Lol so two things happened yesterday and today:

1. Yesterday, I caught my 16 year old son and his boyfriend reading Käärijä fanfics on AO3. (My son's a huge Käärijä fan) Worst of all, they found one of my fics and even though my son didn't even know that I was on Ao3 and doesn't know my screen name, he knew right off the bat that it was me. I was so embarrassed. Lol. The boyfriend was laughing his ass off. They also somehow stumbled into the infamous "did Jere write this fic or not?" Fic. That's my son's bf's favorite. My son's favorite is the deaf!Jere fic.

Of course, I told him to stay TF away from AO3 because he's not old enough and he's still my baby!

2. This morning I was texting with my best friend (she's not one of us...yet.) and told her about my monk!Jere fic, (both monk!Jere fics) and this was her response.

PS: I've told her about the Käärijä lore with the boyfriends he collects, the Daltons, Bojan, his OF, the Nurmi Sr agenda, and his on stage shenanigans (she wants to go to a Käärijä gig but mostly for the Käärijä comedy show. She does like CCC, though.)

Can I request TSITP Jeremiah x reader where the reader is friends with the Fishers and Conklins? Her and Belly are closer and always joke about each getting a brother then it isn’t a joke anymore lol

You and the Fishers had been family friends for many years, meeting every time summer rolled around at Cousins Beach. Your mum worked at the country club during the summer and a few years prior had introduced you to the Fishers and the Conklins. You were one month younger than Belly and you guys acted like sisters. In fact, you were one of the first people Belly told when she first started crushing on Conrad. And that same summer she was the first person you told about your feelings for Jeremiah. In retrospect you were both only 10 years old, you would both fantasise and joke about being with them one day not expecting it to happen. Now that you were both almost sixteen everything had changed. There was actually a possibility that It might just happen...

Jeremiah watched as the silver car pulled into the front of the house for the first time that summer. Knowing exactly whose car it was he ran outside. Greeting everyone with his signature smile.

"Look who came back all grown up?" he says ruffling Belly's long hair

"I think Conrad's gonna be real happy this summer he winked

"yeah, whys that?" she says with a smug tone

"oh, nothing he's just been asking every other day when you guys are gonna get here," he teases

"And speaking of..." Jeremiah cuts himself off as he looks up seeing Conrad come around the corner

"I'll leave you to it," he says with a light hand on her shoulder

he goes to Steven, going over their plans for the summer. Just a few minutes later a second car pulls into the driveway. Before anyone can process it Y/N is opening the car door and sprinting towards Belly with open arms.

"Belly!" she yells pulling her into her arms.

"Hi Y/N, god it's been so long" She wraps her arms around her

"You look amazing, you have to tell me everything that's happened this year" she eyes Belly up and down

"Are you kidding me? you look like a Victoria's Secret model, Jer is gonna freak" she says quietly

in mere seconds Jeremiah is practically shoving Belly out of the way to sling his arm over Y/N's shoulder

"Y/N!, I was waiting for you"

"you're gonna be hanging with me all summer," he says quietly pressing his face into her hair

"Yo Steven" he calls out, "

"you know what time it is?" they both exchange knowing looks

"I think it's time for a belly flop!" they shout in unison

Y/N's eyes widen slightly

"Jere no, Jere!" she tries to protest

it falls on deaf ears as he's already picking her up bridal style and making his way to the outdoor pool. In front of them, Steven and Conrad are carrying Belly, Conrad at her arms and Steven at her feet.

At the water's edge, they swing the girls one, two three times before throwing them in.

"Guys that's not funny I hurt my foot" Belly pretends reaching her hand out to Conrad. With a hard tug, she pulls him in.

"Jer help me out please?" she holds onto his hand, and seconds later she yanks him forward into the pool

"I can't belive you fell for that!" she laughed

"Don't think I'm not getting you back" he jokes clinging onto her her body as she swims to the edge to get out

"All of you get a room" Steven makes a disgusted face.

16: What ship stole your heart this year? I legitimately don't think I can choose between bojere and bokris... bojere stole my heart first but bokris just has such good vibes... I like them both equally and I think that's because they both have Bojan who's just so versatile and loveable!

23: What fic did you enjoy writing the most? I enjoy writing all of them; I write fic because I want to and pretty much for no other reason, but I think I have to say "We'll Get Through It Together" both because it was the first bojere fic I ever wrote and the first joker out/käärijä fic i ever wrote, and because it was your deaf!Jere au that pushed me to write it (the brainrot was too strong)

Look, Candace got it--because she was often hard on herself and she also had been really unsure about quitting. Though, not for the same reasons. It had never been that she worried it wouldn't make her happy (she knew that it would), she was worried everyone would think she was a nerd. Or they'd hate her for giving up her talent (and her nepotistic privilege) to pursue science.

