Bollywood Movies Part CLXXIV

Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor), king of Mewar, goes to Sinhala where he falls in love with Padmavati (Deepika Padukone) and marries her. Meanwhile, Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh) ascends the throne of the Delhi Sultanate by murdering his uncle and father-in-law Jalaluddin Khilji (Raza Murad). When Alauddin hears of Padmavati’s beauty, he lays siege to Mewar’s capital Chittor to claim her.

TW for movie: ritual mass suicide. For a film that had so much controversy surrounding it, Padmaavat is surprisingly boring. Shahid Kapoor and Deepika Padukone have no chemistry. Many of Ratan Singh’s and Padmavati’s dialogues are very preachy. The dying at the end takes entirely too long. However, Ranveer Singh is fantastic in his villainous role, as is Jim Sarbh as Alauddin’s eunuch general Malik Kafur. Favorite songs are Khalibali and Ek Dil Ek Jaan. Neither song has subtitles.

Naina Mathur (Rani Mukerji), a teacher with Tourette’s , gets her first job teaching the students of 9F at her former school St. Notker’s. The students of 9F are from the local municipal school that was dismantled due to its lease being up. Naina must work to gain their trust and figure out how to engage their interest in the material, as her job hinges on the class passing their final exams.

Hichki is about a teacher using her life experience to help her students. The movie is very predictable, but is still good despite this. Rani Mukerji does wonderfully in her role, but the students are the highlight of the film from gambling Ravinder (Swaraj Kumar) and rapping Ashwin (Benjamin Yangal) to okra obsessed Tamanna (Poorti Jai Agarwal) and rat toting Tara (Riya Shukla.) Harsh Mayar is spectacular as Aatish who lashes out against their new teacher due to his trust issues. Neeraj Kabi is good as Naina’s foil Mr. Wadia, the teacher of 9A. Favorite songs are Madamji Go Easy and Khol De Par.

Sehmat (Alia Bhatt) follows in her father’s (Rajat Kapur) footsteps as a spy for India when she learns he is dying from lung cancer. After a crash course in spying, she is married to Iqbal Syed (Vicky Kaushal), the son of a Brigadier General (Shishir Sharma). Even though her position is precarious, Sehmat works hard to infiltrate the household and find information for India.

Raazi is a fascinating spy story that shows the intricacies of espionage and also shows the consequences. Based on the novel Calling Sehmat by Harinder Sikka, itself based on the account of an actual spy in the early ‘70s, Raazi does not shy away from showing how complicated living such a double life can become. It is nuanced and makes the all the characters sympathetic. Alia Bhatt performs admirably as Sehmat and Vicky Kaushal is also quite good in his role. Favorite song are Raazi and Ae Watan. Neither song has subtitles.

Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor’s incredible transformation for Padmaavat will surprise you, view PICS

After a lot of protests and controversies, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus Padmaavatstarring Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone finally hit the screens on 25th January, 2018. It all started when the members of Karni Sena had an issue with a rumored dream sequence between Alauddin Khilji aka Ranveer and Rani Padmavati aka Deepika.

The film is currently basking in praise and has already crossed Rs 100 crore mark in just 4 days. Apart from it being a commercial success, the movie has been lauded for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s grand vision, hard-hitting story, and detailed characters.

Moreover, we can’t ignore the fact that it took a lot of pain and effort to create the look forthe characters. Today, we got our hands on a few pictures that reflect the arduous yet incredible transformation of Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor into epic characters – Alauddin Khilji and Maharawal Ratan Singh respectively.

Ranveer Singh essays the role of Sultan Alauddin Khilji, who is fierce and eccentric. The kohl-lined eyes created the right drama and showed us the malevolent side of the actor. Talking about Shahid Kapoor, this was the first time he was playing a royal character. His makeover was drastic, the bloodstained face was a look created for the dungeon sequence scene when the king was kept captive.

Meanwhile, Ranveer had earlier confessed that it was difficult for him to say yes to the part as he would have to get in touch with dark sides inside him. In an interview to a leading daily, Ranveer had said, “I discovered that the trouble was that I was only doing this. So, I am was shooting the film and going back to my den while being Khilji all day. Not neutralizing it was taking a toll on me. Sometimes, off camera, I’d have evil thoughts and negative feelings towards people, and I had to stop and protect myself by neutralizing.”

