57. Who's the serious one when grocery shopping and who likes to toss random items into the cart?

ooo in "you be the tightrope, i'll be the safety net" (a/b/o dynamics), anakin is such an unserious grocery shopper that when they were at college, obi-wan restricted them both to one basket (which anakin was instructed to carry) and when that didn't stop anakin's inclination to add random things and sweet treats and cans of chickpeas to their grocery list, obi-wan threatened him separate baskets which only worked because anakin developed a keen hatred for having anything of his separated from anything of obi-wan's if unnecessary. now when they go grocery shopping, obi-wan makes anakin steer the cart and holds onto one of his hands so that he's completely occupied and focused on the mission (the grocery list)

this is all very ironic because anakin is actually the more thrifty of the two of them while obi-wan is prone to court indulgences despite the ticket price. it's just whenever his husband is concerned, anakin tends to lose his head a little bit.

the only exception to this dynamic is well documented (by anakin) and found extremely shameful (by obi-wan): obi-wan tends to add entirely random things to the cart in the week or so preceding his heat

"I know what you're doing," Obi-Wan mutters as he watches Anakin pull a grocery cart out from the bay and turn it towards the store. "And it's stupid. And frankly offensive."

"I'm taking my mate grocery shopping," Anakin replies easily, lifting one of his hands from the cart's bar and wrapping his arm around his omega's waist. "I don't know what's offensive about that, unless you have something against--" he glances down at their written list, "honeycrisp apples and penne pasta?"

Obi-Wan scowls but allows himself to be pulled closer under Anakin's arm. Either he thinks Anakin is liable to throw a fit in the store should he step away, or his own bitchy attitude is more theatric than he's pretending. Probably, knowing him, it's a mix of both.

"You think my heat's approaching," he hisses as they stroll past the herbs and fresh vegetables.

Anakin hums, making a very big point of examining the selection of apples in front of him. "I do," he tells Obi-Wan, also in an undertone because he's not an idiot. "I don't know what that has to do with the grocery store though, baby."

Obi-Wan's cheeks flush a dull red. Anakin's familiar enough with all of his blushes to know this one is from anger, not sweetness.

"You're trying to prove your silly little point," Obi-Wan snaps, lips pulling back from his teeth, and Anakin loves him so much he wants to kiss him by the produce, even when he's all spitting mad and indignant, feathers ruffled and pride wounded. "That I tend to...hoard. Before my heat."

Anakin just stops himself from rolling his eyes. His omega is so stubborn and beautiful and blind to his own instincts half the time. Anakin's been in love with him since he was a kid, since before they even presented. He knows better than anyone else--even Obi-Wan, apparently--how he gets in the week before his heat hits. Ever since they were in high school, Anakin's known to present the omega with a sweet treat or two--or five--as soon as he smells his scent begin to change.

He's given him loose-leaf tea, fresh baked bread, thermoses full of soup in the winter months. Obi-Wan has always accepted all of it, had been known to snoop through Anakin's cupboards in college if he were staying over and hadn't been presented with enough food.

Anakin doesn't think he eats most of it. He just likes to have it around. Near. And so Anakin likes to provide it for him, because he'd give Obi-Wan anything he wanted or needed in the entire world. He'd give him anything he so much as looked at twice.

Which is why grocery shopping the week before Obi-Wan's heat hits has become one of Anakin's favorite activities. For this one brief period of time, Obi-Wan is disinclined to reject Anakin doting on him.

Even if he won't admit it.

"Which is not true," Obi-Wan is saying mulishly as Anakin lets go of the cart's handle to select three of the apples.

"Hm," he says with a very small smile.

"What."

Anakin tucks the apples into the cart and then glances at Obi-Wan, leaning over to kiss him on the temple. Again, Obi-Wan lets him.

Anakin loves the week before his mate goes into heat almost as much as he loves the few days of his actual heat.

"It's just, you know. You've put in the cart half a cherry pie, a carton of blueberries, caramel dip, and two packets of pistachios since we arrived, baby." He pauses, blinks, and then makes a show of checking the shopping list even though he knows he risks exile to the living room couch for the night. "And none of that is on our list."

Obi-Wan scowls, and his cheeks redden further. He doesn't make a move to put any of it back though, which is good as Anakin would hate to have to sneak back here a few hours from now just to purchase all of his omega's food cravings in secret.

