows his journey to build Scala, among other things.
This story will also include the first Princess of Heart and all the new lore that comes with it (in fact, thatâs what inspired this story in the first place), prototype Keyblade armor, learning about the importance of world order, world resets, sad key kids, lots of angst, attempts at architecture, and much more, not exactly in that order!
Of course, a fic like this requires some OCs, especially OC key kids. So I created a few to start off with and their designs are up above! Lemme tell you about them because I love them so much now and theyâre all actually pretty cool and theyâre a big part of this story anyways so yeah
Iâll go from left to right!
First up is Jamie! One of my friends wanted an OC in here based off of a few ideas he had, but of course, this character is so much more than that. Jamie is from Radiant Garden as a middle-class citizen of the fabled City of Light. He doesnât have a lot of connections to people; heâs mostly busy working at his job and just trying to make ends meet. But when a chance at a better life comes in the form of a Keyblade and Ephemer, he takes the chance and leaves his world.
Jamie is usually an easy-going and confident guy, and heâs also one of the older people in this initial group of key kids. However, he also is quite short-tempered and can get angered at others easily. When in battle, heâs more of the strong, physical attacker type. So heâs a bit slower than some of the others, but of course, heâs a quite a bit stronger too. He doesnât have much magic skill, but heâs capable of using weaker spells in a pinch. Heâs definitely one of the least experienced in the group when it comes to using a Keyblade.
Next up on the list is Rand. Heâs a somewhat flirty guy, whoâs also kinda cocky. Sometimes, intentionally or not, he gets on otherâs nerves and can be a bit of a pain to be around sometimes. And of course, heâs always teasing someone about something or another. However, deep down, heâs really not that bad of a guy, he just likes to rile people up sometimes and likes attention. He never goes out of his way to actually hurt anyone, at least on purpose. He actually really cares about his teammates and friends. Iâm still working on his backstory though, especially since Iâm not sure if I wanna make him an original Dandelion or if he would be a new wielder like Jamie.
Besides that though, in battle, Rand likes to use strong attacks of all varieties. Whether itâs physical or magic attacks, he likes to hit as hard as absolutely possible. Unfortunately, that does mean that his attacks take much longer to charge compared to his teammatesâ attacks, but at least they can hit extremely hard. He is pretty balanced when it comes to attack and magic stats. And his specialty more specifically lies with non-elemental or more physical magic kind of attacks, such as earth and attacks similar to Ragnarok or Ripple Drive.
After Rand is the elegant Glacies. Sheâs well-respected among her peers, and is not only a capable warrior but is also rather good in social environments. Sheâs basically second-in-commandâbehind Ephemerâdue to her capabilities. Sheâs also an extremely hard worker, always trying to be better and stronger on the face of her peers, but also for the sake of the worlds that she knows that they all have a duty to protect. Due to this, she sometimes snaps at her fellow teammates if she thinks that they arenât taking their duties as Keyblade Wielders seriously, which can lead to some tension. However, she always apologizes later, and as the story goes on, learns to respect her teammates a little bit more. When not in battle, sheâs honestly a pretty chill person and tries her best to help everyone else be at their best too. Glacies is a Dandelion.
Glacies specializes in elemental attacks, though of course her favorite element to use is ice. Sheâs also more skilled in magic attacks than she is at physical attacks, but sheâs trained enough that her physical attacks can hurt if she needs them too. Her magic attacks do tend to be on the stronger side, but they arenât as strong as Randâs magic attacks. However, sheâs very skilled at finding an enemies weak point and exploiting it with her elemental attacks, and she also casts relatively faster than Rand can.
Selene is up next! Sheâs a Dandelion who was in the same Union as Ephemer before the Keyblade War happened. Sheâs also who I have planned to be the first official Princess of Heart. Selene is a quiet but kind girl who finds pressure difficult to handle. At first, she seems a bit aloof and shy, but honestly she feels a lot of social anxiety. Even so, sheâs very good at working together with her teammates, and sheâs also pretty knowledgeable about the more practical uses of magic, like for teleportation and levitation and even for stuff like cooking or structures.
Seleneâs combat capabilities are more attuned to the magic side, more specifically to light and status attacks. So attacks like faith, slow, haste (yes, I do mean FF haste), magnet, KH1 Aero, or cure. Sheâs also pretty good at physical attacks, since her status moves donât do a lot of damage, but sheâs not particularly strong in the realm of physical attacks either, so she usually has to stay back and act as more of a support role to her peers.
Last but not least is Nadia, another key kid who survived the Keyblade War. Sadly, Nadia came out as on of the most mentally scarred of the group, and sheâs very cold to the others at first, even though she agreed to come along with Ephemer. Nadia does not take shit and is not here for friends. She almost believes that Ephemer shouldnât even revive the art of the Keyblade because she doesnât want to have to experience yet another Keyblade War, and sheâs afraid that the more people know about the Keyblade, the more likely it is that something terrible will happen. Later on though, after some character development, Nadia turns out to be a good friend who isnât afraid to give criticism or snide remarks if she feels itâs necessary. Sheâs jaded and scarred, but sheâll eventually do her best to heal.
Nadia is a swift physical attacker. Her attacks donât hit as hard, but she hits fast, and she moves fast too. Her smaller stature allows her to maneuver through the battlefield with greater ease than most, and if a distraction is needed, sheâs the best person for the job. She also doesnât have as much of a defense as the others, but as mentioned, her speed more than makes up for that. Sheâs also surprisingly strong with really good stamina, and so she can jump higher and climb farther than most of her teammates as well.
Anyway, thatâs all of the OCs! Ephemer himself is an all-rounder, able to play any kind of role that he needs to, but of course heâs not a specialist in any of them. But if one of the others is down for the count or if there are only a few of them on a mission, he can take any role that would benefit the team the most.
Thatâs all Iâll share about my story for now! The working title name is âThe First Heart,â but Iâm still trying to find something a little better lol.
Iâm honestly super excited to write this story!

JKSF Jobs
I got asked awhile ago by the lovely @mewithanie if I could write about everyoneâs jobs in jksf if it sparked my interest. It did spark my interest, but I couldnât figure out how to make it into a one-shot or story, so take a tumblr post bullet-style explanation instead!
Read on to find out all about the jobs Patton, Roman, Logan, and Virgil hold in just keep stumbling forward (baby im waiting for you)
tw: suicide (oc), PTSD and trauma (mentioned only), mentions of drugs, alcohol, and school shootings.
Patton
Runs a non-profit
Non-Profit pairs up with schools
Non-Profit is an art therapy center focused on increasing connection within teenagers and allowing them an appropriate outlet for emotional turmoil
Pattonâs group generally gets placed on âhigh-riskâ campuses or campuses that have incidents happen at them
âHigh-riskâ in this case is defined by higher than normal suicide rates, low attendance rates, high-levels of illegal activity (generally drug and alcohol use), high rate of poor mental health, more than average amounts of cheating, etc
Instances involve things like excessive inappropriate school-wide behavior (ie. all the kids getting drunk and disorderly at a school event) as well as shocking incidents (student death from suicide, overdose, drunk driving, or things such as school shootings)
Some kids come by choice, others are referred through a suspension exchange program
Pretty much, a kid gets suspended but can choose to go to the groupâs meetings instead of facing suspension
Kids get referred for suspensions that deal with violence, drug use, alcohol use, excessive absences, and so forth
The idea behind it is that suspended the kid will only negatively impact the kids record and give no reason to change behavior, while the group can help get to the root of the issue and work towards solving/improving that instead
Other kids go by choice bc theyâre looking for extra support, a healthy outlet, advice, etc
They have weekly after school meetings (per each district, with one focal school in each one. The program is currently seven districts wide)
They also have lunch drop-ins were you can come make art, chill, get a snack, pet a therapy dog, and other stuff
One of Pattonâs first schools was the same school Virgil works at
Patton generally leads the entire non-profit and has delegates to deal with the different districts
He handles the school/district that Virgil is at, though he attempts to go to as many things at the other districts as he can
Does a lot of outside work promoting the program to school and school boards, but is starting to delegate a lot of that work to others so he can focus on the kids instead of the bureaucratic shit
Has had to cut back on individual involvement and delegate more as the work and stress from running an entire non-profit has taken a large toll on his health related to chronic illness
He is Not Happy about this fact, but itâs for his health and he needs it. His spouses help support in any ways that they can.
Roman
Theater Boi
He is a director for a local theater company that is actually not half-bad
Enjoys the heck out of it
Went into college planning to become an actor
And boy does he love acting and the truth is? He was good enough. He could have become an actor.Â
But somehow he finds it even more magical running everything behind the acting (and so so much more work, god he never realized how much Work This Was)
So he joins a theater company and he slowly works his way up
At first he comes in as assistant choreographerÂ
Heâs young and they donât think much of it, but the show genuinely improves by his individual suggestions and work and wait, who the fuck is this kid and how do we hang onto him?
He makes his way up quite quickly, sliding his way into assistant directly and then co-director and then suddenly the directorâs leaving and now heâs the director
It happens fast and itâs very very exciting but heâs also honestly a little overwhelming and heâs never been good at managing large tasks without procrastinating bc executive dysfunction (see this post and this one about Roman and ADHD)
And now he is The Director and an entire production is depending on him. Everything. All of it. And it was what he was looking for but itâs a lot.
The first time heâs on his own, it goes okay
Itâs by far not the best the company has done, but itâs also not the worst and the company is pretty supportive of his jump to director and the people who have been there longer help him learn to delegate tasks
And so he tries again, and he does better, and he just continues to get better from there
Thereâs just one hiccup: the scenographer
Basically the scenographer Does Not Like Roman and it creates Conflict
(In my head I sorta imagine the boss character Joan played when they were playing Thomas as Roman as Joan as the boss character in that one part of âCan LYING Be Good?â)
Luckily, Deceit later takes that position, and him and Roman work way better together and pull off some pretty bomb ass productions
Roman has been asked to join other companies before- specifically travelling companies and work on Specific Productions- which is very cool and very exciting but he decides heâd rather do what heâs doing now bcÂ
a) he enjoys the rhythm of his work. b) larger productions are more stress. c) he doesnât want to be gone from his spouses. And d) he gets a lot of positivity and meaning out of what he does now and doesnât see a reason to change that
Every summer he also runs the local chapter of Shakespeare in the park.Â
He does act in these as well bc itâs completely volunteer based. Deceit also acts in these with him and these two theater dorks have way to much fun together
They may or may not of kidnapped Trixie for one of the productions (with Virgilâs consent of course)
Logan
Logan works for a company that considers themselves as a âresearch and problem-solving team for the improvement of marine environmentsâ
Basically, Logan researches issues that negatively impact marine life and helps come up solutions to improve or solve these issues
Most of what he does is cycle through data that other researchers collect and figure out what that data means and how it connects
He looks at a lot of abstract numbers and pulls them together to state exactly what the numbers are reportingÂ
From there he brings that research to a board that forms a hypothesis and then comes up with potential solutions
These solutions are often considered very progressive and liberal and as such cause a lot of debate
Solutions range from legal changes (laws reducing companies waste, laws to prevent oil spills, protection laws around certain species/habitats, etc) to inventions (boats that clean the ocean, replication of habits to help support species that canât live outside of a certain ecosystem, etc)
The company Logan works for has had numerous very successful projects and many of these projects were successful bc of Loganâs involvement
Loganâs spouses are very very proud of this fact
Logan is modest af and brushed it off
Loganâs had quite a few articles published in scientific journals and his findings/theories/work have also made it to national news in the past
Logan himself has actually been asked to present some of his stuff on the news multiple times. He refuses each time and someone else goes in his place.