Ranveer also said that he has come out of Khilji as a better human being. “You know, as much as it affected me emotionally and mentally, I have also come out feeling lighter. It is rare and overwhelming to see such great response to performances and the film. I am filled with gratitude, which leads to a desire to express and spread more affection and love. Whenever I get something from God, I feel like giving back,” he had said.

On the other hand, Shahid had said, ‘’There is a lot of drama between all the three characters. There is drama between Khilji and Ratan Singh and between him and Padmavati. That needed to work. Sanjay sir has offered me a good part. And those who have seen the film have understood why I did this role."

Our podcast episode will be conducted following the analysis of four movies:

1. But I’m a Cheerleader - Jamie Babbit (2000)

Megan (Natasha Lyonne) considers herself a typical American girl. She excels in school and cheerleading, and she has a handsome football-playing boyfriend, even though she isn't that crazy about him. So she's stunned when her parents decide she's gay and sends her to True Directions, a boot camp meant to alter her sexual orientation. While there, Megan meets a rebellious and unashamed teen lesbian, Graham (Clea DuVall). Though Megan still feels confused, she starts to have feelings for Graham.

We chose this movie because of the queer representation (not all of it good) and the very clear way they conflate gender roles with sexual orientation. We wanted to look at the beauty standards and norms everyone at the camp was expected to adopt in service of being ‘normal’ (aka straight).

2. Dumplin��- Anne Fletcher (2018)

The plus-size, teenage daughter of a former beauty queen signs up for her mum's pageant as a protest that escalates when other contestants follow in her footsteps, revolutionizing the pageant and their small Texas town.

This movie is a direct examination of fat-shaming and how we view fat people in our society. This fights back against the narrative that fat people are somehow ‘bad’. It is part of our course archive.

3. Padmaavat - Sanjay Leela Bhansali (2018)

In medieval India, a tyrannical sultan and his army attack a prosperous kingdom to try and capture the beautiful Queen Padmavati. Her husband Maharawal Ratan Singh assembles his valiant forces to defend his land and the honor of his beloved wife.

We picked this movie because it has a very clear representation of colorism in film. The good side all have light skin and more eurocentric features. The bad side are darer skinned and shown as dirty and savage. We felt it was a good representation of another common beauty trope.

4. Osama - Siddiq Barmak (2004)

The Taliban closes down a hospital, putting a mother (Zubaida Sahar) and daughter (Marina Golbahari) who work there out of a job. Legally prohibited from going out unaccompanied by men, and having none to rely on, they hatch a desperate plan to disguise the daughter as a boy answering to the name "Osama." The ruse works for a while, but when the Taliban begins conscripting boys for their training school, Osama fears it won't be long before she is discovered.

We picked this movie becasue it will let us examine and analyze how masculinity and a lack of femininity can be used as tools to move freely through society. It also allows us to examine beauty standards within extremely strict gender norms.

Bollywood’s Wave of History

With the upcoming release of Panipat, by Ashitosh Gowarikar, on 6th December 2019, it is important to see this wave of Period Films that has been going through Bollywood. The world of indian cinema has taken by storm with an obsession of historical films. With Taanaji and Shamshera in the pipeline, to be released in 2020, Filmi Files did it’s own research on this growing trend.

Jodha Akbar

Released in 2008, this Ashutosh Gowarikar classic of our times was a superhit and a rather controversial film. Starring Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan, the movie was released amidst a whirlpool of drama and controversy. After its release, the movie grossed 40cr and we think it is safe to say that it set a trend.

Veer

This Salman Khan starrer that introduced Zarine Khan to the world was another movie set in the past battles of our history, and began the upward graph of period films. It was released in 2010 and grossed 40cr as well.

From 2010 onwards, started a decade of back to back such films, and has reached 2020.

Bajirao Mastani

Another period film, this Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh starrer was made by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and released in 2015. It hit the box office hard and grossed 356 cr by the end of its time on the big screens.