Holidays and Happy Endings 2024

Our femslashy followers,

Yes, it is that time of year once again! Since 2013 (with a few COVID-related breaks in between), we have hosted our annual Holidays and Happy Endings event here on the blog.

What is it?

This is a low-pressure end-of-the-year event in which we post exclusively holiday and winter-related content (see a few of our past years). We don't have any of our own prompt lists or exchanges (though we'd love if you'd submit any going on), we just call for related submissions. As long as they are festive and follow our submission guidelines, we want to see it!

What does the theme entail?

Whatever gets you in the festive spirit! All winter holidays from all backgrounds, faiths, and cultures are accepted. Think snowball fights, hot cocoa on the sofa, kissing under the mistletoe, toasting to the new year, celebrating new traditions, ice skating dates, etc. All of the things that make us warm and cozy.

Also, this is the time for happy endings in general, so if your OTP/ship/OCs are just super in love and deliriously happy, we want to see them, too! The main goal is good vibes (we love angst and whump--let's just wait for January!)

When is it?

This year, our themed posting will be from Tuesday, December 24 through Tuesday, December 31. Submissions will be accepted from now until the end of the event. Please let us know in your submission that it is for Holidays and Happy Endings 2024.

So, Nico Minoru's in Spider-Man Freshman Year... Let's talk about it.

About a year ago, Marvel spilled some details about the upcoming animated Spider-Man series, Spider-Man Freshman Year. There was a lot of discussion about it, what it was, what it wasn't, and whether what it is is better or worse then what people wanted it to be.

A couple weeks ago, a trademark filing indicated that the show was scheduled for Winter 2024. In an era where companies are killing announced and nearly-finished projects, I was honestly thinking the show was on thin ice... but since it seems to still exist, I want to talk about something that I feel has gotten surprisingly little discussion in all the discourse about the show: the inclusion of Nico Minoru, of the Runaways, as Peter Parker's best friend.

Now, from a Peter-centered perspective, I think this choice makes sense in a very specific way? If you flash back to the original 60s Spider-Man comics, which the show seems to be trying to invoke aesthetically from the little we've seen, Peter Parker had a female close friend who was representative of 1960s youth counter-culture: Mary Jane.

The degree to which Stan Lee's own values undercut MJ's counter-culturism is something that people could/do entire academic essays about, but suffice it to say that she was meant to appeal to the zeitgeist of the era and the character's spirit certainly got through to viewers. Like, there is a reason that she the OTP for Peter for so many people, even if Lee at the time had intended to keep the focus on Peter's more traditionally conservative romance with Gwen Stacy.

Nico Minoru slots into this classic pre-MJ-as-the-love-interest MJ role very well, in my opinion at least? In her 2000s comics, she was cast as a edgy goth social outcast who made her own clothes and did her own thing... In her 2010s MCU show, she was cast again as an outcast, but with a certain amount of doomerpilled depression that she outgrows as the show goes on... In the 2020s game Midnight Suns, Nico is still a devoted goth, but also draws from queer youth culture and has a certain semi-ironic peppiness to her (she calls the player "friendo" constantly - she's just like me fr).

So, honestly, I think picking Nico Minoru for Spider-Man's best friend is a really clever move that slots her into this historical role of the foil to Peter Parker - fun choice!

However, from a Nico-centered perspective, I have a lot of questions about what this version of the character will be like practically... The biggest one being: Why is Nico in New York? One of the core concepts of the Runaways as a team is that they are a response to the oft-asked question "Why is New York always under threat? Why are there no superheroes having to save LA?". While the West Coast Avengers do, y'know, exist, the Runaways introduces another answer to this question: Supervillains cannot operate in LA without permission of the Pride, a LA-based supervillain mafia who made a pact with a demon from Limbo and require a cut of all crime committed in the city. The titular Runaways are the children of these villains, who choose to reject their parent's lifestyle and go on the run rather then be complicit in their villainy.

So... How did Nico get in New York and end up enrolling in a New York high school? That's a big change for her and I hope the explanation is satisfying.

Nico and her team also don't usually appear as traditional costumed heroes with secret identities, at least not for prolonged periods of time. They've used several codenames and several costumes, but it's always bit a touch comedic - Nico goes by "Sister Grimm" because they decide they need nicknames to be superheroes as somewhat-cringy-teens while she later uses "The Gloom" partially at the encouragement of her girlfriend, but she's still largely just... Nico. It's worth noting that both Midnight Suns and Marvel Snap break naming conventions to call her by her first/last name instead of an alias - something Snap mostly does with big-deal characters like Jean Grey and Kitty Pryde, with even other characters more known by their real name like Emma Frost and Danielle Moonstar being called by their hero names instead...

