Choosing a creamer that does not contain potassium or phosphorus additives can help reduce your daily potassium and phosphorus intake. If you do like the creamers that contain these additives, try to limit the amount used. One powdered creamer packet, or suggested liquid single serving is not high in potassium or phosphorus, but adding multiple servings in a cup of coffee can add up.
When possible, choose the additive-free creamer. For example, if you love pumpkin spice flavoring in your homemade coffee, choose the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Flavored Creamer over the Coffee Mate Pumpkin Spice Creamer.
Types of Milk
If you like lattes or use milk instead of creamer, the type of milk you choose can add to the potassium and phosphorus in coffee. Dairy milk contains the greatest amount of potassium and phosphorus. Low-phosphorus milk alternatives include rice, soy, coconut and almond milk. Potassium content varies. It is important to read the labels as some products may contain additives. Milk alternatives labeled as “enriched” usually contain phosphorus additives and should be avoided.

4 Reasons To Stop Eating Carrageenan (Plus How To Avoid)
Carrageenan is a common food additive that often pops up in natural foods since it’s derived from seaweed. But that’s where the naturalness ends. In fact, there are concerns about the potential for negative health effects of carrageenan not only from those advocating a Paleo approach to health, but also from the scientific community as well.
What is Carrageenan?
Commonly known as Irish Moss, carrageenan is derived from a species of edible seaweed that grows in the Atlantic along the rocky coasts of Europe and North America. Carrageenan has been harvested by Europeans and used in foods for centuries as a gelling agent and as a home remedy for coughs and colds.
Carrageenan is a soluble dietary fiber that has no calories. In today’s world of modern food processing, carrageenan is used in products to thicken, emulsify, stabilize, and provide uniformity. It is also used in dog food and personal products such as toothpaste.
Problems With Carrageenan
A worldwide trend in the rise of IBD seems to be consistent with the rise in the consumption of processed foods that contain gelling agents, including carrageenan. (2,3) Carrageenan has been shown to have detrimental effects in both animal experiments and human intestinal cell studies, which brings up the question: why are we still eating it? (4,5) Even anecdotal evidence has shown that removing carrageenan from the diet can help resolve gastrointestinal issues associated with inflammation.
Although far from definitive, research links dietary carrageenan to symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as gut inflammation, cell necrosis and ulcers, as well as to possible roles in cancer growth and insulin resistance. (6,7)
Carrageenan has been controversial for decades. Originally granted GRAS status (Generally Recognized As Safe), the safety of this food additive was reconsidered by the FDA in 1972 and again in 2012. Neither instance resulted in changes to the GRAS status. In 2007, The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives recommended that carrageenan be excluded from infant formula. Although it remains in formula in the United States, carrageenan is banned for use in infant formula in Europe. (8)
The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) voted in 2016 to remove it from the list of approved ingredients in organic products and although the USDA isn’t set to rule on this until the fall of 2018, many organic food producers have reorganized their products to be carrageenan-free.
Clearly, carrageenan is a problematic food additive. If babies shouldn’t consume it, the NOSB doesn’t think it should be used in organic products, and the scientific community is at odds over its safety, should we be consuming it at all?
4 Reasons You Should Avoid Carrageenan
While carrageenan can have an impact on numerous health conditions, there are four ways that it can specifically impact the body in a negative way.
1. Inflammation
It may be hard to believe, but the the intestinal mucosa—the wall separating your gut from the rest of your body—is only one cell thick! It’s not surprising then that a protective layer of mucus covers the cells, and specialized proteins form “tight junctions” between them, serving as barriers for a strong intestinal surface. When the mucosal layer is healthy and the tight junctions are working properly, proper digestion and absorption can occur.
The integrity of the intestinal mucosa is susceptible to lifestyle and dietary factors. (9) When we live and eat in ways that are not favorable to our genetics, as is the norm in our chronically stressed out lifestyles, there is mucosal and tight junction breakdown. As a result, gut contents start leaking into the body, a process that is referred to as leaky gut. (10)
In leaky gut, particles end up in your circulation that shouldn’t be there. These can include partially digested foods, toxins, pathogenic yeasts, fungi, parasites, bacteria, and viruses that put the the immune system into a state of chronic activation, leading to an ongoing cycle of inflammation and tissue damage. The intestinal microbiome is altered in this process, which further contributes to inflammation. (11,12)