Mohenjo Daro

This Hrithik Roshan starrer, was released in 2016 and was made by Ashutosh Gowarikar and grossed 108cr in the box office. As the name suggests, the movie was made on the rise and fall of the civilisation of Mohenjo Daro.

Padmaavat

Perhaps the queen of recent cinema controversy, Padmaavat was released in 2018 and the name of the movie had to be changed in order to assuage the offended crowds. Made by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the movie grossed 585Cr in box office. The movie starred Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor.

Manikarnika

Released in 2019, this Kangana Ranaut film was the one made on the woman-hero of our freedom struggle- Rani Laxmi Bai. The movie was produced by Zee studios and directed by Ranaut herself. It grossed 152Cr and became quite a hit.

This is a trend that is not going anytime soon, we think. Bollywood has created a nest in history and cosily rests there. While we appreciate the dose of history we have been getting on big screens, but we feel the scripts have turned repetitive, and the trend has come to a passe.

The people behind Chhapaak hosted a special screening of the film in Mumbai on the 8th of January. The premier was attended by a multitude of celebrities from veteran actress, Rekha to Javed Akhtar, Swara Bhaskar and many other prominent names. Deepika’s father, badminton champ, Prakash Padukone, her mother Ujjala and younger sister, professional golfer Anisha were also in attendance. Deepika arrived at the premiere in an exquisite royal blue Sabyasachi saree with her supportive hubby Ranveer Singh in tow. The so-in-love couple looked adorable as they posed for paparazzi pictures. After encouragement from the paparazzi, Deepika planted a cute kiss on Ranveer’s cheek, and Ranveer returned the gesture by planting one on her cheek as well.

Ranveer has always been an uber supportive partner to Deepika. He loves gushing about her in public, including leaving cheesy comments all over her Instagram pictures. In interviews, Deepika has revealed that she believes Ranveer isn’t just a humble actor but an ideal husband. She states that he is quite confident about himself to the point that he has no qualms if his wife overshadows him. In an interview with a prominent magazine, the actress revealed how she was grateful to Ranveer for being able to focus on work and not get distracted or have to worry about other issues. She claimed that in her previous relationships, she did not receive that freedom. In November 2019, the couple celebrated their first anniversary at Venkateshwara Temple in Tirupati and later at Amritsar Golden Temple. For their Tirupati visit, the duo sported Sabyasachi-designer ensembles. During a magazine interview, Deepika spoke candidly on what drew her to Ranveer when they met. She revealed, “When we started dating six years ago, I was more successful than him, busier than him, making more money. I’ve never come across a man who is so comfortable with my success and the attention I was getting. He was supportive and encouraging of my career, and it wasn’t superficial support. That doesn’t happen with many men. He really cared, and I don’t think our relationship would have lasted if not for how he inherently felt about my world and how much he respected it. I did not have to make compromises to keep my man happy, and that was the best thing about him.”

Things were totally different on Ranveer’s end, however, as he revealed he was starstruck by the stunning actress. The couple celebrated their nuptials on not two occasions, but three. The pair tied the knot on Italy’s picturesque Lake Como on November 14th and 15th. The receptions took place at The Leela Palace in Bengaluru and The Grand Hyatt, Mumbai on the 21st and 28th of November respectively. For their wedding reception in Bengaluru, Deepika wore a gorgeous saree that was gifted to her by her mother, and Ranveer wore a Rohit Bal designed ensemble.

The stunning Bollywood couple has starred in three box-office hits together. They were first paired as star-crossed lovers in Ram Leela (2013), then in Bajirao Mastani in 2015 and finally in Padmaavat (2018). They are also going to be starring with each other in the movie ‘83, which is set to be released in 2020. From The Cinematograph Act of 1918 to the present Central Bureau of Film Certification: The only visible mouthpiece of a moralistic society.