So, I'm curious if Nico will be using her powers to fight crime and, if she is, what codename/costume she has... On top of that, I wonder if Peter Parker will know that Nico is a blood witch and if Nico will know that Peter Parker is Spider-Man - or if they mutually uncover that across the events of the series... Doctor Strange is also set to be in this show - will he be a mentor for her as a budding witch, perhaps even more then he is a mentor for Peter? There's a lot of possibilities there too.

Finally, there's the big question of Nico Minoru's queerness. Now, there's basically two lists of Marvel queers - the characters written as queer by the writers and artists at Marvel and the characters Marvel corporate have actually approved as being queer and stamped with a big rainbow stamp of approval. This is what separates your "did a gay kiss once" characters from your "paraded out every June" characters...

Nico is in the latter category and is potentially one of the most corporate-approved queer characters there are. This girl is BISEXUAL and Marvel is uncharacteristically interested in making sure you know it. She got a Pride variant cover kissing her girlfriend when Pearlmutter was still at the company. Her MCU show is full of gay kisses and has not one but TWO fantasy gay wedding sequences (it also got removed from Disney+ earlier this year, funny that).

Now, uh, America Chavez is basically the face of Sapphic Marvel in the comics and her queerness got reduced to a Pride pin in her movie, so I'm not sure if Nico's bisexuality will be acknowledged in the show given that precedent... but I sure hope it does!!! It'd be cute if Karolina pops in too, helping her girlfriend out with whatever antics she gets into... She wasn't in the initial revealed character line-up, but I could also see them waiting to reveal her and hoping to get hype specifically from shippers who haven't thought about the pairing in a few years since the Runaways TV show ended.

ANYWAY. That was a lot of thoughts, but I'm just very curious what's going to happen here... I love Nico and am eager to see her in this show, but it also just feels like such an unconventional choice... to the point where I am apparently thinking about it this hard a year later.

Oh my lovely. What a mysterfying question you ask!

I can only say I struggle to answer it, as I, being a Sokabine addict, fail to fully understand why other people don't appreciate such a delicious ship.

The only way I can attempt to understand is by likening Sokabine to Nutella ice cream. Just as how lots of people like shipping, lots of people like ice cream. And there are so many flavours of ice cream! Nutella ice cream is that decedent blend of chocolate and nutty hazelnut (I'll let you decide on who is the chocolate and who is the nuts). Being ice cream, it's a perfect summer treat, however it has a heaviness of flavour that makes it soul-warming enough to eat it even in the winter months.

But some people don't want to try Nutella ice cream. Maybe trying Nutella ice cream gets in the way of them enjoying their personal OTP flavours of boysenberry and lemon gelato, or their peppermint and strawberry combo? Those flavours may be the only comfort they get in this chaotic world, and they don't want to risk not having their comfort food to try something new. Valid! Maybe they see Nutella ice cream as guilty treat. Maybe they've been taught to be ashamed of Nutella ice cream for some reason, and so they only eat it when no one else is looking? Valid! Or maybe they've only ever known vanilla ice cream, and are too scared to try something different, or a pressured by comp-vanilla-het society to not dare deviate? Valid! Maybe they've only bought ice cream from a stall that doesn't offer Nutella ice cream, and thus didn't realise such a flavour exists? You guessed it. Also valid!

So yeah, so many reasons that I can't answer for because that's not my experience. I will eat my coffee ice cream, my peanut butter brownie ice cream, my strawberry ice cream, my roasted almond ice cream, my mango ice cream. But my Nutella ice cream will always be my number one go-to.

We don't have a Sokabine blog, or a Sokabine server. I've found a little safe space on a Bo-Katan server which is my happy place where I can get comfy with other Sokabine lovers (all 12 of us). Maybe I could start a blog? I don't think I have the emotional space or time/energy to run a server, even though the numbers would be so few right now. A Sokabine event would be amazing, but without a Sokabine blog or server to back/promote it, it might not get much traction. I've found a lot of my work was merely tolerated during past Ahsoka Series-related events because the ship does seem to get under some people's skin. That's okay, I don't need an event to write my stuff for, and I'm finding my safe people slowly.