At the end of the day, she just had to decide what was best for her. That was all that had mattered.

"It's fine," Candace said. Water under the bridge for the most part. If he'd made her look like an idiot on stage, that would've been one thing. But they pulled it off and Jeremy had been great so, Candace was willing to forgive.

"You should probably figure it out, though, otherwise it's just gonna make you miserable. And, for what it's worth, you are super talented. So it's not like you're some tone-deaf, two-left-foot dummy trying to make it big."

Shady as F*ck [Season 1, Ep. 5]

To recap: In the previous episode, Issa found herself back in Daniel’s face despite successfully avoiding him after an awkward encounter. Lawrence is finding emotional solace in Tasha the bank teller. And I feel like it’s my duty as a citizen of the United States to remind y’all that Molly is dating Jidenna.

This episode was written by Ben Dougan and directed by Melina Matsoukas.

Issa panics about the students knowing about her “Broken Pussy” rap at open mic night. This is the catalyst for her reuniting with Daniel. I think the build-up to get Issa back alone with Daniel was a clunky transition but kids making a meme out of you rapping “Broken Pussy” is embarrassing. So we’ll go with it.

Issa spends the entire day worried about her boss finding out about it. She talks with Lawrence previously, who assures her that the kids won’t remember it. Memes are a dime a dozen. And if you spend any time on any social media platform, you’ll find yourself going along with the extremely fast pace of memeing people. Either way, these bad-ass kids don’t forget it.

Issa takes refuge in Molly to use her fancy attorney skills but this becomes a moment where Molly inserts herself back into Jered’s life to inquire about who could possibly have uploaded the video. Molly’s just using Issa’s plight as an excuse to speak to an ex that clearly she still has feelings for.

I have to say, this was the moment I found myself asking if Molly and Issa were actually as close as the show was trying to convince us but I digress…

Although Molly is calling up Jered, she’s in the middle of a situationship with Chris (aka Jidenna) and trying very hard to make an unofficial thing official. Through a very awkward exchange of talking but not out loud, Molly invites Chris to an engagement party. From what I can assume, they spent the weekend together after having their first date?

We’re only five episodes in but Molly is very desperate for this particular type of relationship that’s honestly headed nowhere. Her obsession with the man being perfect on paper is actually backfiring on her. Also, men are just dumb. And Molly’s giving them way too much.

While Molly is rekindling her friendship with Jered, Issa is now venting about her “Broken Pussy” problem with Daniel. He promises that he’ll take care of it for her...which is an empty promise to be fair because nobody is doing a modicum of the research required to find who could have shared the picture. He asks her to drop her off at the studio and they end up spending the entire day together. Issa refuses to speak up and say no to Daniel because she simply does not want to. That’s the truth of it. She kept walking around and following behind because that is exactly what she wanted to do. No amounts of freestyle rap in the car or the staff bathroom are going to ever fix that.

Lawrence has lunch with Chad who tells him that he’s getting married. It seems out of the blue because it is and because Chad is the type of man that does not hesitate to do things he feels may be the right choice, even if they might be wrong. Anyway, he asks Lawrence about Issa and marriage and Lawrence says that he’s trying to get his shit together. Chad actually offers some decent advice because he feels like Lawrence is shuffling his feet. If he really wants to be with Issa on paper they could just “get their shit together - together.”

Later on, Tasha the bank teller comes to flirt with Lawrence who politely rejects her advances but feels pretty good about himself knowing that a baddie was throwing it at him. Tasha the Bank Teller IS a baddie.

Molly spends her day getting ready for her coworker’s engagement party while Chris aka Jidenna doesn’t seem invested in actually going. Later at the party though, he swoops in to save the day. Molly is swooning by now because he claims the title of “boyfriend” but later admits that he definitely did not mean that when Molly asked him if he was serious.

The conversation basically went:

Molly: Why did you say that if you didn’t mean it? Chris: Because you needed a win.

I would never let a man, let alone a light-skin one disrespect me like this! But whatever, Molly was pushing up on him to make something out of nothing but he didn’t actually speak up and tell her not to rush into things so this isn’t entirely Molly’s fault. Sometimes, people can smell the desperation and continue to stick around despite that. It’s unhealthy and I never understood doing it as an excuse of not wanting to hurt someone’s feelings because eventually, that will happen. That’s just life. The band aid still pulls the skin no matter how fast or slow you do it.

