Mabon Celebration Ideas!

As some of you know, this Saturday is Mabon, the celebration of the Autumn Equinox. Some also refer to it as the "Pagan Thanksgiving", as you celebrate the bountiful harvest and are thankful for the earth and its many gifts.
Mabon marks the time of equilibrium, where the days and nights are of equal length. During this time, it is good to set intentions that involve decrease, such as ending unhealthy habits, self-destructive behaviors, or bad relationships.
Decorating for Autumn
This a great time to decorate for the coming autumn and spooky seasons leading up to Samhain! I like to open the windows and then cleanse my space(usually a simmer pot and smoke cleanse) and after, i actually physically clean the house.I then close the windows and stir my simmer pot, while setting new intentions for the household until the spring equinox. I then collect the things I want to decorate with(the usual fall decor; pumpkins, pine cones, leaf garlands, gourds and an autumn wreath on the door) and then decorate to my hearts content!
Release and Move Forward
Another thing I usually spend time on is meditation, centering myself, letting go of past baggage from the year and setting new personal goals and intentions until spring.
Find a nice spot outside, where you feel connected to the world around you. Take a journal with you, and meditate. Write down what you want the next few months to bring into your life. Set those intentions in any way you choose.
Have a nice Hearty Meal
Who doesn't love a good meal with great people? You can make a roast, hold a potluck Mabon dinner ect, I usually host a bonfire night and everyone brings their own dishes to feel the group. During covid, I made a pot roast for my fiance and I! You could also do a picnic!
Fall Activities
Apple Picking, Corn Mazes, going to a Pumpkin Patch, all fall activities that are fun for the whole family, as a cute date, or great solo fun!
Honor Persephone and Demeter
If you are one to honor deities/spirits during the holidays, Persephone and Demeter are two that will definitely fall into Mabon.
According to the myth, Autumn is the time where Persephone must leave her beloved mother and travel to Hades, to fulfill her role as the Queen of the Underworld. Each year she lets go of the concerns of the upper world, and willingly descends to guide the souls of the dead over the threshold of Life and Death.
Creating an altar, and leaving offerings for them in honor of their sacrifice is an amazing way to celebrate.
Other
Other things you can do include cleansing ritual baths, Divination for the new few months, hiking, offerings for the local nature spirits, make a gratitude list for the last few months and thank the earth for her gifts
Mabon Symbols:
Cornucopia (horn of plenty), pinecones, seeds
Colors: Orange, red, yellow, brown, copper, dark yellow, dark green
Foods: Corn, beans, squash, apples, pumpkins, cider, root vegetables, pomegranate, wine
Herbs: Yarrow, rosemary, sage, mugwort, rosehips,
Stones: Amber, citrine, cat’s eye, aventurine, sapphire, jasper
Flowers: Sunflowers, thistle, marigolds
Deities: Mabon, Green Man, Demeter, Persephone, Morgan, Pomona, Inanna
Animals: Owl, stag, blackbird, salmon
I hope this gives you a few ideas! Add your own ideas to this list! These are just the ways I like to celebrate!

Making a secret compartment altar shelf!
I just wanted to share a project I've been working on for the last month or so, a secret altar shelf! My house gets a lot of traffic from family, most of whom aren't aware of my practice and are all hella nosy, so I've been trying to figure out a way to have a formal work area and accessible storage space that's convenient for me and will also not be found by any prying visitors. Using something that nobody assumed would open seemed like the best way of keeping them from snooping-- ultimately I decided the perfect plan was to install a secret compartment in a seemingly solid wall shelf.
I started with a Magnolia brand floating shelf I found at Goodwill, very similar to these.

The top and bottom are separate pieces put together, and I could tell by the weight and sound that it was hollow inside-- my hope was that I could separate the top from the bottom and use the interior space as a storage area. The pieces were attached with staples and glue; the glue I dissolved with acetone (using nail polish remover) and then I pried it open as I went; once the top and bottom were separated I pulled out or snipped off the interior staples.
Then there was a lot of sanding and painting to clean it up and get it matching my walls! I also glued in wooden squares to act as a locking mechanism to keep the lid in place. It worked out pretty well, and keeps the parts together tightly.

(finished shelf in 2 pieces: a. showing lid top b. showing lid bottom)

Here it is on my wall! There's a slightly visible space between the lid and the base that I'm working out how to fix, however if I hung it lower I don't think it would be noticeable at all unless someone was really snooping around.
The interior is big enough to hold a lot of my tools and supplies, and all I have to do is throw a potted plant or something up there and the whole shelf becomes basically invisible.
And here's a some footage of how it actually works
Hopefully this'll be helpful for any other witches in my situation!

When I first began practicing witchcraft in 1996 I had very little in the way of supplies. I used candles and cloth for most things.
Then I performed my first binding, which was the first spell of mine that did not work.
I moved into petition magick. Simple. They never worked at first. I had trouble with the idea of the spell not being fancy enough. I was young.
In 2018 I began petition work again. I didn't have much. Things I wanted to manifest were coming to me rather quickly. I was well over needing anything to be fancy.
My altar had a few things from local shops, but most of what I set it up with came from a dollar store.
I began to work with candles more.
Today I work with a few more crystals, I have gotten new cards, my oracle decks were all stolen a number of year's ago, and I have a little more spending money.
But for the first 15 years plus of my practice, I literally used what I had around me.
Witchcraft isn't about the tools, the oils, the crystals, or other goodies.
While they can be nice to have. They don't make the witch.