Although human testing isn’t done because it wouldn’t be ethical to make people sick, test tube studies have shown that carrageenan triggers inflammation in human intestinal cells. (13,14,15) Even if you have no pre-existing inflammatory issues, eating carrageenan could contribute to the development of leaky gut and similar malabsorption issues.
2. Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease includes a group of intestinal disorders that involve inflammation anywhere in the digestive tract including the
Mouth
Esophagus
Stomach
Small intestine
Large intestine
Rectum
The two primary types of IBD are ulcerative colitis (inflammation and sores in the large intestine and rectum) and Crohn’s disease (inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract that can result in ulcers, usually at the end of the small intestine).
Symptoms of IBD come and go, or occur with different levels of severity as the disease vacillates between flares and remission. They can include:
Diarrhea
Fever and fatigue
Abdominal pain and cramping
Blood in the stool
Reduced appetite
Unintended weight loss
Severe cases of IBD can lead to life threatening complications. In keeping with the theory of autoimmunity, three factors influence the development of IBD including: (16)
Genetic predisposition: a family history of IBD.
Leaky gut: increased intestinal permeability leading to stimulation of the immune system.
Environmental triggers that cause a leaky gut, such as diet.
It’s theorized that carrageenan may act as the sole environmental trigger, or work in concordance with other triggers, to produce inflammation and IBD in those who are genetically susceptible. Carrageenan may be a “conditional inflammatory agent” that provokes a worsening of existing inflammation from leaky gut. (17)
Animal testing shows mixed results for carrageenan and the formation of intestinal ulcers. In one study, guinea pigs developed colonic ulcers after eating a diet relatively high in carrageenan compared to the typical Western diet. (18) In other studies, carrageenan did not cause ulcers in animals. (19)
In a test tube analysis using human epithelial cells, relatively low doses of carrageenan increased colonic cell death due to pathology. From these results, the authors concluded that the possibility exists for intestinal ulcers characteristic of IBD to form in humans in response to carrageenan exposure. (20)
While it’s far from definitive that carrageenan exposure causes intestinal ulcers, there’s a catch: although the amounts are reported to be low, poligeenan does show up in the food supply. (21) Poligeenan is a type of carrageenan that is not permitted for use in food, but that has been extensively studied.
Poligeenan is lower in molecular weight than carrageenan and is extremely toxic to gut mucosa, causing inflammation and intestinal damage resembling inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), as well as cancerous lesions in animals. Poligeenan is used in animal studies to induce intestinal inflammation for the testing of anti-inflammatory drugs. (1)
There are three ways that poligeenan, and not just carrageenan, can show up in foods.
Poligeenan can be formed from carrageenan during digestion via acid hydrolysis. (22,23)
Intestinal bacteria may degrade carrageenan into poligeenan. (24)
Foods may be contaminated with poligeenan. (25)
So while the jury may be out on a final verdict for carrageenan, the potential association with poligeenan alone should give much greater caution with this unnecessary food additive.
3. Cancer
While poligeenan has group 2B cancer classification—meaning that it is considered possibly carcinogenic to humans—carrageenan has GRAS status and is generally recognized as safe.
Although it is true that carrageenan has not been shown to cause cancer in animals, two studies have shown that it accelerates tumor growth in rats when applied with a carcinogen. (26,27)
Another study showed that when rats were fed diets that contained either wheat bran, guar gum, or carrageenan to test the effect of various fibers on an enzymatic marker for colon cancer, only carrageenan raised the activity of this enzyme compared to the control group. (28)
4. Glucose Intolerance
Glucose intolerance refers to higher than normal levels of blood glucose due to metabolic conditions such as insulin resistance. Carrageenan has been shown to cause glucose intolerance both in mice, and in a test tube study of human liver cells. (29,30)
Currently, there is a study being conducted at the University of Illinois at Chicago on the impact of a no-carrageenan diet on glucose tolerance in subjects with prediabetes. The study is active until the end of 2018. (31)
31 Common Foods That Contain Carrageenan
Carrageenan has strong capacity to bind with meat and milk proteins and it is often found in these types of processed foods, including those that are organic.
Many organic food producers have reformulated their products to be carrageenan-free, but you have to read labels to know for sure. Unfortunately, when carrageenan is used as a “processing aid,” as is often the case with cream, it will not be listed on the label. If you are really trying to avoid all traces of carrageenan, and you’re not sure if it has been used in the processing of a food you like, you’ll have to contact the company to find out.
The following are foods that may contain carrageenan:
Almond milk and other nut milks
Rice milk
Coconut milk
Soy milk
Chocolate and other flavored milks
Buttermilk
Eggnog
Coconut water
Ice cream
Cottage cheese
Yogurt including “squeezable yogurt”
Nondairy yogurt
Kefir
Sour cream
Cheese alternatives (vegan cheese)
Pudding