In 1895, for the first time a film was publicly screened. A nitrate fire at the Bazar de la Charité, Paris in 1897 killed 126, one caused due to the violently flammable nitrate films. Fast forward to 1909, after several similar cases of fires caused due to the films, world’s first Cinematograph legislation was passed in Britain. It was hoped that the legislation would ensure safety by curbing the issue of cinema licensing (without any expectations). Licenses were made mandatory for public screenings. Eventually, the authorities began to control not only the conditions in which the films would be screened but also the content of the screenings. The first full-length Indian feature, D.G. Phalke’s Raja Harishchandra, released in 1913. The Cinematograph Act was born in 1918 and with it film censorship in India. The 1918 Act gave the district magistrate or the commissioner of police the power to issue licences to exhibitors, and the government to appoint inspectors to examine and certify films as “suitable for public exhibition”. It wasn’t until 1920 that multiple Censor Boards were set up and rules were put into place to judge the appropriateness of films, both local and foreign, for release. “No generally and rigidly applicable rules of censorship can be laid down.” were the positive words that the general principles of the Bombay Board of Film Censors began with and then proceeded to lay out 43 objectionable subjects. Most of these objectionable subjects comprised of politically incorrect depictions from the perspective of the British authorities. The Indian cinematograph committee (ICC) of 1927-28, chaired by a former Madras high court judge, T. Rangachariar, was the first comprehensive inquiry into movie viewing, censoring and exhibiting habits in the country, and an acknowledgment by the British of cinema’s increasing popularity in India. It made several pragmatic suggestions regarding censorship and the Indian cinema but in vain like most of the painstakingly written reports that have followed since. Despite the earlier mentioned long list of objectionable subjects, Indian cinema wasn’t exactly prurient in the 1920s and 1930s. Hamarun Hindustan (1930) had an intimate scene with Sulochana and Jal Merchant. Film-maker J.B.H. Wadia recalled, years after the fact, Lalita Pawar kissing her co-star “without inhibition” in a film, and Jal Merchant and Zubeida “kissing each other quite often” in 1932’s Zarina (depending on which account you read, Zarina had a total of 34, 48 or 82 kisses). Actors kiss in the Franz Osten-directed Shiraz (1928) and A Throw Of Dice (1929). And there’s the famous kiss in Karma (1933), which has gone down in legend as being 4 minutes long, though it lasts only a minute and involves a snake and a tearful Devika Rani trying to bring a comatose Himanshu Rai to life. (July 14 2018, Livemint) Suresh Chabria writes in Light Of Asia: Indian Silent Cinema, 1912-1934, “Even mentioning British excesses, the Indian National Congress, self-governance, or even revolution in other countries was enough to earn your film a cut or a ban.” “It’s a strange phenomenon which we find in this country to see the Government-sponsored Indian News Parade claiming to give all the news to the Indian people while the Censors black-out the Nation’s beloved leaders who make the most news,” cine-journal Filmindia complained in 1945, noting that even framed photographs of national leaders were cut from films. Through the Film Inquiry Committee report submitted to the government in 1951, we get a picture of what censorship was like in the years leading up to, and just after, independence. Things were, to put it mildly, chaotic. The five censor boards examined films separately, and each had their own set of rules and local pressures. Often, a title passed by one would be rejected by another. In addition, the government—of India, or of a particular state—might deny a certificate to a film passed by the censors, a fate which could befall a noir or a war film as easily as it could a propaganda newsreel. In the same decade, it was made evident that film censorship in free India would depend not only on official sanction but on societal approval. It was then that the kiss disappeared from Indian cinema—a curtailment so long and stifling that it hasn’t fully returned yet. In film critic and historian B.D. Garga’s words, “Kissing disappeared from the Indian screen not because of a fiat of the censor but because of pressures brought on by social and religious groups.” Over the next few years, a Central Board of Film Censors (CBFC, renamed as Central Board of Film Certification in 1983) was set up, regional boards were abolished, and U and A were adopted as certification categories. “The Act of 1918 was repealed, but it was later replaced with a