Does this mean that person gets a lot of credit that should be assigned to Logan? Yes. Does that person feel bad? They do and try to give credit to Logan. Does Logan care? No, no he does not.Â
Logan could care less about credit, he just cares about marine ecosystems and Thatâs Literally It
Seriously, people ask him things like âdoes he understand the âpolitical implicationsâ of his jobâ or âAre you okay with your team constantly stealing your workâ and heâs just like âFish are cool. Leave me the fuck alone.â
Logan has also done more hands-on experience which has included cool adventures that included scuba diving trips to study coral reef damage, spending days in heavy wetlands, and swimming with sharks
His spouses think that this is the coolest thing and Logan agrees a 1000%
He usually works on research because thatâs Where Heâs Comfortable, but the occasional planned (it has to be planned) research trip is always exciting
Logan also has so much passion for his job. So much passion. Itâs sort of an agreed upon deal in the house that when Logan comes home he will generally Need To Infodump because his job is The Coolest
Because of this, a time period between him getting off work and them eating dinner is designated Logan Infodumping Time
Generally this happens while they cook (because as mentioned a few times, Logan is the best cook)
Even if his spouse arenât helping w/ dinner, they usually try to stick around and listen because a) Logan is Cute when talking about things he enjoys. b) he talks about interesting stuff. c) even if they donât find it interesting, Loganâs enthusiasm is infectious and they just Have To Listen
Virgil
Virgil is a high school English teacher
He generally teaches sophomore regular English and junior AP English
Classes can shift slightly depending on the year
Virgil was at first a very distant teacher and didnât connect with his students
Like his students thought he was a fine teacher bc he wasnât too strict and didnât assign a bunch of hw, but no one really liked him either
About his fourth year teaching, a kid at Virgilâs school got suicide baited and ended up taking their own life
It was a Big Deal (and is also how Patton found his way to Virgilâs campus)
After the event, there were lots of discussions and groups at the school, and each teacher talked to their classes
Virgilâs discussion was,, impactful to say the least
He talked to the students frankly about the issue and opened discussion to the topic while making sure to keep it respectful and calling students out on shit while at the same time helping support everyone who was struggling
He ended it with a small speech about self-worth, what it meant, and the struggle to achieve it, especially when everyone around you is pulling you down
It spreads like wildfire throughout the school and suddenly Virgil is a very well-liked teacher because He Gets It, yâknow
(to clarify- his studentâs do not know about his suicide attempts or personally history regarding his PTSD and experiences, that said, they all know thereâs something different about this teacher. Something that makes him understand in a way others donât)
He also has just this snark that students fall in love with
(One of his classâ learning targets for an entire week was just âWeâre going to stick it to The Man. How you ask? Well weâll find out!â
There was also a situation one year when one of Loganâs articles turned up in a multiple choice quiz and No One, including Virgil knew the answers (Virgil did have the answer key but it Did Not Make Sense)
He had to actually call Logan to figure it out
Turns out, most of them was the quiz makerâs mistake because he was asking questions about âauthorâs toneâ and âauthorâs purposeâ and Loganâs just like,, I didnât meant to have any tone? I donât understand tone? My purpose was I like fish? Why are they saying itâs to educate the average person??
(pretty much they analyze Loganâs article from a neurotypical standpoint, which Logan Is Not, so it doesnât work. Virgil scraps the quiz.)

Oh my goodness, I didnt see the link to your fanfic account! I am dumb. So ignore my previous ask and instead answer this one for the meme. 13, 3, 14, 1 and 2 for Happiness goes on? (I shall leave reviews on your beautiful fanfic soon I promise, they are good.)
(Hiii, soooâŚthis whole reply is late because I actually typed up ALL OF THIS last night, and then accidentally âxâ-ed out of my browser and lost it all, because I am very very stupid. And then was too tired to retype it up before going to sleep. I hope I remember roughly everything, and apologies for that mistake.)
Oh! Haha! Alright then! Thank you! Donât feel dumb at all for not realizing which AO3 account is mine or for your previous ask(which for others who are curious, said: â1 - 5 for all your fics! Just talk about your favs!â). I was prepared to choose 3 fics (including âHappiness Goes Onâ since thatâs definitely the one Iâm most proud of, so I guess thatâs closest to a âfavoriteâ right?), and go through the first 5 questions for each, though I wonât lie and say it wouldnât have taken some time to answer.
BUUUTâŚsince you said to scrap that first ask, Iâll answer these individual ones for âHappiness Goes On.â And your compliment and promise for a future review means SO goddamn much, thank you sincerely.
(WARNING / REMINDER: This is about my fic that deals with the subject of child molestation, and I do reference that a little bit in this reply. Donât read further if it makes you uncomfortable, which I entirely understand and respect.)
**********
13: What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didnât listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?
HA! Well, American Pie obviously, for a majority of it. While brainstorming / writing / editing the epilogue? A lotta Billy Joel. ;)
The idea to use American Pie bounced into my brain when it came on the radio at the thrift shop where I volunteer, one of the rare times my own music speaker battery died. Usually a disaster, because our store radio is pretty crappy, but the sound quality wasnât too bad that day, and I rediscovered how much I love that song and âWhy isnât this on my ipod again?â. Listening to the lyrics, I realized how much some of them fit the Guardians in general, and this story specifically, which I have Gamora mentally note in the fic. I was sitting and casually chatting with the manager while also thinking, âGoogle what year this came out when you get home, but Iâm sure itâs the 70â˛s. Peter would know it, and it could be the Zune. I think it could work.â Iâm proud that I was able to reference the song so many times without actually naming it by title, but I assume most readers knew what it was, itâs just that famous. (I also couldnât resist the light-hearted joke, later when things calmed down, of Gamora saying âThisâŚis the longest songâŚI have ever heard.â and Peter smiling without even looking at her and giving a cheeky âI know.â)
In terms of using Billy Joel for the epilogue, Iâm just a Billy Joel fanatic. The use of him for this story began just from the We Didnât Start the Fire joke toward Rocket at the bar (I thought it was clever, Peter!), and later on I saw how The Longest Time fit romantically for Starmora, and some of the lyrics matched the healing themes of the overall story, and I thought âMaybe theyâve been playing BIlly Joel since that night; maybe that can be the joke.â Why shouldnât his Greatest Hits albums (at least) be on the Zune? I struggled a lot over what song should be the final one Gamora comments on before they switch artists to appease the group. I never specify which romantic Billy Joel song Peter and Gamora slow danced to during their âdate nightâ in that six-week summary, but I like to imagine it was Just the Way You Are. I considered Keeping the Faith or Vienna for the final one, but I thought they deserved something more fun and naughty to analyze this time, so Only the Good Die Young it is. :D
In conclusion, I listened to The Longest Time, and the entire An Innocent Man studio album, a lot (as if I needed an excuse).3: Whatâs your favorite line of narration?
The portion in italics is my favorite line, but Iâm including the entire sentence for context purposes:Â âShe would need to grow used to him viewing Yondu as a caring parent who was extraordinarily protective of his boy, and would have hunted down this pervert to whistle a glowing arrow through her skull.â14: Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic?
Ohh geez, wow, that one is tough. I donât know if itâs accurate to say this story was intended to educate, but just to explore the idea with fictional characters. I have no expertise on the subject, and would never claim such, or talk down to those who do. I didnât intend to create a PSA. I suppose all of the âlessonsâ for Peter (if they can be called that) I hope all readers already know and agree on (basically a collection of âit wasnât your faultâ and âthis doesnât define youâ and âtrauma isnât a competition, someone else suffering worse doesnât invalidate your experienceâ and âyou should feel comfortable talking about anything without judgement or shameâ etc.).
Slightly lesser scale messages, thereâs also reminders about the importance of communication, trusting each other, letting the other person speak in an argument, not letting oneâs jealousy/instincts/bad mood interfere with fairness, not running away from a fight or staying angry, respecting boundaries and privacy, all that healthy relationship jazz that these two are still figuring out. 1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?
This post is already very long, and I could probably talk for hours about the decision-making process for many scenes (of my GotG fics, this took the longest to write and publish, over 2 months), so Iâll try to condense this to a few bullet points that probably donât fit the âinspiredâ criteria.
- It was originally going to be in two parts, 4 scenes each, when I thought the epilogue would be much shorter. But as the lilâ wrap-up got longer (because we needed a fluffy conclusion, dammit!), I decided to make it a separate âchapter.â
- I think the concept probably started as one of those strange, angsty âwhat if?â scenarios I make up in my head at night that I still canât believe I created into a full-fledged work. I liked the idea of Peter and Gamora having this conversation and her comforting him, but I knew if I was really going to throw it out there for other fans, it had be more balanced with happier moments, too. I just know I was always going to make the offender a woman - both because it would lead to the misunderstanding that she was a past consensual hook-up when Peter was an adult to spark some irritation and jealousy in Gamora, and because itâs realistically different from other sexual assault stories, since women can be pedophiles and child predators too, and theyâre just as horrible. :(
- The fanfic idea of âGamora accidentally starts a fire while trying to cook, and Peter falsely accuses and lashes out at Rocketâ was in my head before, but there were two key differences. 1) It was the entire plot, not a light-hearted subplot in the shadows of something bigger, 2) Meredithâs letter was either fully or partially burnt as a result of the fire. By the end Gamora was going to confess it was her fault, that she was trying to surprise Peter by cooking spaghetti, and he would apologize both to her and to Rocket for losing his temper and getting so angry. I hated that idea later and found it too sad (heâs already lost the Walkman and second cassette tape, why would I want him to lose even more from his mother?), and in âSpark My Memoryâ (the Christmas fic I wrote for â12 Days of Starmoraâ) the Guardians put his motherâs letter in the photo album gift for Peter, completely safe and unharmed. I like to keep all my fanfics canon-compliant and non-contradictory from each other, so the letter is fine, no burning it.
Yet âGamora started a fire cookingâ still seemed fun to me, as I like the idea that sheâs so badass and skilled and intelligent, but failed at something so domestic and simple. Kinda cute. I was so excited to insert it into this, because I think it worked on multiple levels. Itâs a driving force for the plot (the reason the team go to the restaurant and they stumble upon that particular waitress), the reason Gamora was already in a bad mood during her fight with Peter, it could be used as a metaphor/comparison for Peterâs anxiety and Gamoraâs guilt, it was something for the Guardians to put at a higher priority to tease and mock Gamora for while oblivious to the main story, something for Peter to just break down into giggles over once they changed the subject (because he earned a good laugh after that heartbreaking and vulnerable childhood trauma story), an excuse to give Rocket so many funny lines, an overall silly and sitcommy-style subplot to fall back on, and a sweet âvictory!â for Gamora to have (sort of?) conquered by the epilogue. ^_^2: What scene did you first put down?
This is easy. Iâve written all but one (8 out of 9) of my fanfics in order, except for âJust Like Everybody Else.â So ya, I wrote the opening scene first, Baby Grootâs magic trick lesson and Peterâs oh-so-cruel âcan only be seen onceâ deception. I needed to ease readers (and myself) into the angst and heavy shit to follow, and that cute idea had also been in the back of my mind for a while. ^_^

I think you dropped the thread for an unknown reason. Today I finished writing a long and thorough report for work that I am proud of. I donât think itâs boring to read but I am biased.
SMART Food for Life: 2nd Year Report for the Stavros Niarchos Foundation
Report period: April 1, 2020 through March 31, 2021
SMART is pleased to offer our 2021 progress report on the 2nd year of funding for the Food for Life Project. The entirety of this report covers the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic and how we have met it. Understandably, the hands-on project delivery model detailed in our initial grant proposal has no longer been viable in a time of social distancing and remote learning, and so we are presenting our new, adaptive response to COVID-19 that has allowed us to fully engage our participants and maintain our SMART community. This report will illustrate our notable successes in meeting and surpassing our stated program objectives in the face of the immense restrictions imposed by COVID.