An answer I can offer you, however, is reasons to like Sokabine as a ship. Why the Sokabine ship deserves to be upgraded from tugboat to cruiseliner. But I might save that for another post, as it's dissertation-worthy, and I'll add graphics for some weight to my brain rot. The simplest answer for that though I'll let you see for yourself in the utter beauty of these two characters below (and extra kudos for Ahsoka blatantly checking out Sabine's arse here). In the meantime...

Firstly, shipping the batkids together??? I've seen a few fics like that, especially the robins (e.g. dick/jason, jason/tim??) but I generally avoid them bc they make me feel uncomfy personally, even if they're not characterized as brothers/sisters in that particular fic - cuz i cant kid myself into thinking that i'll ever see them as anything but siblings 🥹

then there's also the stephanie/tim thing?? my understanding of stephanie's dynamic in the batfamily is limited since i got into the dc fandom mainly through fic, but i'm under the impression that some canons have that, and stephanie is not totally considered part of the batfamily (as in bruce's daughter). while other times it's tim/kon, and I'm very supportive of the increasing inclusion of queer representation in the "dc canon", but i guess it's just that the batkids all feel like children, like babies even 🥺🥺

People do ship the batkids together, in a variety of related/not related scenarios. It's not everyone's cup of tea. Some people like it. Some people get very squicked by it. All reactions are valid. I am a big proponent of ship and let ship -- people are going to write what they're going to write. If you don't like to read that, hit the back button. Like you said, you have already identified that you don't like it, and now you avoid it. That's awesome!

Tim/Steph vs Tim/Kon can also be a touchy subject in fandom. Steph's inclusion in the batfamily depends on the fanon and/or canon. People have strong opinions about this. My reaction is always, teens have relationships. Messy relationships. Tim and Steph and Tim and Kon can all happen and it doesn't make anyone more or less deserving of love or a relationship. They're kids figuring themselves out -- it makes sense that it's messy.

I like ghostbat! I will admit I'm not as familiar with the ship as I could be. I mostly consume secondhand info here on tumblr. @allgremlinart's blog is a great place to start if you haven't already.

Snow for sure <3 They love making snow men and playing and watching the snowflakes fall. They also just find it cute to see the other bundled up in a big winter coat and a cozy scarf💞

I can see both of them doing that tbh They both have huge empathy for animals so both of them would be on board with helping an injured bird or abandoned cat or something. But I do think Jere would be the one to play responsible adult at some point once the animal is healed again and explain that they have to set it free even tho they've both gotten attached to it

34: who's more likely to tell a dirty joke to make the other blush?

Jere 👀👀 He can be surprisingly raunchy lmao The fact that he communicates mostly through text and looks so innocent is something he uses to his advantage. No one would suspect a thing if Jere casually shows Bojan the dirtiest message you can think of on his phone lol While Jere is often the one to start things, though, Bojan tends to be the one to finish them 😏

30: your OTP gets to pick out each other's outfits, what are they wearing?

Jere: he'd really love to see Bojan in leather so he'd give him a pair of his own pants and a leather shirt so he can swoon over his handsome Bojan 🥰 Bojan: he's putting Jere in more skirts... 1, because it's sexy. 2, because Jere really does look nice in skirts <3

21: who would get into a fight to defend the other's honor?

They're both pretty protective but unfortunately Jere is more likely the one to be harassed or treated rudely by a stranger so it's more common that Bojan would (fiercely) defend his angel. Bojan doesn't get angry easily but if someone is mean or hurtful to Jere he can become absolutely livid. Jere prefers to avoid conflict but he's not above using a right hook to protect his Slovene 💪

13: who's the bigger tease?

I couldn't really choose one in particular. Bojere have a really playful dynamic so the teasing is pretty equally divided haha

10: describe their first date

Something active. Maybe like a bowling date. It'd be just something lighthearted, something they'd do as friends. Except whoever scores a strike first gets a kiss 🤭 Hand feeding each other fries n whatnot 🥰 Then at the end Bojan would try to pay for everything but Jere distracts him and ends up paying ahead. Bojan is devastated until Jere tells him he did the math and Bojč can pay his half of the bill later. Equality 💪💪 Afterwards they walk to Jere's dorm together hand in hand ♡

7: would they build a pillow fort together just because?