law not dissimilar in scope,” Arpan Banerjee notes in his essay Political Censorship And Indian Cinematographic Laws: A Functionalist-liberal Analysis. This was the Cinematograph Act of 1952, the cornerstone—and, in many ways, the millstone—of film censorship in India. The 1952 Cinematograph Act sets out the structure of censorship as it stands today: the chairperson at the top, then the board members, then the advisory panels (members of the initial examining committee and the revising committee, which do much of the actual examination of films, are drawn from these). Everyone, from the chairperson down to the advisory panel members, is a government appointee. And every government at the Centre has taken advantage of this, staffing the CBFC with party loyalists eager to make cuts and deny certificates to films critical of the establishment. The Emergency saw the most blatant use of this power, with Gulzar’s Aandhi (1975) and Amrit Nahata’s Kissa Kursi Ka (1977) banned, and Shyam Benegal’s Nishant (1975) stuck in a bureaucratic tangle, because they were perceived as critical of the Congress government. (July 14 2018, Livemint) What makes the Cinematograph Act such a problematic piece of legislation is the Section 5B of the Act, which states that any film that is against the “interests of [the sovereignty and integrity of India] the security of the State, friendly relations with foreign States, public order, decency or morality, or involves defamation or contempt of court or is likely to incite the commission of any offence” can be denied a certificate. Censors are tasked with ensuring that films provide “clean and healthy entertainment”; do not “deprave the morality of the audience”, endanger public order or “depict the modus operandi of criminals”, and so on. All these rules are not only vague but also convenient since no film can be released without a certificate from the CBFC, a government appointed body. In 1968, Abbas—already well-known as the screenwriter of Awara and Shree 420—made a 16-minute documentary, Char Shahar Ek Kahani, which had scenes showing prostitution in Mumbai. The CBFC’s examining committee handed the film an “A” certificate; after Abbas protested, the revising committee reached the same conclusion. After a fruitless appeal to the Central government, Abbas petitioned the Supreme Court, arguing that pre-censorship was antithetical to freedom of speech and expression. The court ruled against Abbas. “The censorship imposed on the making and exhibition of films is in the interests of society,” said the judgement, though it also asked Parliament and the government to do more to separate the objectionable from the socially valuable. Though Abbas’ suit was probably doomed from the start, it did have one useful fallout: the formation, in 1981, of the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT), a quasi-judicial body headed by a retired high court judge, which one could approach if unhappy with the decision of the CBFC’s examining and revising committees. (July 14 2018, Livemint) There have only been some minor developments in the years since—films must now carry no-smoking advisories, and (thankfully) it’s almost impossible to shoot a scene with a live animal. In addition to the ever-arbitrary demands of the board—a blurred brassiere here, a bleeped “virgin” there—censorship by mob has emerged as a disturbing issue. Starting with Bal Thackeray demanding his own cuts in Mani Ratnam’s Bombay in 1995, the Shiv Sena’s protests against Deepa Mehta’s Fire in 1998, religious organizations and fanatics demanding cuts in movies like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Padmaavat in the present times to delaying releases if the demands aren’t met, censorship by mob has been normalised. Though everyone in the industry is affected by it, they refuse to unite and speak against it. “Bollywood does not care,” director Dibakar Banerjee says, “because it knows it will somehow navigate through the bureaucratic red tape to survive. It’s a vestige of the licence raj.” In an interview to The Hindu in January 2002, Vijay Anand, director of Guide and Jewel Thief and the CBFC chief at the time, was asked whether the media was right to pick on the board’s decisions. “Why not?”, he replied “We are the visible mouthpiece of a moralistic society.” This is an uncomfortably honest self-assessment, but there’s some truth to the idea that the board isn’t entirely to blame. Film censorship in India can only be fixed if the rules governing it are overhauled and if there’s a change in attitude that has persisted since the days of the British: the tendency to treat the viewer as incapable. Movie-watchers should finally be allowed to decide for themselves whether a particular film will offend their sensibilities or not.

