#winx season 8 German

OK I know we all hate AI but this one Winx Channel managed to dub the first episode of season 8 into German with Ai. Like they generated the voices of the VA's and you almost don't notice! Best thing is, they went with Flora's first VA. I'm so curious if they continue and if so which VA's they'll use for Stormy and Icy (they have 2 for Stormy and 3 for Icy in the German dub). I hate s8 but I'm still totally hyped about this.

If I can say, a little Rainbow style, if there is one... a Rainbow Style. This "contamination" that me and other guys around my age, some a little younger, some a little older, have lived. We grew up when we were tiny tiny with american cartoons, Disney, Warner Bros, (Hanna) Barbera, all those. But around the age of 10, back then we'd watch cartoons till age 13, 14... even when Winx came out we thought of a 12 years old target, with a complex multilayered story, many ways of reading, more teenager acts, the girls fighting, even if they're friends, etc. This kind of realism that we wanted (to implement), a little innovative, because we weren't talking to 4, 5 years old kids, but we did it 8-12 on purpose. But I mean, it can be 7-15 too... I was saying, back then at my age (of 10) that were even more mature: when I was around 10 these japanese cartoons appeared! (translator's note: he's talking about the anime boom in Italy exactly in 1978, when Straffi was 10). Rai began broadcasting these almost like a joke and then they got a hold of italian television as a whole, on Rai and private TV channels. So magically, my generation and the one right after had a bit of this influence, manga, anime, on both storytelling, which was completely different! We were used to small episodes of a certain length but always self contained with simple characters, then we got these japanese stories where there's narrative arcs, character starts here and goes there and if you missed some episodes you have to look up some summaries, how did this story get solved. Something completely revolutionary that kept us watching TV daily, everyday we were waiting to see how the story was gonna continue. But when I started writing Winx, I thought "For now, I don't care for what the italian, french, german, etc. markets want. They'd like self contained stories as usual. Let's do something more complex, that reveals itself season after season." And then, visually, like I said earlier, we didn't want to do something more western, more Disney-like, because we felt this need to "contaminate" our style with the japanese one. Something that we really liked. I remember for Winx I did a particular study on the shapes and luminosity of the eyes inspired from japanese products and we made these characters with these ... particular eyes. So that's how it is, in short. We lived in a different generation when it wasn't just Disney, the japanese came and we took it right when we were growing up, visually and spiritually.

the killing of gianni versace. you have impressive theaters and mansions on the one hand and on the other you have tiny houses filled with dirt and garbage. and it fits the storyline so perfectly, it's amazing

Winx Club Rewatch Log Part 6 (s. 2, epi. 1-8)

Side note, I’ll refer to Aisha as Layla, because that’s the name I grew up with. Also, I was informed that I’m wrong actually, and Nabu does stay dead. It seems the second movie is just set before season 4, for whatever reason. I’m not sure how I feel about that. It’s ballsy for sure, and I prefer it to the retconning I thought it was, but specifically giving them the power to stop death and then not letting them use it just seems meanspirited. I don’t know, maybe I’m just a wuss, but I think I’d have liked it better if they’d just made season 5 about saving him. Oh well. Then again I’m salty about them bringing back Daphne, so I guess I just can’t decide how I want it. Actually no, I could live with the Daphne thing, if her design wasn’t so atrocious. But that’s generally a late series issue. I still don’t like it. Especially because they did keep her ghost design! Why did they just abandon that! Okay, now I gotta stop and calm down again.

Very fancy opening shot. No, the character animation does not mash with the 3d background, but it's still impressive.

I like that who the elves bond with isn't completely obvious. The only one you immediately know is Digit, but the rest really isn’t that on the nose.

Layla is great. I love her.

I hate that the phoenix has a face under his helmet but even less of a waist than the girls. I don't know what he is, he creeps me out and he isn't really compelling. The only good thing about him is the voice actor, but to be fair the voice acting in the German version at least is really solid. The bird transformation is kind of cool as well.