Project Objectives:
To recap our initial proposal, the specific objectives of the SMART Food for Life Project are:
⢠To enhance the quality of life, reduce isolation, and achieve optimum health status for a growing community of self-identified women living with/affected by HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses
⢠To further develop and expand a hands-on, culturally appropriate nutrition and cooking workshop series specifically designed to address the health and nutrition needs of our SMART community
⢠To nurture and grow a thriving team of SMART Ambassadors
⢠To increase residentsâ access to fresh fruits and vegetables and affordable, healthy food, resulting in more nutritious meals prepared at home
SMARTâs Response to COVID
SMART is located in NYC DOHMHâs East Harlem Neighborhood Health Action Center (Health Action Center), where all of our programs and activities are held. Due to COVID-19, the Health Action Center building has been closed since mid-March of 2020, and SMART staff has been working remotely. Our in-house client programs have been on hold and will continue to be so at least through the summer of 2021. Due to this circumstance, we have been challenged to devise innovative ways of delivering our programming and engaging our participants through online platforms and social media connections, as well as through traditional means such as phone calls and mailings.
Immediately upon the closure of our offices at the Health Action Center, we initiated a weekly practice (or daily, in some cases) of contacting our list of over 65 active participants by phone to assess their most basic needs and provide direct resources and support. Our Director of Operations, Sam Clare, and Program Director, Tara Pierce, divided this effort between them, together with our Mandarin Translator, Lydia Liu, who reached out to the Mandarin-speaking women. While all of us were shaken by the sudden loss of our in-person interactions and physical community, we began to find that the shared sense of emergency and frequent phone check-ins were strengthening our bonds with participants and giving us deeper, more specific insights into their needs, both immediate and long-term. We were also becoming more directly aware of their access to healthy food, or lack thereof, and so were inspired to begin a process of addressing food insecurity in increasingly expansive ways, as described throughout this report.
SMART participants represent the most vulnerable populations affected by COVID, as most are living with one or more chronic conditionsâ HIV, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesityâcoupled with economic disadvantages that place them at higher risk of adverse outcomes if infected. Fortunately, none of our SMART women have experienced life-threatening conditions due to COVID, though some have had the virus, and, tragically, the husband of one of our women lost his life to it. More commonly, participants have faced issues of isolation and lack of reliable access to food. Our in-person programming had been providing healthy breakfasts and lunches on program days, in addition to the weekly pantry bags distributed in SMART Body cooking classes, and the loss of this supplemental food was pronounced. While local agencies were stepping up to offer emergency food, the lines to receive it were often many blocks long and proved prohibitive for those with mobility or other health challenges. And so, to fill this initial food vacuum, we began to personally deliver emergency food to our most vulnerable women. Two of our SMART staff members, Les LaRue and Frances Wood, live in the East Harlem neighborhood where most of our participants reside and were able to take on the task of picking up nutritious groceries and safely delivering them to the womenâs residences, predominantly in NYCHA buildings. We were also able to connect participants to previously unknown food pantries both in and outside of the neighborhood, such as MCCNY Charities in Hellâs Kitchen who delivered groceries to their doors.
In these ways, we achieved a measure of stability within our SMART community in the early days of COVID, and so had more and more breathing room to consider our role as continuing providers of holistic education, however impossible this had first seemed. We began to broaden our perspectives and turn our attention to programming in addition to the emergency response. Our first effort at on-line learning was an initiative called SMART Tutorials which we began in late March of 2020. Â Â Â
SMART Tutorials
Designed to keep participants engaged in a supportive environment of learning, SMART Tutorials are short, instructive videos covering a wide range of nutrition, wellness, healing, art, and technology training topics that represent our holistic approach to health. Christina Rodriguez, our then Social Media Coordinator (now Communications & Social Media Director), quickly emerged as a highly capable video creator who took on the job of working with other SMART staff members to create videos directly related to their program areas. She set up a SMART YouTube Channel and began to build an extensive video library that now includes over 100 videos! (representing both the SMART Tutorial program and the SMART Live! series of real-time virtual classes).
SMARTÂ Live!
Having ventured into the virtual world with our SMART Tutorial offerings, it was a natural next step to use our increasing technical knowledge and reliance on social media to develop real-time, interactive programming to more directly engage our participants and provide the ongoing instruction and connection to supportive community that is SMARTâs mission. One of our SMART staff members, Frances Wood, was also teaching as an adjunct professor at Columbia University at that time and had undergone training for conducting classes through Zoom. She was able to assist other staff members in navigating the Zoom platform, prompting us to initiate weekly Zoom staff meetings. As we had already begun to utilize Facebook more heavily as a means of disseminating information to our women, the combination of Zoom experience and Facebook familiarity provided a foundation upon which we could conceive of a virtual curriculum. The SMART Live! initiative, born of necessity and evolving experience, began in April of 2020 with SMART Live! Culinary Workshopsâa virtual iteration of the SMART Body hands-on cooking classes that are the core of the SMART Food for Life Project.
A major impetus for launching the live Culinary Workshops was to ensure that we could fulfill our commitment to the Culinary Training Programâa workforce development initiative we had undertaken in collaboration with DOHâwhich engaged 12 SMART women as Culinary Trainees in an intensive 2-year training. The pandemic hit near the middle of year two of this training, and we were determined to complete its objectives regardless of COVID restrictions. Our first live-streamed cooking classes, intended as training sessions for the Culinary Trainees, were also learning opportunities for SMART staff in transitioning to a virtual class model and addressing the many challenges that surfaced, including bridging the digital divide (which we will discuss below). SMART Live! now includes three weekly live-streamed virtual class offerings which we are delivering via Facebook and Zoom: SMART Live! Culinary Workshops, SMART Tech Talks, and SMART Live! University.
SMART Live! Culinary Workshops (live-streamed on SMARTâs Facebook page and open to all)
In keeping with our stated goals of nutrition education and increased access to fresh, healthy food, as well as decreased feelings of anxiety and isolation, we are exceedingly proud of our SMART Live! Culinary Workshop series. Every Thursday morning, SMART culinary instructors Juan Pablo Chavez and Sam Clare lead viewers in live, step-by-step healthy cooking and nutrition education demonstrations performed and filmed in their home kitchens and assisted behind the scenes by remote SMART tech staff (all of whom have acquired their videography/performance/tech skills in the âlearn-by-doingâ manner demanded by COVID). Utilizing seasonal ingredients with healthy nutritional benefits, the cooking demos focus on recipes that can help manage or mitigate the symptoms of a wide array of chronic illnesses that disproportionately affect our participants. The workshops are highly interactive, with participants using the comments section to ask questions and add observations, and instructors providing verbal answers and additional information in real time. The recorded SMART Live! classes are then posted on our Facebook page for further viewing, some of the posted videos having amassed more than 600 views to date! After a video editing process, each class is also posted to YouTube and on SMARTâs website for even greater reach.
An important incentive provided to SMART participants who participate in the workshops is a $20 supermarket gift certificate to one of two âShop Healthyâ supermarkets located in East Harlem. SMART has used these supermarkets for over 6 years and was instrumental in facilitating their âShop Healthyâ designation, indicating a healthy improvement to the quality of their products. The grocery store gift certificates, coupled with healthy nutritional information provided in the workshops, help to ensure that our participants are able to keep nutritious food on their tables. The certificates are offered in lieu of the pantry bags we would normally distribute at our in-person SMART Body cooking classes.
SMART Live! Tech Talks (live-streamed on SMARTâs Facebook page and open to all)
Among the many challenges posed by our transition to digital programming has been the deeply unjust technology gap our clients face in terms of both equipment and training. As we have proceeded to iron out many of the snags in the delivery of our virtual programs, the lack of reliable, affordable internet connectivity and dependable internet devicesâas well as the gap in basic confidence and skill to navigate social mediaâhas been a primary hurdle. We have addressed this issue in stages, beginning with one-on-one conversations with participants to assess their relationship with basic technology. Frances Wood, who had been the instructor for the in-person SMART Computer class and so was the natural contact for tech training, took on the new title of SMART Technical Director. During the late summer and early fall of 2020, she was able to conduct a series of in-person trainings with small groups of SMART participants in basic internet connection and social media skills. Trainings were held in front of the Health Action Center in accordance with social distancing and PPE guidelines. Based on the information collected in individual needs assessments, Frances worked with participants to ensure that they had reliable high-speed broadband internet access, or that they were able to connect with social media on their phones. Assistance included: helping participants set up home wi-fi service; loaning participants iPads for their use; and helping them utilize social media apps on their cell phones.
When COVID restrictions began to tighten anew in the fall, we halted all in-person meetings in front of the Health Action Center and turned our focus to virtual engagement. In October of 2020, we began providing technology training online, with Frances leading weekly livestreamed âTech Talks,â following the SMART Live! Culinary Workshop format described above.
Tech Talk classes have become a popular, well-attended series offered every Monday on Facebook Live. Participants receive step-by-step guidance in creating email accounts, shopping safely online, and finding reliable digital sources for health information, among other useful internet topics. Videos of each class are then edited and posted to YouTube so that they may be accessed on demand. Frances is creating an evolving learning environment that aims to combat the isolation, health inequities, and barriers to information and resources that result from limited technology skills. As participants acquire the knowledge and equipment they need, they enjoy increasing access to SMARTâs entire growing library of 100+ virtual learning resourcesâSMART Tutorials, SMART Live! healthy cooking demos, and SMART Live! University presentations. The online trainings also allow us to expand SMARTâs services to anyone with an internet connection, thus broadening our own social reach. As testament to the effectiveness of this approach, we went from having 5 women in attendance at our first SMART Live! cooking demo to now reliably drawing an audience of 30-40 actively engaged participants at each of our virtual classes!Â
SMART Live! University (requires a Zoom link provided to SMART participants only)
SMART University is our signature treatment, prevention, and health education series that addresses the physical, psychological, and social needs of self-identified women living with or affected by HIV and/or other chronic illnesses that disparately affect under-served neighborhoods such as East Harlem. As with all of our other in-house offerings, SMART University classes had been put on hold due to COVID, though we were making great strides with the SMART Live! Culinary and Tech Talk virtual programming. By January of 2021, we felt confident enough in our ability to host virtual classesâas well as to connect with an engaged group of 30+ participantsâto begin collaborating with other community partners in offering SMART Live! University presentations. Â
In its virtual iteration, SMART University offers live, timely presentations every Tuesday on maintaining health and wellness during COVID and beyond. As many of these classes often cover sensitive health and/or confidential social issues, the live Zoom classes have been limited to SMART women participants only, though the subsequent edited videos posted on our website and YouTube channels are available to all. We have been working with community partners such as CONNECT, Safe Horizon, and HHAP to present the weekly Zoom classes on health/mental health topics, social service resources such as SNAP benefits, tax preparation guidance, guarding against financial abuse, GYN care and more, including classes on nutrition topics led by chef Juan Pablo of SMART. On those weeks when SMART University classes cover health topics such as Diabetes or Recognizing Signs of Stroke, we are careful to align our Culinary Workshops with recipes that address the highlighted health concerns.