However, Deepika and Ranveer had to go through some tough times during the movie release. Well, they supported each other during hard times and eventually they came out as a winner.

2018 has been a rather eventful year for Bollywood so far. One thing that we learnt in this year is that Indian audiences are looking for good content in movies. Gone are the days when having an A-list star in your film was good enough to attract people in numbers. Times have changed and Bollywood is adapting to the change as well. Movies like Raazi and PadMan might not have performed at the box office the same way had they released a few years back. So, with first half of 2018 gone by, we list some of Bollywood’s best offerings so far.

Padmaavat Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali Release Date: 25 January, 2018

Padmaavat was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The film is loosely based on the poem Padmaavat which was written by Malik Muhammad Jayasi. The movie stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in leading roles. Aditi Rao Hydari, Jim Sarbh, Raza Murad, and Anupriya Goenka featured in supporting roles. With a budget of approximately INR 190 crore, Padmaavat is regarded as one of the most expensive films to be made in India. Initially, Padmaavat was scheduled for a release on 1 December 2017. However, due to Karni Sena protests the release got delayed and the makers had to face an uphill battle for its release. The Karni Sena requested the government for a nation-wide ban on the film and even went far as putting a bounty on Deepika Padukone. Eventually, when the film did release there was no stopping it from setting the box-office on fire. Padmaavat was a story about Rani Padmavati, who felt sacrificing her life was better than surrendering to the enemy. In the movie, Sultan Allauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh) tries everything he can to get Rani Padmavati who was married to Maharawal Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor) at the time. Khilji was an extremely powerful ruler who would stop at nothing to get what he wanted. Bhansali made use of technology to recreate the era. Real-life sets were used as well and the result was a never-seen-before opulence. The film made clever use of IMAX technology and 3D, which gave it depth and added to its grandness. Ranveer’s portrayal of Allauddin Khilji was something Bollywood had never witnessed before. The character of Khilji was so dark and intense that even playing the character on screen took a toll on Ranveer Singh. When asked about the same Ranveer said.”It was a huge risk. I was very apprehensive about taking the risk but Bhansali was very persistent in his pursuit of me and he is the one who convinced me that I would be able to pull it off. I went with his conviction. I can never say no to Bhansali, given the amount he has contributed to my career and to me as an artiste.”

Padmaavat broke many box-office records and made it to the 300 crepe club too.

Pad Man Release Date: 9 February, 2018 Director: R Balki

Through PadMan, Akshay was trying to convey the story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, who invented a low-cost sanitary pad making machine and helped spread awareness about menstrual hygiene in rural India. Akshay Kumar’s main purpose in doing the movie is to break the taboo around this biological fact, more so in the rural areas of India. The makers of Pad Man made it with a vision of spreading awareness not the commercial aspect. In India, it is not a surprise that movies are watched by everyone and everywhere. So, Akshay tried to utilise this median to give out the message he wanted. Apart from this, the makers felt that this will even give an impetus to politicians to take matters like these more seriously. Akshay also stated in an interview with a leading daily, that his biggest victory of Pad Man was the fact that people are able to talk about sanitary pads openly. The film release date was scheduled for 13 April 2018, however it was later changed to 26 January 2018. But, on 19 January it was announced that Pad Man has postponed its release to 9 February 2018 to avoid a clash with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat. The main reason for the delay in the release of Pad Man was known when Akshay Kumar revealed that Sanjay Leela Bhansali had requested him to postpone the release of his film in order to avoid a clash. In an interaction with the media, AKshay Kumar said, “He (Sanjay Leela Bhansali) has gone through a lot. It is essential for them to release the film at this time, their stakes are higher than mine,”. The film received an amazing response from the audience and went on to do business worth INR 120 crores globally.

