We’ve done it before, there’s no reason we can’t do it again.” It felt like he was begging as he said it, pleading for his words to be true. He wanted them to be true. Max took a look over his shoulder, looking at the crowd. A few attendees were casting lingering glances at them, and he began walking slowly in the other direction, hoping she’d understand and carry on walking beside him. 

“This is a desperate scramble to regain power and take revenge against some wayward assassins, nothing else.” It was certainly a simplification of events, but in the moment, it was the least of his concerns. “We need to remain upright. Show we can keep our heads as the world seems to crumble around us.” They’d walked further down the hall now, away from prying ears, and he stopped, turning to her. “You more than anyone. If there’s anyone in this world who cannot afford to show weakness, it is you.” His tone was soft and understanding, but still forceful. It was something he felt strongly about. “Everyone, from our enemies to our allies, will look to you and judge how well our true leader weathers these storms.” 

The more that was revealed, the more she feared. Names associated with her, or with her allies. Memories of what she had lost through this whole thing. Intrusive thoughts at the back of her mind - what if you are to blame? How dangerous had her words been? Through all those passionate speeches had she ever actually stopped to ask what their impact will be.

"It will only build, people will get caught up in the frenzy, and I suspect they will keep the best till last. End with an impact to ensure we all remember how terrible it all was." She raised a hand to her forehead, light pressure to try and ease the headache emerging. "It is always the way. Those in power write our stories, decide who is the hero, and who the villain. If they weave a strong enough story from this, perhaps they can turn the tide against us once more..."

Movies watched in 2024

Woman of the Hour (2023, USA)

Mini-review:

This is a surprisingly hard-hitting movie. It uses the bizarre real life story of a serial killer to put on display the different aggresions (both macro and micro) that women face on the daily, and the way many things have barely changed over the last 50 years. While I already knew Anna Kendrick was a great actress, here she also proves herself as a talented director on her first try. I can see some people being unhappy with the way she handles the most violent moments, but I think it was the right choice for this particular story and message. Beyond that, Daniel Zovatto's performance is genuinely unsettling and terrifying, which makes the whole thing work even better. So yeah, Woman of the Hour is not an easy film, but it's pretty powerful. I'll be looking forward to Anna Kendrick's future directorial works.

It had been so long since Maximilien had a full, decent night of sleep, so when he heard the sweet melody of a familiar song, he had to stop for a moment to make sure he was not dreaming. He followed the sound to the galleries, and was shocked to find the people in the room were completely ignoring the singer in the corner. Spellbound by the song, Max felt as though he was frozen to his spot in the doorway as he was transported back to his childhood. Closing his eyes, he suddenly a young boy again, listening to his sister-in-law sing as she cooked or rocked one of the children to sleep. It had been years since he heard the song, but the lyrics were still etched onto the front of his brain. As the song drew to an end he approached the singer, aiming to compliment the performance, but his brow furrowed. The closer he got to her, the more familiar her face became. “You sing in French like a native speaker, though I know you did not travel with us to Lal Qila. I am certain we have met before, but I am entirely at a loss for where we would have met.” He clasped his hands behind his back and lowered his head for a moment, suddenly aware of the possibility that they were perfect strangers, and that he was being far too forward. “Forgive me if I am mistaken.”

Perhaps it was the unwise thing to do, singing a French folk song in the music hall whilst guests entered in and out to observe the melody alongside the art, most notably the portraits of those poor royals whom had lost their lives. But the only songs she knew in Hindi were the most joyful tunes, quite unsuitable for such an occassion. All of the sad songs closest to her heart were in French, and so she sang in her native tongue, echoes filling up to each corner of the room. They were so used to being ignored, when she sang in anything other than Hindi and English, that they half-expected this to be same case here. But with so many Frenchman around, she was bound to be recognized.

Camp Camp Headcanons 1: Last names

Ok, as many of us have realized, many characters, like the main ones, for the most part, their last names were never revealed, we only have the last names of Dolph, Ered, Nurf, Preston, the Wood Scouts, Miss Priss, (which is his last name), and the founder of Camp Campbell, which is why I have taken on the task of giving each of the missing campers and incidentally also the Flower Scouts, a last name, mind you, they are not canon, it just seemed to me It was fun to do it, I also gave them these last names because they seemed curious or cool to me, anyway, here we go.

The concert benefitted UCLA Children's Hospital with performances by the most celebrated performers of the singer-songwriter era - Carole King, Jimmy Buffett, Joe Walsh, Dan Fogelberg, Jackson Browne, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Bonnie Raitt, Little Feat, and more.

Max donated his painting of this beautiful heart image at the concert. This commemorative poster captures the euphoric color, fullness of form and detailed brushwork of Max's heart painting for the event. It's a joyous work of love and tribute.

Film editing: Sally Menke.  Sometimes called "the Tarantino movie for people who don't like Tarantino movies," Jackie Brown feels a bit like Tarantino under the influence of Martin Scorsese. That's not just because of the presence of Robert De Niro in the cast, but also because it's the Tarantino film that feels most under control, with its long takes and following shots. It's also the first Tarantino movie adapted from other material, in this case the novel Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard, which imposes a certain rhythm on the material, unlike Tarantino's usual jazzy riffs and variations. On the other hand, any time that Samuel L. Jackson (who is to Tarantino what De Niro used to be to Scorsese) is on screen, you can feel the obvious synergy between director and star. The real star, however, is Pam Grier, whose Jackie Brown is a force of nature, proud and statuesque, like Sophia Loren or Anna Magnani in their prime. Delivering her lines out of the side of her mouth, she's clearly in control even when things seem to be going against her. She's well-matched with Robert Forster's wearily implacable Max Cherry, a bail bondsman who can't help getting too involved with his clients. It's clear from the outset that Jackie and Max have what it takes to triumph just by sheer persistence over Jackson's flamboyant Ordell Robbie, not to mention his somewhat too stoned accomplices, Louis (De Niro) and Melanie (Bridget Fonda), and the wiseass ATF agent Ray Nicolette (Michael Keaton). The pleasure of the film consists largely in watching this gallery of top-notch actors go through the paces of the plot.