It should be noted that SMART University was our premiere program founded in 1998 to provide treatment and prevention education about HIV/AIDS for low-income women of color. This model remains solid and is especially relevant now in providing vital COVID-19 information. Among our most well-attended offerings have been a series of classes on COVID and the COVID vaccine presented by a highly regarded infectious disease specialistâDr. Samuel Merrick, Medical Director, CSS/New York Presbyterian Hospital. These classes have had a direct, measurable impact on the lives of our participants, particularly regarding the COVID vaccine. Despite being among a population most vulnerable to the adverse effects of COVID, many of our women expressed an initial distrust of the vaccine and unwillingness to take it. But after having voiced their concerns and acquired new knowledge in the question-and-answer sessions with the doctor, they have been able to make responsible decisions based on accurate information shared by a trusted source. We can now report that almost all of our active SMART women have been vaccinated.
SMART Art
To complement our holistic approach to health, an additional offering during COVID has been the preparation of âart kitsâ for women to work on at home. Our SMART Art instructor, Les LaRue, designs projects that require cutting, sewing, gluing, and careful, meditative time to help our women deal with stress and issues of isolation by engaging in creative activity. Les prepares packets of necessary materials, patterns, and step-by-step instruction sheets which are hand-delivered or mailed to interested women participants, who then share photos of their completed creations on social media. The list of participants has grown to over 30 creative women! The instruction âslidesâ are also turned into SMART Tutorials, with links to the patterns on our SMART website. As with all of our online offerings, we are thereby able to offer the art projects to a wider audience.
Partnerships
For a brief time (July-October 2020) when transmission rates of COVID-19 were low/declining, we were able to meet with participants in person outside of the Health Action Center. We were greatly excited to connect with the Sally Cooper CSA through our long association with ACT UP (where SMARTâs roots are found). Every Wednesday afternoon throughout the late summer months, a Sally Cooper CSA van loaded with fresh farm produce arrived in front of the Health Action Center building where we set up tables and filled pantry bags for the women who had participated in our SMART Live! Culinary Workshop class the previous week. Adhering to social distancing and PPE guidelines, the women gathered to pick up their food bags (with extra masks inside) and $20 supermarket gift certificates, and to reconnect and share a welcome time of in-person community. The produce of the week was then incorporated into the Culinary Workshop recipes presented in class the following day!
This in-person time was a valuable opportunity to instill and reinforce COVID-19 safety precautions for clients by practicing social distancing and mask-wearing, as well as to provide PPE (disposable masks and hand sanitizer). It also allowed us to distribute other materials such as the SMART Art packets, and to engage with the wider East Harlem Community and share information about our programs. We were able to enlist several new SMART participants through this outreach, as well as being able to share whatever was left of the bountiful produce with other community residents after our participants had received their bags. Our SMART Ambassadors (stipend workers) assisted us with the outdoor activities, allowing them to earn small stipend payments. We also used the safe/socially distanced outdoor environment to conduct intake interviews with new SMART clients and hold the one-on-one in-person technology sessions.
Additionally, we were able to secure NYCDOH âHealth Bucksâ for our women to purchase âHealthy Food Boxesâ from Grow NYC, whose distribution tent was located right around the corner.
As evidence of our online reach, our SMART Live! series caught the attention of GMHC, with whom we presented a special SMART Live! Culinary Workshop for GMHC members in November of 2020.
Our most recent partnership is with an initiative called âCommunity Impactâ at Columbia Universityâspecifically a subset of this initiative called âCAFE Prep,â a culinary workforce program very similar to the pilot Culinary Training Program we just completed with DOH. A Development Associate from Community Impact, having happened across SMARTâs website and been greatly impressed by our holistic approach, contacted our Founding Director, Susan Rodriguez, in late January of 2021 to discuss a possible collaboration. This has led to weekly Zoom meetings and all manner of brain-storming as to ways in which our programs might complement each other and move forward toward common goals. As we are uncertain of DOHâs intention regarding construction of a teaching kitchen at the Health Action Center (or pursuing culinary workforce training in general), we are excited to find an enthusiastic partner with experience in this work with whom we can explore possibilities for the future.
Post-COVID Plans
As to the future, we are forging ahead with our full roster of virtual programs and are in close communication with the administration of the Health Action Center building to be at-the-ready whenever a partial re-opening is scheduled to occur, hopefully in September. In anticipation of a new normalcy post COVID, we have developed a hybrid program model wherein limited-capacity classes will be led by an instructor in a âstudioâ setting inside the Health Action Center and simultaneously live streamed through Zoom to a wider, online audience. We are tentatively calling this the SMART Studio Project. While we are presently in a âholding patternâ regarding our SMART Ambassador program, we anticipate having an increased need for Ambassador involvement when we are able to begin hybrid programming.
In closing, it is heartening to note that having our mode of operation completely turned upside down has had unexpectedly positive consequences. Our increased online presence has been noted by long-time participants who may have fallen out of touch over the years, but who now have resurfaced and are renewing old ties and making new ones through virtual connections. We are also attracting brand new engagement with our livestreaming productions and recorded videos. We have been able to assist almost 40 women in connecting to social media and virtual learning platforms, thereby widening their horizons and inching their seats closer to the table. Regarding our growth as SMART staff, we are all monumentally more tech savvy and adaptable to sudden change. We are also realizing the almost limitless possibilities for future SMART Live! University classes, as presenters can be located anywhere across the globe. Moving into virtual programming has been a long-term goal of SMART, and necessity has certainly been the mother of invention for us over these surreal months. We are deeply grateful for the continued support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and look forward to our 3rd year, however strange and unexpected it may prove to be.

one, two, step-
@rhi-draws-things three million years ago drew me my goatsona (goat persona) for my DnD group, and i was supposed to give her something in exchange, so uh sorry iâm late Rhi but hereâs a Thing that i hope you like.
set in/based on Rhiâs excellent tmnt 2012 Fusion AU. an alternate universe where mutants have the ability to fuse with other mutants and also humans. its v good trust me.
Borne out of habit and repetition, thereâs eventually a day that Mikey wanders into the barn specifically just to see Donnie, because heâs got nothing else to do and no one else he wants to talk with. Not that he really wants to talk, what with a weight of aimless uselessness sitting in his chest and a snarl of unhappy emotions waiting to spark into a right storm. He just needs⌠something. Something to do, someone to see who isnât anyone inside the farmhouse.
Of course, Donnie is about as welcoming as he ever is these days. Crookedly slouched, absolute intensity on his work, no room for niceties or kindness. Just steely determination to fix things.
Donnie has been like that since they got here, and even worse since he diagnosed Leoâs coma as one that could be indefinite. Mikey has seen only scarce glimpses of his older brother, since Donnie canât figure out how to sit still longer than passing out on the couch for a few hours. Itâs a little weird, seeing Donnie behave so much like Mikey sometimes does. Honestly, itâs disconcerting, and it gives away just how really upset Donnie probably is about Leo, and their father, and everything.
It makes him a right asshole to talk with, too.
Mikey says hello anyway, and rolls his eyes at the curt greeting he gets in return, as well as the âgo away, Mikey, Iâm busy,â that follows right after.
âYou sure youâre busy? Not just obsessively working on shit âcause youâre neurotic as hell?â Mikey needles, leaning on the desk beside Donnie and hoping to maybe start a good bicker. His brother doesnât even look up.
âMmm,â is all Donnie grunts. Oh, so heâs regressed to monosyllables? Nice.
Mikey pokes Donnieâs shoulder. His brother shrugs it sharply and keeps working. Mikey just about rolls his eyes out of his skull.
âSkill testing question: when was the last time you stood up, and if that number is not below five hours ago, how much feeling have you lost in your lower half at this point?â
âMgh.â
âThat answer just fills me with new knowledge, really. I feel all warm and tingly and shit. I might write a thesis paper on it.â
âGo away, Mikey.â
Mikey sighs loudly, pushing away from the table dramatically. âLook, Iâm bored as fuck, so not Iâm leavinâ until you stand up and at least attempt to take care of yourself.â
âIâm fine,â Donnie says, even though his voice is rough and his eyes bloodshot. Mikey frowns, watching his brotherâs steady fingers keep working at the helmet-thing for April. Though his hands move fluidly, Mikey sees a serious slump of exhaustion to Donnieâs shoulders.
And not even a herd of wild horses could drag Donnie off to bed, not while Leoâs still asleep and Donnie has work he apparently has to do, even though he needed a break like, forever ago. Mikey knows his brother well enough to know no matter what he says⌠nothing is going to make Donnie go and actually take care of himself right now.
Desire for a good mock fight evaporates in Mikey, and heâs left feeling worn out again.
Mikey sighs to himself, watching his brother try to single-mindedly solve everyoneâs problems in one go. A part of him is kind of jealous of Donnieâs sheer determination and near compulsion- at least he has goals, and drive to do meet those goals. Mikey has energy to burn, but nowhere to aim it on this stupid farmland. Playing with chickens and cooking meals only keeps him entertained for so long, but right now thatâs all he knows how to do. Everything else is outside his capabilities.
Mikey misses home, misses their friends, misses their missing father and things being easy, at least sometimes. Theyâre all cooped up in the farmhouse together right now- him, Donnie, Raph and Casey and April- and yet it feels like thereâs distance between them all, so long as the gap Leo left remains open.
Mikeyâs lonely, honestly, and he knows his brother probably is too. Unwillingness to actually talk that out doesnât erase it from being a thing.
Donnie has no energy to keep this endless workhorse drudgery up anymore. Mikey has too much energy to handle and not a single task left to spend it on. Neither of them is willing yet to actually talk about all the horrible stuff sitting inside them, but theyâre both in serious need of closeness with someone, because this isolation feels like it could kill.
And then Mikey nearly smacks himself upside the head. Thereâs an easy solution to all of this.
âHey, Donnie?â
âMm? What.â
âTurn around.â
âWhat? No Iâm working-â
Mikey grabs the back of Donnieâs chair and spins him around. Donnie barely lets go of his tools in time, unwillingly rounding with a scowl in place and his mouth already open to scold.
âFuse with me,â Mikey says seriously, and Donnieâs mouth clicks shut.
ââŚwhy?â Donnie asks, giving Mikey a suspicious look. Mikey grins, grabbing his hand.
âDo it and youâll understand,â He says cryptically, just to annoy Donnie, and hauls his brother out of the seat heâs probably been in for the last ten hours. Donnie stumbles, blinking rapidly and muttering about hypoglycemic attacks and the chances of him passing out mid fusion dance. Mikey ignores Donnieâs grumblings, and artfully corrals his brother into the dance.
Donnie drags his feet at first, annoyed and clearly at the end of his science-âtil-I-drop binge, but Mikey feels a tingle start in tips of his fingers as they fall into sync. It spreads up his hands and arms, from his toes up his legs- fluttering and warm and making him feel lighter than air. There are hints of sadder things, of heavy hearted emotions and pain, and those feelings from Donnie are evenly matched by Mikeyâs. Neither of them is okay, neither of them is willing to talk about it. Not yet.
Fusion removes the need to talk.
Mikey laughs in surprise as Donnie abruptly spins him, his brother abruptly throwing himself 100% into the effort to fuse, and thereâs Donnieâs familiar laugh; something Mikey hasnât heard in weeks since they arrived at the farmhouse. Itâs creaky in places but its real, and it makes a bubbly feeling burst in Mikeyâs chest.
They spin together, drawing close as their feet slide and tap in perfect sync- theyâre at opposite ends of the scale nine times out of ten, and then thereâs times like this, where itâs all ease of movement and simple knowledge that the other knows the exact step theyâre going to take next- where everything just makes clear perfect sense, and thereâs no falter in their communication at all.
Theyâre the B-team for a reason, and itâs not just because their older brothers are sometimes jerks and get too easily exasperated with their eccentricities. Itâs because they sometimes just click.
Donnie actually smiles, and itâs like months of stress lift from his eyes just with that expression, and Mikey mirrors the toothy grin with all the sincerity heâs got in him. It overpowers all the twisty awful emotions heâd had before this, and Mikey finally feels nothing but okay.
