A Tale of Two Teachers
A few years ago, I watched a movie called Hichki, it is a Hindi film which revolves around a teacher navigating her life with Tourette’s syndrome. It is one of those few movies which doesn’t just entertain you but teaches you something as well. The movie was great, amazing acting by some of the best actors, a great story and catchy songs. Doesn’t matter how many times I watch it; it never fails to entertain me.
However, a few days ago, while mindlessly scrolling through Instagram I came across a reel; a teacher suffering from Tourette’s explaining what Tourette’s is to students.
This wasn’t a scene from Hichki although it looked quite similar to it, just a few minute differences here and there.
Being a bit curious, I looked up the movie on google and got to know that this movie is called ‘Front of the Class’ which released in 2008, ten years before Hichki did. It stars James Wolk and is a fun 1 hour 35 minutes watch.
This movie is an adaptation of a book of the same name, although I’m not really sure whether Hichki is an adaptation of the book or the movie. While the plots are similar, there are notable differences adapted to each country and their respective timelines.
To summarize ‘Front of the Class’ (without giving any spoilers), Brady Cohen is a man suffering from Tourette’s who manages his Tourette’s while teaching.
Another fun fact I got to know about the movie is that Brady Cohen is actually a real person and a teacher who suffers from Tourette’s.
This was about the movie, in general and the outline of both the movies.
Now, I would like state my personal opinion of both the movies;
As I’ve mentioned earlier I love Hichki, but if I had to chose between both the films I would go for Front of the Class.
A few things I loved about this movie is that here, Brady was narrating his story, his character was so optimistic and happy but also felt frustration and anger which made him feel very relatable, he wasn’t just a teacher but his life beyond the school was also explored.
This movie wasn’t about Tourette’s awareness like Hichki, it was about Brady- a person suffering from Tourette’s who wants to be a teacher.
I saw who Brady was as a person which I didn’t really see in Naina (Hichki).
I felt Hichki focused more on the ‘Naina is a ‘teacher with Tourette’s’ rather than ‘Naina is a person with Tourette’s who is a teacher’. It felt like she didn’t have a life outside of the school and teaching.
Another reason why I would choose Front of the class over Hichki is that Hichki was supported with a background score. I believe that music is very powerful and when used in the correct way can elevate any situation. Hichki did a wonderful job using its background score amazingly and making us feel proud of Naina. But Front of the Class made me feel the exact same thing (maybe even better) without the music.
Overall, both the films are amazing. And if watched individually without any comparison neither of them disappoints.

Başarılı bir kadın oyuncu olduğunu dile getirmek istiyorum öncelikle. Bugünkü tavsiye film olarak Hichki (Hıçkırık) film konusu ile karşınızdayım.

‘As a fellow desi there are multiple plots from our movies that could work well as choices books. Like master or hichki, even something like dirty picture or mardangi, kahaani, manchitrathazhu. even something with the basic premise of a movie like vikram. I have no idea how choices is still making such mid books despite media around them in the west is doing great. they could try something similar to a24, hell, even euphoria or the idol. but thinking more about it, I need something like the dirty picture as a choices book!’

Vo gaata tha ghazal khaas, mere liye,
Aur jeeta tha harek lafz,
Unn panno mei ghuskar,
Mashoor shaayro k kitab se.
Zikr hi karna bhul gya mera,
Jiske panno mei jahmeel tha vo.
Ab unhe apni yaad kese dilau,
Jo hardin khayalo mei rahte hai.
Ki aashiq toh hai kai saare,
Jaam lagaakar hichki dila hi dete hai.
Lekin, taraste ye kyu nahi hai,
Jo sharaab k nasho se durr rehte hai.
Ab jo b likhu toh tumtak kese pohchau?
Ab toh mere inn shabdo ka bazaar lagta hai.
Sabke beech mei rakhkar,
Bas tumhe padane k liye.
Tum vahi ho na?
Jisne kabhi mujhe khuda maana tha,
Kya hua, ibadat chord di?
Jo sath beetake samay bhul jata tha,
Aaj ghadi se roobaru ho gye?
Jo mujhe mujhse zada jaanta tha,
Apna parichay dena hi bhul gaye?
Fir jao,
Jaane diya tumhe, azaad ho tum
Mere har sawaal se, shikayat se.
Mere aansu b tumhe haaye nai denge.
Mere lafz bhi ab tumpe kharch nai honge.
Ye fizool ki likhawat bhi,
Jo raato ko jagaye rakhti thi, ab neend paenge.
Rabb di hui mher milange,
Haaye ni apa fer milange.