Heavy whipping cream

Desserts

Bottom line: The potential for carrageenan to spark inflammatory and disease-causing problems within the body is there, and at the least, this ingredient should warrant caution. Considering the volume of foods and products that it can appear in, a person might ingest a significant amount of carrageenan each day without even realizing it. Reading labels is an essential place to start.
How To Avoid Carrageenan
Ultimately, you will have to discover if carrageenan is causing problems for you. Choosing to eat within a Paleo framework naturally lowers your intake of this additive because processed foods are avoided.
However, you’ll still come across Paleo-friendly foods that contain carrageenan, even some that are organic. This shopping guide can be helpful for finding carrageenan-free organic foods.
If you suffer from unexplained symptoms of of gastric distress, even if it’s minor, you might try going the extra mile to be carrageenan-free for awhile and see how you feel.

NEWLY REVISED, EASIER, CHEAPER CRUELTY-FREE, PALM OIL-FREE VEGAN BUTTER-Y SPREAD
BRYANNA'S NEW, EASY PALM OIL-FREE VEGAN BUTTER-Y SPREAD Revised May 10, 2019 (Soy & Non-Soy versions; made with liquid oil and a small amount of either cocoa butter or coconut oil) © Bryanna Clark Grogan 2019. All rights reserved.
Yield: 1 1/2 cups
This is an inexpensive, delicious and easy-to-make butter-y spread to use on bread, toast, muffins, etc., in sauces on and cooked vegetables. It may not be firm enough to use in place of butter or solid margarine in some baking-- though it often works if used in a frozen state. Frozen, both are firm and can be scraped with a knife to use on toast, etc..
NON-SOY VARIATION:
Instead of soymilk, use Silk or So Delicious Coconut Creamer (Original), which are both cruelty-free, or you can use a creamy sort of plant-based milk that has a pleasant taste. (Rice milk is too thin). NOTE: Silk and So Delicious brands use cruelty-free coconut products.
**NOTE: May 10, 2019 This is an amalgamated, revised and updated version of my two previous posts on making this easy and delicious homemade vegan Butter-y Spread.
#1.) Ingredient List for Cocoa Butter Version: 1/2 cup soy milk (I used Silk Organic Original-- have not tried it with homemade soy milk yet) (see recipe intro for non-soy version)
1/2 Tbs liquid soy or sunflower lecithin
1/2 tsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp fine sea salt
3/4 tsp guar gum or xanthan gum
3/4 cup neutral tasting oil
1 1/2 oz.(44g) steam-deodorized organic cocoa butter, melted to make 1/4 cup (See note on cocoa butter above photo) #2) Ingredient List for the Coconut Oil Version, use: 1/2 cup soy milk (I used Silk Organic Original-- have not tried it with homemade soy milk yet) (see recipe intro for non-soy version)
1/2 Tbs liquid soy or sunflower lecithin
1/2 tsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp fine sea salt
3/4 tsp guar gum or xanthan gum
1/2 cup neutral tasting oil
1/2 cup cruelty-free refined coconut oil, melted (See approved cruelty-free brands here.)
Important Note: I melt the cocoa butter or coconut oil in a small cream pitcher in the microwave for a minute at medium power. If you prefer, place the pitcher in a small saucepan with hot water and heat over medium heat until it melts. Either way, remove carefully using a potholder. You can add the neutral oil to this and use the little pitcher to pour the mixed oils into the blended mixture with more control and no spilling.
Instructions:
Pour the milk and the lecithin into a high-speed blender container, add the lemon juice, salt and xanthan or guar gum, and place the cover on it, with the central cap off. Mix the liquid oil with the melted cocoa butter or coconut oil together in a small pitcher (like a cream pitcher)-- see Important Note at end of Ingredient List. Turn the blender on to Low speed and pour a thin stream of a mixture of the two oils slowly into the milk until all of it is used up. (When I say “slowly”, that’s what I mean-- a slow steady stream, but NOT drop by drop.)
Increase the speed of the blender to High. Blend for a short time, just until it thickens to the consistency of a very thick mayonnaise.
Use a small silicone spatula to scoop the mixture into one or two shallow glass refrigerator containers with lids, or a larger butter dish with a lid. Scrape as much of the blended mixture out of the blender container as you can. Smooth the top. Cover and refrigerate for several hours before using. You can also freeze it, or freeze it until the mixture is firm and then refrigerate.