Donnie obviously feels the same, laughing freely as they dance, and against the echo-y rafters of the barn and mixed with the smell of old wood and hay and substances Mikey couldnât even name- itâs amazing sounding, and it draws more exhilarated laughter out of Mikey.
Step, step, and twirl- they crash together in a burst of feelings and understanding and unconditional familial affection and love-
-and Monnie opens his eyes, all three of them feeling significantly less achy and awful than Donnieâs had, and from a much higher perspective above the ground. He yawns, feeling the urge to go and sleep off the fading exhaustion one part of him has, but the burbling energy the other half provides gives boost to the absolute determination he possesses, and then he doesnât need to anymore.
Stretching his four arms above his head and behind his back, Monnie sighs happily as strength and vigor erases aches and cramps from bending over a desk and bedside. Good fucking god, why didnât he do this hours ago, if not days? Weeks, he could have done this weeks ago, rather than sit around feeling miserable and tired and aimless and too wired to sleep at all. Why didnât he? Everything is so much easier to handle now that heâs fused.
Both sides of him respond that itâs because heâs two parts of dysfunctional individuals with communication problems. Monnie tells himselves to fuck off.
He glances at the now very short table all of Donnieâs projects are scattered across, and finds a dozen new solutions popping into his head now that heâs got a fresh streak of creativity to add to the geniusâs, and all the knowledge needed to articulate, refine, and execute the ideas. The daunting tasks of medical, mechanical, and economical problem solving are much less stressful, now that heâs got a thrum of excitement in his chest and broader perspective.
Of course⌠a repressed part of one half is calling to the restless part of the other half, demanding to be outside in the sun and getting his blood pumping. Part of him has been cooped up in this barn for weeks, and it makes the other halve jittery just to experience secondhanded. Monnie feels it thirdhanded and he understands both sides of the equation.
âI need to finish this, though,â Monnie mutters to himself, picking up his tools and the helmet and examining them, as well as absently starting to rearrange the desk into a manner that suits all him instead of just one half of him. He really does have so many things to get done- so many things, jeez- but the sun is warm and the wind is sweet and part of him recalls a very lovely climbing tree not far from the farm.
Admittedly, Monnie is as determinedly focused as he is impulse and whim driven. He needs to get work done, but he also needs to get out and stretch and re-fucking-lax, Donnie, youâre tying yourself up in knots like this-
-I know what Iâm doing-
-wrecking your posture is what youâre doing-
-like youâre one to-
-talk, slouching so-
-much of the time over-
-videogames-
-desks-
Monnie shakes his head, quieting the brief squabble with himselves. His fusion remains solid despite the bickering, which is nice since itâs been ages since he was himself, and while he has occasional scattering days where a lot of messy and painful feelings make his emotions and opinions invert and turn sharp and terrible and hating, aimed at himself and himselves and everything- Monnie really, really does love himself a lot. Even if he finds bits of himselves annoying at times.
Heâs made of two halves that click just right, sometimes, despite being such laughable opposites in so many ways, a perfect mix of them both⌠and that topic of thought leads Monnie to an idea.
ââŚstrike a balance!â He tells himself triumphantly, setting down his tools and projects. âOne- two- one hour of hiking, and then work for a few more, and then dinner prep and another walk? Yeah, that seems fair.â
Both parts of him are in total agreement that being away from the farmhouse will be good; getting away from the oppressive silence and failure that lingers in the upstairs levels, choking and painful to even think on. That will ease the continuous worrying Leoâs coma causes for everyone.
Which Monnie isnât going to do, because he has a tree to climb and a forest to explore with new eyes and so very many things to accomplish after that.
Monnie steps away from the desk, humming pleasantly to himself an aimless but upbeat tune as he walks towards the barn doors. They open easy as anything for him- he has twice the strength of either side of him- and Monnie is bathed in the hot afternoon sun as he steps out.
The wind is sweet, the more indoors-y half of him finds delightedly, and he laughs to himself as he squints up at the blue, blue sky. It really is such a lovely day, and being himself makes it seem even lovelier.
Raph is on the porch currently, fiddling with what looks like his sketchbook, and staring at Monnie with something between exasperation and confusion. Monnie waves cheerily, and turns the motion into a quadruple flipoff as he absconds from the farmhouse lawn. Raph had been snappish and unpleasant to Mikey this morning when he just tried to say hi, and Monnie feels absolutely justified in flipping his brother off and explaining nothing of why heâs fused.
The forest welcomes him and the jaunty steps he takes speed up as it does. The trees are taller and thicker than anywhere in NYC, a hundred birds and small animals are just nearby, and the earthy rich scent of everything speaks to a nearly buried part of his brain.
It feels wonderful. The tug of duty and responsibility and guilt and love remains, tying Monnie to the farmhouse despite how much he just wants to run and run and never look back, but he lets none of those things seize hold of him.
Monnie will go home later, finish projects and make dinner for everyone- later. For now, he has a tree to climb.

Everything you should know about CBD-infused meals
From California to New York, infused meals have become a mainstay of today's cannabis culture, providing a focal point around which both enthusiasts and canna-curious may gather socially and learn about the plant. While THC-infused meals happen speakeasy style in states that have yet to pass adult use regulations, CBD-infused meals are ubiquitous, writes Danielle Guercio. Excitement over the Farm Bill has only increased the popularity of CBD, which functions both as an antidote to THC-induced anxiety and as a non-intoxicating baby step into exploring cannabis wellness. CBD-infused dishes are accessible to almost every kind of diner. From CBD-infused chocolates and sodas to gummies and powders, the skyrocketing demand for the cannabinoid has inspired many chefs to get creative in adapting it to their menus. To learn more about infusing CBD into our food â which, inevitably, means working in the cannabis plant's iconic flavor, thanks to a host of accompanying terpenes (aromatic compounds) â we asked a handful of cannabis entrepreneurs, creatives, and chefs to dish on what it's actually like to cook with CBD.
Whatâs the deal with dosage?
"Keeping control of your dose is crucial," says Ron Silver, chef/owner of Bubbyâs in New York City and founder of Azuca, a CBD-infused line of syrups and edibles. âWe look at CBD as medicine, and not something to be thrown around.â Silver says this is important to remember, and that just because there isnât a âhighâ from CBD doesnât mean itâs not doing something. âAs a sort of guideline, 25 milligrams a day is a pretty solid dose," he says. "Not too small, and not too massive.â But this isnât the end-all-be-all in the dosing department, especially since weâre all composed differently. Silver calls this âthe burning questionâ in the CBD field, stressing that anecdotal discussions may guide research around the topic. âOne close family member of mine who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis found relief in taking a massive dose of CBD, 500 milligrams, and then a 25-milligram dose two times a day, with a day off a week to 'reset' his system," he told Civilized. "This is what he came up with through talking to others with similar issues and comparing notes.â Not only does every body and its endocannabinoid system process cannabinoids differently, but there are also many different delivery methods for CBD, notes Rachel Burkons, co-founder of Altered Plates. There's also product quality to consider, she adds, as well as other cannabinoids and terpenes that may be present. Burkons is part of the team thatâs opening Chroma Lounge in West Hollywood, which will be among Los Angelesâ first cannabis consumption spaces. Working with cannabis and food, Burkons says she has yet to see an adverse reaction to "too much" CBD. "I think people should be able to move forward without fear," she says. For those looking to collect data on their cannabis experiences, Goldleaf journals offer a method for everyone (daily consumers, chefs, patients, growers, and so on) to catalogue things like dosage, strain, consumption method, and how they're feeling from it all. "Everyone is different. Our metabolisms, body weights, endocannabinoid systems, and many other factors very much affect the way we handle cannabinoids of any kind," says Charles McElroy, founder of Goldleaf. "Be weary of any âuniversalâ doses.â He advocates for dosing just one item in a mixed-tolerance meal, so consumers of different experience levels can have more agency over how much they consume.
Ingredients and delivery methods
The ingredients used to infuse a dish with CBD can greatly impact how it affects the consumer. Some products are coconut oil-based, which means they're great for garnishing or dressing food, but less so for frying or roasting, as the direct heat could degrade the delicate compounds, leaving less for the body to absorb â and, not to mention, a nasty taste if youâre not careful. Food hub Epicurious discussed this in a piece about incorporating CBD into meals. "Don't place CBD oil over direct heat," the article cautioned. "While warming the oil may increase its effectiveness, heating the oil too high can cause it to lose terpenes, volatile compounds that work in tandem with the CBD to increase the medical potency. Also, more importantly, it tastes absolutely foul.â Without being heated or cooked, the contents of a prepared, packaged, product (should presumably) remain unchanged for the duration of the shelf life. One study on the degradation of CBD points out that when you alter cannabinoids with heat or acid, it could change the dosage, and you may no longer be able to tell how much CBD is in something. Drinkable CBD products, depending on how they're made, may be digested as an edible or sublingual, which may make it a little easier to quantify the CBD than in tinctures and oils. âBeverages are a very good way of serving a controlled dose and being able to keep track ," Silver says. CBD can penetrate the skin when applied topically, and it passes through the tissues of the mouth, throat, and esophagus when vaped or placed under the tongue in tincture form. âSublingual administration refers to holding the drug in the mouth to allow the drug to be absorbed into the well-vascularized mucosa under the tongue," according to an article in Psychology Today about medicating with cannabinoids. "Absorption is fairly rapid and flows directly into the superior vena cava, a large vein that takes the drug first to the heart and then quickly into brain.â When cannabinoids are eaten, not all of them make it through our system, but there is still a benefit to edible CBD: âIf you are determined to eat your drug in a brownie or cookie, the blood levels of CBD, but not THC, are increased when consumed with food or just prior to eating.â
Terps are the word
Present terpenes can change the effects, as well as the taste and sensory experience of a meal. Since terpenes are the building blocks of flavor, as Burkons puts it, they can be played with as you would play with flavors in regular cooking. âI love a nice flavor-match, but I do find that contrasting terpene profiles tends to be the most dynamic," she says. "I find it is helpful to have people think about these flavors through the lens of food: sweet and spicy; citrus and herbal; acid and umami. These flavor combinations are classic across all food categories and definitely work if you're looking to pair a cannabis terpene with a specific flavor profile in a dish.â These scent and flavor compounds are a fundamental part of the whole plant extract, so using terpene-rich products could give you the entourage effect that our bodies love, using all of cannabisâ minor chemicals to interact with your system, not just CBD on its own. Terpenes like limonene, found in citrus, and caryophyllene, found in pepper, are among the most commonly added to food â and theyâre also found in full spectrum CBD extracts. Sometimes these are added separately, since terpenes can also come from food sources like lemon peels, or a sprig of rosemaryâs pungent pinene. All of the compounds must work together, Burkons says. "Similarly, due to the entourage effect, whole-plant derived terpenes can enhance or alter both the 'high' you'll get when consuming THCâand the efficacy of any medical benefits you're seeking in a CBD product.â The terpenes can shift the consumer's experience â even with CBD as the primary cannabinoid, says Katie Stem, CEO of Peak Extracts. âI think of terpenes like color sâ  it really is better to go for complementary or similar," she told Civilized. "We have had the most success with the terpenes that taste more like food or flowers. With our chocolate, the most delicious have been the fruity, piney or spicy varieties.â But Stem thinks each can have its home. Even the fuel-like diesel notes of some strains can meld with the right food, âThey could be very successful with something like grilled or spicy foods, that have bold, savory flavors,â she says. Stem described how terpenes come into play in Peakâs high-CBD, low-THC products, and being in a legal state, theyâre able to manufacture cannabis-derived CBD (as opposed to hemp-derived). âThereâs one thatâs derived from indica thatâs high in myrcene and geranyl acetate that I use in the evening or for relaxation, and the other is sativa derived and higher in things like pinene," she says. "They taste and feel different, even though none of them are intoxicating in the typical sense of the word.â Right now terpenes are so new to the mainstream consumer that it's unlikely that theyâll be the chief focus of cannabis food for the time being, though some like those behind Prank Bar in Los Angeles are beginning to experiment with these flavors. "The terpenes are what give THC and CBD nuance," says Stem. "Theyâre not just flavors, they change the way the cannabinoids interact with your body, right down to the receptors.â If you want to experiment with CBD and terpenes, seek out full spectrum extracts over isolate, which is just the CBD compound without the other plant constituents. Single strain options are available in adult use states, like what Peak Extracts offers, while the prohibition holdouts will see more hemp products, like Azuca CBD Simple Syrup.  (Rights of the text go to 420intel.com. Determining a Home Kitchen Renovation Spending Plan - Including Value to Your Residence Property Market Value
Determining a Home Kitchen Renovation Spending Plan - Including Value to Your Residence Property Market Value
It is extremely essential to figure out an allocate any residence enhancement task, as well as kitchen area improvement in miami is actually no exemption.
