ARC REVIEW: HEART OF THE SUMMER QUEEN BY HOLLY ROSE
⭐⭐⭐⭐
TROPES
Beauty and the Beast meets Snow White
Enemies to Lovers
Touch Her and Die
Slow Burn
This picks up right where the first book, Bride of the Winter King, leaves off. Adara has just tried to kill her husband, and it didn’t really go how she thought it would. Now the two of them are working together to break the curse that plagues the Winter King also known as Elaric.
While most of the first book takes place in Elaric’s castle of ice, this next book sees the two go on an adventure across the kingdom, from the forests to the seas. It was perfect because I do think the story had outgrown the castle, so it was nice to see how Adara and Elaric interacted outside of their otherwise rigid environment.
There are some great sequences that showcase Adara’s ability to think on her feet and adapt to any situation, and it was fun to watch her continue to grow. She really gives their adventure her all, even if it could end up poorly in the end.
Once the door opens on Adara and Elaric’s relationship, nothing can stop them (even though it takes a hot second for them to be on the same page). Though it started on rocky ground, by the end, they are in a great place and I’m so glad they made it there.
Heart of the Summer Queen is available now on KU! Thank you to the author for a chance to ARC read.

i saw two steps from hell live today and it was really really good! i used to write to their music and listen to them in the train and i enjoyed it a lot and they genuinely put on an amazing show with their amazing music.
but seeing this one song live... it made me laugh, like its a great song, but its just That One Trailer Song and it was so cool but also really funny
#i talk#my fave by them is winterspell which they didnt play but they did el dorado and protectors of the earth which i also really like#i love this kinda orchestral film score stuff#they had this electric cello and violin and it sounded so good#and they had light-up bows which looked like lightsabers#the choir and the singers were so good too#they said it was the first time they played in front of such a big audience so its cool to be part of that!#its pretty classic EpicTM music i think lol but imo its soo good for writing and making art bc it just makes you feel like youre in a movie#realizing again that my phone mic quality is really pretty good? so glad about that tbh i love recording concerts

It's silly music poll time! I was listening to my Spotify Wrapped and thinking about which of the top songs were my most-beloved vs most-listened-to-in-the-background, and thought: which are your favorites? So:
These are in no particular order, btw!

Artfight revenge for Winterspell on artfight.
Heck yeah spooky lady (Also I'm beefstatic on artfight uwu)
[ID: a sketch of a human woman with white skin, shoulder-length brown hair, and a slim build. Her hands are black claws with black veins trailing up her arms, and the same effect is around her eyes, on her face, and on her torso. Her eyes are completely black, and she has a black, whip-like tail, and trailing black tendrils sprout out from her back. She is wearing a torn red shirt and gray pants. She is walking toward the viewer in a strange pose, with one hand out stretched and the other held in front of her, her head to the side and looking toward the viewer.]

I'm going to see the Nutcracker tonight!
The university and the local ballet company partner up every year to put it on for just a few nights, and for ONCE, I remembered in time to actually get tickets! I scored 2nd row on the final night!
Usually, everything is long sold-out by the time posters get put up at work. But I was planning Christmas lessons for the the library a couple weeks ago. Every year, I share my copy of "The Story of the Nutcracker Ballet" by Deborah Hautzig with my 2nd graders, and we watch some clips from various ballets. The Australian National Ballet - I believe, it's been a year - has a really neat behind-the-scenes piece about Mother Ginger for the kids.
I love this book so much! It was one of my favorites growing up because I just loved Diane Goode's illustrations! I mean, I read "Winterspell" by Claire LeGrand a couple years ago, and this is how I pictured Drosselmeier. No question.