Exploring the Themes in Raj Shekhar’s Lyrics: From Love to Social Issues
Introduction: The diversity in themes explored by Raj Shekhar.
Bollywood has always been a melting pot of talent, offering artists from diverse backgrounds a platform to shine. Among these luminaries, Raj Shekhar stands out as a lyricist who has carved a niche for himself with his evocative words and unique storytelling. His journey from being an assistant director to becoming one of Bollywood’s most sought-after lyricists is both inspiring and fascinating. This article delves into Raj Shekhar’s creative journey, exploring his early days, breakthrough moments, and the qualities that have set him apart in the highly competitive Indian film industry.
Early Life and Passion for Storytelling
Born and raised in Madhepura, Bihar, Raj Shekhar grew up surrounded by stories and folklore. His early exposure to the region’s rich cultural tapestry sparked his interest in storytelling. However, pursuing a career in Bollywood was not an obvious choice for someone from his background. Driven by an innate love for poetry and literature, he began writing at a young age, often drawing inspiration from his surroundings and personal experiences.
Shekhar’s academic pursuits brought him to Delhi, where he further explored his passion for writing. During his college days, he became actively involved in theater, which introduced him to the nuances of storytelling and character development. These formative years honed his skills and prepared him for the challenges of the entertainment industry.
Breaking into Bollywood: The Assistant Director Years
Before becoming a lyricist, Raj Shekhar started his career in Bollywood as an assistant director. He worked closely with filmmaker Aanand L. Rai, assisting in the making of films like Strangers (2007). This phase of his career provided him with invaluable insights into the filmmaking process, allowing him to understand the interplay between narrative, visuals, and music.
Despite his role behind the camera, Shekhar’s passion for writing remained strong. He continued to pen down his thoughts and poems, waiting for the right opportunity to showcase his talent. Little did he know that his big break was just around the corner.
The Breakthrough: Tanu Weds Manu
Raj Shekhar’s career took a pivotal turn when Aanand L. Rai entrusted him with writing the lyrics for Tanu Weds Manu (2011). The film’s narrative demanded lyrics that were deeply rooted in Indian culture while being relatable and modern. Shekhar rose to the challenge, crafting songs that resonated with audiences across the country. Tracks like “Jugni” and “Saddi Galli” became instant hits, marking the arrival of a fresh voice in Bollywood music.
What set Shekhar apart was his ability to infuse traditional poetic sensibilities into contemporary compositions. His lyrics captured the essence of the film’s characters and their emotions, elevating the storytelling experience. This successful debut established him as a lyricist to watch out for.
Key Collaborations and Milestones
Post-Tanu Weds Manu, Raj Shekhar continued his association with Aanand L. Rai, contributing to the sequel Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015). Songs like “Banno” and “Old School Girl” showcased his versatility, blending humor, romance, and nostalgia seamlessly. His collaborations extended beyond Rai, as he worked with other prominent filmmakers and composers.
In the fantasy-horror film Tumbbad (2018), Shekhar’s lyrics played a crucial role in creating the film’s hauntingly beautiful atmosphere. The song “Lalla Lalla Lori” stood out for its eerie yet poetic tone, adding depth to the narrative. Similarly, his work in films like Hichki and Uri: The Surgical Strike demonstrated his ability to adapt to diverse genres and themes.
Challenges and Triumphs
Like any artist, Raj Shekhar faced his share of challenges. Breaking into Bollywood as an outsider was no easy feat, and establishing himself in an industry dominated by seasoned lyricists required persistence and resilience. However, his dedication to his craft and willingness to experiment helped him overcome these obstacles.
Shekhar’s lyrics often stand out for their authenticity and emotional depth. Unlike many commercial lyricists, he avoids clichés, opting instead for words that feel genuine and heartfelt. This commitment to quality has earned him critical acclaim and a loyal fan base.
What Sets Raj Shekhar Apart
One of the defining features of Raj Shekhar’s writing is his ability to tell stories through his lyrics. Whether it’s a soulful ballad or a peppy dance number, his words always have a narrative quality that draws listeners in. His understanding of characters and their emotions stems from his background in theater and filmmaking, allowing him to craft lyrics that are both meaningful and engaging.
Moreover, Shekhar’s work reflects his love for traditional Indian poetry. He often incorporates metaphors, idioms, and imagery that evoke a sense of nostalgia, bridging the gap between the past and the present. This unique style has made him a favorite among filmmakers who seek depth and authenticity in their music.
Conclusion
Raj Shekhar journey from an assistant director to an acclaimed lyricist is a testament to the power of perseverance and passion. His work not only entertains but also enriches the cinematic experience, leaving a lasting impression on audiences. As he continues to explore new horizons and collaborate with diverse artists, Raj Shekhar remains a shining example of creativity and innovation in Bollywood.