100% They'll have sleepovers on the floor surrounded by pillows even though there's a perfectly fine bed waiting for them

Yes 🥰🥰 Jere likes to wear Bojan's hoodies and rings. Bojan also wears Jere's sweaters cuz they're oversized anyways and also his socks cuz Jere has a bunch of socks with fun patterns :3

5. Describe their cozy night in.

Depends on where they are. At the museum, they'll probably sneak off to one of the quieter places, like the planetarium or the ocean exhibit, and just cuddle up together and talk and watch the exhibit around them. Katherine's also figured out how to play movies in the planetarium theatre, so she's rigged that up once or twice.

If they're hanging out at Katherine's apartment, they'll probably share a late-night meal (or at least a snack) and cuddle up on the couch. Katherine's sketching, Ahk's reading something, they've probably got some music or a movie on just for a little ambiance, but they're really just enjoying the feeling of sharing the same space without the chaos and clutter of the museum.

25. Do they have any hobbies they share?

I mean, Katherine's definitely interested in learning more about Ahk's time, and especially learning to speak and translate his language, and he's more than happy to teach her. I think they both just have a lot of curiosity within them, and they enjoy learning together (whether that's one actively teaching the other, watching a documentary together and talking about it, or just parallel play where they're in the same room reading two books on completely different topics)

30. Your OTP gets to pick out each other’s outfits; what is each wearing?

Oooh, good question!

Katherine's canonically done this a few times across WWFA? and the sidepieces I've written for it, but she's picking something academic but comfy. Slacks, either a knit sweater or a vest over a dress shirt, maybe a jacket or blazer if it's chilly out. Something modern, comfortable to wear, but that's still going to maintain a bit of that "regal" look without being overblown (and, let's be real, he's gonna look damn good)

With Ahk, it's a little harder to predict. If he's given total free rein, he'd of course want to see her in clothes from his time, because wouldn't you if you were in his position? But if we're going based on what he could reasonably have available, I think he'd honestly try to recreate something he's seen Katherine wear often herself - he thinks she looks good in just about anything, but he also knows she still has a few deep-rooted insecurities and above all would want to make sure she's comfortable in what she's wearing. It might be the safer bet, but he'd rather see her smiling in an outfit he's seen her wear a hundred times than uncomfortable in something brand new.

Madison and Alex

42. What’s their favorite type of weather to enjoy together? (getting snowed in together, watching thunderstorms, etc.)

Madison doesn't like cold weather most of the time, but she loves hiking with him on those snowy winter afternoons. There's this sweet spot in there, right where it's cold enough that she has an excuse to snuggle up to him but not so cold that either of them are genuinely uncomfortable.

I feel like Alex would be the exact opposite - he's a fan of the hot summer days, particularly those where it's so warm and humid that a dip in the lake sounds like the key to the universe. It's another excuse for them to get close, but this one's a bit more in the line of splash wars and Chicken Fights and sneaky underwater kisses.

44. Who would dance in the kitchen making dinner? Would the other join in or watch from the doorway?

Madison for sure. She enjoys cooking a hell of a lot more than Alex does, for sure, and she's got that restless motion that would absolutely have her dancing. As long as she feels safe and at home, she'd absolutely dance around the kitchen! And I feel like Alex would go either way. Sometimes (especially when the other guys are around) he'd rather just watch, but other times (such as when they're alone in the house and there's nobody to walk in and rib at him for it) he's right there with her.

57. Whose the serious one when grocery shopping and who likes to toss random things in the cart?

Madison's the serious one, absolutely. Her mother was a lot stricter in teaching her efficient shopping and budgeting, for one, and her time in the woods gave her a lot of food insecurity that makes her very hesitant to waste any food she has. She's not putting anything in the cart without an idea for what to do with it, especially if it's a food that spoils easily.

Alex is definitely the "toss random things in" type - not to say he didn't also experience a bit of food insecurity from his time in prison, but he's been living off Charles' practically bottomless bank account the past few years, and his view becomes more "I couldn't have the food I wanted so now I'm going to try whatever the hell I want while I have the chance" in comparison to Madison's "I couldn't have the food I wanted so now I refuse to waste any of the food I do have"

And honestly, they balance each other out. Alex's method alone results in too much junk food and not enough ingredients of substance to make actual meals, while Madison's method alone is too conservative and doesn't leave room for snacks and other casual eating (since she's not used to having snacks and casual eating, she's barely gotten used to having three meals every single day again)