A word of vigilance: I spent many hours investigating personalized kitchen space renovating expense as well as budgeting on the web to compile information for this short article. I ran into a married couple web sites that offered square footage pricing for kitchen redesign. I sympathize along with their try to find a simple method to think out cabinetries upgrading costs, this kind of advise is actually not located in truth. Kitchen Remodeling Miami Beach
Like just about anything else in this particular planet a home kitchen remodel is actually visiting set you back much more than you presumed it would and also the sky is excess on what it may set you back depending upon your tastes. There are numerous variables that enter into calculating a remodeling budget.
The truly wonderful factor about this document is actually that it gives an explanation of the "common" job so that you can easily assess if your kitchen area remodel is actually going to fall above or even beneath the benchmark. I also discover their typical rates to be actually a correct representation of the prices for our company, therefore through encouraging to clients before I even meet along with all of them that they investigate this report they are actually much more very likely to develop a practical budget our team can function within to offer all of them a wonderful kitchen space.
Custom Hutch built along with Semi-Custom Cabinets
While Remodeling Magazine's file is extremely beneficial, it is actually still an incredibly one dimension matches all method to creating a finances. If you 'd such as to try to polish your varieties a bit, always keep reviewing.
Go out a pad and also newspaper and also write a couple of details about each factor as you look at this list:
Aspect 1 Home Value- Consider not only what you presume your house deserves, however likewise the value of identical houses in your community that already have updates. My beloved website to examine residence values is zillow.com, just enter your deal with as well as you get an active chart with home market values and also various other relevant information provided straight on the map. Keep in mind of which homes are actually of similar size to all yours, have been actually obtained much more just recently, yet possess a higher value, then peek in their windows to observe what our home seems like. Ok, very seriously, I was simply joking. If you do not recognize all of them perhaps it's opportunity to comply with the neighbors and seek a simple tour.
Factor 2 Wow! - This has every thing to perform with your objectives as well as inspirations. List each motivational variable which is actually crucial to you in a home kitchen remodel. Below are some possible instances: Kitchen is breaking down. You adore to prepare and the layout does not match you. You adore to delight as well as prefer to open up the kitchen area as a place to compile. You prefer a kitchen space that impresses your visitors. You are preparing to sell your property and also the kitchen is actually a sticking factor along with customers ... Now that you possess your listing, analyze which inspirations are actually very most essential and relist all of them in inspirational purchase. Picturing your budget beginning in "the center" bear in mind of which elements may move the budget up or even down ... i.e. would like to redesign to encourage a sale could relocate the finances down, upgrading to impress attendee could max it out ... etc
. Aspect 3 Did a person say AGA? - List any sort of "has to riches" for a home kitchen remodel to be actually worth it to you. Possible examples: stone counters, an island along with an additional sink, a 2nd dishwashing machine, an office premium gas variation, etc
. Factor 4 Longevity- Determine to the absolute best of your potential the length of time you intend on having the residence.
Element 5 Size Matters- Determine what percentage of your residence your kitchen area incorporates. A testing of over 100 present day residence floorplans of 1000 to 3000 square feet houses uncovered the typical kitchen space square video footage to be actually 7% of the residence's square footage. , if your home kitchen is actually larger or even smaller than this standard you might need to enhance or lessen your budget plan as needed.
 .
Element 6 Layout- if you presently know you're heading to prefer the sink relocated, an island sink added, an indoor wall surface moved and an outside door included, after that you need to have to incorporate amount of money to your spending plan effectively past what a general face lift would certainly cost.
Tricky style: the attractive pillar conceals an audio wrapped drainpipe water pipes
Aspect 7 Funding- Determine the optimum quantity of cash you could manage to invest. , if you are funding your task you can determine what a lending institution is going to likely provide you.. Lenders desire to view a financial debt to revenue proportion( DTI) of.36 or much less. Your DTI is developed through taking all your month to month debt responsibilities (credit history card repayments, auto car loans, home loan, etc.) and also dividing through your monthly revenue. To determine your max safe regular monthly personal debt multiply.36 opportunities your monthly income. Today subtract your existing month to month debt from this amount and also you possess a month-to-month budget maximum. Listed here is actually a web link to a calculator that will certainly carry out the mathematics for you: home mortgage personal digital assistant
 Putting all of it Together
The secret to identifying your spending plan is actually finding the portion of your home's market value you need to make use of as a budget tip. While researching this post I stumbled upon suggestions to utilize portions varying from 10% to 25% of home value. For a kitchen remodel of any sort of drug that features new flooring, home appliances, cabinets, sink/faucet, lighting fixtures and also taking power unobjectionable I find just about anything less than 15% to become a really dubious variety. I expect on a million buck residence 10% will be actually a workable budget plan, however on a 200k residence a 20k spending plan is marginal at best for a total blown cooking area remodel.
If resale value is important to you it is important to keept the price of your home kitchen restoration job within 20% of the current worth of your house. Remaining within this assortment guarantees that a large number of the new cooking area's expense is redeemed in enhanced house worth quickly, and also the remaining price ought to be actually gotten back within 5 years as your property appreciates.
Ok, permitted's run via an example. Always remember, there is no specific formula right here. Our experts are just performing our absolute best to be as notified as feasible as well as create a wise choice concerning just how much to invest on our home kitchen remodel.
For our instance permit's utilize my residence. It is actually a fifty's peninsula cod with a reasonable square footage of 1500.
Element 1 market value: Zillow offers me a predicted market value of $167,500, nonetheless, I see zillow hasn't yet improved and also accounted for the single household properties which were actually lately built in the field responsible for our team with a starting cost of $270k. I'm going to locate my budget plan on a rate of 180k which is identical to various other properties in the neighborhood that are the very same measurements.
Factor 2 Goals: My partner and I love to accommodate guests. To create a kitchen area remodel rewarding for our team we require to shed an indoor wall surface to open up the kitchen area and also dining nook to the sitting room. I'm visiting include 1% to budget this.
Variable 3 Must Haves: As a former chef two should haves for me are a brand new stove and a really nice gas array( no natural fuel company right here), preferably an office variation customized for property make use of (genuine business selections do not have insulation around the oven, crucial for property protection). I am actually visiting include another 1% to my budget plan to be sure there is actually sufficient cash to receive me my array and lp installment.
Element 4 Longevity: Our company consider to remain in our house a lowest of 4 years. Generally of thumb it takes 5 years for many upgrading to appreciate and also recoup each of its price. Because our team are going to likely be listed below a minimum of 5 years I'm not mosting likely to punish the budget, however since there is actually an excellent chance our team'll move straight around 5 years I'm not mosting likely to increase it like I would if our company were actually staying a lot longer.
Factor 5 Size of Kitchen: Our kitchen area has to do with 140SquareFeet( SF). That's over 9% of the SF of our home, 2% over average. Obviously this kitchen is mosting likely to need some extra product and cabinets. I'm going to up the finances 1% for this, I wish it is actually enough.
Factor 6 Layout: Our team are going to alter the layout of our home kitchen fairly substantially. I am actually going to add one more 1% to my finances, once more hoping $1800 (1% of our 180k worth) is enough to cover the electric as well as pipes modifications.
As I pointed out before, there are going to be actually folks who are going to claim along with me on that, but going lower usually does not leave you with workable finances amounts for full wasted home kitchen remodels. This offers me a functioning budget plan of 24% x 180k= $43,200 When I review this to the Cost Vs. Value record I see that in the Middle Atlantic Region a Major Kitchen Renovation is $59, 098. On the other palm my kitchen is actually considerably smaller than their 200SF standard, so I think I'll go along with my finances variety and see what my professional can do for me in that spending plan.
Given that the kitchen is a high web traffic region regularly, generating an operational design is actually essential when considering your kitchen area redesigning suggestions. When creating your kitchen space upgrading ideas you should think concerning the on call space you have and afterwards obtain creative.
 Using Kitchen Remodeling Software
Many of the cooking area renovation software application is extremely user-friendly; the measures are as very easy as 1-2-3 or even A-B-C. A conventional or traditional home kitchen makeover, if formed over the last years ought to have the "cuneate" basics, in which the sink, oven, and also fridge get on triangular angles along with a major area in the kitchen space center, to ensure that it would certainly be much easier for the mother or even the lady of the house to move.
Making an excellent small home kitchen renovating layout factors you to the various distinct closet styles and area styles providing your tiny home kitchen a terrific sense of area. Whether you develop the kitchen area your own self, team up with a kitchen space upgrading professional or even residence center, developing a strategy will certainly be the 1st step. An additional pro to remodeling your kitchen is actually the reality that you will, practically, be obtaining a brand new kitchen.
Any type of redesigning suggestion for a tiny home kitchen have to take care of the complying with problems: counter top space, storing, built-ins, and also cupboard. When considering a kitchen area renovating task, the finances is the very first thing to look at. Whether you've got a large budget or a tiny one for your kitchen space redesigning venture, it is actually important to try to make sure your investing does not spin out of control as the method carries on.
Do not fret if it will definitely take time for you to create and sketch out your plan or design, excellent and also best kitchen area upgrading concepts must be created, considering that it needs to be perfect and useful to you as well as your loved ones. Make sure that your home kitchen renovating concepts are actually certainly not that unlikely or far-out, align it in your household's lifestyle and also regular activities; this would certainly provide you a brighter plan on your kitchen space layout and also type. The interactive kitchen layout renovating style plans specifically are real-life award victors, and with its own cutting-edge method, the whole entire plan is actually certain to satisfy along with its client-driven system.
It goes without saying the details is actually gathered you can begin to put all the reconstruct, as well as identify exactly how you can adjust your cooking area remodeling task desires with you finances restrictions. After that locate the finest yet affordable kitchen area upgrading solutions in your location once you've ultimately chosen on the standard picture of your refurbished kitchen space.
Though remodeling a kitchen area can be a significant disruption to the individual, the finished item will swiftly wipe out the brief aggravation. , if you have a large kitchen area remodeling venture you are going to need to prepare up a short-lived cooking area a different component of the home.. Some of the a lot of various other pros to home kitchen makeover is actually one that you could certainly not always have thought about in the past.