CLEANING YOUR BLENDER CONTAINER AFTER MAKING YOUR "BUTTER-Y SPREAD": My friend Brenda Wiley said that she had a heck of a time cleaning the greasy blender container after making this. She was using Dr. Bronner's Liquid Castile Soap, which I also use as an all-purpose cleaning product, but not for dishes. She said she had to wash the container about 3 times.
I have not had this problem, and, no, I do not use Dawn! I use Nature Clean Dishwashing Liquid (I like the Lavender & Tea Tree Oil one -- there's an ingredient list at the link) and very hot tap water and have never had a problem. (Nature Clean is a sulphate-free Canadian product and you can buy it online or in most supermarkets and drug stores in Canada.) Before I add the soapy water to the greasy container, I rinse out as much of the greasy residue as possible with hot tap water, using a bottle brush in the corners. I dump that out and add more hot water and a generous squirt of the dishwashing liquid. I scrub the inside with the bottle brush and rinse with more hot tap water.
I looked online for some US products that looked similar. This looked like a good one, and the price seemed reasonable: Natural HomeLogic Eco Friendly Liquid Dish Soap, Powerful & Pure Non-Toxic Cleaning | Plant & Mineral Derived. 17 processed foods to avoid
Eating a diet heavy on processed foods is the quickest way to surrender good health and get sick, fat, or both.
It only takes a few years for populations who adopt a Western diet based on processed foods to start coming down with Western illnesses.
What is a processed food? If a food has been processed with chemicals, contains ingredients that have been refined, or has artificial flavors, colors or other synthetic components, it’s a processed food.
Part 1 ranks the worst processed foods you can eat, and part 2 shows why processed foods don’t keep our bodies healthy.
List of processed foods to avoid
We’ll take a look here at some processed foods that may be perceived as healthy, along with the reasons why they won’t help you achieve your goals.
1. Low-Fat Yogurt
Eating the right kind of yogurt can be a healthy choice, but low-fat yogurt isn’t the way to go.
Because much of the good flavor in dairy products comes from the fat, this discrepancy is usually corrected by plenty of added sugar.
Sometimes yogurt has been pasteurized after culturing, which wipes out the friendly bacteria. Look for full-fat yogurt with live cultures for probiotic benefits.
2. Processed Meat
Meats can be part of a healthy diet, but processed meats like sausage, pepperoni and bacon are poor choices.
Eating processed meats raises the risk of developing chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, colon cancer and heart disease. (1, 2)
While this information is based on observational studies, the association is strong; if you must have processed meats, try to find local sources with minimal additives.
3. Cookies, Pastries and Cakes
These foods are loaded with calories and have essentially no nutrients to deliver. While they’re certainly tasty, you’re not doing yourself any favors by including them in your diet.
The refined sugar, white flour and trans fats commonly found in these treats not only add empty calories, but introduce problematic foods that can contribute to other health problems.
4. White Bread
Made with refined wheat flour, white bread can also be categorized as empty calories, and will spike blood sugar just as effectively as a dose of table sugar. (3)
All the nutrients contained in whole wheat have already been sacrificed to grinding and processing, and even if you can tolerate gluten (the protein contained in wheat) there’s nothing to nourish your body in white bread.
Ezekiel bread or whole grain breads have more to offer.
5. Sugary Drinks
Most modern diets are rich in added sugar, which we all know is detrimental to health on many levels. But some sources of sugar are worse than others, and sweetened drinks are the worst.
The brain “gets it” when we eat sugar-rich foods because of the bulk, but sugary drinks have the opposite effect: the system doesn’t register the calories, and we end up consuming more. (4, 5, 6)
Excess sugar consumption causes insulin resistance and can lead to fatty liver disease, as well as increasing the risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and other serious disorders including obesity. (7, 8, 9)
6. Ice Cream
Because it’s usually loaded with sugar, ice cream is also a poor nutritional choice. Eating it for dessert is even worse, because you’re piling it on top of a meal, adding even more calories.
And everyone who loves ice cream knows how difficult it can be to eat the amount designated as a serving, which is usually a skimpy half-cup.
If you can’t live without ice cream, consider getting a small hand-crank freezer and making your own with less sugar, or using a healthy alternative sweetener.
7. French Fries and Potato Chips
This is probably no surprise: eating potato chips and French fries is associated with weight gain. (10, 11)
Always boil potatoes; baking, roasting or frying causes acrylamides to form. These are carcinogenic substances, and should be avoided. (12, 13)
Be creative and find other foods to satisfy your desire for something crunchy or crispy. Try nuts or baby carrots.
8. Fruit Juices
Fruit juice is commonly mistaken for a healthy food because it comes from fruit, which everyone knows is healthy.
The problem with juice is that it’s been separated from the natural fiber that slows down the assimilation of fructose (the sugar found in fruit).
Drinking fruit juice slams your system with as much or more sugar as sweetened soft drinks. (14)
While fruit juices contain antioxidants and vitamins, benefits can be cancelled out by the sugar content. Pomegranate or acai berry juices, for example, should be taken as a supplement, not consumed to quench thirst.
Drink water.
9. Processed Cheese
Including cheese in your diet can be a smart choice, since it’s rich in vital nutrients, and a single serving delivers all the goodies you’d get in a full glass of milk.
Processed cheese is a different story. Filler ingredients are combined with small amounts of dairy derivatives and carefully engineered to taste, feel and look like genuine cheese.
Invest in the real thing.
10. Agave Nectar
This sweetener is presented as natural and healthy, but it’s actually a highly refined product with more fructose than either table sugar or high fructose corn syrup. (15)
Added fructose in the diet can be destructive to your health, although the fructose in fruit is not a problem. Burdening the liver with the work of processing large amounts of fructose can raise the risk of developing various chronic disorders, like diabetes. (16)
Explore healthier options like erythritol and stevia.
11. Pizza
This may be the most popular “junk food” choice in the world, probably because it tastes divine and is convenient and easy to eat.
But most commercial pizzas are made with refined flour and processed meats, neither of which are healthy choices. And the calorie count for a single slice of pizza is staggering.
Making your own pizza at home with quality ingredients is a good choice for an occasional treat, but eating fast-food pizza regularly is a bad idea.
12. Fast Food Meals
Most people realize making fast food a habit won’t help cultivate a healthy body, but it’s extremely popular partly because it’s tasty and cheap.