Sonu Ki Titu Ki Sweety Release Date: 23 February, 2018 DIrector: Luv Ranjan

Sonu Ki Titu Ki Sweety was a comedy drama which was directed by Luv Ranjan. The movie starred Kartik Aaryan, Nushrat Barucha and Sunny Singh in leading roles. The combination of Kartik and Luv has already delivered hits like Pyaar Ka Punchnama and Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2. Although the movie received mixed reviews from the critics, it was a hit with the audience. The movie revolves around two friends, Sonu (Kartik Aaryan) and Titu (Sunny Singh). The two are shown to be the best of friends, but things change when Sweety (Nushrat Barucha) comes into their lives. Sonu is fed up with dating girls and believes that getting married will solve his problems of dealing with heartbreak. His family arranges a meeting for him with Sweety and they instantly hit off. Sweety is shown to be the “perfect bride”. But, Sonu finds this too good to be true and starts getting doubts about her. Eventually, Sonu finds out from Sweety herself that she is a schemer and plans to do the same with Titu. Despite several attempts of breaking the marriage, Sonu couldn’t succeed. At the night of the wedding, Sonu gives Titu an ultimatum saying that “It is either her or me.” Titu valued his friendship more than anything else in the world so he sacrificed his love for Sonu as well. Eventually, he finds out that Sonu was not just speculating but there was actual truth in what he was saying. Sonu Ki Titu Ki Sweety became the sleeper hit of the year. The collaboration of Luv Ranjan and Kartik Aaryan has already worked wonders at the box office with the Pyar Ka Punchnama series but with Sonu Ki Titu Ki Sweety the took it a notch higher.

Raid Release Date: 16 March 2018 Director : Raj Kumar Gupta

Raid was a crime thriller directed by Rajkumar Gupta and written by Ritesh Shah. The movie featured Ajay Devgn, Illeana D’cruz and Saurabh Shukla. The film was inspired by real life IT raids that were conducted by officers of the Indian Revenue Service during the 1980s. The film was a story about IRS Officer Amey Patnaik (Ajay Devgn), who is the Deputy Commissioner of the Income Tax Department. He once receives an anonymous tip about black money being hoarded by MLA Rameshwar Singh. The movie is about Amey’s chase of the cash, while ensuring his officers and his family are safe. Ajay Devgn’s performance in the film received a lot of praise from the critics and the audience. Ajay played his character of the IRS officer with dedication which made it look very authentic. Saurabh Shukla’s performance as Rameshwar Singh too won hearts of many people. His quirky lines mad his character the most interesting part of the film. The film entered the 100 Crowe club too.

Raazi Date: 11 May 2018 Director : Meghna Gulzar

Alia Bhatt has perhaps mastered the art of balancing commercial cinema with socially relevant cinema. In fact, she started her career in this way as well. After making her debut with Student of The Year, which was a commercial film, she went ahead and did a film like Highway. We have seen her in films like 2 States and Badrinath Ki Dulhania but to offset these commercial entertainers she also is seen in films like Udta Punjab and Dear Zindagi. Alia Bhatt’s last release Raazi was a film based on the book Calling Sehmat by Harinder Sikka. A novel which was inspired by the almost-unbelievable real-life story of the woman who Sikka named Sehmat, to protect her identity. Harinder Sikka had gone to cover the Kargil war and write about the many intelligence failures of the Indian army. However, during his stint there, an army officer pointed out that there had been people who were risking everything to provide the army with top secret information. Turns out, Sehmat was that army officer’s mother, a Kashmiri Muslim, who married a Pakistani officer to spy and provide classified information to Indian intelligence during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Harinder was so fascinated by the courage and patriotism of this woman that he tracked her down. He met her in Malerkotla in Punab, where she was living at the time and got her to open up about her life’s story. Credit must go to the director Meghna Gulzar for the way she portrayed Sehmat’s story. Raazi as a film didn’t take any sides. It didn’t portray Pakistan in a bad light nor India in a good one. It showed that humanity and ruthlessness exist on both sides. This is a significant departure from the patriotic films of yesteryear – we are habituated to seeing a good vs evil theme, and having Pakistanis depicted as soulless warmongers. However, it did give us a good glimpse of how many people are sacrificing their lives for our country, something for which they don’t ever get credit for. You’ll feel proud of such unsung heroes of your country after this one! Raazi also went on to be Alia Bhatt’s biggest hit as the litfitime collections of the film amounted to Rs 123.47 crores approx.

