Maps of the grounds from the programs for the second and eighth year of the Winnipeg Folk Festival.
Originally started in 1974 by Mitch Podolak, Ava Kobrinsky, and Colin Gorrie as a one-off event to celebrate Manitoba’s 100th anniversary, Folk Fest quickly became a beloved annual tradition with over 70 performers and over 70,000 attendees annually

The fight in a Toronto strip club which led on to much, much more (Part 1 of 3)
Back in March, in a follow-up to a piece I posted ten years before (in 2014) I posted a new 4-part blog which started out about a Toronto strip club called Le Strip and then veered into totally true and unexpected tales of Canadian spies, neo-Nazis, double-crosses, counterfeiting, 1980s terrorism, US white supremacists, South African secret agents and much else. All this came from the far-from…

Upside to sharing music taste with my father, because he raised me on Canadian folk music since I was a young child, and as I grew up that continues to be the main music I love: My father becomes a person I get to share music with, and music becomes a way to bond with my father. I have thirty years of cherished memories of seeing music with him - concerts and folk festivals, down the road from our home and ones for which we've traveled halfway across the country, shows we've seen in fields and in concert halls and in churches and in basements and in community centres. And years of sharing music that we play through speakers at home, sending each new stuff when we find it, taking turns playing our favourite songs on road trips.
Downside to sharing music taste with my father: Throughout my life, I have had so many conversations like the one that happened this morning, when I called my mother on the phone.
Me: Do you know if Dad will be in the city on March 18? I know he's been traveling lately [for a job that brings him out to Winnipeg sometimes], and I want to make sure he won't be gone then.
My mother: Why do you ask?
Me: Jimmy Rankin [excellent East Coast Canadian folk singer, whose work my father and I have loved since I was a child] is doing an Atlantic Songwriter's Circle in town that night, I'm about to buy him and I tickets as a Christmas gift.
My mother: No, he'll be in Winnipeg that day.
Me: [very disappointed] Really? Are you sure, definitely March 18? How do you know?
My mother: We were just talking the other day about when he'll be traveling over the next few months, and I know March 18 falls during one of his trips, I remember because it was so close to my birthday so we'll have to celebrate when he gets back.
Me: Oh that's too bad, I'm sorry. Wow, that really sucks.
My mother: It's okay... I can tell you about a book your dad's been wanting, if you want a good gift for him?
Me: No, it's not that I'm desperate for a gift, I have lots of comedy that I can put on a hard drive for him and that he's been asking for. I just thought this one would be really special, we haven't seen an Atlantic Songwriter's Circle together in years, but we both love them, it would have been great to go to this one together. Oh well. I'll buy a ticket just for myself, though... I know it's not your thing as much as it's Dad's, but I bet you'd like this night too. It's too late to call it a Christmas surprise, but do you want to come with me?
My mother: No, don't do that.
Me: Oh that's okay, I don't mind going alone, if you don't want to come. Or I might even be able to talk a friend into coming with me. But I'll just get a ticket for me right now.
My mother: No. Don't buy a ticket for yourself.
Me: What? Why not?
My mother: Because your dad's not going to be in Winnipeg on March 18. He's already bought three tickets to that music night, one for you and one for him and one for me, and he's going to give them to you as a Christmas gift. I didn't want to ruin the surprise.

Amythyst Kiah (December 11, 1986) is an alternative country blues singer, banjoist, guitarist, and composer in Chattanooga.
In 2007 her mother committed suicide. This traumatic experience came on the heels of her becoming a member of a small LGBTQ+ community in socially and politically conservative East Tennessee.
She enrolled in East Tennessee State University, where she majored in the Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Country Music Studies program which was part of Appalachian Studies. She transcribed archival materials regarding Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Country Music. She received the BA but decided to continue her formal education. During her first year as a graduate student at ETSU, she performed at the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival and the Winnipeg Folk Festival. She earned an MA in Liberal Studies from ETSU.
In 2019, she performed at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture DC and the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, Rhode Island. She released Wary+ Strange, her debut album on the Rounder Records label. She managed to collaborate with three other banjo players on the album Songs of Our Native Daughters which was nominated for a 2020 Grammy Award. The album was released on Smithsonian Folkways.
The confrontational single, “Black Myself,” featured on the album was nominated for a Grammy for Best American Roots Song, and it won the Song of the Year at the Folk Alliance International Conference. This song exhibits her raw feelings about the Transatlantic Slave Trade. She and her group, Chest of Glass performed at the annual Blue Plum Festival in Johnson City, Tennessee in 2016. In 2021, she performed virtually on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
She is one of the brightest new additions to the country music scene. She has performed as a guitarist, banjoist, and singer throughout the US, Canada, the UK, and the Czech Republic. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