They're practically completely comprised from simple carbohydrates and possess little bit of to no dietary worth, however in the midst of running 100 miles what our experts most need are simply absorbable fats which give our company the electricity to maintain pushing our own selves at a high degree. While you will not likely join the NBA if you're under 5'9", you have the ability to become physically fit. If the Particular Period gets on the longer edge (6-10 full weeks) the jogger can easily sometimes fit in a competition mid stage (3-6 weeks of objective competition) as a great tune-up competition as well as often will certainly see good end results. My tasks at hand may be uncertain, so I must be actually a little pliable with my routine, piling on kilometers on times that I have additional opportunity and also approving that some times all I can fit in is a 30 minute jog. Along with the rest of the high descent boring, I got to Roaring Springs and also rapidly blended the second packet from electricity grain right into my bottle. I agree, that the fervor degree directly impacts the chosen electricity supply unit however as long as this device doesn't actively deliver energy, it's maintaing price will be pretty low. They encourage taking in the Sports Drink Mix 30-45 minutes before a lengthy instruction celebration or even competition. Activity theory can be utilized to examine all type of actions, and also as the Economic expert highlighted a number of full weeks ago, these same principles could be put on sporting activity. Really good headlines: that produced an also flatter program (saving our team the 12 overlooks the American River). So, I did Thirty Minutes on the rowing maker, at that point as I was scrolling with my Audiofuel playlist seeking the Pyramid Max 180 period session, I saw the Sennheiser With The Gears keep track of which is my outright preferred Audiofuel monitor as that offers you such a superb workout session on the treadmill, so I gave that a blast, then I took place the cross-trainer for TWENTY minutes. Thus when, in my 30's, I began getting involved in the coaching edge of the sporting activity I possessed almost 3 decades from take in, reading as well as examining to reason. In 2015, the Organization Athletes For Openness (AFT), an institution that may be parallelled to the CSC, cultivated the SHOL (Sporting activity and Health On-Line) Platform for ITRA. But I looked at that publication and also I recognized exactly how simple that would certainly be to administer, to make a vegetarian diet plan match to his rules. Transactions the whole entire mix to an 8 x 8 in baking recipe edged along with paper or even fridge freezer paper and spread evenly. The end results found no considerable distinctions in resting power expenditure in between both groups. Keep in mind, they have modern technology 50-100 years past what the general public is aware of. 'Hidden Sciences', right stuff they teach the general public is waste antiquated junk scientific research off a thousand years back. From a physical standpoint this makes it possible for the body system to soothe into its target selection extra effectively as well as along with a lesser energy shed price as well as blood stream lactate level in comparison to a more abrupt begin permits. In the beginning, Wong thought about if they will all got some uncommon exotic illness or a disease, but absolutely nothing quite fit.
Kitchen Remodeling Miami Beach
Kitchen improvement is actually one of one of the most popular of upgrading jobs each year, as cooking areas have actually become the center of task in the residence. Kitchen space improvement is actually the residence renovation work that includes the a lot of market value to your house. Yakkin' About Baseball: A Team Made Entirely Out Of Beards
Welcome to Yakkin' about Baseball with David Roth and David Raposa. It's Friday and we're, uh, yakkin' about baseball, and later period Kenneth Branagh. Join us.
David Roth: I've been saying this for years, and it seems like everyone is finally admitting it: Zack Cozart is the most valuable player in baseball. The only person to predict that was me, in the Yakkin' About Baseball Season Preview, which is available only to subscribers of our Cyberdust account.
David Raposa: Smash that non-existent Patreon donate button. According to Fangraphs, the only player with a higher WAR than Cozart is Bryce Harper. I for one can't wait for all the misguided articles about Cozart's inevitable Yankee contract.
David Roth: The Reds are going to trade him for a bunch of good prospects and I'm here for it. The Reds have a few of my favorite goofy baseball types and I wish good things for them. I would like to see Billy Hamilton try to score after tagging up from second base on a fairly deep fly ball in a game that matters. I would like to live my life in the way that Adam Duvall approaches his at-bats, at least until the hangovers get to be too much.
David Raposa: Sadly one of those goofy baseball types is "hilariously ineffectual starting pitchers."
David Roth: The obvious way forward for the Reds is to take all their washout pitching prospects, turn them into multi-inning relievers, and then pitch them in a slightly different order every day.
David Raposa: A staff of substandard Chris Devenskis? I can dig it.
David Roth: While other teams are using effective pitchers, the next great innovators are already disrupting the idea of "keeping your team in the game, for a while."
David Raposa: It's June, and the Milwaukee Brewers and Minnesota Twins are (as of this typing) first place teams. In a season where Brett Gardner is a serious threat to go yardâlike, in a traditional, over-the-fence fashionâit only makes sense for those two teams to run the table and meet in the World Series.
David Roth: Until we see evidence to the contrary, I have no choice but to agree with you that this is true and bet all the money I have on that specific outcome. It's hard to know what is sustainable, but I think there's a chance Cozart is having a real Daniel Murphy Moment. By which I mean not suddenly getting really upset about no-gender bathrooms, but abruptly becoming a genius because he moved three inches in the batter's box. That is why he is my June Superstar of choice.
Just a pair of home run threats. Photo by Kevin Sousa-USA TODAY Sports
David Raposa: He's probably going to be a good player for years to come, but I'm still holding out hope that Aaron Judge becomes nothing more than a post-Pog Kevin Maas. Once a Red Sox fan, always uh hoping that various Yankees revert to Maas. It's petty, but that is my heart.
David Roth: I implore you to keep the big picture in mind: there is a chance Aaron Judge hits a baseball through the windows of the odious sports bar at Yankee Stadium, exploding Rudy Giuliani's plate of loaded potato skins and Giuliani is like "aaaahhh." If only for that reason we should all give him our support.
David Raposa: On the "favorite June superstar" tip, I'd like to give both Ryan Schimpf and Joey Gallo an honorable mention, for taking Three True Outcomes worship to absurd extremes that even Rob Deer couldn't have dreamed.
David Roth: I have been wanting to write something about that but I don't have an angle really beyond "yo these two guys have a 700-point spread between their batting averages and OPS'" and a still in progress attempt to create a metric to fit the acronym SCAMPI to describe that thing.
David Raposa: Stop Chasing Average; Make Pitches Impossibletocatch. I'll send you my Direct Deposit info shortly.
David Roth: Both Schimpf and Gallo currently have more homers than singles. Which, again, is a brave and stupid way to live one's life.
David Raposa: Who needs one base, when you can have four?
David Raposa: Speaking (kinda) of the Brewersâdon't hold me to this, but I think they actually might be a legitimate contender? God bless the Twins always, but outside of Jose Berrios showing signs of becoming a legitimate ace and Ervin Santana juking his peripherals, there's not much there, pitching wise.
David Roth: I've confirmed that Mike Pelfrey is no longer on the team and so must agree with you.
Arguably DJ is better than Chad Qualls. Photo by Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports
David Raposa: Milwaukee, on the other hand, actually has some arms. And bats. And Kenneth Branagh's Hercule Poirot as a mascot.
David Roth: Definitely bats, definitely a mascot who would do a good job priggishly solving murders committed on old-timey trains. All their pitchers seem like slightly different versions of the same guy. I know that Zach Davies is the only big league pitcher who could be played by DJ Qualls in a movie. I know Chase Anderson is slightly bulkier than him. But I cannot prove, and I would imagine you can also not prove, that they are in fact different people. We just don't have that data yet.
David Raposa: To get serious for a sec: both ACE Anderson and Jimmy Nelson have been good to great, and MLB's number one Static X fan Matt Garza has been surprisingly solid. If Junior Guerra is healthy and Zach Davies doesn't get pantsed during the school talent show, they have a shot ... of maybe playing one more game in October against the National League West juggernaut that doesn't win the division. Baseball!
David Roth: I assume you are talking about the Colorado Rockies. A very good baseball team that also looks like one of those barbershop hairstyle posters but every look is Guy Who Strikes Out 160 Or More Times.
David Raposa: Not to keep on bringing it back to STATS like some stupid NERD, but ... it looks like they might have some pitching to go with those taters. And not just on some 2007 "Jeff Francis and Aaron Cook and be quick with the hook" tip, either.
Maybe "barbershop" was the wrong joke. Photo by Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports
David Roth: I am prepared to believe it. This may be the earliest in any season that I have realized that I have no idea what I'm watching.
David Raposa: There's nothing to "get" about baseball, especially this year. Exhibit A, B, C, and D being Scooter Gennett.
David Roth: Scooter Gennett, widely reviled supporting character in The Phantom Menace, friend to Jar-Jar Binks, man who hit four home runs in a big league game. He basically had his entire 2015 season in three hours. I am just sad he is not with the Brewers, although I guess him and Jett Bandy on the Brewers in the same lineup is just too much George Lucas Baseball Name. Given what the Mets do to deface this game every damn day, have you chosen to adopt another team?
David Raposa: I'm just loving the game as a whole, maaaaan. As long as SNY keeps their broadcasters, though, the Mets will always be that annoying dirtbag friend I can't help but like.
David Roth: I would like to, say, adopt the Brewers, provided broadcasts could still come with Keith Hernandez free-associating about Badfinger records and sighing. Or I guess the Diamondbacks, but if they didn't have Tactical Uniforms and play in Arizona. And if staying up late to watch them play wouldn't lead me to embarrass myself with weird questions at Senate hearings. Although I guess this explains why Sen. McCain kept asking James Comey about Chris Owings on Thursday.
David Raposa: I'm sure he thinks the Dansby Swanson trade was the result of a Russian hack.
David Roth: Staying up late into the night to watch the Diamondbacks and Padres is honestly the most maverick-y thing McCain has ever done. Cursing in front of journalists isn't Maverick. An octogenarian staying up until 1:30 in the morning to watch Fernando Rodney face Manuel Margot is fucking Maverick.
David Raposa: Whom among us...

New Post has been published on https://atticusblog.com/apples-mac-revenue-is-up-year-over-year-but-its-self-deception/
Appleâs Mac Revenue is Up Year-Over-Year, But itâs Self-Deception
All through Appleâs Q2 2017 Income Report, Apple CEO Tim Cook referred to that demand for the most recent MacBook Seasoned stays strong and that Mac revenue grew through 14 present 12 months-over-year. At the surface, this seems like something to crow about, however, it is able to be definitely all that glitters.
In Q2 of 2016, Apple offered four.034 million Macs which generated $five.107 billion in revenue. In Q2 of 2017, Apple sold 4.199 million Macs, and that generated $5.844 billion in sales. So unit income had been up four percentage 12 months-over-year, but revenue becomes up through 14 percent. This needs to be because of the truth that, as Tim Cook dinner said inside the Earnings Document, demand for the latest MacBook Pro stays robust. And thatâs one of the extra expensive Macs in the lineup, so elevated revenue and Mac ASP is anticipated.
On the surface, this looks like something to be glad approximately, and Mr. Cook took the opportunity to specific his pleasure.
What these numbers advise is that while the 2016 MacBook Seasoned with Contact Bar is popular, its sales are masking an average decline in the income of different Macs. Thatâs no longer unexpected. The Mac mini changed into last up to date in October 2014. The MacBook Air became final up to date in March 2015. The iMac became remaining up to date in October 2015. And the closing MacBook was ultimate up to date in April of 2016.
at the same time as Apple is taking part in the advantages of the MacBook Seasoned income, that enthusiasm canât last forever. The query is, can Apple replace its other Macs in a well-timed fashion in order that as the demand for the modern day MacBook Pro fades, different Macs can absorb the slack?
All we know is that we can anticipate new iMacs inside the fall and nothing else. If the call for the MBP endures, Apple can skate for one extra area or. However, if that MBP, announced in October of 2016 with a Skylake CPU looks to be an increasing number of elderly in comparison to trendy services from HP and Microsoft, it may be a hard Q3 and This fall for Macs.