13. Industrially Produced Vegetable Oils
It’s only been the last hundred years or so that added oils in the diet have increased dramatically, pushing us into territory where humans have never gone in the past.
Refined vegetable oils like canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil and cottonseed oil are high in omega-6 fatty acids, which have been linked with an increased risk of cancer, as well as creating higher levels of oxidative stress in the body. (18, 19, 20, 21)
You’re better off using avocado oil, coconut oil, butter and olive oil.
14. Candy Bars
What’s the harm in a candy bar? It tastes good, goes down quickly, and provides a nice shot of energy.
The sugar is the worst of it, but candy bars are often bulked up with refined wheat flour and other ingredients that are likely to make you want more, and end up eating a larger amount than you intended.
When the body metabolizes this type of high-sugar food, you’ll be hungry again in a flash.
Try some dark chocolate, or eat a piece of fruit.
15. Margarine
Like processed cheese, margarine is an engineered food designed to look, taste and feel like butter.
Usually made from highly refined vegetable oils, margarine’s solidity is often achieved through hydrogenation, which ups the trans fat content. Trans fats are toxic, and have no place in a healthy diet, even in small amounts.
Manufacturers can label products as “trans fat-free” if a serving contains less than 0.5 grams of trans fats; with serving sizes designated as a teaspoon or some other unrealistic amount, this can add up fast.
Buy real butter.
16. Sweetened Coffee Drinks
People who drink coffee run a lower risk of certain chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. (22, 23)
Coffee is loaded with antioxidants and can make healthful contributions to your diet, unless you add sugar or other sweeteners and creamers with artificial ingredients.
Try getting quality coffee and drinking it black. If you must lighten it, minimal amounts of cream or full-fat milk are the best choice.
17. Low-Carb Junk Foods
With the growing popularity of low-carb diets, manufacturers have flooded the market with low-carb treat foods like candy bars and replacement meals.
These junk foods won’t make an impact on the amount of carbs you’re eating, but they contain little nutrition and plenty of artificial ingredients or chemicals.
Why processed foods are bad
Here’s why processed foods don’t keep our bodies healthy and happy.
1. Artificial Ingredients
Artificial ingredients are most often chemicals, plain and simple.
If you buy a granola bar, you might think oats and puffed rice, nuts, raisins, honey, and whatever else would be pretty healthy.
The problem lies in whatever else the manufacturer chose to include, like maybe guar gum, anhydrous milkfat, hydrolyzed gelatin, maltodextrin, or artificial flavor.