Parmanu Release Date : 25 May 2018 Director : Abhishek Sharma

Parmanu was a recreation of the events that occurred back in 1998 when India tricked the American intelligence while carrying out the successful nuclear testing in Pokhran. John’s character Ashwath is the architect of the plan. He initially formulated the plan in 1995 but was refused when he wanted to bring it in action by his superiors. The government approach him three years later in 1998 and how he executes it with the help of his chosen team forms the crux of the film. That very event changed the world’s perspective towards our nation and it was indeed a proud moment for us all. Parmanu is a tightly scripted film which will give you ample of thrills and drama to keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the film. There are no commercial compromises, and the director has mixed all the elements perfectly to give you a touching patriotic story which proves that unsung heroes can be remembered and honoured on any day. A special mention must go to John Abraham who risked producing a movie on a topic which many would consider tricly. Apart from being a courageous producer of this film, he carried it well on his shoulders as the main lead. He was ably supported by talented actors like Boman Irani, Vikas Kumar and Yogendra Tiku. Diana Penty and Anuja Sathe did justice to their limited characters. The film managed to collect a total of Rs. 65.36 crore during its run at the box office.

Veere Di Wedding Release Date: 1 June 2018 Director: Shashanka Gosh

Veere Di Wedding starred Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania in leading roles. The movie is designed to push the idea that girls too have fun just like boys. And the performance by the four leads in the film sure do make you believe that. With Veere Di Wedding, Kareena Kapoor Khan made her return to Bollywood after almost two years with her last release being Ki and Ka in 2016 in which she was seen opposite Arjun Kapoor. Kareena plays the role of Kalindi Puri, a commitment phobic girl who is enjoying her relationship with Rishabh Malhotra (Sumeet Vyas) until he proposes. Despite hesitating earlier, Kalindi decides to take the plunge. What follows is a series of hilarious situations that we see in a typical Punjabi wedding. Director Shashanka Gosh ticks all the boxes and does a great job in developing great chemistry amongst the leading ladies which form the crux of the film. The film strongly gives out the message that each one of comes with their own set of flaws and that is okay to not be perfect. The film was more of a wake up call for the society to come on term with today’s times. Girls do drink, smoke and swear and that it is absolutely fine if they do so. Sonam spoke about the same in an interview with a leading daily. She said, “I don’t think this question would be posed to men that you are drinking, smoking and abusing or sexually active, does this make you less of a man? Just because people saw four girls who are in a certain urban setting being realistic to what young urban working women, what their lifestyle is… a lot of us who come from this background, we do curse, we do drink.. And we are sexually active. We are not sitting waiting till we get married. Just because we are showing that on screen why is that becoming an issue? When we allow our male characters to be as close to reality as possible, why can’t we let our women have that?” Veere Di Wedding proved that a film with female characters as leads too can mint money at the box office as the film went on to earn a total of INR 81.13 crores.

Sanju Director : Rajkumar Hirani Release Date : 29 June 2018

We have been watching him on the big screen since decades now, so watching Sanjay Dutt’s chequered story unfold on screen has naturally got all of us excited and how. Ranbir Kapoor has undergone an amazing body transformation which makes him look and feel like Sanjay Dutt. It’s just not the looks, Ranbir has also managed to imbibe all the mannerisms of Sanjay Dutt. The little things like the tone of his voice and his body language are replicated extremely well by Ranbir on-screen.

The film has a host of other talented actors like Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Manisha Koirala, Dia Mirza, Paresh Rawal, Vicky Kaushal and Jim Sarbh in the sway as well. The performances by Paresh Rawal and Vicky Kaushal too have received a lot of praise along with Ranbir, since they are playing key characters in the movie as well.

It seems like director Rajkumar Hirani has cracked the formula of what works at the box office and his track record more than justifies that. Sanju has already broken several record’s in a very short time at the box office. The film got the biggest opening for a Bollywood movie in 2018, a title which was held by Salman Khan’s Race 3. The collections of Sanju on 1st July 2018 were the highest for any Hindi film until now. Sanju (INR 46.71 crores) beat the record set by Baahubali 2 (Hindi) (INR 46.50 crores). It has not even been a week since the release of Sanju and the collections already are inching towards the INR 150 crore mark as on the fourth day they stand at INR 145.41 crores.

Box Office collection: Padmavat, Padman, Raid and Hichki's first quarter of 2018

The first quarter of 2018 has passed; the Bollywood film industry has given a solid foundation. Some of the films released and have done a very good business at the box office and have kept the flame of hope in the heart of the filmmakers that the good days will definitely come this year.