Hurt, Molly tells him to leave and spends the rest of the night getting drunk. Instead of calling Issa, she goes to Jered’s house for some pity sex. Jered ain’t buying it and puts her ass on the couch to sleep. Jered is really too good for the Insecure universe. Shout out to Jered watching an episode of 'Conjugal Visits' with a nice cameo from Leah A. Williams who played Dolores 'Sister Mary' Clarence on The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.

At Daniel’s studio, Issa attempts to head out but Daniel asks her to stay and have a drink. She stays. Hmm. They reminisce a little bit. Daniel then encourages Issa to rap in the booth. It’s met with hesitation but eventually, she does and finds complete solace in it. The best thing about Daniel is that he really does bring out the best in Issa but also the absolute worst. As we eventually see.

They talk about the hows and whys of why a relationship never came to be and this leads to them being booty-butt naked in his studio having sex. Issa had to have seen this coming, no matter WHAT she says in the future episodes. Whatever the case may be… she’s done it now.

Issa goes into the bathroom to clean up and gets post-nut clarity. Yes girl, you are a dirty ass cheater! One of my favorite songs (St. Beauty’s “Borders”) plays as she has the walk of supreme shame. I mean, she cheated. That shit’s shameful.

My final thought is a controversial one, I liked that the episode ended with Issa cheating. Mainly because I love mess but also because so often, we don’t see female characters make terrible ass decisions like this. As someone who is working on a novel where the female protagonist cheats on her spouse, I really spent years fighting with the decision because I was afraid of how readers would receive her.

It can’t be stated enough that genuinely written characters are like real people. They fuck up. They make really bad choices that come to bite them in the ass later. It was a risky choice, I’m sure but I think Issa Rae and the writers room did something really good here. It speaks about Issa as a person and her relationship with Lawrence, which is honestly still going nowhere at this point. And her inability to listen (based on Molly’s advice falling on deaf ears) when she wants to do something even if it’s a bad decision. It builds characters. And yes, even when the character chooses not to listen to good advice.

Plus, she got hers. And I’ll cheer for that.

Not the cheating though.

CODA (dir. Sian Heder)

I'll admit that when I first saw the trailer for CODA, I rolled my eyes at it. Here's a movie that seems to wear its cliches with pride. Its plot about a girl with hearing (Emilia Jones as Ruby) among a deaf family (two parents and a brother) is extremely rote, but the representation it accomplishes is novel. Here we get to see a blue collar fishing family live their lives, and these are by far the best parts of the movie. Troy Kotsur and Marlee Matlin play Ruby's parents, Frank and Jackie, and Daniel Durant plays Leo, her brother. Their characters are the ones that feel most alive, as Ruby herself straddles their world, the hearing world and a series of hoary tropes dressing up as a plot.

See, she is basically a part-time interpreter for them, and has been for essentially her whole life. But a chorus teacher hears something in her voice, and she wants to go to college for music in Boston (they're in Gloucester, about an hour's drive away). Blah blah blah she's assigned a cute boy duet partner blah blah blah. Turning Red had a similar plot. It's the moments in between the beats (no pun intended, keeping it, though) that we get something that feels real: Troy Kutsur is the breakout here, hilarious, profane but loving and fatherly as the scene calls for it.

A scene where Leo goes out with other fishermen (sans Ruby) for drinks, feels alienated, and gets into a fight was my favorite, though. It gave me a glimpse at what would probably be a better story, one where older son Leo sees his family's dependence on Ruby as a dead end, is resentful and is trying to better their lives in his own way. There should be a phrase for what this kind of movie is, one that purports to be "progressive" in some way while centering itself on someone who is close to an observer to the subject, whether that's disability or race or what have you. CODA is in a way, a cousin to The Help or Green Book. These movies' values are progressive (and I sense the intentions are mostly good... maybe not so much for Green Book, actually) but falls apart under deeper scrutiny. I'd call this "middle brow woke", though I suspect the Venn Diagram with "Oscar bait" might just be a circle.

I'm not even going to get into how the soundtrack is heavy on R&B classics but chooses to center Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now"* as the big audition piece.

This is still, though, a very sweet movie that features three deaf actors in major roles, all doing great work in a movie full of pleasant performances. I just wish they'd been centered more in the narrative. If you follow the threads on any of these supporting characters, you would probably find a better story than CODA tells. But, as another cliche goes, it is what it is. For what it is, it's a very sweet bit of pap, completely inoffensive except in its makers' insistence in excellence.

*I love Joni Mitchell so much that I'm giving this an 1/10 than I otherwise would, though she is a problematic fav in her own blackface-defending way