That first lesson with Wizgiz about the whole no light without shadow is the only thing from season two that really stuck with me my whole life. It's a really cool way to demonstrate that principle.

I like the codex as an idea, but it's just not set up. Worse still is the phoenix. I don't like him. Yes, let's recruit three teenage witches. Yes, let's go with the weird skeleton man. Yes, let's give the teenage witches new outfits exactly like their old ones and also magical jewelry.

I love what they did with the Red Fountain school. This show has many issues, but creativity isn't one of them.

You're not imagining it, the Winx are kind of getting more... the same color.  Not always; it varies from image to image but some of the time Flora and Musa are the same color as the officially Caucasian Bloom, Tec and Stella.  Aisha's skin color always varied a bit but it's now leaning paler more often-- at least, often enough that the fandom has noticed.

I kind of suspect it's not on purpose; just a side effect of the washed out “Winx couture” style and then the artists just sort of kept sliding?  Maybe?  I want to think the best of the people who make the show I like, so that's the explanation I'm going with.  Also they're in Italy, maybe they don't know that the entire American internet is noticing social justice stuff right now.

But even thinking charitably, it's whitewashing and it's not cool. So what to do?  It seems like I ought to wave my social justice flag somewhat anyway, but I didn't want to boycott my beloved show like some folks in the fandom.  So!  Google translate.  Rainbow's physical address.  Two stamps.

I wrote a short paragraph basically, “Dear Mr. Straffi, I noticed this, I'm sure it's just the art style but this is a big deal in America right now so please be careful about your skin tones.  Love the show!” Then I ran it through google translate so the letter was the same thing in English and Italian and sent it off.  I know Iginio Straffi is 0% likely to read emails from random Americans, but someone at Rainbow probably does.

I present this as one option for anyone who might also be dismayed about our favorite fairies changing color.  Cute but pale season 8 picture from German Sirenix.

Okay, so I watched Winx season 4...

....and I am not okay with it!

These are my full notes & thoughts.... aka one big rant👀

Okay so a quick reminder that I watched the German dub of season 4 so if I mention voice actors it's always the German ones. Oh, and I don't consider anything post movie #1 canon. Okay that's it, thank you. Now let's start the rant.

Episode 1:

the opening cringed right in 🙄

all of a sudden Faragonda comes to mind, that there is another stage of transformation - all of a sudden

the Trix picture in the Hall of Enchantments saved my day

Of course, Bloom has to touch everything again (the curtain in front of the wizards' picture was there on purpose, bloom!)

yeh this season is so cringe, okay? i watched 26 episodes and i feel like nothing really happened? the plot was so lame and slow. i mean, look what happens in s1-s3 in all the episodes. there was so much more going on. it was just relationship drama and unncecessary i gotta say. if they have to write rivusa so toxic then why don't they simply break them up and give them a harmonic ending? maybe being friends is better for them? also no fan of musa becoming a girly bitch with long hair. give me back my tomboy. i have to say too: a season without the trix is no real season even though the wizards are cool. also faragona is so useless let's don't talk about that. and the winx were teachers for ONE episode and after that they are like: meh no we live now our ugly love and pet life in gardenia. the pets, the PETS. i HATE them. they are so ugly. I mean the pixies had a plot they had to fulfill. they had a SENSE in the winx universe. the pets are just ...ugh. not cute. Then Roxy: my opinion on her: she's a bit over dramatic but fine i guess? still wonder why her wings are so big if she is no believix fairy. nebula, diana and aurora were really cool but come on, we did not really need this season. then the criticism that everyone has: wtf with the second movie. where does it take place? why is nabu alive? why do they have their beliviex? it's just that this season was rushed and the plot was meh. and i know it gets worse so let's face it. winx ended after the first movie and this is an ass ugly boring and lame written ff au.