I assume itâs top notch that Apple has organized things in order that Mac revenue is up with the aid of 14 percentage 12 months-over-yr. I simply donât assume, given its modern and deliberate Mac portfolio, Apple can hold up this type of switch of awareness. Emphasizing a developing Mac sales without corresponding, exciting new products phased in is a brief-time period, Band-Useful resource method. For my part, Appleâs enthusiasm for this as a long lasting approach is unjustified.
Is Apple the Best Phone Maker?
They go through loads, include a fab magnetic sporting case (which also adds 24-hour fee, to the point wherein we do now not even come close to going for walks away from us during the evaluate) and loose you from the wires however this feels extra like reference designs for future wi-fi Apple gadgets than the ought to have accent iPhone.
The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus the identical aluminum housing and the most effective difference is the placement of the antenna lines. Now, they arc reducing corners instead of the back. The new iPhones even proportion the identical respective display screen size as iPhone closing 12 months: a four.7-inch the show at the 7, and a five.5-inch display screen for the 7 Plus.
The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus lawfully to the most interesting, opinionated, effective phones Apple has ever shipped, and the maximum self-confident expression of the vision of the company in a long term. IOS 10 is extraordinary, the cameras are higher, and the overall performance is phenomenal. And longer battery life. These are first rate phones.

1: Correct stuff
2: Water resistance
3: Improved cameras
4: the higher existence of the battery
5: exquisite display
6: Topic motor comments is neat
7: Twin digital camera zoom on the 7 Plus is exceptional
But the differences among the old and new fashions are nonetheless being felt, and theyâre in particular evident inside the new shades: black and jet black. Jet black is provided with a âpristine, replicate surfaceâ and a high gloss finish.
The new Twin audio system that the fireplace from the earphones and the lowest of the phone, additionally had to move someplace, which starts to give an explanation for why the iPhone 7 7.1mm thick
âThe high gloss finish of the jet black iPhone 7 is done by a precision-nine-step anodization and polishing technique,â said Apple. âThe floor is as hard as other anodized Apple merchandise, but, display the excessive gloss fine micro-abrasions utilization If you are worried approximately, we advocate one of the many cases available to guard your iPhone..â
however, theyâre additionally incomplete. The most exciting issue of The brand new Twin digital camera of the iPhone 7 Plus isnât delivery at launch. Appleâs making a large guess on iMessage and Siri in iOS apps 10, but it has no longer paid off yet. Apps are not updated to the Coptic engine or use The brand new huge shade gamut show. The complete ecosystem of The new headphones and adapters which might be had to make using Lightning and wireless audio is really out of the ground. most effective Apple or Beats headphones provide the great wi-fi audio revel in, and also you may not like how they sound or healthy. By the point builders even come near hitting the overall performance limits of the A10 Fusion chip, Apple will of the A11 Fusion Seasoned transmission with six knives

INTERVIEW: Tynion Prepares Batman for War in Detective Comics
SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for âDetective Comicsâ #951, on sale Wednesday.
âDetective Comicsâ writer James Tynion IV says Batman is âan overcompensation,â a possible outcome of what happens when the worst thing in the world happens to someone. As he explains, you can either collapse in the face of it or, if youâre Bruce Wayne, you can build yourself into the perfect being in order to prevent that âworst thingâ from ever happening again.
Now that Batman has found his skewed version of a happy place, heâs assembling an army of likeminded crimefighters for a coming war â a war against a soldier who wears a button with a smiling face on it and, of course, some smeared blood. Over the course of our conversation, the writer discussed his excitement for the upcoming âBatmanâ/âThe Flashâ crossover, âThe Button,â promising that the events of the DC Universe/Watchmen event will âabsolutelyâ resonate in âDetective Comicsâ and beyond.
Tynion shared many details of the core figures in his DC Comicsâ series, namely Clayface, Batwoman, Orphan and Spoiler, as well as teased upcoming plot details for both âDetective Comics,â currently illustrated by Christian Duce Fernandez, and âBatwoman,â the new series heâs co-writing with Marguerite Bennett, which is drawn by Steve Epting.
CBR: There is a line in âDetective Comicsâ #950 when Tim asks Bruce quite bluntly, âWhy are you preparing for a war?â Is he talking about events coming in the âLeague of Shadowsâ arc, or something bigger â perhaps involving Mr. Oz and a certain button with a smiley face and blood splatter on it?
James Tynion IV: There are all of these very dark things on the horizon that Batman sees coming. I canât really hint what those things are, but I will say that itâs not just whatâs coming in the pages of âDetective Comics.â This is whatâs coming across the entire DC Universe.
Orphan, Spoiler, Clayface even Batwoman are all broken or at least have relationship issues that are severely strained. When building an army for this coming war, why does Batman decide to surround himself with broken soldiers?
When I was choosing the members for his team, I thought Batman was very much about choosing people who he sees elements of himself in. Those are the people that he trusts. Gotham is a dark place, and a lot of bad things have happened to a lot of these Gotham characters. Each one of them represents a different aspect of Batman, and there is no character that represents that more than the original Robin. They each have a core piece of tragedy or pathos in them that they share. Thatâs why they were able to form such a powerful relationship.
With Batwoman, Spoiler, Orphan, and even Azrael and Batwing, all of these characters have the drive that comes from overcompensating from a point, which is what Batman is. At the end of the day, Batman is an overcompensation. Heâs what happens when the worst thing in the world happens to you. You can either collapse in the face of that, or you can build yourself into the perfect being in order to prevent that from ever happening again. Each of these people is doing that in different ways and is currently on different steps in the path.
When you look at a character like Clayface, he had something horrible happen to him and that horrible thing made everyone see him as a monster and then he allowed himself to become a monster. And Batman recognized this. At this moment, Batman is at an even higher point of awareness and he needs to see that people can overcome these parts of themselves for reasons⌠for reasons that I canât share just yet. [Laughs]
Letâs leave the Watchmen and those who will be watching the Watchmen behind for now. No spoilers here, because sheâs featured on the cover of âDetective Comicsâ #951, but Shiva is back in Gotham and she appears to be connected to Cassandra Cain. This is DC Rebirth, so things might be different, but pre-Rebirth, Shiva was Cassandraâs mother. Is that still the case?
Youâre right. You saw in âDetective Comicsâ #950 that Shiva still has some designs on Cassandra. In the current continuity, those two characters have not shown up together yet. You guys are going to have to go along for the ride, but youâre right â in classic DCU continuity, Shiva was Cassandraâs mother. This is the story that will answer the question of whether or not that is currently true, and what that means to Orphan if it is true.
What we know about the League of Shadows so far is that it was basically a myth that Raâs al Ghul propagated. It was conceived as an idea that would let him take credit for terrorist attacks all over the world and all of these other things. He hinted that it was this shadowy cabal, which allowed him total control. Itâs something Batman has gone out and searched for and, to his knowledge, he has no proof that the League actually exists. So when the Colony came in during my first arc, âRise of the Batmen,â to eliminate these sleepers, Batman saw it as Jacob Kane basically buying into a conspiracy in order to enact his dark agenda. And weâre going to discover exactly whoâs been right and whoâs been wrong and how all of these characters connect to one another. But the League of Shadows is an independent group of the League of Assassins, and weâre going to slowly understand more and more exactly how dangerous they are, and how theyâve they operating from the outside in the DC Universe.
If we go by the solicitations, it appears that Batman and Raâs may be joining forces in this arc. Is this a case of the enemy of my enemy is my friend?
[Laughs] Weâll definitely see them interacting. I donât want to tip my hand just yet. The relationship between Raâs and Batman is one of the most interesting relationships between any nemesis and hero in all of comics. Raâs is a character that I have been fascinated by since I first started writing so bringing him into this story and exploring the ways in which he is connected to the League of Shadows and the ways in which he isnât is a lot if fun. I canât go into specifics just yet but he will definitely play a very major part as the story reaches its climax.
Again, you mentioned Jacob Kane and he is, of course, the father of Kate Kane. Now that you are writing a new âBatwomanâ series with Marguerite Bennett, will Kate be leaving âDetective Comicsâ?
No, she will absolutely be a part of both series. Kateâs day job is working with the Batman Family in âDetective Comics,â and her own private missions that take her all over the world in between her missions in âDetectiveâ are what will be covered in the âBatwomanâ series. âDetectiveâ will remain a fairly Gotham-centric book, while âBatwomanâ will be very global in its scope.
I think Kate Kane is one of the most fascinating characters in the DC Universe. I love how she plays on the core Batman mythos, but she also has some very big differences right in the heart of the character. Batmanâs parents were killed when he was just a kid and then he set out to become the perfect thing to fight that specific crime. He set out across the world to train and build himself to this point where he is the Batman â this real force of nature.
A similar thing happened to Kate. Her mother was killed and she believed at the time that her sister was killed, as well, and she started building herself to become the perfect soldier to fight the kind of terror that killed her parent. But the thing thatâs different in her character is that there came a point where she was about to achieve what she wanted to achieve. She was about to graduate from West Point and actually become a real soldier and she would have been one of the best soldiers of all-time â she was on the path to being DCâs Captain America â but that path was ripped away from her and then she was lost. She then stumbled through the world for a few years. And that is the thing that Kate has that Bruce doesnât. She knew what she needed to become, there was a single drive to her path, but then that was no longer an option. She had nothing to become anymore. And itâs that lost period, before she came back to Gotham and saw Batman for the first time and realized the costume could be the way that she served, which is wholly unique to her. She has the same drive as Bruce, the same ferocity as Bruce. But she can see failure in a way that Bruce canât. And that can give her incredible strength in a wholly different way. And thatâs something that Marguerite and I are very interested in exploring. And we really needed a singular series to explore it to its full extent because at the end of the day, her role in âDetectiveâ will always be about her relationships with Batman and the other characters, including her father, around her. âBatwoman,â the ongoing series, is about her relationship with herself. And the fact that she knows that the path can get ripped away from her so thatâs why in âBatwoman Rebirth,â we see a glimpse of what would happen if that path was ripped away from her again, what could she become and would it become something good or would it become something really frightening. There is so much material [Laughs] There could be five years of âBatwomanâ stories just based on the my first conversation with Marguerite so I am very excited for everyone to see what weâve got cooking.
Can Batman/Bruce and Spoiler/Stephanie repair their relationship or are we past the point of no return?
I very pleased with the final speech that Bruce gave at the end of âDetective Comicsâ #947. That when he said that heâs not willing to go out there and cut her down. He disagrees with the points that Spoiler is making but he sees why sheâs doing it. She hasnât just made the switch and become an unrepentant villain. She just doesnât agree with how Batman operates in Gotham City. And that launches her into the next part of her story that weâll be picking up on right after the âLeague of Shadowsâ arc. Spoiler will definitely continue to be a part of this book, especially as we move forward with the dangling thread of where is Tim Drake and whatâs up with him.
Thatâs a nice place to end, because I wanted to ask you about Tim Drake. I know you canât talk about the war thatâs coming, but all points are leading to the fact that Tim is going to be a part of it, as is the mysterious character that is holding Tim captive. Will those events and the upcoming âBatman/The Flashâ crossover âThe Buttonâ tie-into âDetective Comicsâ?
I will definitely say that fans of âDetective Comicsâ should absolutely read âThe Buttonâ when it comes out. Fans of DC Comics, really everyone, should pick up âThe Button.â This is the first of a few launching points that will send us into the next year of stories. Iâm very excited for everyone to see what weâve got cooking but at this point, I canât even hint at the shapes coming in the dark but there are shapes in the dark and they are coming. [Laughs] There are going to be a lot of really big, really cool stories coming up that Iâm very excited to take part in.
âDetective Comicsâ #951 goes on sale February 22.