2. Plenty of Refined Carbs
Most processed foods are high in refined carbohydrates. While nutritional experts argue about whether or not copious quantities of carbs belong in a healthy diet, everybody seems to agree carbs are best taken from whole food sources.
Simple carbs like those in refined foods are broken down quickly in the digestive system, spiking blood sugar and insulin levels. Cravings hit a couple hours up the road, when the blood sugar roller coaster hits the low spot.
Consuming lots of refined carbs is associated with poor health, as well as a greater risk for developing chronic diseases. (2, 3, 4)
3. Low in Nutrients and Fiber

4. High Amounts of Sugar and High Fructose Corn Syrup
Processed foods are often highly sweetened, and manufacturers hit consumers’ sweet spots with white sugar or high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). These two affect the body in the same way: badly.
Everyone knows sugar provides empty calories, but it’s worse than that. Sugar devastates delicate metabolic processes (8) and lines you up for disorders like insulin sensitivity, high cholesterol,and elevated triglycerides. It also helps you tuck away plenty of abdominal fat. (9, 10)

5. Trans Fats and Vegetable Oils
Cheap fats allow food companies to make more money. Seed and vegetable oils commonly used to enhance flavor and texture like soybean oil have been hydrogenated, which makes them trans fats.

Today, those same instincts are exploited by food manufacturers. The more we love eating it, the more likely we are to buy it again.
Costly evaluations and engineering operations are conducted by food giants in the fierce competition for business. The result is overly-rewarding culinary experiences that encourage us to overeat. (22, 23)
Biochemists who are very good at their jobs are being paid very well to create food products laced with substances that trip our pleasure-meters to the point where reason, logic and common sense can no longer be accessed, and the eating just goes on and on.
7. Junk Food Addiction
Arising from hyper-rewards experienced when eating foods designed to hijack brain chemistry, addiction to junk foods is becoming more common. (24)
It doesn’t happen to everyone, but some people just cannot stop, and eat the whole bag of chips or box of cookies. A half-gallon of ice cream is gone in a sitting.
Total loss of control with food is addictive behavior, and studies show sugar and some junk foods light up the same pleasure centers in the brain as cocaine. (25)
This prospect alone should be enough to scare some sense into most people.
